Significant loss of international tourism to US and decline in international travel by Americans

Archived article from Bloomberg Businesweek, (6/6/2025) addresses "Trump's $12.5 Billion Tourism Wipeout"
Four months into the president’s second term, his policies are upending tourism worldwide. Nine charts show the toll on global travel.
US President Donald Trump’s “America First” policies have cut into travel worldwide. The simmering trade war, the crackdown at the border and the rollback of LGBTQ rights—capped by a ban on visitors from a dozen countries announced on June 4—have led to tens of thousands of canceled trips. With travelers choosing alternate destinations, the American economy will lose out on $12.5 billion this year, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council—which will widen the trade deficit, because economists count spending by visitors to the country as an export. Here’s a look at the toll the president’s policies have taken on travel, in nine charts.

The US is such a laughing stock it's close to being a pariah state. No country on Earth takes it seriously. Even Russia is laughing at it.

by Anonymousreply 3June 6, 2025 9:33 AM

I’m loathe to travel now with stories about people getting harassed about their political beliefs and loyalty when returning to the country.

by Anonymousreply 4June 6, 2025 9:42 AM

As an American, I would not travel here either.

by Anonymousreply 5June 6, 2025 9:44 AM

What R3 says is unfortunately true.

by Anonymousreply 6June 6, 2025 10:11 AM

The current state of things is unbelievable, and only likely to get worse as Trump anesthetizes/normalizes the harassment (and much worse) of everyone foreign, and anyone American.

by Anonymousreply 7June 6, 2025 10:12 AM

I just started wearing my MAKE AMERICA GO AWAY ball cap and people keep stopping me to ask where they can buy one.

by Anonymousreply 8June 6, 2025 10:46 AM

This was obviously going to be inevitable result of Trump's actions.

by Anonymousreply 9June 6, 2025 1:53 PM

Last November Americans fucked around. Now they're finding out.

by Anonymousreply 10June 6, 2025 1:55 PM

I’m not seeing any reduction in travel prices.

by Anonymousreply 11June 6, 2025 2:00 PM

We already got too damn many feriners here.

by Anonymousreply 12June 6, 2025 2:02 PM

Well sadly, most of the places people come here to see are in blue states. California being one of the biggest of them. NYC as well. How many people from France book a flight to travel all the way across the Atlantic to visit Tulsa Oklahoma? Or even a bigger city like Huston Texas? Not many.

by Anonymousreply 13June 6, 2025 9:50 PM

Only $12 billion?

by Anonymousreply 14June 7, 2025 2:14 AM

R13, the most visited state for international tourists is deep red Florida.

by Anonymousreply 15June 7, 2025 3:20 AM
I’m loathe to travel now with stories about people getting harassed about their political beliefs and loyalty when returning to the country.

Entering or re-entering the U.S. as a U.S. citizen, even with Global Entry and other fast track programs is not always the most agreeable of international entries. I moved outside the U.S. some years ago, and there's almost no chance in hell I would visit in these next four years at least.

by Anonymousreply 19June 7, 2025 9:38 AM

I returned from an international trip yesterday. The line was very long for entry but it moved amazingly fast. There were just cameras used to identify U.S. passport holders and no need to show a passport. It really was a breeze and no worse than the process I experienced landing in Europe two weeks ago. The only silly thing is having to retrieve your luggage off of the carousel and then wheel it over to have it taken back by the airline for connecting flight.

by Anonymousreply 20June 7, 2025 10:45 AM

I fully support people avoiding us for travel. I too am trying to direct any travel money to blue states or other countries only.

But the fear of harassment at entry is a whole lot of exaggeration. If you had a 99.8% chance of no issues before, you have a 99.6% chance today. Social media and clickbait media is expert at taking freaky edge cases and blowing them out of proportion and representing them as being the standard experience. I’ve had about 8 international entries since Trump took office, and I haven’t seen so much as a whisper of anything being different on any level.

by Anonymousreply 21June 7, 2025 2:05 PM

Agreed, R21. I recall one case where the woman entering told CBP she was coming to work. Turns out she didn't have the correct paperwork for that status. Yet, she was hailed as a "Trump victim".

Seems like a justification for a lot of anti-American sentiment that already existed.

by Anonymousreply 22June 7, 2025 2:23 PM

R22, No, that case was that she had done some babysitting to help pay for the apartment she stayed in. CBP took that as “work” and sent her to the standard ICE gulag

by Anonymousreply 23June 7, 2025 2:59 PM

Come to the US your own risk.

Yesterday, there was video of a Chilean woman, in NYC on vacation with her 12 year old daughter, suddenly handcuffed and arrested near Madison Square Garden. They forced her into a black car, leaving her 12 year old daughter to fend for herself on the street. They ultimately released her 8 hours later, admitting their mistake.

THIS COULD HAPPEN TO NY TOURIST

by Anonymousreply 24June 7, 2025 3:02 PM

I was hopjng Covid would kill off those fucking tour buses clogging up NYC streets but maybe this will finally do it.

by Anonymousreply 25June 7, 2025 3:06 PM
the fear of harassment at entry is a whole lot of exaggeration.

I've watched a number of vlogs by European YouTube creators who have traveled to the U.S. this year and who have informed their followers that they experienced none of the issues that the press and others have been trying to convince travelers are a common occurrence.
I recall one case where the woman entering told CBP she was coming to work. Turns out she didn't have the correct paperwork for that status.

It is a lesson though. Don't travel to the U.S. on a tourist visa and then do any kind of work in exchange for something of value and expect to get away with it. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

by Anonymousreply 26June 7, 2025 3:10 PM
I was hopjng Covid would kill off those fucking tour buses clogging up NYC streets but maybe this will finally do it.

All the street crime and murders in NYC should reduce tourism there, but if people are still willing to risk death or severe bodily injury by traveling to NYC, the additional "threat" of immigration enforcement isn't going to affect things much.

by Anonymousreply 27June 7, 2025 3:15 PM

R23 Actually, it was Canada that rejected her entry and then when she got walked back to the US, they handled her accordingly. But that part of the story always gets buried.

In my small Floriduh beach town Dec-April the boycott of the Canadian snow birds has caused the condo & AirBnd market to collapse. All redneck Trumper bartenders, cooks, waitresses, waiters and poll dancers were laid off. Karma suks for Curtis & Charleen.

by Anonymousreply 34June 7, 2025 3:37 PM

Most people I know are cutting back on travel and spending due to the uncertainty of the US economy.

And why would foreign travelers want to come here? The US is a cesspool of crazy isolationist policy right now.

by Anonymousreply 35June 7, 2025 3:39 PM

R26 thinks people should be detained by ICE for the "crime" of babysitting 🙄

by Anonymousreply 36June 7, 2025 3:45 PM

R27, New York actually doesn't have a high homicide rate compared to most big cities. Miami (which has a GOP mayor) actually has a higher violent crime rate than New York. Maybe you didn't know that, since Fox loves to talk about crime in New York while ignoring crime in more conservative areas

by Anonymousreply 37June 7, 2025 3:48 PM

There are great flight deals all over the place. Many seats have opened up. There are 400rt NY-Europe tickets for fall. And Latin America now, which is usually high season, 300rt to a bunch of cities. 200 to PR with a lot of flights for a quick trip, it's cheaper than any NY/NJ beach weekend. Aruba too. Since most airlines let you hold for 24 hours you have a chance to think about it and look at hotels.

by Anonymousreply 38June 7, 2025 3:48 PM

Cement-headed GOP/MAGAts pride themselves on being "the party of business", but over at least the last hundred years THEY ARE TERRIBLE for business!

Lower growth, higher debt, shitty jobs record, financial disasters, recessions! Only true morons think that economics improves by electing Republicans! Only the opposite has ever been true.

by Anonymousreply 39June 7, 2025 4:10 PM

R39, yep. Dem presidents create more jobs and the GDP has grown more under Dem presidents. Despite the "tax and spend" Republican smears Trump added more to the debt than Biden, Obama, or Clinton

by Anonymousreply 40June 7, 2025 4:23 PM
the most visited state for international tourists is deep red Florida.

that does not count, 90% of that is people going to Disney World, not the state for it's natural beauty or cultural history.

by Anonymousreply 41June 7, 2025 7:40 PM

R32 When she was handed over with suspicion from Canada, that automatically stacked the deck against her. U.S. agents went on overdrive thinking “what’s going on here, there must be more to this story”. Not saying these cases don’t exist or defending how some people are handled. I’m saying edge cases like this have always existed, even before Trump if you can believe it, but are getting over represented and fed into a narrative that ignites into the frenzy.

All that said, I totally understand people not wanting to come here and I support them. I just don’t think fear of this stuff is a particularly valid reason for 99% of normal people. If you have a popular podcast titled “Trump belongs on trial in The Hague”, then you have my full support but yeah, probably best for you to stay away.

by Anonymousreply 42June 7, 2025 8:02 PM

I wonder if the NYC Marathon in November will be affected.

by Anonymousreply 43June 7, 2025 8:22 PM

R20, how did they identify US passport holders if they didn't have to show their passport?

by Anonymousreply 44June 7, 2025 8:30 PM
poll dancers were laid off

Poll dancers? That must be fun! Something to look at while you wait to cast your ballot!

BTW, when I flew back into Orlando from Panama last week, at least a third of the people on the plane were planning to visit Disney and the other theme parks. There was a group who had matching sweatshirts (boy, were [italic]they[/italic] gonna be hot!), and my seatmate, accompanied by his wife and kids, was asking me questions about the beaches and Busch Gardens. Most of the passengers were [bold]not[/bold] Panamanians; Copa Air has a "stopover in Panama" program, so many of them were actually from Colombia and points south.
that does not count, 90% of that is people going to Disney World, not the state for it's natural beauty or cultural history.

And pray tell, that doesn't count because...? I'm thinking the oodles of cash they bring into the state of Florida every swingin' day counts for [italic]something.[/italic] And trust me when I tell you that these people just couldn't wait to get to Disney.

by Anonymousreply 45June 7, 2025 8:48 PM

R44: we have new technology that matches a photo on arrival to the one on file in your passport.

by Anonymousreply 46June 7, 2025 9:06 PM

R41, they spend a lot of money, dummy, which is the point of the thread. All those hotel rooms, meals, souvenirs and theme park tickets add a huge amount to the Florida economy.

Does it "not count" because ir's not the sort of vacation you would take? You sound really out of touch.

My expat friend was visiting from Germany with her half Turkish husband and their kids and they were held at customs for.9 hours. For no reason. She literally still has an American passport. Her kids and husband are a little dark, but she's been making this trip back to the states for years and this time she was legitimately fearful. She's not coming back for 3 more years

by Anonymousreply 57June 8, 2025 5:32 AM

R42 speaking as someone from a country which is a former ally of USA I can tell you that (based on news reports and conversations with friends who travel - and Australians travel a lot) the decision to stay away is primarily for:

Not wanting to endorse the Trump administration in any way by spending our dollars there. People started talking about this in November then once the Trump administration’s reign of chaos started in earnest in January, particularly with the insults and tariff threats to our Commonwealth cousins in Canada but also to Greenland and Mexico, it has gathered steam. We don’t like bullies here.

Concern with experience on arrival at USA entry ports. It was always bad enough dealing with the Homeland Security Neanderthals at LAX after a 14 hour overnight flight - but now with reports of people being detained for specious reasons, even though the numbers are small - people just won’t risk it.

I have a large circle of friends who travel as much as I do and who would be in the USA at least annually for work, VFR, holidays and stuff like skiing and I know of nobody who hasn’t decided to boycott until at least 2028.

Throw into the mix friends with kids studying in the north east and California (very common here) who are bringing them home and people like me checking labels in the supermarket to make sure nothing comes from the USA - easy, we don’t import much food - and this in a middle power with a small population like Australia and you’ll possibly realise the global impact of that fat orange fuckstick and his supporters.

I’m looking forward to life returning to normal but that seems a long way away. Good luck!

Oh do fuck off R59 and R60 - I knew when I posted that that there would be some persnickety old Trump supporting queen who would try and find fault and do some random googling to support their non-argument. As I’ve had cause to state on the DL before - the hatred for Australia from some of DL’s maiden aunt brigade, while inexplicable from people who have never been here, is inevitable.

Get your hell hole of a dictatorship sorted out before casting aspersions at democracies - you no longer live in one.

It must be time for you to get mother’s gruel ready before you wheel her off to church.

by Anonymousreply 61June 8, 2025 10:45 AM

R58 I just googled “USA bullying statistics” and was returned pages of results, which I won’t bother posting here as it does nothing to bolster anybody’s argument.

It would be the same for Zimbabwe, Greenland, Argentina or the Galápagos Islands and proves nothing. Do better, you silly old queen. Your country elected Trump and you have to live with the consequences. I can see that that would sting for some of you.

by Anonymousreply 62June 8, 2025 10:50 AM

R61, you’re definitely not as good at the bullying that the Australians are so well known for, but maybe you’re just being a screaming queen?

by Anonymousreply 63June 8, 2025 10:54 AM

Not understanding you, R63, although I’m sure that it makes sense to you. Perhaps you should consider reviewing your posts before hitting the Post button.

Question for Americans - is it cheaper to holiday in Mexico or Miami?

by Anonymousreply 65June 8, 2025 11:06 AM

Oh dear! R63 is beyond furious that her country has turned into a total shithole and laughing stock of the world and now other nationalities have the hide to call Americans out on it! How DARE they! How DARE they think the can speak to an American like that! Imagine saying something critical to someone from the best country in the entire galaxy!

So let's talk about bullying R63. The US is the most famous bully in the western world. Bullying, nastiness and cruelty towards those less fortunate than yourselves is part of your DNA and a valued American personal quality. Americans constantly bully and vilify the gays and the LGBT, the blacks, the browns, the women, the poor, the uninsured, the trans, the people from other countries - need I go on?

You might want to pretend to be just a little contrite for the mess you cunts have caused to the world and STFU for the first time in your life. That's what I would do right now if I was an American.

And don't be lying to us all by saying that only 77 million Americans voted for this lethal clownshow so it's not ALL Americans. Every single one of you is responsible. The 77 million who voted for MAGA. The cunts who didn't vote at all (not voting is a political action) and the rest of you who just sat there and watched this all developing for the last 20 years and did nothing except whine and get fatter. It's your country - STFU and do something about it fatty.

by Anonymousreply 66June 8, 2025 11:08 AM

Is the longstanding, pervasive culture of bullying in Australia a sensitive subject for you. R66?

by Anonymousreply 67June 8, 2025 11:14 AM

R67 - I'm a different poster than the one you're talking to at R58.

American culture revolves around bullying so I wouldn't be throwing stones in a glass house.

by Anonymousreply 68June 8, 2025 11:25 AM

My friend married an American about a year ago. He crosses from Canada into the US every other week, same border crossing. He said for the most part it’s been okay, a few more questions. This week the guard goes through his duffle bag and asks how long he’s staying. He said a couple nights. The guard asks why he’s packed so many clothes if he’s only staying a couple nights. He had two tank tops, a t-shirt and a change of underwear.

by Anonymousreply 69June 8, 2025 11:55 AM

Some touchy people in here for literally no reason (yes I said literally). I’m not r52 but r53, what is your problem? R52 is correct, Vegas markets itself to a wide swathe of people, working class and up, so when it becomes too pricey, people stop going. Still doesn’t warrant your answer, you didn’t offer other evidence, just insulted the poster for no reason. What does that say about you? (Literally you’re MAGA.)

Yes, r59 and r60 are MAGA as well, I’ve had them blocked and I only block MAGA. I can guess they’re saying there are countries that are bigger bullies than America. Oh my sides! That’s laughable, just google “Trump bully” and tell me he’s not the biggest bully in the world.

by Anonymousreply 70June 8, 2025 1:29 PM

Weekends always bring out the brainless MAGAs here.

by Anonymousreply 71June 8, 2025 1:30 PM

I live in a Maine tourist trap with a large percentage of visitors coming from Canada. I have yet to see a Canadian license plate in town and that is VERY unusual!

by Anonymousreply 72June 8, 2025 1:48 PM

They're so obvious in their deflection attempts. Someone posts a personal account of what people in their country are saying about Trump and the US's forceful foreign policy and torching of traditional allies, and the MAGAts ignore the criticisms that are entirely based in fact and start attacking that country's culture, as perceived from a 2 second google search. A culture that, famously, closely resembles our own, and a point that we should not be throwing stones about because "bully" is the very definition of the US and our country's actions right now.

These people are complete morons who believe we all similarly possess 1 reptilian brain cell that can't hold a slightly complex thought for more than half a second. They could also be AI bots. Who the fuck knows. Either way they are pitifully dumb.

by Anonymousreply 73June 8, 2025 1:49 PM

Repeat question for Americans - is it cheaper to holiday in Mexico or Miami?

by Anonymousreply 74June 8, 2025 1:57 PM
I have a large circle of friends who travel as much as I do and who would be in the USA at least annually for work, VFR, holidays and stuff like skiing and I know of nobody who hasn’t decided to boycott until at least 2028.

R58, agreed. I live in Europe and most of my friends outside North America have volunteered similar decisions. All of the bad news from the U.S. has coalesced and reflecting on plans (concrete or vague), they've come to the conclusion that other places are more agreeable options. They're not bitter or angry, just aware that it's not a peak time for trouble free visit.

The American puffery about how much better and greater the U.S., even if it wasn't taken entirely at face value before, is suddenly in a position of being viewed a little more critically.

Mexico is about 1/3 the price for everything in America. Yes, a LOT cheaper, but much, much more dangerous. DO NOT rent a car and explore on your own. The Mexican people are very friendly but the drug cartel run the small towns and out number the police which are also in on the deal some times. The drug cartel is very, very violet and use tourists as pawns. Stay in big cities or well known tourist destinations.

In fact, a lot cheaper. Those little Mexican boys are little whores. Even the dancers in gay bars are a lot more slutty there. They are very much into daddies. Especially generous daddies. And by generous I mean 20 dollars.
