Was Andy Griffith gay?

Wikipedia says he adopted 2 children but didn't have biological children. Also, he was initiated as a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a national social music "fraternity for men".

Opie has two daddies.

by Anonymousreply 1May 14, 2025 12:45 AM

That would explain Don Knotts and Jim Nabors.

by Anonymousreply 2May 14, 2025 12:54 AM

No damned way, baby—and I was the beard who proved it!

by Anonymousreply 3May 14, 2025 1:00 AM

No - I'm the dame to prove it!

by Anonymousreply 4May 14, 2025 1:06 AM

He certainly was tolerant of Jim Nabors.

Andy caught measles or chickenpox as an adult and became sterile as a result. Hence the adopted kids.

R5. Keep my husband's name out of your fucking mouth

by Anonymousreply 7May 14, 2025 1:21 AM

I'm pretty sure he liked the ladies. Not every seemingly perpetately single person is homosexual - my mom is hetero and has been single all my 45 years and a few more - but if AG was we'll never know the full truth because's dead.

Inability to father children and an interest in music? No one must be safe from your hyperactive gaydar.

by Anonymousreply 9May 14, 2025 8:51 PM

Have you missed anyone?

by Anonymousreply 10May 14, 2025 9:17 PM

by Anonymousreply 11May 14, 2025 9:21 PM

Floyd, Don Knotts, Giomer? Jesus Christ this was more like Fire Island than Mayberry

by Anonymousreply 12May 14, 2025 9:28 PM

Oh dear? No, dear.

It's "perpetually".

by Anonymousreply 13May 14, 2025 9:44 PM

R11 - I thought you were making a joke about the way Barney always mispronounced words, e.g. therapetic. 😆

by Anonymousreply 14May 14, 2025 9:51 PM

I think old Andy was a sex pest and tried to bed any female guest star on his show.

I also think I read this here so take it with a grain of salt.

[quote]Andy caught measles or chickenpox as an adult and became sterile as a result. Hence the adopted kids.

It was the mumps. Ron Howard wrote about it in "The Boys," a memoir he co-authored with his brother. From an article about it:

[quote]“As our storytellers went, Andy was the most uninhibited,” the Apollo 13 director wrote. “I was mildly scandalized when he told everyone that he had been rendered sterile by a bout of the mumps in his teens, so he and his wife had adopted their children.”

[quote]While Howard did not specify his age in learning this information, he was young enough that his father Rance took the moment to clarify what Griffith had said.

[quote]“‘[Griffith’s] candor was laudable, but the very subject of sterility was a new one to my virgin ears,” he continued. “I sort of understood what Andy meant from the context of the story, but Dad preemptively took the opportunity to explain the concept in greater detail in the car ride home that day. He explained that lots of people of his and Andy’s generation came down with the mumps, but he was lucky not to have had a case as bad as Andy’s.”
