Ryan Murphy sets ‘The Shards’ series adaptation at FX

We gonna watch this mess or what?

[quote]First unveiled as a serialized audiobook before hitting bookstands in 2023, The Shards is a dark coming-of-age tale with semi-autobiographical facets for Ellis. Set in Los Angeles in 1981, the story follows a 17-year-old version of Ellis during his final year at the elite Buckley prep school. Upending the character’s world is the arrival of a mysterious new student, Robert Mallory, whose unsettling presence coincides with the activities of a serial killer known as The Trawler.

I'd rather watch a series by Ryan Murphy, called "The Sharts."

Now THAT would be fun!

First foisting Kim Kardashian on us and now Kaia Gerber. My, how the mighty has fallen since Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates

by Anonymousreply 2May 20, 2025 12:27 PM

I'd like to see him take a crack at The Informers. It's the only BEE book I liked but the movie was terrible.

by Anonymousreply 3May 21, 2025 1:39 AM

Minus the vile animal abuse, I hope.

by Anonymousreply 4May 21, 2025 1:40 AM

Ryan Murphy and Dick Wolf are two of the biggest hacks in television right now.

Don't forget me!

by Anonymousreply 6May 21, 2025 2:09 AM

So is Kaia Gerber playing Susan?

Who will play Robert Mallory? Whoever plays him will have to be extremely handsome.

by Anonymousreply 7May 21, 2025 7:48 AM

I couldn’t finish the book, it was just self indulgent bullshit. BEE has a certain writing style that was fun to read for a moment in time spanning the mid 1980s to the very early 90s.

by Anonymousreply 8May 21, 2025 11:15 AM

I liked it. I thought his “Imperial Bedrooms” was absolutely terrible so this was a good return to form.

“The Rules of Attraction” is still my favorite by him.

by Anonymousreply 9May 21, 2025 3:05 PM

Ryan Murphy is the number-one employer of nepo babies in Hollywood. He seems to be addicted to them.

Talent not required.

by Anonymousreply 10May 21, 2025 3:08 PM

How is Brett doing these days? Better than fellow literary brat packers Jay McInerney and Tama Janowitz?

by Anonymousreply 11May 21, 2025 3:25 PM

Ellis still publishes, has a podcast, and seems to be doing ok.

I think Janowitz is the only one whose life seems shitty if you go by her memoir. It ends with her almost destitute and being sued by her brother.

by Anonymousreply 12May 21, 2025 4:52 PM

I thought the show would be about meth.

by Anonymousreply 13May 21, 2025 7:16 PM

R10: I'm all about equity and inclusion!

by Anonymousreply 14May 21, 2025 7:24 PM

I’m available for the ingenue role.

by Anonymousreply 15May 21, 2025 9:05 PM

I loved the book. I about half way through my second reading. I was hopeful about the HBO adaption, dammit. At least Ryan won’t skimp on the gay content, but the sex and nudity wouldn’t have been limited by censors if it was on HBO. I am not sure the FX/Murphy combo is the best avenue, but I am hopeful they will get it right.

What hot nepo babies will play Bret and Robert? What aging male actor will play the girlfriend’s dad who fucks Bret?

by Anonymousreply 16May 21, 2025 10:50 PM

I wonder how Todd is doing and if they're still together.

by Anonymousreply 17May 22, 2025 12:22 AM

Hopefully Sidney Sweeney as Murder Victim # 1.

by Anonymousreply 18June 19, 2025 7:44 AM

I REALLY enjoyed the audio book so I will definitely watch this (but with low expectations). Also, I kinda hope they resolve the ending better in an adaptation.

by Anonymousreply 19June 19, 2025 10:50 AM

I thought Ellis got cancelled ages ago. Didn’t seem to affect Hollywood’s affection for him one bit.

by Anonymousreply 20June 19, 2025 11:11 AM

I loved this book. It’s over-wrought and over-the-top and so much fun. Hopeful that this will be one of the good Ryan Murphy projects.

by Anonymousreply 21June 19, 2025 12:37 PM

Too bad FX won’t be able to show Bret rimming and fingering all those hot guys.

by Anonymousreply 22June 20, 2025 3:44 AM

Why did it go from HBO to Ryan Murphy/FX?

by Anonymousreply 23June 20, 2025 3:49 AM

Prepare for one or two maybe even three good episodes then ⤵️

by Anonymousreply 24June 20, 2025 6:51 AM

I’m expecting episode 4 will introduce Elvis clones and invaders from space.

by Anonymousreply 25June 20, 2025 10:24 AM

r23 HBO's financial involvement hinged on Guadagnino directing the series. He then pulled out, plus HBO made Ryan do an expensive rewrite, to the point that he barely recognised his own script. And so because it wasn't a prestige enough project anymore, it went to FX.

by Anonymousreply 26June 20, 2025 11:02 AM

That Kaia Gerbil keeps getting acting work rattles me to my core.

by Anonymousreply 27June 20, 2025 11:03 AM

Why would Ellis have been cancelled?

by Anonymousreply 28June 20, 2025 2:50 PM

[post redacted because independent.co.uk thinks that links to their ridiculous rag are a bad thing. Somebody might want to tell them how the internet works. Or not. We don't really care. They do suck though. Our advice is that you should not click on the link and whatever you do, don't read their truly terrible articles.]

R26, it went to FX because Murphy stepped in and he has a deal with Disney. FX, which swept the Emmys last year with The Bear and Shogun, is as prestigious an outlet as any at this point.

by Anonymousreply 30June 20, 2025 4:53 PM

He didn't "step in", HBO said no thanks to his vision, especially without Guadagnino's involvement. Hence the extensive rewrites.

by Anonymousreply 31June 20, 2025 4:55 PM

Remember when Bret was fangirling over the frau who wrote the Twilight fanfic (Fifty Shades)? It was all so embarrassing.

by Anonymousreply 32June 20, 2025 4:58 PM

R31, are you talking about Ryan or Bret?

by Anonymousreply 33June 20, 2025 5:14 PM

R28, his politics.
