It's shocking to me how far Janet fell. I guess it can be traced back to the Superbowl "wardrobe malfunction" escapade, but prior to that, if you consider the late 80s through very early 2000s, Janet's popularity basically rivaled Madonna's. I wouldn't say she was ever a "legend" like Madonna, a status that is comprised of more things than Billboard chart placements and record sales, but she was most definitely a superstar. She had a few less than stellar albums in the early/mid 2000s, which coupled with the Superbowl incident and subsequent backlash seemed to derail everything, but I still can't quite think of another major act that had such a sharp fall from the top. And she has never really recovered from it, whereas other artists who had periods of collapse (Mariah, post Glitter, for example) were able to rise again and recover at least some of the ground they had lost.

Exactly! Both are incredible dancers/live performers. I would even argue that they are, hands down, the very best when it comes to female pop/dance performance. They pioneered the style that every pop bitch has done since. They just have two different styles, with different backgrounds. Madonna is more classically trained, with a background in Modern, and a style that's more lyrical, narrative, and conceptually driven. But she can also do more structured and street-oriented stuff as seen in Vogue and Express Yourself. Janet is more regimented and structured, with an emphasis on footwork, speed, and big movements. Her background reflects that - growing up already within show business, and choosing choreographers that specialize more in street/popular styles.

Madonna will never get her props as a dancer and that really is a shame. The ultra-choreographed style popularized by Michael and Janet completely took over and it's all you see in music videos.
