Marilyn Monroe was born 99 years ago today

Marilyn Monroe was born 99 years ago today. I remember in the 80s and 90s there was a push for Marilyn Monroe merchandise and memorabilia (I had my gift store at the time, and remember the vendors at the trade shows were filled with MM merchandise - from tees and handbags with her image on them, to expensive statues and figurines, calendars and posters, jewelry, etc.).

I did have a section of 'Classic Hollywood posters' in my store (especially popular with college kids and film buffs) and my #1 poster was the Marilyn / Chanel Perfume poster - which every gay man had to have framed and hung in their 'guest bathroom' (I heard that a thousand times). Other buyers included high school and college girls who were fascinated by Monroe and had to have the poster hanging in their bedrooms.

However, it looks like in the past 25+ years the Monroe interest has dwindled. I go in stores, and there's no more MM merchandise to be found (occasionally I'll find something in 'second hand stores') . Are MillennialGays and ZoomerGays not as interested in her as Eldergays once were ?

I should point out, the poster I carried was similar to this in tonal quality - it was more of a brown / sepia toned print of Monroe. Every gay man who wanted it framed (I had a friend who did framing on weekends, so I would bring them to him each week) wanted it framed in either gold, pink, or lavender. Never white, black or silver.

OP, do you think this "Okay, boomer" generation wants anything to do with a long dead movie star?

R3 I don't know - hence my post asking the question. Do you have an answer to contribute ?

Wow. She would've been long dead had she lived.

England's Rose, Diana:

36 years, 1 month, 30 days

Marilyn:

36 years, 2 months, 3 days

Close.

To me it seemed women, feminists even, had rediscovered her sometime in the 1970s and it endured from there. It almost became a common ground among gay men and women. Straight guys were in on it as well, she was their ideal.

I just watched Death Becomes Her yesterday and she looked great! Of course this was made 33 years ago. But once you drink the portion, what does that matter? Hope she was more careful than Meryl and Goldie.

"NOW a warning?"
