Using AI to apply for a job
I’m in the process of applying for a high level job—the search committee is requiring a few essays about my leadership philosophy, etc.
I put the questions into an AI program and it shot out some good (not perfect) essays. Should I just edit these and submit? This job is a far reach for me anyway but figured I give it a shot.

Absolutely, and anyway using AI is one of the skills you’ll be expected to have in any job now so why wouldn’t you use it as part of the application process?
Just make sure that it will “pass” as a human-produced essay. There are lots of sites / videos out there that will tell you how to do that.

R1, I keep hearing about sites that strip out identifiers. Do you know of any? I just told ChatGPT to “strip out any AI identifiers.” Is that enough?

There are a lot of tells in an AI produced essay. Some are so seemingly insignificant that only another AI would spot the pattern - a lot of it is the use of certain word patterns, as well as transitions and repetition of ideas, words, and phrases.
Also, a key indicator is lack of depth and personality. Writing is a unique way of expressing yourself. We telegraph who we are through our writing. AI generated essays do not contain anything unique or specific. They don't deeply dive into the personality of background of the writer. In essence, an AI generated essay could have been written by anyone.
You should assume that they'll use an AI program to determine whether it was AI generate if it's a high level position.

I admit that I am much slower doing calculations in my head now than I was before I got lazy and started using calculators for even simple stuff - the omnipresence of the iPhone calculator has definitely been a crutch since it came out.

Which was my point. Students are already losing the ability to write. The obvious push for AI on every DL thread is alarming.

Don't do this. My partner recently got a high level job and was told his was the only resume and cover letter they got that wasn't AI generated.

And as an instructor, I can immediately tell that someone has used a humanizer even if I can't prove it. I can tell because I deal with AI generated writing all day long. Maybe it's different outside of education, but I think less of people who can't be assed to do the work. I am not against AI and use it for a lot of things, but not when authenticity or my credibility is on the line.

OP, so you already feel under qualified but rather than challenge yourself in the application process, you’re seeking assistance with using A.I. with which you only have basic skills.
What do you plan to do if you actually got the job? Is this for the Trump administration?
Why are you wasting everyone’s time?

Everyone is using AI. Just use a program that’s strips out the AI signatures

Oh, sweetie… people who are hired for truly “high level” jobs don’t send in an application nor do they have to write cover letters. The executive recruiter presents the candidate to the client.

I don't understand why using AI would be frowned upon. It gives the information they want to see, right? Is it somehow better if you sweat over every word?

Fair enough, grandpa... but people mulling over whether to use AI for a job application aren't applying for a truly "high level job," either.

A few essays on leadership philosophy? WTF?

R8, the job your partner applied to wasn’t as “high level” as he led you to believe.

The only legitimate use of AI is to condense Google search results and produce today's listenable music. Everything else will soften and macerate humanity to the point Silicon takes over Carbon lifeforms. 🤖☄️ 🎶In the Year 2525...🎶

The sky was so blue the day Cheryl and I took our first trip Once Around The Garden. She then she died after smoking copious amounts of pot, silly! I remember it like it was just yesterday, holding a bag of frozen turkey meatballs, my puny cocklet, and a caftan won on a Golden Girls tribute cruise. Ha ha ha, I'll say!

OP, Do not put your resume, cover letter, or personal statement through an AI program. Companies are now using software to detect AI-generated resumes, cover letters, and personal statements and putting them in the circular file.

Look, if you’re not capable of writing these essays, the job’s not for you. This will all come out at some point so go the extra mile or don’t apply.
