Extra, Extra!

I know when I make a film about a story based in Europe, that I'm going to film it in Alabama.

by Anonymousreply 1May 4, 2025 11:47 PM

Trumpy, you can do stupid things!

by Anonymousreply 2May 5, 2025 12:07 AM

Sucks for Canada. Film/TV production, based around massive tax giveways to production companies, is like half of Vancouver's economy these days.

by Anonymousreply 3May 5, 2025 12:14 AM

Right, because there's such an enormous unfair trade imbalance compared to the number of films we export. His idiocy knows no bounds.

by Anonymousreply 4May 5, 2025 12:18 AM

What exactly would the tariff be put on?

by Anonymousreply 5May 5, 2025 12:19 AM

He has no understanding whatsoever of business or trade. This is just a fuck-you to the entertainment industry.

by Anonymousreply 6May 5, 2025 12:19 AM

This doesn't seem really targeted at foreign films, like Italian, French, Hindi films released in the US. This would instead go after instead US-produced films that were shot outside the US because of the tax regimes established in those places that provide often huge rebates for producing in that country. Australia, the UK, and Canada all provide rather large incentives for Hollywood to make films in those countries.

This would be a huge drag on the Hollywood studios and production companies (because they feast on those foreign tax subsidies) but would be one of the best things ever for the LA economy and the all the creative unions.

by Anonymousreply 7May 5, 2025 12:25 AM

Jesus. National security threat? A threat to U.S. film industry jobs, sure. We know that. But national security.

by Anonymousreply 8May 5, 2025 12:54 AM

[quote] Canada all provide rather large incentives for Hollywood to make films in those countries.

Maybe decades ago, today it’s because the talent pool in Canada is broad and deep and the film studio infrastructure is world class, and the lower dollar stretches a budget further.

by Anonymousreply 9May 5, 2025 1:03 AM

Insanely stupid. Even if it was somehow legal for him to do this it’s effectively unenforceable.

by Anonymousreply 10May 5, 2025 1:07 AM

R9 No not at all. British Columbia, for example, offers a 35% tax credit to all productions and I believe it is being increased to 40% this year.

If world class production infrastructure and crews were all that mattered BC and the other provinces wouldn't be offering the most generous tax credit packages in the world and definitely wouldn't be making them even more lavish for the studios.

by Anonymousreply 11May 5, 2025 1:09 AM

European Street on the Universal backlot is going to be getting a lot of use this year.

by Anonymousreply 12May 5, 2025 1:10 AM

Yeah but R11 Georgia and other states also provide similar tax incentives (in addition to having lower taxes than Canada to start with).

by Anonymousreply 13May 5, 2025 1:13 AM

What next? Foreign rentboys?

by Anonymousreply 14May 5, 2025 1:16 AM

That cotton candy hair in OP pic is disturbing.

by Anonymousreply 15May 5, 2025 1:17 AM

Yeah r13 but that’s not the point. The post was in response to someone who incorrectly stated there are no tax breaks in BC. Pay attention.

by Anonymousreply 16May 5, 2025 1:19 AM

Now do a tax on Slavic whores imported to service fat slobs! I dare ya!

by Anonymousreply 17May 5, 2025 1:26 AM

R5, surely you remember Trump promising to double the cost of everyone’s Netflix subscription.

by Anonymousreply 18May 5, 2025 1:27 AM

R15 He's looking like shit recently, moreso than usual.

by Anonymousreply 19May 5, 2025 1:39 AM

[quote] The post was in response to someone who incorrectly stated there are no tax breaks in BC. Pay attention.

Oh, dear R16! Speaking of not paying attention, re-read what I wrote at R9 and tell me where I state there are no tax breaks in BC.

by Anonymousreply 20May 5, 2025 1:42 AM

Gist my good man, gist.

by Anonymousreply 21May 5, 2025 2:18 AM

It's not going to happen. He's just rambling and getting satisfaction out of people overreacting. It's the only thing that can possibly get him hard anymore.

by Anonymousreply 22May 5, 2025 2:26 AM

I trust R11 over R9

Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" is estimated to cost $250 million to make, and all of the production appears to be in the UK, Morocco, and Sicily. Matt Damon may need to go to Mar-a-Lago to beg for an exemption.

No one knows how the movie tariffs would work yet. Would it be a tariff tax on every ticket sold? Or would the 100% tariff require The Odyssey to pay an additional $250 million up front before it can be shown in the US? Mel Gibson and Jon Voight are Hollywood ambassadors to the White House, so maybe they will figure this all out.

by Anonymousreply 25May 5, 2025 3:38 AM

I'm putting a tariff on any movie that doesn't star Mel Gibson, James Woods, or Scott Baio

by Anonymousreply 26May 5, 2025 3:41 AM

They’re nudies!

by Anonymousreply 27May 5, 2025 3:45 AM

This could honestly be a win for the Los Angeles economy.

by Anonymousreply 28May 5, 2025 3:53 AM

He's probably responding to the recent headlines.

You think other countries aren't going to slap reciprocal tarrifs on Hollywood products, r28?

by Anonymousreply 29May 5, 2025 3:55 AM

Mel Gibson should be VERY interested in the threat of these tariffs since he will begin filming the sequel to The Passion of the Christ this year.

[quote] The sequel to "The Passion of the Christ," titled "The Resurrection of the Christ," is scheduled to be filmed at Cinecittà Studios in Rome. It will also be filmed in rural locations in Southern Italy, including Altamura, Ginosa, Gravina Laterza, and Matera, according to Variety. Filming is expected to begin in August 2025. (Google AI)

by Anonymousreply 30May 5, 2025 3:58 AM

I think China has already stopped importing US movies, but the US film industry gets a huge amount of its revenues from overseas ticket sales. If other countries retaliate, Hollywood could be hard hit. Plus the whole services issue, as the guy below mentions.

by Anonymousreply 31May 5, 2025 4:01 AM

That's it. I'm changing the location to downtown LA and parts of Arizona. Done and done.

by Anonymousreply 32May 5, 2025 4:01 AM

Gibson could easily film that in Southern California or Arizona.

by Anonymousreply 35May 5, 2025 4:06 AM

R29 Canada basically does not have an independent TV or film industry - it is completely tied up with Hollywood. They really do not have any way to fight back. Replace American film production with Chinese? Fill the cinemas with exclusively Canadian-financed films (there are about 10 made a year) ?

by Anonymousreply 36May 5, 2025 4:16 AM

Deadline and Variety are asking if this also applies to streaming productions, and if Netflix and other streamers are in a world of hurt.

by Anonymousreply 37May 5, 2025 4:18 AM

The fact that he's calling this a national security matter means he thinks he can manifest this into being by executive order.

I'm so sick of this shit. But hey, enjoy the facist state you voted for, morons.

by Anonymousreply 38May 5, 2025 4:26 AM

Gawd, he's such a moron. Just die already.

by Anonymousreply 39May 5, 2025 4:58 AM

Such an idiot and such an embarrassment for you guys.

by Anonymousreply 40May 5, 2025 5:21 AM

No more foreign plays on Broadway! That guy Shakespeare? Forget it!

by Anonymousreply 41May 5, 2025 5:22 AM

So in the last 24 hours he has demanded the reopening of Alcatraz, tariffs on foreign made films, a $45 million military parade, decreed that “beautiful baby girls” should have only 3 dolls and 5 pencils, claims he “doesn’t know” if he needs to uphold the Constitution…did he double his Adderall dose or something? Can’t someone shoot him with an elephant dart?

by Anonymousreply 42May 5, 2025 5:23 AM

Let’s not gorget the foreign box office dollars the US will lose as the rest of the world boycotts your films.

by Anonymousreply 43May 5, 2025 5:31 AM

by Anonymousreply 44May 5, 2025 5:32 AM

I bet Tom Cruise hearing this news is freaking him out. I bet his freaky intensity going to the Oval Office would look like a Tom Cruise movie. ……. I’m tired - you know what I mean. Will he be Jerry McGuire or Mitch McDeate?

by Anonymousreply 45May 5, 2025 6:31 AM

Let's get down to what's really important. How is this going to affect Bel Ami and Latin Leche?

by Anonymousreply 46May 5, 2025 9:52 AM

It's all to distract the media from reporting on the impending disaster of the Trump economy, R42.

by Anonymousreply 47May 5, 2025 11:32 AM

The film industry would do well to just completely ignore this and have some key figures become signatories on the existing lawsuits against Trump that rightly state the POTUS has no authority over setting tariffs. This power only lies with Congress.

People need to start ignoring this bullshit. Also, this just reeks of sour grapes from Trump because he’s never been a member of the Hollywood Club.

He’s going to get his ass handed to him by the major studios and the corporate conglomerates that own them.

by Anonymousreply 48May 5, 2025 12:11 PM

R42, he really thinks he’s a king.

by Anonymousreply 49May 5, 2025 12:12 PM

R38, executive orders are not law. The media is guilty of treating each one of these things as a royal proclamation, giving them weight and attention they do not deserve.

An executive order is the statement of intention to act. It is not a law nor does it supersede the law or the Constitution. People need to start ignoring these things until they take a more substantial form.

by Anonymousreply 50May 5, 2025 12:15 PM

[quote]No more foreign plays on Broadway! That guy Shakespeare? Forget it!

I thought there was already a tariff on Othello.

Srsly, surely all Trump had to do was work with California to provide the same kind of incentives other countries do, if the objective is to keep the industry in LA? Mind you, an issue he may not be able to counter as easily is the amount of talent, in front of and especially behind the cameras, that comes from the other English-speaking countries in the first place. Most of them would rather work at home than in La La Land.

by Anonymousreply 51May 5, 2025 12:27 PM

[QUOTE]Srsly, surely all Trump had to do was work with California

Are you srs? Work with California?

by Anonymousreply 52May 5, 2025 2:36 PM

It's all part of the retribution tour. The movie industry has not been good to him ,so he is taking his revenge. Everything is about revenge.

by Anonymousreply 53May 5, 2025 5:19 PM

Apparently the movie "Escape from Alcatraz" with Clint Eastwood was broadcast on the local television channel in Palm Beach last night. So that's how he makes his decisions.

Donald now says that he will meet with studio reps to see what they want tariff-wise:

[quote] Donald Trump told reporters that there will be a meeting with entertainment industry representatives, as he and White House officials took a more cautious tone to his proposal for a 100% tariff on movie imports.

[quote] “I’m not looking to hurt the industry; I want to help the industry,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “We’re going to meet with the industry. I want to make sure they’re happy with it, because we’re all about jobs.” (Deadline.com)

by Anonymousreply 71May 6, 2025 12:50 AM

by Anonymousreply 72May 6, 2025 1:00 AM

I was supposed to do a film in Atlanta last autumn, I was personally invited by the director and a personal request of the lead. 5 months prior to pre-production, they told me that they decamped to London and saved $10 million (on a $75 mil budget). They told the lead that it would cost $200,000 for me to work there (business class, lodging, car service, per diem, and union pay, wihich is 3x what the locals make). And I have been with this production company since its inception for 12 years.

Then I was told London was too expensive to film now- they're going to Ireland (Soulm8te).

The goal is for the Trump camp to throw a barrage of various information out there continuously, some nonsense, some serious, so it becomes next to impossible to react to it. This is the Russia method as well.
