Sacre Bleu! France Bans Outdoor Smoking
France will ban smoking in all outdoor places that can be frequented by children, health and family minister Catherine Vautrin has said.
The ban will come into force on 1 July and will include beaches, parks, public gardens, outside schools, bus stops and sports venues.

Those old black and white existential French films where nothing happens and they don't do anything but smoke make it seem like the coolest most glamourous thing in the world much more so than American films which also had plenty of smoking. You smoked and brooded about the pointlessness of it all.

Smoking looked cool and I did it as well, but these cancers are out of control. So until we have a functional cure for lung cancer that takes at most a day at the hospital to administer, smoking bans it is.

R8 Smoking is disgusting, no doubt, but the rising cases of cancer are not from cigarette smoking, which is at an all-time historical low. It's from all the toxic processed foods, hormones, and microplastics we're putting in our bodies.

r9 Yes, if someone is standing next to you and you get enveloped by a cloud of vape fog, it can make you choke up. Happened to me several times and has nothing to do with "precious senses", assface. I'm a former smoker, too.
Last week, a kid on a packed bus right in front of me was secretly inhaling small hits from his vape pen, and the sugary stench almost made me vomit because of the heat outside. And there was a mother with a newborn in a stroller right next to us as well. He couldn't wait ten minutes to get off that bus to vape, it's clearly even more addictive than regular smoking.

Can we ban old lady perfumes as well?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 29, 2025 7:19 PM

R10 Ok, on a crowded bus with infants is a different story. We were talking about outdoors.
Vapes have no second hand smoke--it's literally just water vapor. And it either smells like nothing or something relatively inoffensive like cherry cola or donuts or whatever, which is no more of an odor violation than walking past someone with heavy cologne or stinkt perfume. I for one am massively grateful for the mass transition to vapes because it means I don't have to be surrounded by noxious plumes of cigarette smoke wherever I go, which does actually effect me and my health. Someone smoking a vape effects me no more than if they were chewing nicorette gum--which is to say, not at all. I don't care if it's addictive to them, it doesn't effect me, and it's monumentally better for one's health than cigarettes.

r13, your hatred of vape smells is a matter of personal taste and not on the same level as second-hand cigarette smoke. You shouldn't expect other people to change just to make you more comfortable. All you can do is remove yourself from the situation.
The fact that you had to bring up the example of a teenager hot-boxing a bus with a flavored vape shows that you have no real argument. The vast majority of people wouldn't do something this inconsiderate.

R12 I did say in those films nothing happens. But it to me it does look cool and I want to grab a cigarette. But I do find the actual act of smoking one disgusting as well as just breathing in the smoke. And I grew up in a home where I was enveloped very young in second hand Kent smoke which I was used to until the Dr told my father he was going to die from it and he stopped immediately. My siblings and I none of us ever smokers could possibly die of lung cancer.

I don’t know about France, but when recently booking hotel rooms in Japan I was surprised to find that they still offer smoking rooms. I don’t think I’ve seen that in the US since the 90s (when I used to want to smoke inside). The second hand smoke from the Gaulois, a popular French cigarette brand, is like sucking the tailpipe of a diesel engine. The users don't seem to notice. Only relevant indirectly since there have been all the comments about vapes, I’m currently trying to quit smoking and tried a vape as an interim grading down, and found the vape much more harsh in terms of coughing etc., and developed the worst chest infection I’ve had in years, whether thats related to cutting down on cigarettes or using the vape of course up for debate. A friend of mine suggested I try zyns for a few weeks and wow are they a great solution. No tobacco at all, and I haven’t had mood swings or intense cravings. Stings a little on the gums, and bad taste in your mouth for a few minutes but very low level. Ive gone 1+ year in the past of not smoking before so I can definitely do it, it’s just a matter of getting through the first three weeks. Wish me luck!

R51 In the few weeks after I quit smoking, I too had worse shit coming out of my lungs than I ever did while actively smoking a pack a day, and that was without any vaping. I would wake up in the morning hacking so hard I was afraid I would pull something. I also immediately got some weird upper respitory thing that felt like it took months to subside. Apparently it's because your body is attempting to clear everything out of your lungs rapidly that it hasn't had the ability to in years. NAC helps tremendously to speed the process up.
Good on you for quitting!

R51 You won't quit smoking because you're trying to quit smoking. Trying always fails. You have to make the decision right now, that you will never touch another cigarette again. My godmother smoked for 30 years and gave it up just like that as soon as she was diagnosed with mild emphysema. Her father had died from it and it terrified her so she stopped immediately, not gradually and without any help. Her emphysema disappeared and she never smoked again. She's 83 now and quit 25 years ago. Her husband "tried" to stop smoking many times but couldn't and so he died from lung cancer.

r38 you've reminded me of when I was working in Bucharest back in 2017- they had enforced a no outdoor smoking ban a year and a half before, much to great protestation. My co-worker had broken his iphone screen and we found a place to replace it, in what seemed like an apartment building, and when we opened the door, 50 years of baked-in nicotine oozed out. You could see the nicotine stained walls. I had to go outside, the stench was so foul.
A few weeks later, a saw a mother carrying her newborn, with a cig in her mouth.

I was in Mostar, Bosnia-Hercegovina recently - the first time in my life when I felt sick from secondhand smoke. Every building stinks of it. Even the shopping mall. There was an old man who would smoke in the stairwell of the apartment building where I stayed...every time I went out he was standing there.
France is nowhere near that bad - sure, they smoke on cafe terraces and waiting for the train, but inside public buildings it's been banned for quite awhile.

R73 it’s kind of like the new trans forward Pride flag. Some gay men get sick just looking at it. Even if it does not directly and personally impact them. It’s the idea of something they can’t stomach,
This is what happens when a small sub-group of our population becomes hated and smokers have become hated by the majority. At one time smokers as most TMC viewers know were once very popular. Now treated like lepers.
At one time, not exactly unlike Pride, there were pro smoking events and parades, now smokers are a despised minority. It’s less the second hand smoke than the smoker.

And here is the issue for the next gay male STD related outbreaks.
Smokers were not demonized because of the Bible or that people did not like them or had anything to do with smell or stink, it all had to do with how much disease and $$$ lost to disease and preventing disease smokers cost the rest of society..
Once the risk and cost was accepted by lots of articles and news stories the no smoking areas, the fines, the taxes, the refusal to hire, the public scorn , the PSAs, all of that then followed . And shortly after a steady and significant decline in what is a true hardcore addiction.
It’s an unpleasant model that works.

What kind of twisted logic is that? Some gay me, actually many, maybe the majority are not happy with the "progress flag" because it shits all over the original flag and what it stood for. EVERYONE was covered under the rainbow, not just gay men. Adding your own stink to it by including race and gender identity are totally different things. On top of that, it's a money grab as the inventor has a copyright on it for commercial use. The Graphic Designer Gilbert Baker (at the request of Harvey Milk) who designed the original pride flag could have do so himself but instead he chose to make it a gift to the community, not a way to make a buck off it.
So yes it does impact many personally as it's a re-write and money grab of what was once a beautiful gift to the community.
