At a recent gathering the subject came up and I was surprised how many people never use these services or don't even understand them. My late model Subaru has a pretty great cruise control system where it uses cameras to monitor the distance and speed of the vehicle in front of me and adjusts my speed accordingly, automatically slowing down or speeding up. I think it's great!
Driving with Cruise Control Type Services - Do You Use Them?

I recently drove cross country and back. Between adaptive cruise control and the technology that keeps your car centered within your lane, it was a breeze. And I've really come to rely on the warning light built into the side view mirrors to warn of cars in your blind spot.

I use cruise control mine daily in suburban driving.

People who do not use cruise control on long highways, etc. are mentally deficient.

Bitch, you sound just like my grandma! LOL...I too, am very surprised that so many of my friends who have purchased higher-end cars only understand a few options and amenities. After owning a 2025 Buick Envision for 5 months, my close friend didn't know how to use the navigation system or how to get Apple CarPlay going, but she knew that she could change the ambient lighting on her dashboard to purple. She was so proud of herself. Poor thing.

I occasionally used the cruise control in the first car I had that featured this option, but never since over the many years & several new cars.

Constantly.

Cruise control is great, as well as simple--really makes a trip more relaxing. The sensing to keep you in your lane is often dangerous, esp. when the lane shifting is aggressive--the cameras don't do so well at night, in the rain or in lane shift situations where you have road construction and they get confused by the rapid shifts or the presence of old and new lane markers.

Don't have it, don't want it.
I love to drive. If it were up to me, I'd have a stable full of cars and motorcycles, like a regular Jay Leno. I trained to be a truck driver in the Army, and I got my German driver's license as well as my military one. In fact, I was the first person in my company to pass the German driver's test on the first try. One hundred questions and you could only miss nine. Yes, the Germans are crazy drivers, but they really know how to drive. You can't fuck up there or you'll get killed -- and it will be your fault.
I tell people I [italic]really[/italic] learned to drive on the Autobahn. I actually blew the engine of my poor old 1963 Volkswagen there, just trying to keep up with traffic. Poor little bug!
I refuse to give up control of my vehicle to all these noises, bells, and whistles. Even if I could afford a vehicle like that, I wouldn't want one.
Learn to drive or GTF off the road. Thank you.

I hate adaptive cruise control. It’s my right as an American to judge how close I can be to the car in front of me before I slow down dammit!

Does anyone know? When your adaptive cruise control slows your vehicle down due to traffic ahead, does it also operate your car’s brake lights?

I would imagine so. On my Subaru when the car slows down the brake pedal depresses just like my foot is on it. It would also be extremely dangerous if it didn't work that way.

I have both adaptive cruise control and lane centering technology. I guess that I have been driving for so long that I have "trust" issues with using the technology. I guess I feel like I need to do the driving and not the car.

I don't like the lane monitoring system so I shut it off, but I do like the speed control which is especially useful in sluggish highway traffic or even on an open highway to keep from speeding.

Have adaptive cruise control in my car. Really like it, as it slows the car down automatically when a slower moving vehicle gets in front of you. Resumes preset speed when you get around that car. Unusable on expressways as the CC almost stops the car when a vehicle is stopped at a left-turn lane. Supposedly CC can be used in stop-and-go traffic. I have no sense of this actually working and don't want to experiment with it. Also it's very slow to start moving the car from a stop.
Had rain-sensing wipers on a 2000 Lesabre Limited (fancy version, the Custom is like an Impala). Really liked them as you almost never had to adjust the wiper speed. This feature is working its way down the food chain and is available on certain Hondas and VWs.
Rep 10: Have confirmed that my car (electric) puts its brake lights on when I lift off the accelerator. Drive mainly at night through construction zones with signs with reflective paint on them.
The car can steer itself on the highway, but it seems a little sluggish keeping on course and makes a lot of corrections.

Tesla driver in the highway lane next to me apparently had its version on during a lane closure traffic slowdown.
He was asleep.

I never liked it, not because I'm a Luddite but because one reason I dislike driving is that any mode of transportation makes me sleepy. I get tired very easily when driving, even with a window open for fresh air, and have to stop often to stretch my legs a bit. I don't trust that freeing up my attention on some level won't encourage me to be less alert. (I never have fallen asleep driving, but do feel sleepy. I never enjoyed driving and try to avoid driving long distances or on highways where it's easier to let my mind wander too much or fall drowsy.)

The following function is great. The lane keeping is fun but not always helpful. I don’t like the binging and bonging of the warning system.

I have lane centering and I keep it turned off. It can be a little disconcerting when the steering wheel pulls. I use adaptive cruise sometimes, but have also spaced out a bit only to realize I’ve slowed down to follow a Sunday driver for miles.

R10 are you fucking serious?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 4, 2025 4:06 PM |
I don't own a car, so every rental now requires a scan of the various adaptive devices. The lane monitoring always gets turned off. The various noises are annoying as there is no comprehensive list and it's difficult to prioritize them. The tire pressure thing also isn't usually helpful---pressure is affected by air temperature and usually the only time you need to add air is in the most bitter cold

Tesla's Full Self-Driving system is a mess. It either drives like a teenager who just got a license or an old lady.
