Tennessee Doctors Can Now Refuse Care to LGBTQ Patients

Not just a fringe bill going no where but a passed bill that was signed into law. I expect we will see lots and lots more of this or worse.

I’m a Tennessean. I have a gay friend that is a psychiatrist who was in hot water for not referring an influx of young trans people, particularly young women, onto the path to gender reassignment.

He says many show very little interest in getting to the root of these issues. They just say they’re trans and expect to be passed right through. He’s taken a lot of heat for being a “gate keeper.”

I do think there is potential harm with medically transitioning children. Puberty blockers to block natural puberty and delay it until adulthood has harms (some known harms and potentially, even likely, unknown harms). It certainly shouldn't be allowed outside of clinical trials at the very least. That kind of experimentation wouldn't be allowed for other conditions outside of a clinical trial. Looking at the numbers given for the Travistock Child Gender Identity Clinic from multiple sources online, I don't see how anyone with any kind of medical background would not have concerns. As far as the Republicans go, they saw this as something they could latch onto for votes and blew it out of proportion for their benefit. Trans or no trans, I will NEVER vote for a Republican.

Everyone realizes that the actual number of transgender people in any society is vanishingly small. It's the changing ideas about how sex and gender should be viewed and taught in schools (as promoted by activists), and whether birth sex or gender identity should take precedence under the law and in public life, that is the subject of the backlash. Every society should decide for itself whether the largest number of its people benefit if biological sex takes precedence, or if gender identity takes precedence. It's a political, legal, and philosphical discussion that is currently occupying people in the UK and elsewhere.
