Remember when Crystal Waters gave us Homeless Chic?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 5, 2025 1:29 PM |
From the archives…. There was an actual homeless woman, and Crystal makes sure they used that word in the song title.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 3, 2025 2:56 PM |
Poor Crystal, this parody just incinerated her song.
It's the first thing I remember when someone says her name.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 3, 2025 2:57 PM |
She needs to update this song for 2025 as "Romani Woman (She's Unhoused)".
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 3, 2025 2:59 PM |
R3, I think of that every time too!
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 3, 2025 3:26 PM |
I hated that fucking song.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 3, 2025 3:34 PM |
Great niece of the incomparable Ethel Waters.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 3, 2025 3:38 PM |
She has no idea what suffering is.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 3, 2025 3:38 PM |
"Unhoused Sex Worker (She's a Hero)"
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 3, 2025 3:46 PM |
Gypsy woman and 100% pure love have huge respect and regard as musical classics, especially within the dance music community. They are still being updated, remixed, re-edited and resembled for young club audiences. The in living color parody hardly incinerated it.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | June 3, 2025 3:51 PM |
Love this song. What an ear worm! La da dee, la da da...
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 3, 2025 3:56 PM |
Oh wow, that just made my brain rot a little, thanks for that, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 3, 2025 3:58 PM |
This was so overplayed in gay clubs back in the day. It was fine for awhile, but it became too much. I feel the same way about Finally by CeCe Peniston.
There are some songs that people hook on to and they never die. They're ruined by the constant play.
I liked 100% Pure Love by Crystal Waters too - but it doesn't give me the feels anymore.
There are a lot of bangers from that era that still hold up - this doesn't for me. Making Happy by CW still does it for me - but it wasn't played to death.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | June 3, 2025 4:28 PM |
I can't stand Gypsy Woman.
But I can never tire of hearing100% Pure Love.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 3, 2025 4:34 PM |
This song reminds me of the summer of 1991.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 3, 2025 4:36 PM |
I love that song, no matter idiotic it is
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 3, 2025 6:03 PM |
As far as tributes to homeless women go, it cannot compare to "I Got My Education" by Uncanny Alliance.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 3, 2025 6:06 PM |
Uncanny Alliance had perhaps the greatest unfulfilled promise of a dance act of the 90s. Both singles were awesome, and then, bupkes.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 3, 2025 6:26 PM |
Crystal Waters needs a “straight down the shitter” thread.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | June 3, 2025 6:31 PM |

How about some respect for the OG bag lady?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 3, 2025 7:29 PM |
It exemplified what labels wanted 1984 to sound like.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | June 4, 2025 2:42 AM |
when I wanted them to sound like1983 forever and ever..
by Anonymous | reply 24 | June 4, 2025 2:45 AM |
She mentioned in an interview that she was hurt by the In Living Color parody at the time, but she can laugh about it now.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | June 4, 2025 3:14 AM |
She seems to be doing just fine. Touring, traveling, looking great and still very plugged into the house music community as an elder stateswoman. A person can make a living and have an incredible life in that world without causing a ripple as a household name and she’s managed to do both, with 2 hits from the 90s that have shown more longevity than those made by some of the decades top acts. Are people still dancing to en vogue and Toni Braxton in the club? I do t think so.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 4, 2025 9:26 AM |
Uncanny Alliance "I Got My Education" is just downright evil. I love the Masters at Work remix.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 4, 2025 6:39 PM |
I loved how Uncanny Alliance served the T on her out of touch virtue-signalling.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 4, 2025 6:47 PM |
I loved the song. There was always an element of darkness to it.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 4, 2025 7:01 PM |
I hope she made some money off of the countless remixes and samples.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 4, 2025 7:42 PM |
I Got My Education was so much fucking FUN on the dance floor.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 4, 2025 7:47 PM |
R23 - I don't understand - a 1991 song wanted to sound like 1984? What?
The sound was very 1990ish.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 4, 2025 7:50 PM |
I guess you could say she was TOUCHED BY A HOBO
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 4, 2025 8:26 PM |
Why did she write a dance song about a Gypsy?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 4, 2025 8:27 PM |
It worked for Stevie Nicks
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 4, 2025 9:35 PM |
That In Living Color thing isn’t even funny. I guess for the time it was something but it’s just so incredibly lame.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 4, 2025 9:58 PM |
R36 - beats 90% of SNL skits. Kim Wayans was very good on that show.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | June 4, 2025 10:40 PM |
I always felt Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner," the DNA remix, paved the way for "Gypsy Woman."
by Anonymous | reply 38 | June 4, 2025 10:51 PM |
The MadTV parody wasn't so much punchline falling down laughing funny as it was savage at capturing that song and ripping it to shreds.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 4, 2025 11:01 PM |
They played the audio of the MAD sketch on morning radio once and all of us in the car pool were in hysterics.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | June 4, 2025 11:06 PM |
I don't mind the parody, but calling her talentless was nasty and left a bad taste in my mouth.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 5, 2025 3:51 AM |
The EBNOZN single sounded like 1984. That was the point I was making.
Gypsy Woman > Show Me Love. Fight me
by Anonymous | reply 42 | June 5, 2025 4:33 AM |
"Poor Crystal, this parody just incinerated her song."
It was mega successful before the parody and still played afterwards. It obviously grossly made fun of the song, but I don't think the effect was that negative.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 5, 2025 5:13 AM |
If we're cataloging Crystal's hits, let's not forget this one. I thought it was massively stupid when it came out, but it grew on me over time and now lives on my dance playlists.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 5, 2025 6:56 AM |
Sadly, r44, that just kind of proves the accuracy of the In Living Color parody
by Anonymous | reply 45 | June 5, 2025 1:06 PM |
She writes from what she knows, okay? And she don't know much, hence those lyrics.
