Three Dog Night had eighteen Top-20 hits in the US. I thought they just had JOY TO THE WORLD (which I love)

I mentioned to somebody at work that they were a one hit wonder. I was very surprised that they were as popular as they were.

I’ve heard AN OLD FASHIONED LOVE SONG (which I hate) but I didn’t know that was them.

In looking through their singles on Wikipedia, I don’t think I’ve heard any of their other songs

Very popular group until they all became serious dope fiends.

OP, how can you forget this banger?

Oh wow, I never realized all those songs were them. I knew a few of them.

JEREMIAH WAS A BULLFROG!

They are one of those bands where you've probably heard their hits, but didn't realize it was them. Partly because they had 3 lead singers

Their biggest song - One

Thank you, R5. What a great way to start the day!

"Black and White" was my all-time favorite at age 6.

They were a great group and produced some wonderful songs during the 70's. Here's one of my favorites 'Out In The Country' - it sounds contemporary today after all the decades that have passed since it came out.

I listened to my dad's 3DN records growing up. I loved their cover of Elton's "Your Song."

I've always loved Three Dog Night. Totally under-rated group that belongs in the HOF.

Have you heard their cover of "Try a Little Tenderness"? Cory Wells brought the soul to the group.

One and Eli's Comin' both written by wildly talented artists (Nilsson and Laura Nyro) but 3DN had bigger hits with them.

My favorite- Easy To Be Hard

They had great ears and could find great undiscovered songs from other artists. Just found that Dave Loggins of Please Come to Boston fame wrote their hit Pieces Of April.

Probably their only hit where the 3 leads each sang a verse - Family of Man

They had so many great hits -and are largely forgotten today -or at least ignored. What a shame. These songs defined an era!

Do the fishes in the deep blue sea actually feel joy?

[quote]OP, how can you forget this banger? Mama Told Me (Not to Come)

By Randy Newman, on his “12 Songs” album, written for Eric Burden.

by Anonymousreply 18May 30, 2025 10:36 PM

I remember a lot of these songs from radio in the 70s. Fabulous music.

by Anonymousreply 19May 30, 2025 11:00 PM

Not to distract from Three Dog Night's musical accomplishments but America, Blood Sweat & Tears, and Chicago were considered top groups of the time (70's) as well. I was in my 20's then and hearing some of the songs from the noted groups takes me back to my youth and how good things 'seemed' to be at the time. The 60's through the 80's (and a bit later) were a wonderful time for music.

Didn't they pose naked?

by Anonymousreply 21May 30, 2025 11:14 PM

Old Fashioned Love Song might be one of those you had to be there type records. Especially when they break into the 1920s crooner style at the end.

I love Till the World Ends, which I believe was one of their final hits.

Jeremiah was NOT a bull dyke.

by Anonymousreply 24May 30, 2025 11:46 PM

They were basically three vocalists who hired some back-up musicians and became a 'band'. Pretty clever.

Negron (cousin to dead gay actor Taylor Negron) was once groomed to be a teenybopper crooner, as "Chuck Rondell".

If it was that easy, everyone would do that. But they were three vocalists who had excellent taste in songs that could be hits. History shows that's very difficult to replicate, even for them.

Without the drug addictions, they could have had more hits for a few more years. Though they probably would have had problems navigating the disco era.

by Anonymousreply 26May 31, 2025 1:23 AM

OP’s dad didn’t have the 8-track.

by Anonymousreply 27May 31, 2025 2:20 AM

I love them because my Dad loved them. Old Fashioned Love Song is one of the songs of my childhood.

by Anonymousreply 28May 31, 2025 2:51 AM

I loved them and still love them. I have their greatest hits downloaded on Spotify.

by Anonymousreply 29May 31, 2025 3:08 AM

Their East To Be Hard is one of the best songs I have ever heard.

by Anonymousreply 30May 31, 2025 3:33 AM

Great thread. Like many here, I had not realized their huge impact. I set up a Three Dog Night Radio Station on Spotify. Thanks OP

R21 You're probably thinking of the original cover for their album, "It Ain't Easy," where the band was shown lounging in the buff. This cover was quickly withdrawn and replaced and is considered something of a collector's item today. Seems almost quaint now.

Looks like they kept touring after the hits stopped - even a lip sych 80s Solid Gold appearance - Liar
