Classic Twin Bed

I have been fortunate to have had a queen size bed in every apartment I have lived in NYC. I have a small one bedroom and need a new bed. I really don't need a queen size and am very happy sleeping by myself and have been doing so for the past decade. I have a boyfriend who has his own place and even when we travel, we get a room with 2 beds. When we cuddle, it is on a sofa, so a full/queen size bed to share is not necessary. I would probably be happier with more space in the bedroom, but not sure if I want to. I will at least go down to full size.

Has anyone downsized their bed size and felt good about it?

I started a thread about this once and was accused of surreptitious marketing research.

I sleep on a twin mattress but the frame is a bit wider with a wide board on both long sides. So there are several inches between the mattress and the wall. I load that with pillows and they dont take up mattress space. I have slept on a twin mattress now for 20 years and don't mind at all. Also I throw out the mattress every few years so everything says fresh and clean.

by Anonymousreply 2June 1, 2025 9:43 PM

Sorry to hear that, r1!

by Anonymousreply 3June 1, 2025 9:44 PM

Do you have pets or might get one in the future? If so, stick with a full. Even if you are one of those "no pets on furniture!" it's nice to have the option to snuggle them.

by Anonymousreply 4June 1, 2025 9:44 PM

So get a full size mattress. It's in between a twin and queen. It's what I have. Copy me because I am a mattress influencer.

by Anonymousreply 5June 1, 2025 9:46 PM

Two twin mattresses actually make a king, not a queen, nor a double. A twin bed actually, I think, gives you more room than any other bed. you just have to sleep alone.

by Anonymousreply 6June 1, 2025 9:50 PM

Good news everyone! SleepNumber has a full-size mattress that's economical.

by Anonymousreply 7June 1, 2025 9:51 PM

I love my full-size, but it's getting harder to find bedding for it.

Everybody wants a queen! Whoda thunk it?

by Anonymousreply 8June 1, 2025 9:54 PM

And they are making the full sized mattresses smaller now. I just replace a full with a full and my sheets are too big and the bed frame too large. Had to stuff extra towels down the sides to balance.

by Anonymousreply 9June 1, 2025 9:57 PM

I have a Queen but what I really want is a canopy for it. Love those.

by Anonymousreply 10June 1, 2025 10:00 PM

Why don't you get a daybed that pulls out to a queen for when you need it?

A single twin bed is awful - it's not a dorm room.

Or get a Murphy bed.

by Anonymousreply 11June 1, 2025 10:03 PM

R11 And those dorm rooms always had "Extra Long Twin" mattresses. Seemed random to me (but I'm short).

by Anonymousreply 12June 1, 2025 10:13 PM

I no longer have interest in furniture made from packing crates.

by Anonymousreply 13June 1, 2025 10:30 PM

Can you get a queen sized daybeds? I’ve only seen twin or maybe a full

by Anonymousreply 14June 1, 2025 10:33 PM

I'm sorry, but a grown man voluntarily sleeping in a twin bed will never not be off-putting to me. I would assume he had just recently been released from prison or a funny farm and had become too institutionalized on the on the inside to feel comfortable any longer in big boy beds

by Anonymousreply 15June 2, 2025 12:44 AM

When I was a kid I had a "single" bed which seemed larger than a twin bed.

Am I imagining things, or are single beds and twin beds two different sizes?

by Anonymousreply 16June 2, 2025 12:52 AM

"Sleeping single in a double bed. . ."

by Anonymousreply 17June 2, 2025 1:01 AM

Not with all my expensive sheet sets, OP

by Anonymousreply 18June 2, 2025 1:39 AM

There's something comforting about being in a smaller space. I love the more compact feel of a cozy, well-decorated room vs. a large and empty room with no character. I'm not against a twin sized bed but a full makes more sense as an adult. I could totally sleep on a twin as a guest for a night or long weekend.

by Anonymousreply 19June 2, 2025 1:48 AM

I had a queen and had to downsize in my (at the time) new apartment. I got a full size. I am a toss turner, frequently difficult to get to sleep kind of gal. I also have a dog who sleeps in my bed and for some reason, every dog I have ever had INSISTS on sleeping dead center of the bed. I miss my queen size bed.

by Anonymousreply 20June 2, 2025 2:37 AM

R20 Isn't this all dogs? Mine would always start tiny and sweet at the corner of the bed and then slowly inch their way into the center, somehow doubling their size and core body temperature throughout the night. By morning I'd be the one curled up in the corner.

by Anonymousreply 21June 2, 2025 4:28 AM

I’m perfectly fine with a full bed. It seems proportional being neither (overly) fat nor a whore.

by Anonymousreply 22June 2, 2025 5:10 AM

Have had an extra wide California King for about 25 years now. I've always slept on the edge of the bed, taking up little space. Also, I'm small (5'6", 140lbs). For many years, it was for my (ex) and I. Then myself and three cats - who glomed onto me, so we really only took up 25% of the space. It was a small room, but I loved having a sea of sleeping space at night. The cats got old and "expired" -- I still miss them -- and then I got married to a bigger guy who tosses and turns. And sweats. He had a queen bed. I often got elbowed in the face. When I stayed over at his place or when we stayed in hotels, smaller beds seemed confining. We just moved in to a larger house with a huge Master Bedroom. The CA King bed no longer takes up the whole room! Looking forward to adopting cats after we're settled in. I've always lived in small spaces and drove small cars. But a big bed just feels so luxurious, even when populated by other men and cats.

by Anonymousreply 23June 2, 2025 5:26 AM

My dog won’t sleep on my bed. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong 🥲

by Anonymousreply 24June 2, 2025 5:28 AM

I've slept with a lot of dogs, r24.

Oh wait, you're talking about animals.....

Never mind

by Anonymousreply 25June 2, 2025 5:33 AM

If a Full had the same length as a Twin XL, I'd get a Full.

Still, I'm happy with my Twin XL except that bedding is more limited

by Anonymousreply 26June 2, 2025 5:41 AM

Fuck you, R17!

by Anonymousreply 27June 2, 2025 6:25 AM

I'm over 6 feet tall so a single or full bed isn't long enough. It's difficult to keep my head high up enough in the bed all night and my feet end up going past the bottom of the bed. It's not an issue with the width because I usually sleep at the right edge of the bed anyway. I've slept on a queen size bed since I was in the single digits.

by Anonymousreply 28June 2, 2025 7:06 AM

R28 Get a German mattress, they were 220cm long.

by Anonymousreply 29June 2, 2025 9:48 AM

I'm tall and so accustomed to short beds that I can't sleep unless my bare feet are hanging out.

by Anonymousreply 30June 2, 2025 11:10 AM

R29 Just a typical single bed in Europe is 200cm in length. That's close to 4 inches longer than a US twin bed. It's enough to make a big difference for me. I spend several months a year in Europe and have no worries if the place I'm staying has a single size bed. Unfortunately, it's a bit of an issue getting a European standard mattress, frame and sheets in the US making that not a great option. Seems easier just to get a standard US queen size if living in the US.

by Anonymousreply 31June 2, 2025 11:36 AM

I have a twin bed, in the guest room. Guests never want to stay more than 2 nights.

by Anonymousreply 32June 2, 2025 12:10 PM

I have a hide-a-bed that serves the same purpose.

by Anonymousreply 33June 2, 2025 1:21 PM

No guest room at all is even better. A twin is much better than the couch.

by Anonymousreply 34June 2, 2025 2:49 PM

A twin bed is so tiny! But then I’m tall.

Trying not to judge but I am kind of with R15.

by Anonymousreply 35June 2, 2025 2:55 PM

More about mattress sizes:

A standard twin or full mattress is 75" long. However, queen, king and twin XL mattresses are 80" long. A king mattress is the size of two twin XLs. In other words, the only time you need to worry about a short mattress is if you purchase a standard twin or full.

R31, a euro mattress at 200 cm is about 78 3/4" which is a bit shorter than many U.S. mattress sizes. It is longer only than a standard twin or a full. A twin XL would be the right choice, if you want a twin mattress that is the same length as a euro mattress.

by Anonymousreply 36June 2, 2025 5:06 PM

Northern Germans are tall and they need the extra long mattress for their XL Schwanstuckers

by Anonymousreply 37June 2, 2025 5:34 PM

XL Twin for an XL man?

by Anonymousreply 38June 2, 2025 6:56 PM

Check out the SleepNumber sizes.
