Pittsburgh Pirates baseball fan falls 20 feet after tumbling over stadium railing

The Pittsburgh Pirates fan who fell more than 20 feet onto the field at PNC Park has been identified as Kavan Markwood, a 20-year-old former college football player.

Markwood was at the center of a haunting scene Wednesday in the seventh inning of the Pirates' game against the Chicago Cubs after he tumbled over a railing in right field, flipped multiple times and landed on the warning track. He was motionless and shirtless as EMS and the teams' trainers attended to him, and was eventually taken off the field on a stretcher.

Witnesses said he had been excited about the Pirates' rally and had taken his shirt off and poured beer on himself before his fall. It is unclear how he procured a beer at 20 years old.

R1 His jersey should read ‘Free-Wheeling”

It looks like his seat ejected him.

Same thing happened to a Texas Rangers fan. He was leaning over to catch a foul ball thrown by Josh Hamilton.

I remember Lucy fans falling off the third mezzanine at the Music Hall in excitement after she sang If He Walked Into my Life. Nobody could decide if it were a tragedy or a blessing.

He's apparently awake.

[quote] The 20-year-old man who fell to warning track at a Pirates game takes his first steps since accident

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The 20-year-old man who fell from the top of a 21-foot-high wall onto the warning track at PNC Park during a Pittsburgh Pirates game last week took his first steps Monday but still has “a long way to go” in his recovery.

Kavan Markwood slipped off a railing and onto the field during the seventh inning of Pittsburgh’s 4-3 win over the Chicago Cubs last Wednesday.

Jennifer Phillips, the organizer of a GoFundMe page for Markwood, said in an update Monday that his recovery is “a slow slow process, but seeing him up and moving was a huge win and definitely lifted everyone’s spirits.”

Markwood was admitted to the trauma center at Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition after the accident.

“He still has a long way to go — he’s dealing with a broken neck, clavicle, and back so there are plenty of obstacles ahead,” wrote Phillips, who once taught Markwood. “But he’s showing real strength, and we’re staying hopeful for a smooth recovery. This will also require plenty of rest and following instructions from the great doctors, nurses and staff at the hospital.”

As of Monday night, the GoFundMe had raised nearly $41,000, more than 90% towards its initial goal of $45,000.

Pittsburgh Public Safety, which includes Pittsburgh Police and EMS, has labeled the incident an accident.

Kavan Markwood, the 20-year-old who fell over the top of a 21-foot outfield wall at PNC Park on Wednesday, April 30, has broken his silence.

Markwood shared during an interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review published on Wednesday, May 7, that he has not watched footage of his fall.

The baseball fan fell as he cheered a Pirates’ go-ahead double in the seventh inning. In a recently released video from the game, Markwood jumps in celebration of Andrew McCutchen’s hit when gravity takes over as he pitches forward over the railing.

While he said he was "alright," he told the news outlet that he "can't really sleep" and has a "lot of back pain." Although he expects to be released from the hospital in about a week, Markwood still has a lot of injuries he has to recover from.

During a press conference also on Wednesday, Allegheny General Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. Al Philp said Markwood has sustained injuries to his skull, brain, spine, both sides of his ribs, and his lungs, according to CBS Pittsburgh.

Although Philp noted that it will take time for Markwood to heal, he said he has "progressed really, really well."

"He's at a point now where he's off the breathing machine, he's out of the intensive care unit, and he's preparing to move to the next step, which will be physical therapy rehab. Seeing him recover so quickly has really been gratifying, frankly, ahead of schedule from what we would have anticipated given the real severity of his injuries," Philp continued.

Speaking about his injuries to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Markwood said he felt like he had "broken everything."

Tribune-Review, Markwood's parents both died young. His father, Scott Markwood, died at the age of 37 in 2014, while his mother, Angela Rachelle Lawson, died in 2023 at 44.

"It’s a slow, slow process, but seeing him up and moving was a huge win and definitely lifted everyone’s spirits," she added, noting that he had "plenty of obstacles ahead."

"But he’s showing real strength, and we’re staying hopeful for a smooth recovery. This will also require plenty of rest and following instructions from the great doctors, nurses and staff at the hospital," she said.

As of this writing, the campaign has raised over $51,000 of its $55,000 goal.

He’s an orphan? Ugh - I hope he has support.

He has a girlfriend and her family seems to be helping him. His physical strength helped him recover. My big, weight lifting cousin survived a car accident that would have killed a smaller, weaker person.

A man, drinking illegally, takes a drunken 20 ft header after ripping off his shirt and pouring beer all over himself.

This is not tragic.

He is world class stupid.

Where has it been said or even implied that he was drinking? Did I miss something?

[quote] Where has it been said or even implied that he was drinking? Did I miss something?

It didn't.

The article questioned how he "procured" a beer, since he was only 20 years old.

He's not even supposed to be holding alcohol, since he's underage.

R20 Got it, thanks. Missed that somehow.
