UFC legend B.J. Penn arrested for 3rd time in 6 days

UFC Hall of Famer B.J. Penn was arrested again Friday in his home state of Hawaii in relation to his ongoing claims that his family has been murdered and replaced with imposters.

Penn's mother, Lorraine Shin, 79, filed for a temporary restraining order against her son this past week.

According to court documents obtained by MMA Fighting, Shin alleges she has endured “extreme psychological abuse” at the hands of her son, with Penn accusing her of being an imposter who “killed his family” and assumed his mother’s identity. Shin told a Hawaii court she believes her son suffers from Capgras syndrome, a rare psychological disorder that often causes people to falsely believe those close to them are imposters masquerading as family or friends.

BJ (*snicker*)

It's believed to be a neurological disorder, not a psychological one. Brain lesions or other signs of physical brain damage are usually found in sufferers. I wonder how a UFC fighter could have possibly come by something as unlikely as brain damage?

Is this the guy who supposedly attached a truck battery to his nips via jumper cables?? This guy's got problems.

I read about this affliction yesterday when I was browsing Wikipedia to see whether I have Alzheimer’s.

r9 what's the verdict?

r9 I forgot what affliction you're speaking of?

That is so scary. Poor guy. His family must be scared to death.

by Anonymousreply 12June 3, 2025 12:08 AM

Who is this dumb shit "Pete the Greek" from Chicago, recording the video of the arrest?

And why are they cops even talking to him? They should have arrested this asshole for obstruction of justice.

"I'm from Chicago, and this shit don't fly with me." HA!

Many people in the comments section are saying that this guy Pete is either his drug dealer, or enabler, or just some creepy leech.

It has to be CTE or some sort of brain damage.

I know I've seen at least a couple of TV shows that used that disorder as a plot device.

This does sound like a potential prequel to family annihilation, I'm sorry to say. I hope they'll be safe.

He seems a bit unhinged. Could it be schizophrenia? Don't know how old he is.

Interesting r20. Capgras syndrome—the belief that loved ones have been substituted with imposters—is seen in Lewy body dementia, schizophrenia, and most likely cause of this guy’s problems, brain injuries.

I worked at an SRO once and one of the residents had a similar delusion but that we’d replaced his possessions with replicas—swapped his sneakers for exact replicas a half size too small, or his pork sausages with chicken sausages. He wrote letters that he could hear us making fun of him in the hall and threatening him. Terrible. Poor people to have this be their reality.

by Anonymousreply 21June 3, 2025 2:27 AM

“ Most of the proposed explanations initially following that of Capgras and Reboul-Lachaux were psychoanalytical in nature. It was not until the 1980s that attention turned to the usually co-existing organic brain lesions originally thought to be essentially unrelated or coincidental. Today, the Capgras syndrome is understood as a neurological disorder, in which the delusion primarily results from organic brain lesions or degeneration.”

Maybe getting punched and kicked in the head repeatedly for a living isn’t such a good long term strategy.

by Anonymousreply 23June 3, 2025 2:35 AM

From the article, great guy Dana White, publicly belittling and abandoning this guy, says he won’t give him another fight because he got into a street fight caught on video. Yeah, I’m sure it had nothing to do with this guy’s record-breaking 7 consecutive losses. 7 consecutive UFC losses.

“ Penn last fought in the UFC in May 2019, suffering a then-record seventh consecutive loss. He was subsequently released by the UFC after video surfaced of Penn in a street fight outside a Hawaii bar.

“He won't fight again. That's it. That's a wrap,” UFC CEO Dana White said in 2019. “It's not even that this was the last straw. I didn't love him continuing to fight anyway. But when you have the relationship that he and I have, and he's getting me on the phone begging me for another fight, begging me for another opportunity, it's hard for me to turn him down. But after what I saw on that video, B.J. needs to focus on his personal life and get himself together before he thinks about fighting again.”

by Anonymousreply 24June 3, 2025 2:37 AM

Speak on that r23. What an interesting observation.

In related news, from the website BJPENN DOT COM, his official website.

I wonder if insane BJ Penn is writing these articles, himself?

[quote] UFC champ Jon Jones accused of performing ‘sexual act’ on male official

Veteran MMA referee John McCarthy has fired an incendiary accusation at UFC star Jon Jones.

Jones is the former UFC light heavyweight champion, and today, holds the promotion’s heavyweight title. His two-division title reign has cemented him as one of the greatest fighters in MMA history (even if he no longer watches the sport). However, he’s certainly no stranger to controversy in his life outside the cage.

He can expect another wave of controversy thanks to McCarthy.

Speaking to UFC veteran Josh Thomson on the Weighing In podcast, McCarthy recounted an incident from several years back when Jones allegedly attempted a “sexual act” on a male official from an athletic commission.

“I went into Jon’s locker room,” McCarthy said (via MMA Mania). “He’s bouncing around and having a good time. Says, ‘I’ve got a question for you.’ Says, ‘I need somebody.’ There’s an individual there, and that individual is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and was working for the commission.

And [Jones] says, ‘someone get on the ground with me.’ So this guy, being a ground guy, says, ‘Yeah I’ll do it for you, I know how to roll.’ So he goes down and says, ‘put me in guard,’ and Jon decides to do a sexual act on him.

“[Jones was] saying, ‘what if I do this, this isn’t illegal, right?’” the famed UFC referee added. “The guy who was on the ground, quickly his eyes went as big as they could get, like, ‘what are you doing?’ I said, ‘Jon, knock it off.’ I helped the person up. He goes, ‘Oh, I’m just joking — but really, what could you do?’

I said, ‘I could disqualify you for being unsportsmanlike. Go ahead and do it and let’s see what happens.’ This is why Jon and I never really got along, because I didn’t put up with his shit. (Coach) Greg Jackson comes up and says, ‘John, I’m sorry he did that.’ I said, ‘Greg, it ain’t you, he’s just a dipsh*t.’”

John McCarthy is one of the most respected and influential referees in MMA history. However, he did not specify what exactly Jon Jones did to the official. His accusation is also going to be very hard to verify unless somebody else comes forward with more information.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated.

I don’t think he’s had much to do with that website in years r29.

by Anonymousreply 30June 3, 2025 3:36 AM

On March 10 he posted two videos of his 79 year old mother doing chores around the house and walking a dog. He accused her of attempting to steal and sell his home. “If I attack her, she’ll try to do something,” he said.

by Anonymousreply 31June 3, 2025 4:06 AM

In a 2023 study of Capgras syndrome researchers stated “The propensity of violence in CS patients requires its speedy recognition and timely intervention.”

Imagine being this guy’s 80 year old mother and he thinks you’re her killer inhabiting her “skin suit”? The anger, fear, and grief combined with his skill and aggression?

Dana White is shit. He’ll be our next Secretary of Defense after Hegseth’s devalued and discarded.

There should be a mandatory retirement after so many knockouts, fights, years, whatever this damage is measured in. Imagine letting a guy lose seven consecutive UFC fights and acting like a hero when cutting him loose?

Ramachandran holds that we are so dependent on our emotional reactions to the world around us, that the emotional feeling "that's not my mother" wins out over the visual perception that it is. The compromise worked out by the brain is that your mother was somehow replaced, and this impostor is part of a malevolent scheme.

Ramachandran thinks there's good evidence for this explanation of Capgras, in part because of an odd quirk in his patient's behavior. When his mother calls him on the phone and he hears her voice, he instantly recognizes her. Yet if she walks in the room after that call, he is again convinced that she is an impostor.

Why? Ramachandran says that our visual system and auditory system have different connections to the amygdala, so while the auditory recognition triggers an emotional response in his patient, visual recognition does not.

by Anonymousreply 36June 3, 2025 4:36 AM

And that’s the image that the milquetoast USA Today published, r26. I shudder to think how gruesome the images get.

Because America thinks they can treat mental illness with threats, arrest and eventually incarceration.
