SNL movie spin-offs. Why?

Crappy characters given their own 90 minutes in the sun. MacGruber, Night at the Roxbury, Superstar... Hollywood money laundering at its best.

Just this week I remembered there was an “It’s…Pat!” movie also. I’d forgotten all about that but was pulling up old SNL Pat skits from YouTube. I always heard the movie sucked so I’ve never seen it.

by Anonymousreply 1June 1, 2025 10:57 PM

Wayne’s World was hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 2June 1, 2025 11:41 PM

The Coneheads. Oooph.

There was also a Stuart Smalley movie (that was actually pretty funny).

by Anonymousreply 3June 1, 2025 11:59 PM

Wasn't there supposed to be a Mr Bill movie?

by Anonymousreply 4June 2, 2025 12:13 AM

R4 I think there was.?

by Anonymousreply 5June 2, 2025 12:19 AM

I wouldn't mind a movie based on "The Ambiguously Gay Duo".

by Anonymousreply 6June 2, 2025 12:26 AM

R4 If so, please share the title.

by Anonymousreply 7June 2, 2025 2:21 AM

Parts of Superstar were funny.

by Anonymousreply 8June 2, 2025 2:22 AM

The two cheerleaders - Cheri Oteri and Will Ferrell - might have carried a 90 minute movie.

by Anonymousreply 9June 2, 2025 2:24 AM

I actually liked MacGruber.

by Anonymousreply 10June 2, 2025 2:34 AM

Doctor Who should have regenerated into Pat

I would have started watching it again

by Anonymousreply 11June 2, 2025 2:46 AM

Me too, r10. It's not for everyone but I thought it was funny and well-made. Val Kilmer was a good sport.

by Anonymousreply 12June 2, 2025 10:11 PM

It made more financial sense in the 90s when entertainment options were a little more limited

by Anonymousreply 13June 2, 2025 10:27 PM

SNL sucks so of course, their movies did too.

by Anonymousreply 14June 2, 2025 10:34 PM

That Coneheads movie was abysmal. All these talented people and it’s a massive pile of crap. At least screenwriters Bonnie and Terry Turner redeemed themselves a few years later with The Brady Bunch Movie.

by Anonymousreply 15June 3, 2025 12:41 AM

People are dumb and they enjoy garbage

by Anonymousreply 16June 3, 2025 12:51 AM

Why? Too much money that needed to be spent quickly. These ridiculous movies were the answer.

by Anonymousreply 17June 3, 2025 7:37 PM

OP doesn't know what "money laundering" is, does he?

by Anonymousreply 18June 3, 2025 7:38 PM

That’s exactly it, R13. The film industry of 2025 is barely even in the same business as the film industry of the 90s. Then, it made all the sense in the world to cram known IP into a feature length film that would make some money at the box office, then even more on VHS and cable. Now, much less so.

by Anonymousreply 19June 3, 2025 8:05 PM

If we had to endure Pat and MacGruber, I'm surprised we didn't also get subjected to Debbie Downer and Dooneese.

by Anonymousreply 20June 3, 2025 8:08 PM

Wayne's World and Blue Brothers were the only ones that were good (and only the first ones, not the sequels)

by Anonymousreply 21June 3, 2025 8:12 PM

Love Wayne's World and Blues Brothers..

I like Gilda Live as well. It has its moments.

by Anonymousreply 22June 3, 2025 9:35 PM

I love Superstar!

I assume they thought they'd make money given SNL's popularity.

by Anonymousreply 24June 4, 2025 12:22 AM

I'm still waiting for the movie version of Fred Garvin, male prostitute.

by Anonymousreply 25June 4, 2025 12:26 AM

Okay, Jodie, I would never ordinarily say this, but... is there any way you can get to a pound cake?
