Holy shit R6 — it’s one thing to say you simply don’t like Queen’s music, but to state that the frontman of one of the biggest, highest-grossing rock acts is “not interesting”… Bit of a stretch.

Freddie was bi. Fact.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 23, 2025 10:53 PM |
Freddie has been debated on here and was mostly thought of as gay, although it was always stated that he was bi in more official accounts. So it seems this is another point in favor of bi.

R16 apparently there was a separate agreement, outside of Freddie’s will, that provided for her. And her stepfather left her with a great fortune, too.

You can't pick and choose who you want on your team. If Freddie had at elast 2 known relationships with women, he seems pretty bi.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 24, 2025 9:33 AM |
He wouldn’t be the first gay man to dabble with women before deciding it wasn’t for him. Hell, some have 30-year marriage with grown-up children before they finally come out in their 50s!
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 24, 2025 9:38 AM |
For a bi guy, his interest in women seemed pretty minimal. 45 years on earth and he only had sex with two women that we know of. I think it's far more likely that he was a gay guy who dabbled in straight sex.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 24, 2025 9:45 AM |
It’s hard to say whether Freddie was gay or bi, but I lean toward gay because he really loved that woman he was engaged to on a platonic level; if they were sexually compatible I think they’d have stayed together.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 24, 2025 10:38 AM |
So... let me get this sorted. A man who had sex with several women, you still think is gay. While people with no gay relationships, only innuendo/looks/uncertain rumors, are fantasized as gay on here as well. Got it.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 24, 2025 10:39 AM |
"While Freddie Mercury and Mary Austin had a close and enduring relationship, they were not sexually intimate. They were romantically involved and even briefly engaged, but after Mercury came to terms with his sexuality, their relationship evolved into a deep platonic love and friendship, according to Wikipedia and the London Evening Standard. They remained best friends until his death".
Austin says “Being a bit naïve, it had taken me a while to realise the truth. Afterward, he felt good about having finally told me he was bisexual. Although I do remember saying to him at the time, ‘No Freddie, I don’t think you are bisexual. I think you are gay.’”
He was gay. Even Mary Austin knew he was gay.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 24, 2025 11:44 AM |
Not to dispute what she is saying. But I think it's easier for a woman to think he's gay than he's bi and just not that into her sexually.

by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 24, 2025 12:08 PM |
R29 well there was the complicating factor that his family was very conservative — they were Zoroastrians, a very homophobic religion. He never really talked publicly about his sexuality at all. All we have is second hand statements from his friends and lovers.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 24, 2025 12:12 PM |
According to R25 Mary Astin's own story has Freddie claiming he is bi. It seems her reframing him as gay only serves to point out how much better she is at determining someone else's sexuality. She makes herself out to be the definite source about that, which is highly unlikely.

According to the Daily Mail article, this woman claims Freddie was in very close, daily contact with her from infancy and he even had rooms in her family's various houses, which she grew up in along with her mother and the mother's husband (no mention of siblings). She was supposedly the product of an affair between Freddie and the wife of a good friend of his and they all remained great buddies. His family and close friends and maybe the band too knew about her. I find this all very hard to believe.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | May 24, 2025 3:29 PM |
She's lying of course. She's a head case that has fabricated all of this stuff for years.
What would be the point of staying anonymous?
Why did she not get ANYTHING in the will - which she would have had the right to contest?
She's a psycho.
And I'm tired of this bi talk. I guess every man who has ever been with a woman - including married to a woman - who later came out as gay is not in fact gay - but bisexual.
It's called a progression of acceptance and both internal and external homophobia. He certainly wasn't with any women after the age of 30.
It's also not like he didn't have chances - he was very promiscuous - in the 70s, groupies threw themselves at rock stars. But he only slept with men. This is a gay man who couldn't come out or was confused with so little info about gay life available at the time.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 24, 2025 3:40 PM |
First or all: Can the “Freddie was bi!!!!”-troll go fuck herself? The man was gayer than a peacock on a cruise ship, and he was a fabulous gay, at that.
Second: Watch for Brian May in the coming weeks, he still answers questions about FM from time to time.
Maybe “Phoebe”, Peter Freestone, who was Freddie’s personal assistant, may shed some light now that the cat is -allegedly- out of the bag. He’s only 70, so still a very reliable source.
If NOBODY speaks out, this could sadly mean two things: It’s true, or (worse), they’re all being very British about it and just clamp up.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 24, 2025 4:30 PM |
I'm calling shenanigans. For one thing the source of this article is the tabloid Daily Mail. which is a National Enquirer-level sus publication. Second, why would someone committed to maintaining her anonymity PUBLISH A MEMOIR? Third, although it's quite possible for a gay man in a highly promiscuous time and place with all sorts of mind altering recreational drugs available to somehow ejaculate in or near a woman's nethers, just apply Ockham's razor to the jolly affair accepted by the whole family to the extent that Freddie was given his own room in their house, the secret journals and daily visits and generous inheritance not included in the will.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | May 24, 2025 5:32 PM |
This could be one of those cases where her mom is lying and told her that her dad is 'famous'. But keep it on the DL because it's just between us.
Reality is - the mom doesn't know who the father is or doesn't like the father. So a little lie to boost the kid's self-esteem and evades the 'where's my daddy?' question becomes a life-long farce.
She's either psycho or a victim of her mother's lies. Or both.

by Anonymous | reply 48 | May 24, 2025 5:44 PM |
R46, the Daily Mail didn't come up with this story (didn't you read your own link?) and the "daughter" hasn't written a memoir. The claims about this woman are made in a new biography of Freddie by Lesley-Ann Jones. Apparently the "secret daughter" approached her, as she'd previously written a biography of him.
R47, the "daughter" claims that she had a close relationship with Freddie as she was growing up and he acknowledged her as his daughter. She also claims that he gave her his secret journals, which he apparently started writing a few days before she was born and continued to write for the next 15 years till his death and in which he recounted various events from his life.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 24, 2025 7:13 PM |
Remember the woman who claimed to be Anastasia of Russian royalty? Not until DNA long after her death, did they prove she was a fake,
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 24, 2025 10:58 PM |
[quote]“No one could have faked all this. Why would she have worked with me for three and a half years, never demanding anything?”
That's the last line from the OP's linked Guardian article and is from the author of the book who sounds as clueless as the fake daughter. Unbelievable that the author is asking why she would have done it! But DNA and authentication of the notebooks will prove if this is true or not.
Do we know if either thing has happened? There's nothing in the story about a DNA test or authentication of the diaries. Because it just sounds like a made up fan fantasy otherwise. This wouldn't be the first time an uberfan has gone over the edge and lived out their fantasy.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 24, 2025 11:10 PM |
That he left a cherished daughter out of the will is odd, but he may have set up a separate trust for her. Does the alleged daughter say whether Mary Austin knew about her? If the story is true, maybe he kept the daughter secret from her, the so-called "love of his life" to spare her feelings.
I don't know anything about Lesley-Ann Jones, but you'd think a biographer would do her research and and verify independently that the woman is related. She may not have asked for genetic samples (awkward), but there must be other ways to verify. Handwriting analysis? She's staking her professional reputation on those claims. In the very least, someone close to Freddie must have verified to get it into print, right?
And if we want to get super-conspiratorial, how do we know the Jones isn't the author of the "diaries?" 🤔 🧐
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 24, 2025 11:18 PM |
R52 Mary Austin would know, they were constantly up in each other’s business . Phoebe would have known, and most likely the rest of the band would be in the know. All the aforementioned are very much alive — it will be interesting to see if any of then will speak out.
Don’t count on Mary Austin, she keeps a very low profile.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 25, 2025 8:48 AM |
R52, the only thing we're told that Freddie left to the "daughter" is his journals. I'm pretty sure if he set up a trust fund or something similar for her that would have been mentioned, as it would be further "proof" that she was his daughter.
Apparently Mary Austin has been selling a lot of Freddie's stuff and his sister has been buying it back anonymously at auctions.
If there really were a blood daughter, Mary Austin would want this story silenced.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 25, 2025 9:00 AM |
[quote]“We had a very close and loving relationship from the moment I was born and throughout the final 15 years of his life".
Also R54 - if he maintained a relationship with his daughter as she claimed he did (above) then he would have left her money in his will.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | May 25, 2025 9:39 AM |
R55, supposedly the daughter had to be kept secret because the mother was married. But her husband totally accepted Freddie as the father and Freddie had rooms of his own in all the houses this family lived in so he could visit. So, if the woman's husband was accepting, then why did the child's true parentage have to be kept secret?
The alleged daughter also says that people will be shocked by the circumstances of her birth, but even back then who would have been shocked at the idea that a rock star got someone else's wife pregnant? Especially if the husband was ok with it?
Freddie Mercury's will was weird enough for giving half his estate to his ex-fiance and nothing to his male partner, who had tended for him. I know he was deeply closeted, but he was dying of AIDS so it wouldn't be that much of a shock to people that he had a male lover. I think a quarter went to his parents and the other quarter to his sister. If he really had a beloved daughter, then he would probably have left her or her mother something in his will too.

by Anonymous | reply 57 | May 25, 2025 11:38 AM |
Freddie wasn’t deeply closeted: People spotted him in Heaven and other London (and New York, Munich) gay bars all the time. He just never went on camera saying “I’m gay”.
Jim Hutton was bequeathed about 500.000 GBP (that’s about 1,2 million today) plus a fairly large plot of land in Hutton’s native Ireland.
He had known Mary his whole adult life, was godfather to her child — leaving her Garden Lodge (the house near Earl’s Court in London) made absolute sense.

Personally, I get so fatigued from hearing about how Freddie was bisexual and Mary Austin was the love of his life. She was his best friend and they had a physical relationship when he was young and deeply closeted - and when it was social suicide to be gay. She told HIM that he was gay.
I have a best friend of 40 years who is a woman - she's my right hand and has been there through thick and thin. We even slept together when we were teenagers. But I am gay and she is my best friend and I love her more than anyone else - but it doesn't make me bisexual.
It feels like they push the whole bisexual thing to make it more palatable for his legacy. Once he came out - it was only men - a lot of them. Feels like straight people (fans, historians, etc) tellinig his story - oh no, but he wasn't gay - he LOVED a woman, so he's actually bi, so he's kind of alright actually.
Back to topic though - there is absolutely no reason for this woman to keep this secret for 34 years after his death. Ridiculous on every level.

This is the alleged daughter. What exactly is she referring to here? If anything, there's been little distortion of who Freddie was or speculation about him (beyond whether he was gay or bi) because he was so private and he had people around him who work hard to protect his legacy.
[quote]'Their versions of Freddie are far removed from the man he really was. They have done this for their own profit and ego. Freddie would have been deeply wounded by it all.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | May 25, 2025 4:48 PM |
'She has stated that if anyone else tries to claim ownership of the diaries, she will burn them.' Of course - destroy the 'evidence'.
LAJ writes books about big celebrities and it's a mixed-bag of reviews.
I think it's very telling how the quotes from the supposed daughter effusively praises Leslie Ann-Jones and her writing and books.
It's also entirely possible LAJ made this woman up - since we will never get a chance to meet her, know her name, her connection or see first-hand any of the 'evidence'.
This whole "oh I want to remain private" is bullshit. Yes she would get some press for a little bit - but really, kids of famous people don't warrant that much attention unless they put themselves out there. Ain't nobody dying to get to Sean Lennon or Mick Jagger's kids.

by Anonymous | reply 75 | May 31, 2025 3:42 PM |
To be more accurate, in response to people demanding a DNA test, LAJ says that requisite verification was obtained and legal teams involved, but that could mean anything.
A DNA test could only have been done if members of Freddie's family provided their DNA. If this woman is indeed Freddie's daughter, then his sister could simply have confirmed that without a DNA test. I don't think Freddie's family would be giving their DNA in either case, if the woman was a fraud or if she was legitimate.
