Jenna Ortega is unhappy with 'Wednesday' fame and struggles to be taken seriously.

The Scream actress, 22, discussed her complicated feelings toward the fame that has come with her Netflix series in an interview with Harper's Bazaar.

"To be quite frank, after the show and trying to figure everything out, I was an unhappy person," Ortega said. "After the pressure, the attention — as somebody who's quite introverted, that was so intense and so scary."

Ortega's friend and The Gallerist costar, Natalie Portman, told the outlet that she's felt a sense of condescension due to her history as a child actor and her relatively short stature.

"We're both physically tiny, so people will often treat you like a child forever," Portman said. "I'm 43 now, and people kind of pat me on the head. I don't look like a child, but I often feel like I'm treated like a kid."

Ortega agreed with Portman's sentiments: "I relate to that so immensely, and it's always been really annoying, because you just don't feel like you're being taken seriously. You know, it's like how you're dressed in the schoolgirl costume. ... There's just something about it that's very patronizing. Also, when you're short, people are already physically looking down on you."

The actress noted that her character's age and context in a boarding school makes people assume she's younger than she actually is. I'm doing a show I'm going to be doing for years where I play a schoolgirl," Ortega said. "But I'm also a young woman."

The X star said that she thinks young men have more latitude from the public when they transition from teen stardom to grown-up performances.

"But girls... if they don't stay as this perfect image of how they were first introduced to you, then it's 'Ah, something's wrong. She's changed. She sold her soul.' But you're watching these women at the most pivotal times in their lives; they're experimenting because that's what you do," she said. Ortega also explained that her age makes people assume an inaccurate sense of nativity.

It really irks me when people say, 'Oh, you don't understand. You're so young,'" she said. "Because if you're not open to the experiences that you're having and you're not willing to learn from your mistakes or reflect on your decisions, you're not going to grow at all. You're choosing to be a bystander."

Ortega also noted, however, that her experience has improved on Wednesday season 2, on which she also serves as a producer.

"I sit in on meetings and listen and learn," she explained. "I'm still finding my footing in that area."

Such problems. She'll be completely obscure soon enough.

by Anonymousreply 1May 29, 2025 5:54 PM

My heart bleeds!

by Anonymousreply 2May 29, 2025 5:55 PM

Poor little girl, boo hoo.

by Anonymousreply 3May 29, 2025 5:57 PM

If you don't want the roles, there are other young actresses that would love to have those jobs. Like me.

by Anonymousreply 4May 29, 2025 5:59 PM

Maybe she can just rewrite all her scripts again.

by Anonymousreply 5May 29, 2025 6:00 PM

She's a whiner but it's true about physically small people, they really aren't taken seriously, especially small women.

They are considered sexually appealing though, unlike small men. So it's unfortunate for both small men and women for different reasons.

by Anonymousreply 6May 29, 2025 6:02 PM

She needs to start producing her own projects that showcase her versatility.

But I hope she capitalizes on her smart bad girl image.

She is Annette Benning.

by Anonymousreply 7May 29, 2025 6:03 PM

[quote]unlike small men

Sorry?

Elliott Page is one of the most desired men in the world and he is 4 ft 8.

by Anonymousreply 8May 29, 2025 6:03 PM

Of the thousands of actresses who were rejected for this role, she really needs a lesson in appreciation. She's attractive - but let's not go too far.

She plays a character with limited emotion and with stone faced expressions. Not exactly a reach or a massive display of talent required.

There are tons of short actresses - the majority are not tall for good reason - it's hard to shoot them with other actors (male and female).

Shut up - listen, learn and be humble.

by Anonymousreply 9May 29, 2025 6:15 PM

She needs to shut her trap and be grateful for what she's already gotten. Strive for more, certainly, but you sound like a fucking whiner going on about her " 'Wednesday' fame" and how she isn't being taken seriously, blahhdy blah blah BLAH.

Shaddup.

I'm available to step into the dewy ingenue role! I mean, I'm playing Wednesday's mother but I don't look a day older!

by Anonymousreply 11May 29, 2025 6:19 PM

She's so whiny! UGH.

by Anonymousreply 12May 29, 2025 6:21 PM

Just neverending drama with her and Zegler. But, execs see all this and people talk, so they'll get their just desserts soon enough.

by Anonymousreply 13May 29, 2025 6:26 PM

No shit you're a early 20s Netflix actress famous for a cheesy show targeted at teen girls. Could be worse Millie Bobby Brown is never going to escape being a bald pre-teen.

by Anonymousreply 14May 29, 2025 6:38 PM

“To be frank,” WEDNESDAY, a huge ratings-getter for Netflix and her main claim to fame, was grossly overrated. While the first four episodes were fun, the back half was a retread of “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” (a previous highly rated Netflix series) and she should be thanking her lucky stars she got this derivative gig.

She’s nothing special, and unless the new season of WEDNESDAY is smartly written and directed, the ratings aren’t apt to be as good this time.

by Anonymousreply 15May 29, 2025 6:53 PM

Her movie career flopped. Wednesday is the peak of her career, so she shouldn't take it for granted.

by Anonymousreply 16May 29, 2025 6:56 PM

No mention of her starring role in Taika Waititi's latest shelf-sitter "Klara and the Sun."

by Anonymousreply 17May 29, 2025 7:57 PM

I condole her

by Anonymousreply 18May 29, 2025 8:02 PM

"I relate to that so immensely."

GTFO.

by Anonymousreply 19May 29, 2025 8:31 PM

TGIF

by Anonymousreply 20May 29, 2025 9:20 PM

You bitches are so mean sometimes. Pressers like this are commonplace, and what she’s says is entirely understandable given she just came off a very successful show.

Ortega comes across (to me at least) as both intelligent and talented enough that she could have a good run at a longer career still ahead of her. And she’s absolutely right about the gap period of transitioning into more mature roles and how it can be a rocky period.

She was merely recounting this, and a lot of you petty bitches are clutching your caftans as if she was some complaining ingrate. No, it was a mere interview, the kind actors do all the time, where they get to express where they’re at.

God some of you are so predictable.

by Anonymousreply 21May 29, 2025 10:18 PM

I don't have a kaftan in my closet. I do have a bone to pick with privileged people who complain, which is all she is doing in this interview. No one wants to hear this right now, which she obviously hasn't figured out. Maybe you do. Your prerogative.

by Anonymousreply 22May 29, 2025 10:25 PM

You're a woman in your twenties who makes a living playing Burtonesque underage cutiepies. I'm not surprised that creeps you out. It creeps ME out.

by Anonymousreply 23May 29, 2025 10:50 PM

Wednesday’s actress is full of woe.

by Anonymousreply 24May 29, 2025 10:52 PM

The show was shit. I can understand being ashamed

by Anonymousreply 25May 29, 2025 10:59 PM

Piece of shit movie that TRIES WA-AAAAAY TOO HARD. UNWATCHABLE. Stunningly pointless!

by Anonymousreply 26May 29, 2025 11:02 PM

Beetlejuice 2 is also unwatchable

by Anonymousreply 27May 30, 2025 12:07 AM

Completely agree, r27. I started watching it a couple of weeks ago with a friend whose house I was staying at, and even with my computer on doing other stuff (like checking out the DL posts!), it was seriously boring and - as you said - unwatchable. At one point, they started talking in Spanish for a few minutes and I thought somehow the dubbing got changed to Spanish language (my friend was not used to watching it on this particular streaming venue), then it switched back to English at the next scene. WTF? What was the point of that?

I stopped watching after about 1/2 hour - 45 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 28May 30, 2025 12:36 AM

Is it me or are Latina actresses, or at least those with Latin sounding names completely insufferable?

by Anonymousreply 29May 30, 2025 1:06 AM

I got through about 4 episodes and that was enough. Why did they make the character smug, humorless and infallible? How boring.

by Anonymousreply 30May 30, 2025 1:11 AM

Ya wanna talk Gidget and Sister Bertrille, Jenna?

by Anonymousreply 31May 30, 2025 1:22 AM

I was molested on Wednesday.

by Anonymousreply 32May 30, 2025 1:26 AM

Another Rachel Zegler.

by Anonymousreply 33May 30, 2025 1:29 AM

Jenna Van Oy feels your pain

by Anonymousreply 34May 30, 2025 2:11 AM

Correction:

"Jenna Van Oy feels many dicks"

by Anonymousreply 35May 30, 2025 2:13 AM

Her face bugs.

by Anonymousreply 36May 30, 2025 9:40 AM

Fuck this obnoxious little whore.

by Anonymousreply 37May 30, 2025 11:51 AM

R37=Winona Ryder

by Anonymousreply 38May 30, 2025 2:53 PM

She looks like shit on the non-Wednesday photo at OP. Why is her generation aging like milk?

by Anonymousreply 39May 30, 2025 5:25 PM

The hypersexual maneater look does not suit little Jenna.
