Op, what standards are you using for this thread? James Wolk was never even in many movies, so no one was pushing him as the next Tom Cruise.
To be considered, you’d have to be someone they pushed as an action star.
The closest example is Chris Pratt. For awhile he had an impossible run, not as good as The Rock, but the Rock is too ethnic to fit the bill. But Chris was the Tom Cruise of the 2010s.

r1 is actually correct about James Wolk, r3--no one really tried to make him a huge box office star at the movies., so he's not a good example.
Better analogies would be men whom the studios actually tried to put over as romantic leads in action movies, such as:
Josh Hartnett
Taylor Lautner
Taylor Kitsch
Sam Worthington
Robert Pattinson
Ben Affleck (who was one of the most successful).

Not Great. Bob!
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 1, 2025 9:21 PM |
His on screen energy always reminds me of Tom. I mean they kinda look like when Cruise was young, but they carry the same instincts on screen. I’ll conceit they didn’t really try to make him an action star but they were pushing him like the next George Clooney.

Zac Efron?

Megachurch asshole Chris Pratt.

His though, R10!
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 2, 2025 3:16 AM |
R7 is spot on.
Everyone in this thread is missing the real point:
Tom Cruise wasn’t “made” overnight. He started in small character-driven roles - Risky Business, All the Right Moves, Taps before Top Gun blew him up. Hollywood gave him room to grow into a star.
Most of these guys like Taylor Kitsch, Sam Worthington, Taylor Lautner were dropped straight into big-budget blockbusters without building any public affection first. They were mannequin action dolls, not movie stars.
If we’re talking about someone who actually had the Cruise build-up trajectory, it was Zac Efron. After High School Musical, he did Charlie St. Cloud, 17 Again, The Paperboy, The Lucky One.
Instead of taking action blockbusters, he took on comedy roles that really hurt him from going full Tom Cruise.

I remember Sean Faris being compared to Tom Cruise. His career never really went anywhere, though

Scott Wolf.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 2, 2025 3:45 AM |
I think they started Shia LaBeouf down that road, and then the crazy started to come out.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 2, 2025 6:17 AM |
Wolk was never slated to be the next Tom Cruise. Hollywood never tried making him a movie star. Most of his career is limited to tv. Tom Cruise was a movie star.
Throwing random names out doesn’t make it true.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 2, 2025 7:07 AM |
I don't know, r16. I think his crazy came out long after his career floundered. He's too goofy and niche to be a Tom Cruise type. I think r12 is right and Efron had more of chance to be huge.
To his credit, Shia LaBeouf was good in Constantine, Wall Street 2 (bad movie, good performance), American Honey and Honey Boy. He's a little more talented than Efron, imo.

R16 Shia Lebouf willingly walked away from the industry as he should have to get his mental health in check. Though I guess mental health still means you couldn’t sustain lol.

Didn't that supposed church boy Chris Pratt bang JLaw while he was still married to the first wife?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | June 2, 2025 9:06 PM |
R23 Denzel did become a huge star.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 2, 2025 9:58 PM |
You sure are stuck on Tom Cruise, Teacake.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 2, 2025 10:20 PM |
Denzel was never set up to be the next Tom Cruise. He just naturally became a leading man. Shit, he was thirty something when he won the Oscar for Glory.
Will Smith was set up to be the black Tom Cruise. You have to consider them peers because they are the same damn age and Smith came out in the early 90s.
R28 why stalk?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 2, 2025 10:24 PM |
I think RPattz could still do it. I don't think he wants it, though. He likes indie films.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 2, 2025 10:25 PM |
Ryan Reynolds OWNS this thread.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 2, 2025 10:26 PM |
Will Smith was never slated to be Tom Cruise. His career took off because of Fresh Prince and then Independence Day came out and was a blockbuster, making him into a movie star.
Hollywood/The Studio actually fought against casting him in Independence Day but in the end the director won and the rest is history.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 2, 2025 10:38 PM |
PS Will Smith films made more money globally than Tom Cruise films in the 90s.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 2, 2025 10:38 PM |
Not every actor Hollywood pushes is slated to be the next Tom Cruise. This thread is ridiculous. Wolk? Someone who has been legislated to forgettable tv roles?
Denzel? A man who won an Oscar for Glory, a slave film?
Will Smith, the lead of his own hit sitcom?
None of that is Tom Cruise.
Ridiculous thread.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 2, 2025 10:40 PM |
R33 Not the 90s, you mean 2000s.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 2, 2025 10:46 PM |
R34 Your ridiculous. Move away from this thread you choosy cunt.
Ryan Gosling was another they tried to make the next Tom.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 2, 2025 10:47 PM |
Again, they never tried making Gosling Tom. He’s best known for fucking romcoms and Barbie.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | June 2, 2025 10:49 PM |
Zac Efron defiantly fits this bill as someone mentioned.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | June 2, 2025 10:50 PM |
Hollywood trying to create new stars doesn’t mean they’re making them “the next Tom Cruise”. Gosling, Reynolds, etc. careers don’t mirror Tom Cruise at all. You’re just saying anything at this point.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | June 2, 2025 10:51 PM |
Gabourey Sidibe
by Anonymous | reply 40 | June 2, 2025 10:53 PM |
Ok r38. In what way does Zac Efron’s career mirror Tom Cruise? His filmography consists of lame college bro comedies, musicals and teen flicks. HSM mirrors Tom Cruise? 17 Again mirrors Tom Cruise? Neighbors?
As stated, you’re just naming anyone.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | June 2, 2025 10:55 PM |
R41 You filthy fuckin meticulous cunt.
Efron was in time movies like Tom. Pushed by Disney, just like Tom was pushed by paramount. Gay rumors EARLY in their career despite them visibly dating some of the most beautiful women on the planet. Efron just hasn’t found his A Few Good Men.
Now go away from my thread and stay away.
