SNL movie spin-offs. Why?

Just this week I remembered there was an “It’s…Pat!” movie also. I’d forgotten all about that but was pulling up old SNL Pat skits from YouTube. I always heard the movie sucked so I’ve never seen it.

Wayne’s World was hilarious.

The Coneheads. Oooph.

There was also a Stuart Smalley movie (that was actually pretty funny).

Wasn't there supposed to be a Mr Bill movie?

I wouldn't mind a movie based on "The Ambiguously Gay Duo".

Parts of Superstar were funny.

The two cheerleaders - Cheri Oteri and Will Ferrell - might have carried a 90 minute movie.

I actually liked MacGruber.

Me too, r10. It's not for everyone but I thought it was funny and well-made. Val Kilmer was a good sport.

It made more financial sense in the 90s when entertainment options were a little more limited

SNL sucks so of course, their movies did too.

That Coneheads movie was abysmal. All these talented people and it’s a massive pile of crap. At least screenwriters Bonnie and Terry Turner redeemed themselves a few years later with The Brady Bunch Movie.

Why? Too much money that needed to be spent quickly. These ridiculous movies were the answer.

That’s exactly it, R13. The film industry of 2025 is barely even in the same business as the film industry of the 90s. Then, it made all the sense in the world to cram known IP into a feature length film that would make some money at the box office, then even more on VHS and cable. Now, much less so.

If we had to endure Pat and MacGruber, I'm surprised we didn't also get subjected to Debbie Downer and Dooneese.

Wayne's World and Blue Brothers were the only ones that were good (and only the first ones, not the sequels)
