Of course not.

I watch Theresa Caputo (the Long Island Medium) on Youtube all the time, and almost always end up in tears. It's very cathartic. I still don't know if I believe in it, though.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 2, 2025 6:45 PM |
Nope, all just grifters preying on grieving people. Sometimes in life, you just need to make peace with the fact that closure isn't always possible.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 2, 2025 6:47 PM |
I'm sorry your friend has fallen for this scam. No, it's not real. Scientists have found no evidence for communication with the dead, and professional magicians like Houdini, Penn and Teller, and James Randi have devoted considerable time and effort exposing the tricks supposed psychics and mediums use. But the grift goes on anyway.
If your dead loved ones can communicate with you, why wouldn't they just do it directly instead of insisting on going through a third party and forcing you to pay ridiculous fees?

I, myself, am an extra large.

Sylvia Browne used to appear on Bay Area channel 5's People Are Talking program. On one show, she predicted there would be an earthquake in Hollister, a town quite a bit to the south of San Francisco. She got the magnitude right, but the earthquake happened one day different from her prediction.

Sylvia Browne told parents "Your missing kid is dead." Turned up alive later.

R4, do the dead want to be pestered by us and our problems? I think of the final act in ‘Our Town,’ the one in the cemetery. The dead who’ve been there a while greet Emily, who has just died. Naturally she’s grief stricken, but they try to make her understand that there’s no point in dwelling on the living. They’ve put all of that behind them and she needs to do that too.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 3, 2025 1:38 PM |
One of the reasons my friend wants to communicate with her mother is that her mother communicated with her right after her death.
But after that, nothing.
So my friend thinks that her mother is now in another dimension, no longer able to communicate directly unless it's through a medium.
I told her she should try to reach her mother by going into a meditative state.

I once asked a much older, wiser, friend (at least 40 years older than me at the time) if "mediums" are real after he took me to see one for fun.
He said, he didn't think they were but he did think there were people who were very good at reading other people and coming up with conclusions that tend to be right out of the thinnest of air. He also thought they could be good for closure for some people if they have those kinds of questions.
That particular medium was freakishly accurate and I said absolutely nothing to them intentionally.
However, she must have been really good at reading my micro expressions and taking guesses based upon what she could see and pick up about me just from looking at me, what I was wearing, how I smiled, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 3, 2025 2:58 PM |
My late mother had a good crack about mediums and life after death beliefs. Usually these stories are cases where the dead person was 'assisting' the supplicant in some way. Mom says "well that's just great, even when I'm dead I don't get a break from people and their problems?"
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 3, 2025 3:02 PM |
Does anybody here have a grandmother who died?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 3, 2025 3:05 PM |
R16: I had a similar experience where the woman said something really strange at the time, but later proved completely valid, would have to have been one HELL of a coincidence had she been "guessing"!

I'm seeing a name with an M. M? Or maybe an S. Could be an S. Has anyone here lost someone who had an M or an S in their name?
Oh I can see you really loved them. What? They caused you pain? Yes I can see that.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 3, 2025 3:08 PM |
Lol R18.
"I'm getting the letter 'B' does that mean anything? 'B' or 'D'? No? Why don't you just TELL me the name of your dead granny!"
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 3, 2025 3:09 PM |
R18 - yes, I'm getting a male or some sort of father figure that passed - it feels sudden, like an accident or a heart attack or stroke? Anyone in this room of 800 people have a father or someone who was a father or a father figure pass suddenly?
But sometimes they do latch on to something really particular that makes you wonder.
I actually have watched a lot of those twink Tyler Henry shows and his readings are really specific and interesting.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 3, 2025 3:12 PM |
R19, same with me. That's why I asked my friend. Everything that medium said turned out to be accurate including some stuff that no one would have known. Also everything she predicted would happen did happen and she said very specific things, like, "you're going to get the opportunity to travel to Buenos Aires in the next two months for a project," and that's exactly what happened out of nowhere.

I lost what little respect I had for a queeny new-age acquaintance back in the 90s when he became enthralled by the charlatan medium JZ Knight, born Judy Hampton. “JZ” built a career (and a literal cult compound in WA state) claiming to channel “Ramtha.” She claims Ramtha is/was an ancient “Lemurian” warrior from 35,000 years ago who fought the “Atlanteans.” (these are not real things.) Oddly when Ramtha emanates from the mouth of Ms Knight, he speaks English in an odd faux-Indian accent.
It got funny when some German woman tried to get in on it and said she can channel Ramtha too. JZ sued saying “Ramtha is my personal property and trademark” and the defense was like “Oh ok so then you made him up, yes?” She lost the case.

Somehow it’s always a spirit reaching out from beyond the grave to let us know they’re at peace, rather than a murder victim identifying their killer.
It’s a shameless grift.

I'm getting the name Donna - did your dad have an affair on your mom with her best friend Donna?
And I'm hearing the words 'gaudy and tacky living room' - did you recently redecorate your living room?
A female figure is coming forward and saying you look fat in that wedding dress - does that make sense to you?

I've been going to psychics since I was in high school (there was a metaphysical store a few blocks from me back in the late 80s and I was curious) some of them are accurate and some are full of it.
The most accurate, scarily so, are mother and daughter team Cheryl and Kimm from Touching Souls. They're on Facebook and they have a website where you can do phone calls or Skype.
They're mediums and they spoke with my parents, friends, and grandparents. Everything they said was accurate and told me things no one could have known.
What I like about them is they don't ask leading questions, just let the spirits talk. And they're not a rip-off for legitimately talking to the other side. I was honestly shocked about all my family drama they (my dead relatives) talked about.

My sister and brother brought my mom to a Boston area psychic who is/was very popular. My dad had died in 2013 and my mom still grieves. My mom is a staunch Catholic and the church is against that stuff but nobody follows that anymore.
The psychic did pick my brother out by name and start coughing. My dad had lung issues but wasn’t really coughing as he could not breathe. I am an atheist and do not believe in an afterlife so I found it to be hooey.

Actually, r34, after my bf passed, I contacted a medium who told he was pissed at his family for donating his clothes to goodwill and that he was laughing at me for burning a steak(which i had done less then a week prior) but still proud of me for trying. She said he told her I slept crazily and that he plays with my feet, and over a failed relationship, after him, he said, "What were you thinking?"

Do spirits mind their own business when you're doing 'self-love'?
Seems random - they are the for certain things but not others?
I would be so bored if I was dead watching other people live. Doesn't sound like the way you want to spend your eternity. And then what? You join your loved ones when you die? Worst Eternal Thanksgiving EVER.
Feels good but c'mon. It doesn't make any sense. And spirits are always so shy and skittish - why? Where are the loud and outgoing, chatty spirits/ghosts?

A handful of high-profile Dutch politicians quietly consult a medium in The Hague by the name of Mrs. D. Her "visions" are very concrete and rather prosaic (for example, 'Should I accept this promotion/job transfer?' 'Should I submit proposal X now or next summer?'). One or two of them won't make any major decisions without seeing her first. They would become complete laughing stocks if this ever came out.
Back in the 1990s, a couple I was friends with at the time (then living in Dublin together) temporarily broke up and were separated for about three months before reconciling. On the recommendation of another friend in our circle, they had each individually gone to see a medium during the separation. She told them each separately that they had broken up with their partner but that they would get back together and would move to Barcelona together (she was always very specific about geographic locations). This really did end up happening, and the 'medium' had never met them before, either individually or as a couple, and she couldn't have known about their plans (which pre-dated the break-up) to relocate to Spain.
This same devoutly Catholic Irish lady (she didn't accept money, instead requesting that you bring her a pint of Guinness from the pub around the corner--no joke) was known to hide the religious paraphernalia in her house before receiving people she sensed would be offended by that sort of thing.
I wouldn't waste my money on a medium myself, but know several people who swear by them and appear to put complete trust in them.

On the one hand: I used to attend a weekly non-denominational Sunday spiritual service when I lived in Honolulu in the late 80’s, led by Arthur. (I can’t remember his last name.) At the end of each session, he’d give psychic messages to random people in the group of 30 people or so. One time, I took my amiable straight roommate, and Arthur gave him an accurate message from his dead uncle, which freaked him out.
On the other hand: a woman I used to work with in San Diego, whose husband was a Marine frequently on deployment, used to go to different psychics regularly. One of them, an older man with an eye for the ladies, asked her if she ever cheated on her husband. She quickly responded, “You’re the psychic. Don’t you know?”

I've posted this before, a few years ago. Back in the day when we had landlines and hordes of dial-a-psychics I went against my better judgment and dialed a psychic. A woman with a pleasant voice took the call. Since it was something like $100 dollars a minute I was very terse and said simply 'tell me something". She didn't flinch. "I see you surrounded by books." I thought that was pretty general and responded with a desultory 'well I like books'. Then she blew my mind. "Did you just get back from Hawaii?" WTF I practically yelled into the receiver 'how in the hell did you know that????' She just chuckled and said you're going again next year." I did, but that could be because she planted the idea.
The only specific thing I asked after this was if I made a mistake breaking up with my partner. She said no, you just jumped the gun a little, which was my thought too. When I ended the call and was ruminating on all that passed I noticed the stacks of books that I had yet to find a bookcase for. You could say I was literally sounded buy books. Pretty amazing coincidences and as someone open to the idea that some people can read minds, I hadn't been thinking about books or Hawaii at all.

Yes, they really exist (I've been to a few of them in my lifetime) and the best way to find them is through 'word of mouth' and 'recommendations' from people she trusts. Forget the celebrity mediums on TV or at events. And she needs to know the difference between a 'medium' (one who communicates with the dead) and a psychic (who generally does not).

Sylvia Browne was full of shit and got caught multiple times lying (see video below).
I also read that before Teresa Caputo does her shows, she plants family members in the lines waiting to get in and in the seats in the audience before she goes onstage. The family members listen to audience members talking about what they want to ask Teresa ("I want to know if Johnny has forgiven me," "I want to know if Aunt Edna is with Uncle George," etc.) The family members then text Teresa with the details, including where the audience members are sitting and what they look like).
Then when Teresa comes onstage, she'll say something like, "Over here, on the right side of the audience, did someone have an aunt who recently passed away?" Then she'll say something, "She's telling me she's at peace and reunited with your uncle."
It's all complete bullshit.

Remember that John Edward medium? He was really popular in the 90s and early 2000s and even had his own show.
I used to watch him, and he was so full of shit. He'd come out and say something like, "Someone's coming through. Is there anyone here who had a father who recently passed whose name starts with a 'J'? John, Joe, Joey, Joseph..." Then some schmuck in the audience would raise their hand and say, "My father Joseph died last year!" I mean, the odds that someone would have a dead dad whose name started with 'J' would be pretty high.

I will share an experience I had about 25+ years ago, when I was going to mediums and psychics around once a year.
My mother died unexpectedly at a young age in 1997. We all took it very hard, my dad especially - he was lost without her. Every Saturday from Spring - Fall, he would go to the florist, buy a beautiful bouquet of flowers, and leave it at her grave. He never missed a Saturday, no matter the weather. He spent a lot of money on those flowers.
In May, 2000 I went to a medium that someone (a customer) I trusted highly recommended. She was about twenty minutes away from me, in a small office building (not a house or storefront). Her price at the time was rather reasonable, so I decided to make an appointment. Keep in mind the customer knew nothing about my personal life, so there was no way she could 'call ahead' and tip the medium off.
I show up to my appointment and we introduce ourselves, and as soon as I sat down she says "You're mother is here with you and she's upset about something she wants you to take care of." Now this woman had no idea if my mother was alive or dead - we only exchanged pleasantries and introduced ourselves by name at that point; she asked me no questions and I didn't offer any info in those few minutes.
Then she starts: "Tell your father to stop visiting her grave every weekend with flowers. She's showing me beautiful flowers 'upside down', which means to stop bringing them - she doesn't want them. She's saying he's wasting his money - she says she never liked bouquets of flowers while she was alive and doesn't want them now at the cemetery! She also says for him to stop going every week. Once in a while is fine. "
At that point, I honestly almost fell out of my chair. This woman couldn't be more correct. My mom was not one who liked fresh cut flowers - she enjoyed seeing them grown in our garden in the yard. She never cut them and brought them in, she didn't like 'floral arrangements' in a vase or around the house. For her birthdays, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, Anniversary - she never, ever wanted flowers. She always found them to be a 'waste of money because they don't last long', as she always said.
The woman continued with the reading for the next forty-five minutes or so, telling me more and more from my mother; things this woman could never have 'guessed' on her own, nor 'picked up' from info I gave her, as I didn't speak a single word. There were a few small-scale 'mysteries' in our family that were never explained (nor questioned) while my mother was alive, and some of these were finally explained (such as ' your mother is telling me to tell you the reason she didn't talk to her older sister for the past twenty years is because...' ) She was the real deal. I never returned to her the following year, as my customer told me she had relocated to another state (and didn't do phone readings - you had to be in her presence). If she hadn't moved, I probably would have stuck with her for my annual reading.
When I got home, I told my dad about the reading. He was always 'indifferent' to my going to the psychics and mediums, and was rather skeptical about believing. However, he believed this reading and the message from my mom. He immediately stopped going to the cemetery every Saturday (he tapered off to once a month, and eventually 'special occasions' such as birthdays / holidays, and never brought another flower.

I mean, the odds that someone would have a dead dad whose name started with 'J' would be pretty high.
I always thought he was one of the more honest ones. If you re-watch some of his shows again, you will see he would get more exact - especially if the circumstances were tragic. For example, once he connected with an audience member about the death of a father whose name was 'Joseph', he would get into detail such as 'he's saying it's not your fault, he wanted to end his life for a very long time and that's why he bought the gun...' rather the general 'he says he's happy in the afterlife'.

I think the famous psychic who is very "general" is Teresa Caputo/Long Island Medium. I watched her show for maybe a season, but then stopped because she was the kind of medium that would do the "did you have an Aunt that passed away recently? She wants you to know she's at peace and happy" kind of shit.
Tyler Henry gets into specifics, but I'm not at ALL convinced that a) he doesn't know who is coming to visit him (or he's going to visit), or even "doesn't know" who this famous person is, and b) that his staff doesn't research significant events in people's lives and dig for obscure details to "give evidence."
Yes, I believe some people have psychic ability and sense things they wouldn't/couldn't know. However, there are a lot of bad apples/shysters/cons out there, too.

I went to see George Anderson who is in Commack NY. He has written books and one is Lessons of the Light. It was very interesting to say the least! All of my family who had died came through and they knew what was going on in our family and my life. My father warned me about envy and jealousy by two of my siblings who I suspected as much. My mother who couldn't stand animals told me our 4 legged friends are with us. I was taken back by that until I realized my dog had to be put down a few weeks after my encounter with them. She told me that to comfort me.

I think its ignorant to think just because todays scientists say they cant prove, that they dont exist. If y told somebody 100 yrs ago that it wud be possible to use a device to see africa from your living room or See a friend 1000's miles away you wouldnt have believed it. Maybe a device Will make it possible to heighten a part of oir brain to communicate with the dead and some people dont need that device. I asked my mom for a white feather and i said please dont place it close to anything, like a pillow or ill talk myself into disbelieving. I went to the funeral home and when i returnef home, dead centre in the lounge was a white feather.; 3 feet from where i asked for it. Never b4 or since has there ever been a feather. 2ndly my dad died and youtube on my phone went off in my pocket. It shouldn't do that as the screen locks after seconds. Of non use. I took it out and it was playing clips of my dads beloved Marilyn Monroe. He worshipped her. I pit my phone back in my pocket and it did it again; another Marilyn clip. It kept happening that day but never since..plus never b4 that had i youtubed Marilyn from my youtube account. Im open to these being debunked, so go ahead, explain.. As a kid my mom always said i was psychic; i think of myself as a lazy psychic as when an event occurs i realise Thats Why it was on my brain. Recently i kept thinking about 2 people a childhood friends dad and a different childhood friend.. the dad died but id have missed the funeral only the other childhood friend texted me, 3 hours b4 the funeral. I was in a cab to get a train to another city and i told him to take me back home and i made the funeral. Ive lots of these very bizarre happenings. I couldnt find my friends grave, 40 mins i looked. It began to rain so i said out loud, Jan, dont let me leave without finding u. Then tue only other person stood up, way across the graveyard and i cut tru and adked her if she knew where those buried in 1995 wud be. We chatted for 10 mins and without hope i decided to leave when i noticed i was exactly at Jans grave...at the foot of it, where youd syand if u visited it. Another story, my friend moved to my city only to give his mom his new addtess, after viewing lots of places; and it was the Exact house his parents had lived in 30 yrs earlier for a year. We definitely have senses and talents we dont know how to harness...yet...maybe some do?

I’ve gone to two who had 5 star reviews including some impressed family members, but both failed to impress me and gave 1 star but it should have been 0 since they got nothing right.

Like astrologers, they are for entertainment purposes only.

I’m back again to prove you unbelievers wrong. I’m posting at R81 as I foresaw I would because I had 81 corn flakes in my cereal bowl.
Further proof (without reading any posts since my last time here at R58) someone on this thread will have posted about books and Hawaii.

I've done it one time, and she had some kind of ability for sure. She called out things that no one else knew about; that she couldn't have simply guessed. Very specific things, including specific words and language I used with deceased relatives. It was incredibly reassuring to me, and remains so to this day. What she knew about me couldn't have been faked.

I’m a skeptic more or less, but when I was 27 I went to a friend’s party and her gay and psychic cousin was in the backyard offering tarot/fortune sort of readings.
He held my hand and smiled and said “Oh dear. Who’s the Sagittarius?” I had just been dumped by a gorgeous but troubled soul… with a birthday in early December.
Then he said, well, I will eventually find true love… but not until after I turn 40. And that I should just enjoy the process , have some fun, make some mistakes, grow…
I was only 27 and was not interested in hearing that!
Yet that’s exactly what happened. Met him at age 42 and now we’ve been together 15 years, married for 12.

I believe genuine psychic ability does exist. It's just extremely rare. Like one in a billion.

I didn't get a chance to read the entire thread, but has the X-tra Large joke already been made?

The dead see you naked and when you are getting plowed by all those randos from Grindr. How deplorable! Thank God my medium never mentions this when I am speaking to my late Dad or Grandma.

Well, we got a down-sized version of it.

One psychic who I got a reading from who was full of shit was Dannion Brinkley, who wrote Saved By The Light (which was also made into a TV movie starring Eric Roberts, who played him).
Anyway, he told me I should stay in the medical field and work with old people and hospice WRONG!I was already doing that and was burnt out. I never went back.
He said my niece will be a singer on American Idol and become famous. WRONG! She loves science and is going to college to be a pharmacist.
He also said a lot of other bullshit that was wrong. Him and his grifter wife have written books, are "intuitive" speakers, and used to have these spiritual cruises. Now they're asking for donations to build a spiritual center.

[quote]m*surrounded by books* sheesh

Tyler Henry, the biggest young homosexual in Hollywood, goes to celebrities' homes to give them readings and pretends he has no idea who they are.
Give me a fucking break.

I once worked with a woman who went to a medium at least three or four times a year, and she swore by this woman. She finally convinced me to go see her.
So I show up at this woman's house and was immediately wary, since her place looked like a borderline hoarder's domicile, with boxes and papers all piled up everywhere. She had asked me to bring something personal with me prior to the meeting, like a family heirloom or something that had sentimental value to me. I brought my late father's wedding ring (and must say I was initially worried she was going to take it and never give it back and head to the pawn shop after my reading).
She grabs the ring and closes her eyes and rubs it and starts doing this very dramatic deep breathing thing. Then she starts telling me things about myself that could apply to anyone. "I see you work very hard and are a perfectionist. I see you've had relationships that didn't work out the way you wanted them to. I see you're sad at times." Then at one point, she says, "Your last relationship wasn't healthy, and SHE disrespected you. But it happened for a reason. You've learned from it, and I see you meeting a beautiful WOMAN this year and settling down and getting married within the next year."
I laughed out loud and said, "I'm gay. I've never been in a relationship with a woman. Thank you for your time." Then I made sure to get my dad's ring back and left.
When I saw my co-worker the next day, I told her what happened and that her medium was a quack. My co-worker said, "Oh, maybe she was picking up on someone else's energy." I said, "It was just me and her in her filthy house." Then my co-worker said, "There may have been spirits among you that were interfering with her reading." I said, "Or maybe she's just full of shit." Then my co-worker said, "That's the problem. You're not a believer. She couldn't get through because you put up a spiritual shield."
People who believe in these fraudsters will do anything to justify their being suckered. It's not unlike MAGAts who believe everything Trump says, even though they know deep inside it's all bullshit.

My mother went every summer to a visiting medium camp. Out of that year's lineup was a guy named Frank, who had a good reputation and was GAY. She giggled to all her girlfriends about it. This interested me, and I asked if I could get a reading from him. I was 11 years old, but you had to be, I think, at least 15, still, she said she would call and ask. low and behold, I got an appointment for a reading with Frank, he said I was special and had my own gifts, which now I know meant his little homosexual spidey senses were tingling without even seeing me. The day came, and I know I asked all sorts of stupid kid questions, especially about getting a girlfriend. he kind of looked at me like"girlllll" and said Why are you even asking.

Yes indeed, we too use "cookies." Take a look at our privacy/terms or if you just want to see the damn site without all this bureaucratic nonsense, click ACCEPT. Otherwise, you'll just have to find some other site for your pointless bitchery needs.
