What state is a great place to move to?

I want to leave the Texas triangle. It's hot, crowded, and I don't care about football.

What's a good state? I dream of Wisconsin, or Vermont, or Maine, Boston, anywhere it's not so hot like CA or FL.

by Anonymousreply 116June 15, 2025 10:08 PM

Oregon.

by Anonymousreply 1May 22, 2025 3:39 AM

Thanks R1, well that settles it.

by Anonymousreply 3May 22, 2025 5:02 AM

What’s the Texas Triangle?

by Anonymousreply 4May 22, 2025 5:18 AM

Nebraska

by Anonymousreply 5May 22, 2025 5:27 AM

Southern California is actually pretty mild if you live by the coast. It might get hot for a few weeks in late August, early September. But it's hardly ever humid.

by Anonymousreply 6May 22, 2025 6:22 AM

I hate to say it, but Indiana looks like a beautiful state.

by Anonymousreply 7May 22, 2025 7:03 AM

I took this quiz about 20 years ago, and 5 of my Top Spots were in Wisconsin and the Northwest. If I had to choose, I’d pick Colorado, former home of Mrs. Patsy Ramsey.

Just took the test and the result showed the city in which I have always lived. Guess I’m in the right place.

by Anonymousreply 9May 22, 2025 9:19 AM

Rhode Island

by Anonymousreply 10May 22, 2025 9:26 AM

Told me I should live in San Francisco. I kind of agree, but I left there a few years ago

by Anonymousreply 11May 22, 2025 9:30 AM

Mine told me Nutbush.

by Anonymousreply 12May 22, 2025 10:09 AM

Catatonic or vegetative should suit you well, OP.

by Anonymousreply 13May 22, 2025 1:46 PM

R4, the Texas Triangle is DFW, Austin/San Antonio, and Houston. Most of the population lives within the Triangle.

by Anonymousreply 14May 22, 2025 1:51 PM

Santa Monica. All my top 10 were California. Bottom 10 were all in Texas except two in Fllorida.

by Anonymousreply 15May 22, 2025 2:07 PM

According to that quiz my #1 was New York, where I lived after college and plan to return one day. I was surprised to see LA in my top five because I chose walkability or public transit on almost every question where it was listed.

by Anonymousreply 16May 22, 2025 2:08 PM

My rules: No snow, humidity, or excessive heat. Pretty much limits me to the west coast.

by Anonymousreply 17May 22, 2025 2:25 PM

I'd pick Rhode Island if I could, it looks so beautiful and peaceful. Almost like Canada. And their accent is just delightful.

by Anonymousreply 18May 22, 2025 2:47 PM

Naperville IL. I am not even sure I could find IL on the map.

by Anonymousreply 19May 22, 2025 2:47 PM

Mock if you will, but I’m actually liking New Jersey more than I expected to. It’s not quite as cold as the “real Northeast”, few weather extremes and usually ample rainfall; it’s a great place for gardening and outdoor recreation. People here are a mix of Jersey stereotypes, a ton of ethnic diversity (which begets superb restaurant options) and a large % of us Manhattan/Brooklyn transplants, i.e. professional backgrounds and at least a few brain cells. Tends to be generally friendly and gay-friendly as well compared to other places I’ve been.

by Anonymousreply 20May 22, 2025 2:55 PM

4 of my top 15 are places I’ve lived. My top two were SF and Oakland, which I left 30 years ago. At least I’m consistent 🤷🏻‍♂️

by Anonymousreply 21May 22, 2025 2:57 PM

OP, try Florida.

by Anonymousreply 22May 22, 2025 3:00 PM

One outside the U.S. states.

by Anonymousreply 23May 22, 2025 6:27 PM

Yucatán state

by Anonymousreply 24May 22, 2025 6:30 PM

New Jersey

by Anonymousreply 25May 22, 2025 6:31 PM

North Rhine-Westphalia

by Anonymousreply 26May 22, 2025 6:36 PM

My husband’s from Dallas and has loved Boston since he moved here. He says he’d go back to Texas more often but American won’t circle over DFW for an hour or two.

by Anonymousreply 27May 22, 2025 6:37 PM

If I had unlimited fundage and had to live in the US, it would be California for me for sure. I've ridden there twice (from FL) and flown there two other times (job related) and I have never felt so at home anywhere in my entire life.

Maybe Santa Cruz? Long Beach?

But I'm old and poor -- so whaddya gonna do?

by Anonymousreply 28May 22, 2025 6:39 PM

California is good but expensive and crowded

by Anonymousreply 29May 22, 2025 6:58 PM

There’s plenty of room in many counties.

by Anonymousreply 30May 22, 2025 7:02 PM

Hey senior lesbian at R28 - hi! - and I’m curious, are you still strongly intending to move to Panama? Or is that more an exploration/maybe kind of thing. (You probably shared elsewhere and I missed it)

by Anonymousreply 31May 22, 2025 7:04 PM

New England might be a nice change of pace if you don't mind snow or a significantly higher cost of living. Beautiful environment, lots of fresh water plus the sea coast.

by Anonymousreply 32May 22, 2025 7:11 PM

I live in CT. While I wish there was more diversity, and the cost of living is high, it’s a pretty safe place in terms of climate events, which are becoming more severe globally.

We never have to evacuate. We don’t have to worry about the excessive heat that is making certain places intolerable. Wildfire risk is pretty low.

by Anonymousreply 33May 22, 2025 7:19 PM

And dull as dishwater. No offense

by Anonymousreply 34May 22, 2025 7:20 PM

Another CT resident here. Actually Northern CT is very affordable compared to the rest of the area, but the souther half or the closer you get to NYC not gets more expensive. It is also kind of dull as mentioned above

by Anonymousreply 35May 22, 2025 7:22 PM

It depends on your stage of life.

If you’re in your 30s, you are more likely to want to be somewhere more dynamic.

But so much of the CT area is beautiful and peaceful, and that holds a lot of allure for many who are more settled.

[bold]TL;DR[/bold]

I am, Torta @ R31. As a matter of fact, I'm leaving this Sunday to pick up my Pensionado Visa (which finally came through last week) in Panama City.

I was going to start a thread about it, but I don't know how well it will be received, because I'm only going to be there for two weeks this time. My plan (which has had to be amended a number of times) is to come back here to FL to get my trailer together just in case I decide to rent it out (it needs a lot of work!), visit family and my bff "up Home," and spend time with my father, who's going to be 89 next month. I have found an old buddy of mine from back home who will take the dog if she holds up until the fall, so waiting to leave until she dies is no longer a consideration. My buddy has three acres outside of Gainesville and Cricket loves going there. So I know Cricket will be well taken care of no matter what.

My new plan is, if I don't feel an urgent Trumpish need to leave earlier (and I may!), to [bold]ride a motorcycle[/bold] to Panama down the east side of TX and cut over onto the Pan American highway to Panama. What a great adventure that will be!! But to do that, I need to wait until the fall when it's cooler -- maybe October? Of course, fall will be here before you know it.

I just bought a smaller and lighter touring bike to ride down there on (see attached), but I'm not sure it's going to work out. I have to make a lot of modifications ($) to make it comfortable enough for me to ride a 400+ mile day and I have to add luggage (just that will cost > 1K). I already put Grip Puppies on the handlebar grips (deadens vibration), but the vibration is still so hard on my wrists I can't ride it > an hour. So we'll see. I may have to sell it and get something else. That kind of riding, which may entail some dirt roads, is hard on your body when you're a vieja!

Thanks for asking, Torta! If you think anyone wants me to start a thread, let me know.

Senior lesbian, thanks for the update at R37! Exciting adventure you’re undertaking! When or if you make that long motorcycle trip this Fall, I hope you make a thread before starting out so lots of us can wish you well.

And cool lighter-weight bike! So sleek.

by Anonymousreply 46May 23, 2025 2:57 AM

I should be in Plymouth MN. I like snow. My choices were all based on not hot and not conservative.

by Anonymousreply 47May 23, 2025 3:30 AM

Wisconsin. Great university towns, resort areas, farmlands, whatever you want.

by Anonymousreply 48May 23, 2025 5:38 AM

California is not a hot weather state like Texas, where did you get that idea from? Los Angles daily average temp is around 72f. Norther California above San Francisco is even cooler. The only exception is Death Valley but no one lives there, it's a national park on the boarder of Nevada.

by Anonymousreply 49May 23, 2025 5:46 AM

Lexington, KY?!

Um, NOPE.

by Anonymousreply 50May 23, 2025 7:02 AM

R8's quiz is shitty.

Fremont, Calfiornia?

Beaches? You're never going to lure me with beaches. Stop asking.

Snowy winters? No or Neither.

Public transportation? Not much of an issue except occasionally in a huge city. And I don't commute. I prefer to live in the center and walk everywhere.

High-paying jobs? Doesn't affect me too directly as I don't work.

Mediocre restaurants? Conservative politics? No way

Mixed politics? Racial diversity? It depends. Some cities are as genuinely diverse but de facto segregated physically and with a great degree of tension. Other cities accommodate people from very different backgrounds more easily.. I've lived happily among people with different political leanings, usually in neighborhoods not whole cities, and more the old school Republicans who were culturally liberal ()the opposite of what the US has today.)

by Anonymousreply 51May 23, 2025 11:22 AM

If you’re gay and married or ever want to be don’t move to a red state. Eventually they will ban gay marriage.

If you’re capable of becoming pregnant don’t move to a red state. Much too dangerous.

by Anonymousreply 52May 23, 2025 11:38 AM

R40, are those all states now?

by Anonymousreply 53May 23, 2025 12:24 PM

I want two weeks of snow and half a year of sweater weather, the rest cool. If I want hot beach weather I'll travel for it. I don't want to need an AC.

I don't want the the surrounding people to be assholes.

by Anonymousreply 54May 23, 2025 2:39 PM

Colorado?

by Anonymousreply 61May 23, 2025 3:52 PM

R54 Me, too! Perfect description of my ideal weather and population. I'd also appreciate some good restaurants and entertainment venues.

by Anonymousreply 62May 24, 2025 2:57 AM

R54 that’s the Bay Area—plus Tahoe for two weeks. Easily done in Marin or nearby.

by Anonymousreply 63May 24, 2025 3:00 AM

My manic one.

by Anonymousreply 64May 24, 2025 5:18 AM

R64 Is there room for one more?

by Anonymousreply 65May 24, 2025 3:18 PM

r49, 'scuse me??? California's San Joaquin and Sacramento Valleys -- a huge land mass filled with millions of people -- is hotter than hell all Summer long. It's a dry heat, but it still can be miserable, especially at night when it doesn't cool off and you have no A/C.

LA/SoCal just a few miles inland is hot and smoggy and barren and ugly.

r63, the East Bay past the Caldecott Tunnel can get miserably hot. I grew up there without A/C. Same with the South Bay/San Jose. It takes 6-8 hours to get to Tahoe from the Bay Area. It is cancelled. Marin is paradise but it's expensive and there are just enough smug, self-entitled people to ruin the otherwise mellow, friendly vibe.

Sonoma County, where I have retired this year, is heaven on earth. It's beautiful, very liberal, very pro-LGTBQ+, friendly, and relatively inexpensive by CA standards. In the Winter, it can get down to the low 30s at night, but no snow below 3,000 feet. My hubs is from New England and laughs when I bitch about the Winter weather here.

I mentioned Oregon as r1. Portland can be gray and rainy for much of the year. The Willamette Valley is less so. Not too much snow. Spring, Summer, and early Fall can be spectacular, even in PDX. People are open and friendly -- just don't ever use the four-letter word, "California" in their presence. They'll be concerned for you when you tell them you're from Texas.

Good luck -- hope you get the hell out of Texas, OP!

by Anonymousreply 66May 24, 2025 10:12 PM

Texas or Florida if you're braindead.

by Anonymousreply 67May 24, 2025 10:44 PM

R63 did I mention Contra Costa?—I did not

by Anonymousreply 70May 25, 2025 12:20 AM

Correction: for R66^^

by Anonymousreply 71May 25, 2025 12:21 AM

Neither did I mention the South Bay.

by Anonymousreply 72May 25, 2025 12:21 AM

I thought you meant "The Golden Triangle," which is Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Orange. I've never heard of the Texas Triangle.

by Anonymousreply 73May 25, 2025 12:22 AM

r72, you mentioned "the Bay Area" which includes the East, North, and South Bays, some parts of which OP would deem uninhabitable due to the need for A/C.

by Anonymousreply 74May 25, 2025 2:33 AM

I mentioned a specific part of the Bay Area.

by Anonymousreply 75May 25, 2025 2:35 AM

I grew up in Contra Costa (1956-1974). No AC, but there weren't that many hot days, and we belonged to a community pool we could walk to.

by Anonymousreply 76May 25, 2025 1:21 PM

It's expensive to live in Vermont. Rents and housing prices are high. Wages are low, unleee you can get a remote gig in tech. Good internet isn't universal (though it is getting better). Health care premiums are among the highest in the country, too. I tell people moving here that Vermont is like another country. You aren't going to find a lot of the fast-food/fast-casual restaurants here or the chain stores you may be used to elsewhere. And there are too, too many restaurants that serve the same overthought out crap for high prices. Like, a local chain where a hot dog, fries, and a drink, and a cheeseburger, fries, and a milkshake will cost you around $45. It's just fucking fast-food served with biodegradable plates and utensils, Bliss Bee. I can go to the Farmhouse and get better for around the same price and get table service and real china/utensils. We have good skiing, good state parks and beaches on lakes, and lots of open space. We're an hour or so to Montreal. If you like to fish and hunt, it's also available here. We don't have gay bars. None. We did have one, but a "DJ" wanted a job there and started a campaign against the place because of its name being anti-trans.

by Anonymousreply 77May 25, 2025 1:30 PM

[quote] 'scuse me??? California's San Joaquin and Sacramento Valleys -- a huge land mass filled with millions of people -- is hotter than hell all Summer long

No one lives there relatively speaking except farm workers and day laborers. The vast majority of the roughly 40 million people in CA live on the coast unless you are in the farm or oil industry. I was born in Sacramento, it's not a big city, and as far as I know it's not a destination for people coming from out of state.

by Anonymousreply 87May 26, 2025 3:02 PM

r81, The San Joaquin Valley is home to approximately 4.3 million people, while the Sacramento Valley has a population of over 2.6 million. That's more than many states.

by Anonymousreply 88May 26, 2025 8:00 PM

R88 - and they live there begrudginly. They know they are in the worst part of the state. R81 is right.

Just because some of the state is hot doesn't mean it's a hot weather state. You cannot escape heat or humidity in Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina, Texas, etc.

A lot of Californians do not experience high temps - that's just a fact. SOME do - but it doesn't make it a 'hot' state.

R98 We have a top 10 state!

by Anonymousreply 99May 27, 2025 4:20 AM

Interesting quiz. My number one was not my "home city", but a city I lived in for a long time and loved. I had to leave for work reasons. The place I moved to for work was awful, and as soon as I could, I got out. Couldn't go back to number one for various reasons, so I thought I should go back to the part of the country in which I grew up. And a coming change in the political climate directed me to a safer place, and it turned out to be my number two,

So I've been where I was supposed to be and ended up where I was supposed to be.

by Anonymousreply 100May 27, 2025 4:57 AM

I got SF, which is where I was born and raised. My list had other Bay Area cities, plus Seattle, Portland, and Denver, all of which I love.

The quiz was heavy on beaches, don't know why. Note that IMHO, San Francisco's Ocean Beach is among the world's shittiest beaches. Have spent all of my life ignoring it. Some surfers seem to love it and many of them die each year. Jus sayin. On the other hand, the other beach, Baker beach, with its view of the Bridge, is fabulous, but I forget it's there.

by Anonymousreply 101May 27, 2025 8:22 AM

Okay, here's something really weird. I have no affiliation with Michigan, never set foot in it. But lately I've been seeing Michigan everywhere. On t-shirts, random videos, people I meet.

What the heck is in Michigan? Is there anything great about Michigan?

by Anonymousreply 102May 28, 2025 6:12 PM

[quote]What about Michigan? It seems like a microcosm of the country.

The food there sucks balls! It's as bland as white bread and mayo. Outside of a big city you really can't find food that does not taste like it came from an assisted living facility. Bland AF. To them and Italian restaurant is exotic. Forget about Mexican food, Thai, BBQ, Chinese, Mediterranean etc.

by Anonymousreply 103May 28, 2025 7:24 PM

Grand Rapids used to be a big center of the furniture industry and still has a lot of design types. The heavy Dutch influence means everything is very neat and clean.

There used to be a large population of very wealthy people who summered upstate (Charlevoix, Petoskey, Traverse City).

by Anonymousreply 104May 28, 2025 10:49 PM

R102 - also could be part of the Michigan tourism blitz. I see it every summer.

West coast of Michigan is nice in the summer and it's very pretty up north (not Northern Michigan).

But the weather blows and there's no 'there' there. Detroit is trying to come back - but that town is a fucking mess. SO spread out and yet the highways are in the worst shape I've ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 105May 28, 2025 11:32 PM

Newport Beach, CA

by Anonymousreply 106May 28, 2025 11:34 PM

Everyone I meet in Detroit and Ann Arbor, it seems, wants to be somewhere else. Whether it’s the weather or the lack of opportunity, they want out. That’s not encouraging.

by Anonymousreply 107May 29, 2025 12:19 AM

R110 - a post stamp sized resort hamlet with a handful of restaurants and one gay resort. It's OK to visit - but live year round? That side of the lake gets all the lake effect snow - practically snows every day.

Saugatuck disappoints in almost every way - although there is a good gay campground nearby.
