I abused my skin in my teens and twenties and have made a conscious effort to take better care of it in my thirties. I tend to have really dry skin and am an avowed whore for Avene's "Cicalfate restorative protective cream" which does wonders for my face. What skincare products are you willing to splurge on, if any?
Josie Maran, if I am splurging. But I am a cheap bastard and use cheaper stuff from Trader Joe's and Dollar 25.

Granny’s Possum Fat emollient bar.

Yes I am a skin care whore, OP. It's an appalling waste of money but still I continue. My swiss dermatologist makes me use Cicalfate after my twice yearly laser cleanups. He removes all weirdness from my aging skin. and then as soon as there is a scab I start with the Cicalfate. No scars ever. He's pretty expert with his laser, of course.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 10, 2025 7:57 PM |
I am more prone to spend bigger money on products for my face than I am my body. Eucerin, a drugstore brand, has some great body lotions that work well and are affordable. Occasionally I will get a bottle of Kiehl's Creme de Corps which is expensive, but it is a fantastic body lotion and one of the mid-sized bottles will last me months, so in the long run it's not too egregious of a splurge. That's about as far as I go in terms of "luxury" brands.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 10, 2025 8:02 PM |
For many years I was an out of control skincare whore. I cringe when I think of the money I spent on serums and Vitamin C, etc. Drunk Elephant anyone?
Now my skincare routine consists of Cetaphil, Cerave and a couple Kiehls products.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 10, 2025 8:05 PM |
Even non luxury brands are pricy and there are so many highly specific products nowadays. One could spend hours applying specific products head to toe.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 10, 2025 8:05 PM |
You failed to mention how Avene's "Cicalfate restorative protective cream" changed your skin. How often you use. Where you buy it.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 10, 2025 8:28 PM |
My jawline / neck are very sensitive and turn red after shaving and through the day. I had teenage acne in that area and some scars. My dermatologist said nothing can make it better. Any lotions helped anyone with this?

The shiny faced bitches who use every expensive product you can find stand out from a distance,.and not for their youthful skin.

i used argan oil and got rid of an inflamed, hot to the touch rash. go to sephora and test a product. if you can get the attention of a sales associate you can request a sample of a product to try at home before committing to a purchase.

Nivea Men right after coming out of the evening shower. It's all about trapping the moisture, really.
In the morning, I apply a generous amount of invisible SPF 50 sunblock.
Other than that: No smoking, and consciously staying out of the sun.

Very sensible, Dutchie. A lot of Dutch people, though fair skinned, can get suprisingly deep tans.

R8 you would probably get relief with OP's cream Cicalfate. That's the type of thing it's made for.

I buy one of the "value size" tubs of Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizing cream about once a year. It's around $100 and I think the jar has about 8.5 ounces. A little of it goes a long way and the container lasts me close to an entire year, so it's really not as expensive as one might think.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 11, 2025 2:13 AM |
R21 - Gold Bond crepe cream does a pretty decent job for $10.
I've bought (regretfully) some pricey products - and they're still in the refrigerator!
Outside of a daily moisturizer with SPF30 and active ingredients - that's a must - #2 is a Red Light therapy mask. That shit is incredible. #3 is hyaluronic acid oral supplements. #4 daily collagen powder.
That's all you really need.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 11, 2025 2:43 AM |
Which red light therapy mask? What does it do? Can you really see a difference?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 11, 2025 3:29 AM |
R24 - oh hell yeah. Look up pics and some videos. Only 'problem' is that you have to do it at least 3x a week for 20 minutes. It's not permanent.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 11, 2025 3:33 AM |
I used to be. Then one day I stopped using them and didn't notice any difference. So I quit using them, by and large.

Any suggestions on getting rid of blackheads? I tried the pore strips they just about ripped the skin off my nose.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 11, 2025 3:57 AM |
R28 I don't really get traditional acne but I do get blackheads that only seem to arise on my nose. It's fucking annoying. The only thing I've found that somewhat keeps them at bay is using a retinol on that part of my face. I put a drop of Differin gel on my nose every other day or so and it does seem to help.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 11, 2025 4:01 AM |
R7 it's available online (Amazon and many other retailers) as well as at Ulta. I use it periodically whenever I feel my skin getting dry or if I notice flakiness on my face. It is especially good in the winter months. It also has zinc oxide in it which is naturally antibacterial and also has UV protection (albeit probably minor in that product based on the percentage—it is an ingredient used in mineral sunscreens though). I find it soothes my skin significantly.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 11, 2025 4:18 AM |
R28 a bit of toothpaste mixed with your normal skin cream can do wonders on blackheads.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 11, 2025 9:37 AM |
Or you could be a big grown up man, and get a prescription or non-prescription product that resolves blackheads. Such as any 2% salicylic acid in a pH-optimized vehicle (pH ~3.5). There are dozens on the market. And a non-comedogenic moisturizer or sunscreen.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 11, 2025 12:59 PM |
what about white heads in the nose area? my friend had this problem and was asking me what to use...
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 11, 2025 1:29 PM |
Retin-A at night, 2-3 nights I will put Vaseline over it.
Eighth Day Serum- Its fucking expensive.
I have the Omnilux Red Light Mask for Men - I use daily for 18 minutes (2 sessions)
(Don't buy the "female" one- the Men's mask is stronger and made for men's thicker skin)
Sunscreen EVERY DAY- SPF 50. (I am not telling you the brand because I was BITCHED OUT here last year when I recommended it) Its really good and goes on Matte - so many sunscreens are greasy and heavy as hell-
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 11, 2025 1:54 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 12, 2025 7:52 AM |
Skinceuticals and Jones Road.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 12, 2025 9:04 AM |
I use products from a line named The Ordinary that I buy at Ulta. Great prices and effective products - I use several of their serums.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 12, 2025 9:25 AM |
I watched a video on YouTube from Doctorly (3.37M subscribers) and they were raving about the moisturizing properties of petroleum jelly - otherwise known as Vaseline. They said the refined petroleum product is the greatest skin care ingredient of all time. They gave 8 uses for it.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 12, 2025 9:39 AM |
And as a basic hand cream, I discovered Cerave when I was going through chemotherapy and like their products as my go to drugstore brand.
This is my nighttime routine if I can be bothered:
Cleanse with just plain water, or Eve Lom oil cleanser.
Or cleanse with an AHA cleanser like Mario Badescu Glycolic cleanser. It’s mild but really aids dissolving large plugs in the pores. It’s important to only exfoliate when required (for me that’s three times a week) , because there is a theory your skin only has a finite number of times it can regenerate until it looks “old”.
Then put on Paula’s Choice 2% BHA liquid. It’s very mild can be used more frequently.
Let dry and follow up with Skinceuticals c20 vitamin C. (I do not use the Ferulic, because I have acne prone skin), then Skinceuticals Phyto gel - a green serum that works on dark spots and soothes and lightly moisturises the skin after using the vitamin C. Using these two together gives an almost hard boiled egg smoothness after a couple of weeks to the face while you use it.
Then the Skinceuticals B5 gel - it’s a hyaluronic serum and unlike all others I have tried, does not draw water from the skin.
Follow up with Drunk Elephant marula oil and an eye cream.
In the morning I just use plain water or a mild oil cleanser or Cerave cleanser, the B5 gel, the Marula oil and sunscreen. The latter is pretty much what your skin can handle, I use La Roche-Poway Anthelios 50+ formulated for sensitive eyes.

I like Biossance. The cleanser is nice, as is the100% squalane oil just out of the shower. I've used Erno Laszlo creams and serums forever (I am ibdeed a whore)
by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 12, 2025 11:43 AM |
I rotate based on whim and how I'm feeling financially.
I was big on Kiehl's Facial Fuel scrub and wash for a long time until I started getting really red all the time.
Then it was Jack Black Face Buff and Cleanser until my skin sort of got bored with it.
Now I sort of have a mix of Brickell spray toner (feels so good after a shave), Lumin charcoal cleanser and Everyman Jack Charcoal scrub.
I got the (very affordable) Everyman Jack in a pinch when I forgot my normal scrub on vacation and the only place near me was a grocery store. I got some thinking I would just throw it out when the week was over, but now I keep buying it because it works and it's cheap.
The charcoal stuff really does well on my skin, even though I think sometimes it's just colored black of it feels more "manly" for straight guys. It also stains my tub really quickly which I find annoying.
I got a Drunk Elephant kit for Christmas from a friend who is a skincare nerd. I haven't opened it yet, but I promise to try.

R28, I've been using Remedy for pore size (by the cute docs from Doctorly, mentioned above) on my nose for about a year and am happy with it.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 12, 2025 5:41 PM |
R37- I use Isdin- I don't care that its expensive, I get the large 3.4 ounce bottle once a year for 25% off and I usually snag another 10% sale- So its around $55.00 each and lasts 6 months- so $110.00 a year. I just really like it.
R39- I use the Multi Peptide and HA serum - Its great- I buy the large 2 ounce bottle and that lasts 6 months. (I use Eight Day every other say because its so expensive)
And I now use Cera Ve Skin cleansing Foaming Cleansing oil that was recommended here- Its great!

Started using Ursa Major night Bloom serum with Retinal, not retinol. Huge difference within 1 week
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 12, 2025 8:45 PM |
Apothéke Edelweiss Nº7 serum. You need an introduction to Dr. Kropf in Gstaad to get it. Amniotic extract from Swiss Blacknose sheep — rich in regenerative cytokines and ‘pure cell memory’ — farmed on high-altitude pastures in the Alps and illegal for import throughout Europe. It also contains wild saffron essence from the protected and endangered Crocus sativus, hand-harvested each October on a single slope above Les Avants, behind Montreux. The saffron builds a very natural peachy glow.

I've never used anything on my skin. I wash my face with cheap Ivory soap. That's all I do. BUT I eat a very very careful diet. Skin health starts from within.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 13, 2025 12:38 AM |
R50 - I will agree with you on the 'starts from within' part up to a point.
You can see some improvements from topical skincare products to be certain. However, more expensive isn't necessarily better - and God knows there are millions of products out there to try so it's hard to navigate.
But as you get older, your body stops producing a lot of the elements needed for cellular repair and maintenance. Exercise, healthy diet and good sleep only lessens the impact of aging.
That's why I recommend daily collagen powder, ORAL hyaluronic supplements, and red light therapy. That's actually helping your skin from the inside out. Topical treatments will only go so far.

The funny thing about R48's piss-take is that it doesn't even sound too over the top--language quite similar to that *is* actually used in skincare marketing.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 13, 2025 5:16 PM |
R52 - agreed - I couldn't tell if it was fake or not - the description was a bit too on the nose. Exclusivity sells.

R51--R46 here- I forgot! I take Collagen every day as well- I use Youtheory for Men- It do 7 caps a day.. I have taken this for 2 years (45 now) No idea if it works but I look decent. But I know 50-55 is the hit the wall age, so maybe it will help me hit it lightly.

Aquaphor is the only thing that helps with my dry hands the combination of petroleum jelly and lanolin works miracles. For my body I mostly stick with a body oil I really like everyday oils mainstay. I get complements on the scent as well. For my face I youth to the people superfood cleanser for a cleanser and first aid ultra repair for moisturizer. Sunscreen I wear Korean brand.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | May 13, 2025 5:52 PM |
R51 here - forgot to add daily sunscreen moisturizer with active ingredients. That's actually the #1 anti-aging tool you can use.
