Democrats have failed for decades to produce more than a handful of truly successful Hispanic lawmakers, and for reasons that elude me to this day, they've never tried fielding a Hispanic for a state-level role (either senator or governor, and weirdly so considering Ted Cruz is now in his third term). Speaking of which: Colin Allred was a stellar candidate, but he's mixed-race black-white – in a state that's over 40% Hispanic vs. 12% Black. (Texas now has fewer white people than Hispanics.)

Both Casar & Jasmine Crockett – his Black female counterpart repping a Dallas-area district, and both have similar politics – hopefully have bright futures ahead, once our current horrific state has ended.

Not to be a dick, r54, but gerrymandering has nothing to do with the US Senate - the races are statewide. It's hard to see Casar or Crockett winning that state anytime soon - they might be better off simply leapfrogging to the national stage, like when Mayor Pete realized he had no chance at statewide office in Indiana.

Frankly it's fascinating with the demographics of Texas that it's still so uncompetitive. Latinos in Texas and Florida seem to be gravitating to the GOP, which is seriously bad news. Florida may be explained to at least some extent by Cuban-Americans, but Texas is kind of a head-scratcher, considering that like California most Latinos there are of Mexican descent.

R51, seven years or so ago I'd have agreed with you, but since Goldman's been in Congress he has hit the wall-- HARD.

Dutch people would be quite amused to learn that some foreigners were lusting after 'their' Mark Rutte. In his early years as prime minister, there was some curiosity and speculation about his sexuality and romantic life, but by the end of his 14-year tenure (2010-2024), people were relieved to see the back of him. He has a LOT to answer for. As a leader, his positives were considered his work ethic, optimism, lack of pretention, and ability to get along with just about everyone. (The latter was also considered a negative by some, who viewed him as glib).

When asked what women he found attractive, he would always name the same two conventionally good-looking TV personalities/starlets/news anchors that he knew many straight men would cite. It seemed so unconvincing that people stopped asking him these questions after a while. There's some video out there where he's seen getting out of a black car with tinted windows, kissing the male driver and saying "Goodbye, honey." In general, there wasn't a lot of gossip about him (in line with the general Dutch respect for politicians' privacy) and he was known for his ostensibly simple, sober lifestyle. His hobbies were supposedly playing the piano and reading Thomas Mann. He talked about how he would chat on the phone to Angela Merkel while doing his Saturday-morning shopping.

His older brother was gay and died of AIDS in the 1980s. Rutte did a long live TV interview about a decade ago (on a show called "Zomergasten") in which he spoke about how deeply affected he was by this experience, but even then he still managed to sound businesslike and unscrutable. People concluded that there's either "nothing there" or he keeps it all very well hidden.
