Celebrity actor Miriam Margolyes claims she will die soon.

She's more famous for being deliberately controversial than she is any of her acting roles so in the same spirit as Miriam I hope the vile old bitch experiences a lot of pain in what little time she has left.

It remains amusing that she is billed as "Harry Potter star" when she had a tiny role in just one of the films. Not "BAFTA winning actress" or "Call The Midwife star".

Patti LuPone is deliberately controversial but at least she has the resume to back up her fame.

Who dis woman?

by Anonymousreply 1May 27, 2025 2:23 PM

She's 84 and she says in the article she will likely die "in the next five or six years". So, she studied Probability at school?

by Anonymousreply 2May 27, 2025 2:28 PM

She’s much better known in the UK//hardly the bot player you make her out to be. She strikes me as a harmless crank—whereas Patti is growing more bitter and vicious as she ages (and I say that as someone who has enjoyed over years, in The Old Neighborhood, Gypsy, Passion,, Night Music, and in concert, the last three at Ravinia

by Anonymousreply 3May 27, 2025 2:30 PM

I like her. She's a bit of fun. Yes she's deliberately controversial, but she's not usually nasty or mean-spirited.

I saw a recent documentary where she went to Australia and she was quite direct with some of her questioning. At first I thought "why on earth did she ask that?!" but then I thought it was a good thing because she got some honesty in return and it was more interesting as a result. If she'd stuck to safe and polite questions, she wouldn't have got the same depth out of those she was with.

Also it's not her fault others describe her as a Harry Potter star. She admits herself that many people only know her from the Harry Potter films and that she doesn't mind it because she enjoyed her time in said movies. She's been in a lot more things, though. Never really a leading lady, but she's starred in plenty of roles over the years (especially in theatre). Enough to be quite wealthy which, again, she's admitted to being.

I read Miriam’s books and find her amusing. When she’s good shes great and when she’s mean she’s awful. One nice memory is of her sitting on her stoop during Covid and talking with passersby.

Her career has been wildly uneven. She started out in radio at the BBC and did well in voice over. The BBC would throw her the odd documentary, but seem to have kept her at arms length. She is great at speaking to people about aging or death —delicate stuff. She makes no secret that Joanna Lumley gets the better gigs and is easier to look at. I think the main reason though is she doesn’t have much grace when challenged. She seems like a nightmare to deal with at times.

I can’t remember the name of the movie, but she’s in that Seth Rogen/Barbra Streisand movie as one of four Yentas who are friends with Babs. She doesn’t even have a speaking line.

She lives well with her lesbian partner and obviously doesn’t view much as being beneath her. The cameos and the second book that is a collection of stories not good enough to make it into the first are proof of that.

The series she did with Alan Cumming where they traveled around the US in an RV was fun.

by Anonymousreply 6May 27, 2025 3:36 PM

"she had a tiny role in just one of the films"

Actually, she was in both Chamber of Secrets and Deathly Hallows Part II.

by Anonymousreply 7May 27, 2025 3:41 PM

R4 - I'm pretty sure she has lived in Australia for years and may be an Australian citizen by now - her lesbian partner is Australian.

She is shocking and amusing - but she also comes off as being a bit hard-headed and would be difficult to be around or work with.

Predicting you're going to die in the next 5 years when you're 84 isn't a difficult thing to do.

She won a BAFTA for playing Mrs. Manson Mingott in "The Age of Innocence," and literally complained for decades that Winona Ryder was nominated for an Oscar for the same film and she was not.

She loves being outrageous and talking about farting.

by Anonymousreply 9May 27, 2025 3:47 PM

She’s on Graham Norton a lot.

His (edited) old shows are streaming on Roku and worth watching.

She’s certainly witnessed a number of near death experiences all around her - after subjecting everyone to her noxious farts.

by Anonymousreply 13May 27, 2025 4:14 PM

R12 YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 14May 27, 2025 4:18 PM

She kicked Arnie's ass in End of Days. She was in the Miss Fisher mysteries out of Australia. She's quite funny on Norton. She's got a tremendous life force. More power to her.

by Anonymousreply 15May 27, 2025 4:28 PM

I saw her on stage in The Killing of Sister George, a part you'd have thought was made for her, but she was very low energy and soft-focus.

by Anonymousreply 16May 27, 2025 5:08 PM

OP she had a role in 2 HP films.

by Anonymousreply 17May 27, 2025 5:11 PM

R16 I wished I’d gotten to see that. Sister George is a perfect fit for her.

She mentions it in her book and says it fell apart in rehearsal because Josephine Tewson was difficult and at the time was coming off of Keeping up Appearances. She didn’t want to alienate her fans by playing a predatory lez.

by Anonymousreply 18May 27, 2025 5:32 PM

R8, yes she even has Australian citizenship. Her partner is Australian but being an Indonesian historian has always needed access to Dutch East Indian archives in the Netherlands. They have lived apart for long stretches of time since 1968.

She has a lovely home in London and a place in Italy. The home in Australia is very picturesque and is actually where one of her films (Babe) was filmed. Last I heard her talk about it she said it was on air bnb.

I fell way down a rabbit hole with her last year.

by Anonymousreply 19May 27, 2025 5:43 PM

She did an audio “porn” tape in the 1960’s called “Sexy Sonia”.

To my knowledge it’s never surfaced.

Is that you, Maureen Lipman?

by Anonymousreply 21May 27, 2025 5:51 PM

FYI Heart surgery can and often does precipitate severe depression. Post-op debility? Concern about complications? An intimation of mortality?

Perhaps it contributes to her stunning prediction.

by Anonymousreply 22May 27, 2025 6:04 PM

Her most famous role in the UK was that of the Cadbury's Caramel bunny.

by Anonymousreply 23May 27, 2025 6:08 PM

Controversial? The UK is full of pussies.

by Anonymousreply 24May 27, 2025 6:21 PM

Right, r22. She’s already been using a wheelchair for about a year now. I can imagine this has been hard for her.

I think it’s very generous of her to say she would like to be friends with Lipman again if she stops being a Zionist. Maureen will talk and talk about being a Jew, but if you ask her about it she turns sour and says, “I doubt you’d ask Judi Dench about being a Quaker!” She seems…not nice.

Miriam tells the story about giving a blowjob to an American soldier.

She is amusing and has few filters - deliberately, i think, she got a renaissance out of being outspoken and shocking. But she is clever and funny, and says interesting things too. She tells stories about other actors most dont dare. I particularly like her imitation of Maggie Smith refusing an ala in their high school or something. It wasn’t anything very bad, but her imitation was very funny.

Her beef wit Winona Ryder wasn’t a criticism to the acting. She felts Winona being nominated for supporting was category fraud and should have been for best actress instead, thus preventing Miriam being nominated .

by Anonymousreply 27May 27, 2025 10:53 PM

I remember her from playing Aunt Sponge in James and the Giant Peach.

She can be tedious when she is attention-seeking (which is most of the time), but in the rare interview where she is simply herself she comes across as a warm,. humane, and intelligent person.

In the same spirit as your idiot's logic and plain meanness of spirit, as well as your missing the point of what Miriam actually has been about all this time, please take your hope as mine, you cunt, for you.

Here are two of Miriam’s beautiful properties. She also has a really nice house in London, and she also owns a flat next door that she rents out.

You can stay at the Gun Emplacement at reasonable rates. Pretty views.

"Sorry the property is not suitable for children due to the proximity of the cliff edge, but fine for older people (two small steps) and for well-behaved pets. Due to the layout of the property it is not really suited to wheel chairs. NO SMOKERS."

Funny, & a good actress, but, a little of her goes a long way.

by Anonymousreply 35May 28, 2025 6:05 PM

She used to be on a show called “A Kick Up the Eighties” with Tracey Ullman and a bunch of other up-and-comers.

She’s already 84. Five to six years is NOT DYING SOON for anyone let alone an obese 84 year old hag with health problems. 89 to 90 is NOT dying young

by Anonymousreply 38May 28, 2025 9:00 PM

R38 = Tracy-Ann Oberman.

by Anonymousreply 39July 11, 2025 2:17 AM

R33, is that woman in the ad Miriam Margolyes? I can’t believe that.

by Anonymousreply 40July 11, 2025 2:41 AM

I had a visceral negative reaction to her in The Age of Innocence (the first time I ever saw her). I don't even know why. I had to change seats several times because I thought the view might not be so disturbing from another angle.

by Anonymousreply 41July 11, 2025 3:09 AM

^^^"Mary!" of the month winner.

by Anonymousreply 42July 11, 2025 3:28 AM

r40 yeah that's not her. On YouTube it's says '70s model Carole Augustine' (who?)
