Say Something Awesome About Your City, Suburb, or Town

I’ll go first.

I’ve lived in Seattle eight years. Every repair made to buildings, sidewalks, and streets is an algebraic equation that meets function over appearance. Your walking path through the city is bumpy, but sublime. Ceramic tiles heal cement curbs, softer stuff surrounds trees. They have done such a good job at keeping trees in this city.

This is supposed to be an appreciation thread, so I shouldn’t say bad things about where I came from or compare it to other areas. It’s just naked appreciation. This thread will die by 2nd post if any.

The city is always repairing/maintaining our roadways and the high number of social conservatives squelch any "drag queen" pedophile attempts.

The capital is popularly nicknamed Chocolate City by its local population. A lot of whites in and around DC don’t even know that. DC has a had black majority for most of its existence. Though in I believe the past 2 decades it’s not a true majority but a plurality majority with African-Americans still being the biggest group.

by Anonymousreply 2May 12, 2025 12:36 AM

World-class architecture, food, and music, despite failing at everything else.

by Anonymousreply 3May 12, 2025 12:41 AM

My city has had the largest percentage decrease in population since 1950 than any other major American city.

Hint: it isn't Detroit.

by Anonymousreply 4May 12, 2025 1:06 AM

R4 It’s Baltimore. DC’s ratchet cousin.

by Anonymousreply 5May 12, 2025 1:08 AM

I've lived in other cities but always come back home to Montreal.

by Anonymousreply 6May 12, 2025 1:19 AM

My city has amazing snow removal, unlike all of the other adjoining suburbs.

by Anonymousreply 7May 12, 2025 1:37 AM

It's awesome how they transformed Times Square from a unique but seedy district to a soulless homogeneous tourist destination.

by Anonymousreply 8May 12, 2025 1:44 AM

I am in a good mood, so I will share what I love about living where I do. I'm in commuting distance to NYC, but am deep in the country. It is absolutely postcard perfect, and while hiking in the beautiful weather today, we could see three states. The people here are mostly well educated, and fun. I generally love that our town feels like a rather cozy English mystery novel. Generally. As it's an appreciation thread, I will follow the OP's instructions, lol.

by Anonymousreply 9May 12, 2025 1:53 AM

It's one of the oldest cities in Europe and certainly one of the most beautiful. Associated with one of Hercules's labors, it was funded by a Roman emperor and the birthplace of two others, but in fact was settled at least 900 years before the Romans It has great and varied architecture, art, and history.

by Anonymousreply 10May 12, 2025 2:30 AM

I live in a Wisconsin suburb and love it. Close to good shopping and restaurants. On the shore of Lake Michigan, rents / condo prices are reasonable. Oh, and less than an hour to Chicago if I want to get mugged or shot.

by Anonymousreply 11May 12, 2025 2:53 AM

I live in a town in New England on a lake in the sticks. Not so far out that the drive into the Capital city is only a fifteen minutes away but the difference is like night and day. I love it.

by Anonymousreply 12May 12, 2025 3:00 AM

Golden Gate Bridge. Alcatraz. Cable Car.

by Anonymousreply 13May 12, 2025 3:08 AM

My city has a ton of family-owned restaurants. My favorite one is an Indian restaurant that's been open for 35 years.

by Anonymousreply 14May 12, 2025 3:38 AM

People in my city seem to have an innate friendliness, from the mayor to random cashiers.

by Anonymousreply 15May 12, 2025 3:47 AM

plurality majority 🧐🤔

Do tell how that works….

by Anonymousreply 16May 12, 2025 4:48 AM

It seems like half the victims of the Palisades fire headed south to invade our small city, with rents spiking and bidding wars everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 17May 12, 2025 4:50 AM

Parks. My city made a decision in the early 20th century to hire the Olmsted brothers to lay out a comprehensive park plan for the whole city, making sure that a park would be within walking distance of every neighborhood. Several parks are showcase parks, with magnificent gardens or other distinctive features. Others are true neighborhood parks - a baseball diamond in one corner, or a couple of tennis courts with permanent park benches in shady spots or playground structures for kids and splash fountains. . A large river runs through the center of the city, and a waterfall dropping into a gorge is a unique feature at the edge of downtown. There are numerous parks all along the river. It's the kind of town from which young people flee after high school to go live in bigger cities. But a large proportion return to it in late 20s or early 30s because after looking around at the traffic and urban issues in the cities they spent their twenties in, they consider it a better place to raise a family. The park system is a big part of that.

My city had the first openly gay mayor in the US.

As someone always says here on DL—-make of that what you will.

by Anonymousreply 19May 12, 2025 9:50 AM

My city still grows by leaps and bounds. More than half the population of the state live in the metro area. I have lived here all my life (72 years), never considered moving permanently, and it has given me an exceptional life.

by Anonymousreply 20May 12, 2025 12:14 PM

Lynn Lynn the city of sin you’ll never come out the way you came in.

by Anonymousreply 21May 12, 2025 12:42 PM

Two of the greatest universities on earth.

by Anonymousreply 22May 12, 2025 1:27 PM

They've installed sidewalks and traffic lights that make it easier to walk places. I have a lot of shopping nearby that I can easily walk to if I'm just picking up a few things. I'd walk to my Dr's office but I'm afraid my BP won't go down by the time she takes a reading.

by Anonymousreply 23May 12, 2025 1:44 PM

I had the time of my life - i saw a man dance with his own wife!

(Oh - and R11 - please do come visit. I will be happy to shoot you myself.)

by Anonymousreply 24May 12, 2025 4:40 PM

R22 is a Lesley grad

by Anonymousreply 25May 12, 2025 4:50 PM

My city has the best surf on the East Coast and is very safe. It also is walkable, a bird flyway and has fantastic restaurants. It’s a less than one hour train ride to midtown Manhattan.

by Anonymousreply 26May 12, 2025 4:51 PM

It’s still Lawnguyland

by Anonymousreply 27May 12, 2025 5:07 PM

My city had over 13,000 armed troops arrive and soon after starting shooting citizens, killed a lot of citizens.

by Anonymousreply 28May 12, 2025 5:11 PM

Awesome? No but it was record setting for its time. ^

by Anonymousreply 29May 12, 2025 5:13 PM

I live in Phoenix. The cities and streets are in a grid so it's easy to get around. Plus, no natural disasters here. You can't imagine the relief I feel when watching the news and seeing other states deal with hurricanes, earthquakes, snow storms, tornadoes, floods, etc...

I'll tolerate the summer heat in exchange for that.

by Anonymousreply 30May 12, 2025 5:23 PM

Let’s remember not to try to make Phoenix rhyme with “Kleenex”

by Anonymousreply 31May 12, 2025 5:35 PM

People in my city always try to do the right thing socially and politically. It blows up in everyone’s faces sometimes. Plus, we have a great regional airport that sometimes beats the prices of the major ones within driving distance.

by Anonymousreply 32May 12, 2025 5:36 PM

…a great regional airport that sometimes beats the prices of the major ones within driving distance…

That’s some kind of ringing endorsement?! 🤔

by Anonymousreply 33May 12, 2025 5:40 PM

My city is very affordable. You can get a lot of bang your reaL estate buck for a New England City We have an nice easy access airport as well and for a few weeks in the fall the leaf peeping is wonderful

by Anonymousreply 34May 12, 2025 6:07 PM

Lots of hot guys. Also, they've replaced some traffic lights with roundabouts strategically, and it has made driving so much better.

by Anonymousreply 35May 12, 2025 7:32 PM

An enviable collection of independently owned arthouse and repertory movie theaters

by Anonymousreply 36May 12, 2025 7:46 PM

My city has some of the most incredible regional food specialties, and sometimes I wonder if it's subjective but after a lifetime of travel, I still think it does what it does the absolute best. It is the only city in the world with buildings by Richardson, Sullivan, and Wright within the city limits and an Olmsted parks. It has a vibrant nightlife that goes until the wee hours. The people are cornball friendly but it is genuine and not, as cynics often say, hypocritical. They really DO care how you are! There is a sense of beleaguered togetherness after taking it on the chin for so long (hint: Rust Belt) but about 32% of the world's fresh water flows by it on its way to the ocean. Oil shmoil -- the future is in fresh water.

by Anonymousreply 37May 12, 2025 9:00 PM

Everyone here has a plan: a business plan, start-up, a screenplay, an audition, or some other side-grift on deck - except those who are born here.

The weather is great?

by Anonymousreply 38May 12, 2025 9:07 PM

Steve Martin posts from R38

by Anonymousreply 39May 12, 2025 9:12 PM

R5 is incorrect.

by Anonymousreply 40May 12, 2025 9:21 PM

[quote] Oh, and less than an hour to Chicago if I want to get mugged or shot.

Grow the fuck up with this shit. You're more likely to get shot in Milwaukee or Kenosha, and certainly more likely to get killed by a drunk driver.

by Anonymousreply 41May 12, 2025 9:37 PM

These statements would be much more impactful if the names of the cities were included. There are many places that meet the criteria of the descriptions; so they become generic.

by Anonymousreply 42May 12, 2025 9:44 PM

Houston doesn't smell as bad as Pasadena.

by Anonymousreply 43May 12, 2025 9:45 PM

A tree grows in it.

by Anonymousreply 44May 12, 2025 9:47 PM

R44 is the richest person on DataLounge. I fucking love you.

by Anonymousreply 45May 12, 2025 9:49 PM

R27 it is indeed, but if you have to live on lawn Guyland, the city by the sea is pretty nice, just ask Joan Jett. And it’s no slouch in the gay history department.

I live in a gorgeous scenic area with an ocean nearby, rivers, forests, hiking, gardens, parks, and an excess of natural beauty.

We get many tourists but I do not live in one of the popular tourist towns but in a town inhabited mostly by locals. I like that. If I want to visit one of the high end tourist towns I'm minutes away.
