Why men are shaving off their eyelashes

From stopping dust and dirt getting into the eyes to prompting our blink reflex, eyelashes do more than just look pretty.

Which makes it hard to explain the social media trend of men trimming down — or even entirely shaving off — their eyelashes in a bid to look “more masculine.”

Videos posted to TikTok, Instagram and X in recent weeks show men braving blades very close to their eyes, in barber shops from Turkey to New Zealand, in a quest for stubby lashes. While some barbers are seen wielding buzzing electric clippers, others are freestyling with just a pair of hairdressing scissors and, hopefully, a steady hand.

Very short lived trend, I’m assuming

by Anonymousreply 1May 4, 2025 12:23 PM

Ahh, another “trend” the media is trying to convince us is overtaking the country.

Like apparently Lambada

by Anonymousreply 2May 4, 2025 12:36 PM

Dumbest fucking article I ever read, especially using Andrew Tate& "tech bro jock" Mark Zuckerburg as examples.

by Anonymousreply 3May 4, 2025 12:52 PM

I don't even trim my pubes. No way I'm cutting my eyelashes.

by Anonymousreply 4May 4, 2025 1:10 PM

This will end in tears.

Or blood.

Sorry R4. I just saw your signoff as I hit Enter.

by Anonymousreply 6May 4, 2025 1:58 PM

What could go wrong?

by Anonymousreply 7May 4, 2025 2:05 PM

true horror

by Anonymousreply 8May 4, 2025 2:06 PM

Creepy. And you know how it feels when something gets into your eye -- it feels like a log in there. Short-lived indeed.

by Anonymousreply 9May 4, 2025 2:13 PM

Unless there are clear photos of this trend, it's not real.

by Anonymousreply 10May 4, 2025 2:23 PM

The extreme masculinity trend is so laughable. These guys are all insecure and mentally fucked up.

by Anonymousreply 11May 4, 2025 2:36 PM

Weird

I’m sure this is a reaction to JD Vance, who looks like such a preening queen that it’s an embarrassment to the MAGA-men who would ordinarily idolize him.

by Anonymousreply 12May 4, 2025 2:37 PM

R12, yes he is mentioned in the article. So is Trump for his use of makeup.

by Anonymousreply 13May 4, 2025 2:58 PM

The manosphere really is about self-mutilation.

I knew a special needs woman who once observed her sister pluck her eyebrows and decided to copy her. But she got confused, and went and plucked out her eyelashes instead. She had to wear sunglasses out in daylight until her eyelashes grew back, because the sunlight was no longer being filtered through lashes and was much too bright for her eyes to tolerate.

Are the guys who are doing this special needs?

by Anonymousreply 15May 4, 2025 3:42 PM

Whoa! Sounds trendy!

by Anonymousreply 16May 5, 2025 3:35 AM

It doesn't make men look more masculine, it makes them look like freaks. DUH!

by Anonymousreply 17May 5, 2025 3:55 AM

WTF?! Never heard of such a thing.

When I was in high school decades ago I helped out a friend with her art project. She was making a face cast, so she had me lay on a table, slathered my face with Vaseline, covered that with a thick layer of plaster and stuck straws up my nose to breathe through. After the plaster had hardened, she and her friends tried to gently pry the plaster cast off - but it was completely attached. We didn't know what it was stuck to exactly at the time, though, just that it seemed attached to my eyes in some way. It was very scary and painful but we finally managed to yank it off (to my great relief), and when you looked inside the cast, around the rims of both eyes, half stuck in the plaster, were two lines of what looked like black toothbrush bristles where all my eyelashes had been ripped out.

Women in everyday life and in news media now all wear the exaggerated false eyelashes Vegas showgirls of the 1960s wore. These dumb guys think a manly man should be the opposite.

by Anonymousreply 20May 5, 2025 5:42 AM

I had a boyfriend do that after I said they were pretty.
