I want to see him spanked

Benito Skinner looks 35 and he's playing a college student.

Kind of humiliating for Adam DiMarco to go from “White Lotus” to playing a straight dumb bro in a college coming out comedy.

When I remember how incredibly sexy his well-developed legs are, I wonder why he isn’t starring.

Benito Skinner is moving from TikTok to your TV. The comedian, who rose to fame on social media thanks to his flawless impressions of the Kardashians, created and stars in the upcoming Prime Video series Overcompensating. After teasing the series a month ago, the full trailer was just released.

Now, Skinner isn’t just impersonating celebrities online — he’s appearing alongside them in a college coming-of-age story loosely based on his own life. Charli XCX, Megan Fox and even Connie Britton all make cameos in the trailer.

Skinner took to Instagram on Tuesday to share his excitement. “This is a story about a girl named Lucky,” Skinner wrote in a post sharing the trailer. “OVERCOMPENSATING IS OUT MAY 15!!!! I LOVE YOU LFGGGGGGGGGG.”

He’s not the only social media star branching out into traditional media. Skinner, who has 1.3 million followers on Instagram and 1.4 million on TikTok, follows in the footsteps of stars like Saturday Night Live’s Jane Wickline, who also got her start in internet sketch videos, and even Addison Rae, who appeared in movies like He’s All That and Thanksgiving while also branching out into pop music — including sharing the stage with Charli XCX at Coachella.

Here’s everything to know about Overcompensating.

What is ‘Overcompensating’ about?

The A24 and Jonah Hill-produced show stars Skinner as closeted gay man and former high school football player Benny, who is navigating his freshman year of college — making new friends, grappling with his sexuality and, occasionally, getting words of encouragement from Megan Fox, who appears to him on his dorm room poster.

“The tapestry of college made it so easy to be like, ‘We’re at a party, this is sick, I’m having the best time of my life, I’m in love,’” Skinner previously told Deadline. “Then you’re completely heartbroken in your dorm room, eating ramen and crying. That feels like college to me — the highs of the drug and the comedown.”

Is ‘Overcompensating’ based on a true story?

At the core of the series is Benny’s friendship with Carmen, played by writer and newcomer Wally Baram, who is described in the logline for the show as “a high school outsider on a mission to fit in at all costs.”

That relationship, Skinner shared with Deadline, was inspired by his real-life friendship with a woman who helped him come out as gay.

“I think it is that core relationship between gay men and women that really inspired me,” he said. “It can be funny, but I feel like it really saved my life and changed my life.”

Who stars in ‘Overcompensating’?

In addition to Skinner and Baram, the main cast is rounded out by comedian Mary Beth Barone and The White Lotus Season 2 star Adam DiMarco. Filling out the cast is a slew of familiar faces like fellow White Lotus alums Connie Britton and Lukas Gage, ’90s icon James Van Der Beek, Bottoms’ Kaia Gerber and Twin Peaks star Kyle MacLachlan.

There’s a slew of ultra-famous guest stars: Fox appears in the trailer, as does Saturday Night Live’s Bowen Yang and his Las Culturistas podcast partner, actor Matt Rogers.

Plus, there’s Charli XCX, who appears in the trailer and is also producing original music for the series.

Skinner told Deadline he approached the “360” singer at a party and asked her to collaborate on the project, which has been in the works since 2020.

“She was like, ‘Send me the script, babe,’” Skinner explained. “I sent her the script, and she signed on to do the music on a Monday.”

Where can we watch ‘Overcompensating’?

Overcompensating hits Prime Video on May 15.

The show is a total disappointment

by Anonymousreply 9May 18, 2025 10:54 AM

Why's that, R9?

I haven't watched it yet, but I'm excited about it.

by Anonymousreply 10May 18, 2025 10:56 AM

It has a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. I'll check it out tonight.

Naked, round, protruding buttocks are scattered throughout.

by Anonymousreply 12May 18, 2025 1:16 PM

R9 is correct: It’s shit.

Are we still doing coming out stories in 2025?

by Anonymousreply 14May 18, 2025 4:39 PM

I finished watching it this week and liked it. It hit a little close to home for me. I was a high school jock, had girlfriends but no sex other than blow jobs, didn’t have any sexual encounter with guys until I was a junior in college and didn’t come out until I was 28. Yes it was 30+ years ago and I realize times have changed so much but the denial and confusion must still be there for gay kids.

by Anonymousreply 15May 18, 2025 11:22 PM

Did Ben Platt cast this? The main characters look so old for what are meant to be college students. And the love interest is so average looking, I guess Skinner didn't want anyone competing for attention.

Unfunny and bad acting. Skinner should stick to TikTok.

by Anonymousreply 16May 19, 2025 12:40 PM

Unless he's attending Brigham Young University, this is a ridiculous premise in 2025.

by Anonymousreply 17May 19, 2025 12:43 PM

r17 It seems to be set in the early 2010s, but there's nothing that specifically states that.

by Anonymousreply 18May 19, 2025 12:46 PM

r18 even in the early 2010s it would've been ridiculous. You'd have to go back to the 90s or the early 2000s at the absolute latest for this kind of shit.

Benito Skinner brings heart and humor to new series, "Overcompensating" (CBS Mornings)

Loved it. Hope there's another season planned. It was not unlike many of my experiences with coming out as a Freshman away at college. But that was in 1980 when we didn't have cell phones, texting, or computers, which, I think would have made the whole process of coming out and hooking up so much easier.

Instead, there were carefully written, sometimes coded notes and love letters slipped under dorm room doors. It was heartbreaking to crush on charming guys who turned out to be straight, but so exciting to discover when someone felt the same about you. *Sigh*. Memories of giggly, thrilling, surreptitious sex and romance when no one else but the two of you knew. Although not recommended, being closeted did have its moments. Am still in touch with one of those guys, some 45 years later.

We walked so he could run.

Mary Beth Barone, who plays his sister Grace, is 34 and looks 10 years older than him. She doesn't look bad for her age, but playing a college student is quite a stretch.

by Anonymousreply 23June 2, 2025 4:00 PM

R19, that's not true, especially for jocks. Why do you think there are currently no out gay athletes in any major sport?

by Anonymousreply 24June 2, 2025 4:05 PM

I agree with almost every criticism here, and yet I still enjoyed it. It was just light enough for me to not care about the obvious flaws.

by Anonymousreply 25June 2, 2025 5:19 PM

This series has stayed with me for days.

Watching it dislodged so many deeply buried memories of what I usually think of as a traumatic, depressing, and anxiety-ridden first year of college while living on campus 45 years ago and being closeted, but damn, I had some good times. What I remember most was taking mushrooms and LSD, and the long conversations with the few close friends I made. And the "naughty" secret sex. It was a small, somewhat elite, very liberal college, but being gay back then was still taboo.

After two years, I ended up transferring to San Francisco State, where I lived and learned happily ever after.

by Anonymousreply 26June 3, 2025 6:02 AM

I was won over by the first episode’s running joke about Amanda Knox.
