According to this podcast. And she had the nerve to criticize Joan Crawford. Mercedes raised a mass murderer.
Mercedes McCambridge and her murderer son were nuttier than squirrel shit

Still not as bad as Joan

I'd like to read her book, The Quality of Mercy. I had it in hardcover and had barely started it when it was stolen at a party.

R2, I’m sorry that someone stole your book, but that did crack me up. Which devious queen was at your house and pilfered your Mercedes book? I know it wasn’t a straight person.

Thanks for sharing this OP, i will listen. I always felt she may have been cursed after her work on The Exorcist. Call me crazy but I saw that movie young and it really fucked me up, her voice in particular. The lengths she went to to achieve it were also wild. She broke her sobriety, among other things.

Crazy as she might have been, she was an extraordinary actress. Imagine—her Sadie Burke was her film debut. And then a film career as varied as Johnny Unitarian, Giant, and Touch of Evil! She and Agnes Moorehead the richest voices for radio drama. Would have loved to have seen her onstage, either in Virginia Woolf or Agnes of God or even Lost in Yonkers.

One of few actors I will watch in anything. The menacing, dark, pure conviction in her performance as Emma Small in Johnny Guitar is amazing to watch. McCambridge seethes and growls at Joan’s character. I remember a column in Movieline titled Bad Movies We Love that called out all the lurid high camp of Johnny Guitar. It’s so good.

Oh dear, r6.

R6 I saw her perform in Lost in Yonkers and I remember she was great but seemed frail. They blocked her movement out cleverly and used light and sound to sort of amplify her performance. In one emotional scene she held a cane up over her head, and I think they flashed the lights and played a rumbling sound like thunder or Sensurround in the movie Earthquake.

I feel for you R2. My neighbor stole my Tina Turner wall clock.

She was cast in All The King’s Men because she broke the fourth wall during her audition, locked eyes with the director, and said “You don’t want me…because I ain’t pretty”. They cast her based on that gesture and frankness.

OP, your mother sucks cocks in hell.

In the film Lightning Strikes Twice, her big scene involves admitting to a murder. She admits to Darryl Hickman’s character “Yes! Yes I killed here! She was ROTTEN!”.
McCambridge was so gifted in the way she used her face and voice and posture to show characters straining to contain rage and madness. It’s really cool watching her navigate that boundary.

I told the director to order that woman to stop STARING at me while I was disparaging her acting abilities with the crew!

Yes! That nasty queen's initials are PD and he kidnapped that book and a few CDs to Vancouver. Now he's an ugly fat old pig. And I still have a full head of hair and weigh 185.
Every time those left of our old gang (i think we're down to 4) get together we talk about the stuff PD stole from everyone. He was fired from Blockbuster for stealing inventory. And Blockbuster hired him after he was convicted of stealing from a record store.
And I and then late partner had even removed other valuables from the apartment in anticipation of his tendencies. I never thought he'd go after books and I was probably too wasted on weed and booze to notice the full shopping bag he left with. I was told later. PD was my late partner's friend.
