'Redwood' Sets Early Closing Date on Broadway
Idina Menzel stars in the musical at the Nederlander Theatre.
The Broadway production of Redwood, starring Tony winner Idina Menzel, has announced an early closing date. Previously slated to continue through August 17, the production’s final performance will now be May 18. At the time of closing, it will have played 17 previews and 127 regular performances.
The show was one of 13 productions left empty handed when nominations for this year's Tony Awards were announced yesterday, and becomes Broadway's first casualty of bad luck with the honors.

“While we had of course hoped for a longer run, we're incredibly grateful to have been able to tell this beautiful story for the time we've been given," producers Eva Price and Caroline Kaplan said in a statement. “Redwood has been a labor of love since the very beginning of this process, and we are immensely proud of the incredible work our cast, crew, and creative team have wholeheartedly poured into this production. The themes of connection and community have really resonated with audiences, and we’ll take that with us long after the show closes on Broadway.”
Menzel co-conceived the musical with director, book writer, and co-lyricist Tina Landau. The score features music by Diaz and lyrics by Diaz and Landau. A cast recording is set for a May 13 release, as previously reported.
