It sounds as though medical debt was part of the driver of their financial problems. Why would a 2-day stay in a hospital cost $130,000? And why wouldn't a couple with 3 young children not have medical insurance? That seems.....um.......optimistic?

I don’t understand why people would suggest he get a job coaching. What are his qualifications except having been a good swimmer? Lots of people were good swimmers. Being the best vs. top 10 or too 100 or top 1000 is only an incrementally better qualification. A good coach at the university level has a few brain cells. High school coaches barely get paid. It’s only financially appealing if it’s incremental on top of a teacher’s salary and benefits. Otherwise it’s an hobby, not a job. And, really, who is going to trust him with teenagers?

I hope this garners some attention and shames the hospital trying to charge him over $100k for two days. But I suspect that is inaccurate. I’m guessing he was at a rehab that was not fully covered by his insurance for a lot longer than 2 days.

Is the $270K all credit card debt, or does that include the taxes he owes and his mortgage?
