"Hppy bday"! (our lips aren't moving...)

I sent her a bottle of Jean Nate and a nice blouse.

You’d never know she had a personality until she hosted SNL in the 70s. She’s loose and unguarded with that cast. It changed her life and career.

Murphy Brown is a tough watch now. Pretty corny. It was fun for the time.

You can watch her become an actor by watching films from her early career. She was AWFUL in The Sand Pebbles, one of her first. She improved a bit by Carnal Knowledge. She was one of the first nepo baby who learned her craft on screen. She was worth the wait.

I still love her as Lakey in the group. Cool elegance. And a lesbian!

I thought she was so out of place in Ghandi. For me, she just didn't fit and took me out of the movie. I'm sure there were other actresses who would have blended better.

She IS Candice Bergen!

by Anonymousreply 10May 10, 2025 3:17 AM

She's only 79? It's like she's been around for ever and ever. Wasn't she on the cover of Vogue in 1958? She should be at LEAST 85 by now.

I wish it held up better, r6, but there are still some great moments. When I watched it again I thought, well, it's amiable.

R12: "amiable". That's why I LOVE DL!

I watched Murphy Brown and thought she did well. It was the first sitcom that I can remember which alluded to politics. Funny how Dan Quayle seems so quaint now.

I think she's a pretty good comedian. She is even funny talking about her crappy performances and her "Shelley Winters wig" in "The Domino Principle." Her own hair looked flawless in 1985.

R3 Charlie McCarthy is in the Smithsonian. He will probably be tossed in a fireplace by “He Who Must Be Obeyed” because he looks too British.

2 long-term marriages. Good for her!

by Anonymousreply 22May 11, 2025 7:52 AM

In my childhood, she epitomised American glamour to me after I read in one of my mother’s women’s magazines during her Murphy Brown era that Candice Bergen picked up Louis Malle at the airport wearing a fur coat with nothing underneath and after setting off a metal detector she some awkward explaining to do to security.
