Lots of the big stars didn’t get nominations—maybe because ticket sales are just down for those shows

by Anonymousreply 2May 1, 2025 3:58 PM

I was surprised Idina didn’t get a nom—she’s actually fantastic in that show

by Anonymousreply 3May 1, 2025 3:59 PM

I saw Idina Menzel in 'Redwood' at its world premiere at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego. It's a good show, but in the end, it's rather forgettable. The show won't last without Idina in it.

by Anonymousreply 4May 1, 2025 4:02 PM

I think centering Gypsy’s nominations on the performances is exactly right. It’s not sold on elaborate set pieces.

So I guess the question is will they only award Audra? Because Joy Woods would absolutely deserve to win as well.

by Anonymousreply 5May 1, 2025 4:03 PM

Trying to figure why some were nominated while others weren’t requires inside info, to which I am not privy. I imagine over the next few days we’ll read a lot of opinions from experts.

by Anonymousreply 6May 1, 2025 4:07 PM

Surprised by the Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal snub. Ticket prices for Othello are quite steep as they are for most shows, but it often costs even more to attend a baseball, football and basketball game these days.

Tickets for George Clooney in 'Good Night, and Good Luck' are out of sight.

by Anonymousreply 7May 1, 2025 4:08 PM

Death Becomes Her is garbage.

Terrible book by a sitcom hack, generic score, drag queen acting.

by Anonymousreply 8May 1, 2025 4:09 PM

So happy for Mia Farrow's nomination for 'The Roommate.' But Mia's co-star, Patti LuPone, was snubbed.

by Anonymousreply 9May 1, 2025 4:09 PM

R9 was it because of her altercation with the cast of HELL'S KITCHEN?

by Anonymousreply 10May 1, 2025 4:12 PM

There’s a part of me that understands Broadway snubbing movie stars, which could explain Washington, Gyllenhaal, and Culkin. But George Clooney being nominated? Isn’t his picture next to “movie star” in the dictionary?

by Anonymousreply 11May 1, 2025 4:14 PM

Was Hilty and Simard both getting in somewhat of a surprise? Haven’t they both missed a lot of performances? Is that why Helen J. Shen got snubbed?

by Anonymousreply 12May 1, 2025 4:15 PM

R8, I saw an interview with the two actresses. One of them said the movie is dated because Helen and Madeline were fighting over a fat, balding man. What did the musical change?

In the movie the women have had problems with each other since they were teenagers and Ernest is little more than their pawn. I didn’t think she understood what she was talking about.

by Anonymousreply 13May 1, 2025 4:17 PM

^By the way, I don’t know if Shen is known to have missed a lot of performances, just that she was out the night I saw it and her understudy was fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 14May 1, 2025 4:18 PM

I'm in the minority that didn't care for Maybe Happy Ending or Dead Outlaw.

by Anonymousreply 15May 1, 2025 4:19 PM

I would have liked to see Bill Burr get a nomination for Glengary Glen Ross.

by Anonymousreply 16May 1, 2025 4:20 PM

With only two nominations, 'Real Women Have Curves' won't last.

by Anonymousreply 17May 1, 2025 4:21 PM

I thought 'Just in Time' may have received a best musical nomination, but it didn't happen. Well, Johnathan Groff is on a role with another nom.

by Anonymousreply 18May 1, 2025 4:24 PM

I'm rooting for Jeremy Jordan in 'Floyd Collins,' but Tom Francis in 'Sunset Blvd.' is stiff competition.

by Anonymousreply 19May 1, 2025 4:25 PM

Dead Outlaw better hope the reviews and nominations increase traffic.

by Anonymousreply 20May 1, 2025 4:26 PM

[quote]One of them said the movie is dated because Helen and Madeline were fighting over a fat, balding man.

R13 He wasn't always fat and balding.

When they met him and Madeline wed him, he had a full head of hair and was a successful plastic surgeon.

You're right, he becomes just a pawn in their schemes.

In fact, I think Ernest is the hero of the movie, because in the end gets his hand rejuvenated and becomes a successful surgeon again, remarries and has the family/kids he always wanted, and lives to a ripe old age surrounded by loved ones.

Meanwhile, the other two rot indefinitely and break apart in the end.

by Anonymousreply 21May 1, 2025 4:28 PM

I really think lead actor musical is a three-way race between Groff, Criss and Jordan that could go either way. By the way, has anyone ever won back-to-back Tonys in this category?

by Anonymousreply 22May 1, 2025 4:33 PM

Closing notice soon for Redwood?

by Anonymousreply 23May 1, 2025 4:52 PM

I saw Redwood last week and it was packed.

by Anonymousreply 24May 1, 2025 4:59 PM

Clearly everyone’s sick of Culkin.

by Anonymousreply 25May 1, 2025 5:01 PM

[quote]I really think lead actor musical is a three-way race between Groff, Criss and Jordan

R22. Don't you think that Tom Francis in 'Sunset Blvd' has a chance?

by Anonymousreply 26May 1, 2025 5:08 PM

R25: Best news to come out of the nominations. I can't believe that nothing of a performance won him an Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 27May 1, 2025 5:13 PM

They drummed Downey outta Hollywood so he came craawwwlin' back to Broadway. But Broadway don't go for no dope'n booze!

by Anonymousreply 28May 1, 2025 5:28 PM

Didn't both Laurie Metcalf for Best Actress and Judith Light for Best Featured Actress win in successive (succeeding?) years?

by Anonymousreply 29May 1, 2025 5:34 PM

[quote]I really think lead actor musical is a three-way race between Groff, Criss and Jordan that could go either way. By the way, has anyone ever won back-to-back Tonys in this category?

No, not for Leading Actor in a Musical. These are the six back-to-back Tony winners, but Verdon and Light were the only ones to repeat in the same category:

- Shirley Booth as Featured Actress in a Play in GOODBYE, MY FANCY (1949) and Leading Actress in a Play in COME BACK, LITTLE SHEBA (1950)

- Gwen Verdon as Leading Actress in a Musical in NEW GIRL IN TOWN (1958) and REDHEAD (1959)

- Sandy Dennis as Featured Actress in a Play in A THOUSAND CLOWNS (1963) and Leading Actress in a Play in ANY WEDNSEDAY (1964)

- Stephen Spinella as Featured Actor in a Play in ANGELS IN AMERICA: MILLENNIUM APPROACHES (1993) and Leading Actor in a Play in ANGELS IN AMERICA: PERESTROIKA (1994)

- Judith Light as Featured Actress in a Play in OTHER DESERT CITIES (2012) and THE ASSEMBLED PARTIES (2013)

- Laurie Metcalf as Leading Actress in a Play in A DOLL'S HOUSE (2017) and Featured Actress in a Play in THREE TALL WOMEN (2018)

Sigh. No one is "snubbed" when it comes to awards. Snub indicates a deliberate act. A conspiracy even since awards have large groups of people voting secretly.

Most of those listed people as snubbed got mixed reviews. OR, there were stronger people to nominate.

Case closed.

by Anonymousreply 31May 1, 2025 9:55 PM

Op, this is Phillywhore posting from La Jolla..."WELL, who is gonna win"!!

by Anonymousreply 32May 2, 2025 12:13 AM

Has anyone here seen John Proctor is the Villain? It sounds interesting to me.

by Anonymousreply 33May 2, 2025 10:31 AM

R31 it is NOT case closed!

My performance was stronger than the widow Sinatra or the unfortunate looking HBO actress!

by Anonymousreply 34May 2, 2025 11:12 AM

R33, it’s good. A little heavy handed and rah rah Me Too, but still entertaining and smart and well performed.

OP, I need to know if Mia and George are going to win!! Especially Mia.

Marc, my Broadway expert here in San Diego says that Audra isn't going to win in her category.

by Anonymousreply 37May 2, 2025 2:37 PM

^^^ Not Miss Criss either-She is Gay from space^^^

by Anonymousreply 38May 2, 2025 2:42 PM

MIA for the WIN!!

by Anonymousreply 39May 2, 2025 5:31 PM

Audra stay seated.

by Anonymousreply 43May 4, 2025 1:39 AM

Audra will win. In the end it’s theater professionals voting afterall. They know an incredible performance when they see one

by Anonymousreply 44May 4, 2025 1:40 AM

Maybe some of the stars didn’t get nominated because the nominators felt theirs shows didn’t need the boost

by Anonymousreply 45May 4, 2025 1:41 AM

I'm not a Tony nominator but I have voted in a critic's awards group. I can't speak for everyone but I've never thought "Oh, I'm not voting for this person because they're already famous or this show is very successful". It's pretty much about what you thought was terrific.

I will admit that there's obviously times when you might have strong positive feelings about more than one choice. And, I've "broken" a tie by looking for some legit reason to choose one over another. It usually comes down to looking at each of the options and making a case for one over the other based on whether one of the contenders is overdue for recognition/has too much recognition (ahem, Ms Audra...)

by Anonymousreply 46May 4, 2025 4:36 AM

Or the fact that one performance is 100% driven by human emotions and intelligence, while the other is 95% driven by projection and amplification? Or that one goes into the text and the other totally ignores it?

Who am I fooling? These are the folks who gave Moulin Rouge a Best Musical award.

by Anonymousreply 47May 4, 2025 11:21 AM

R47, I will admit that Moulin Rouge’s award was because it was the pandemic and not much else of value was able to open

R51, do you think your post is a meaningful contribution to any discussion? Did it occur to you to provide an argument or evidence or anything else in support of your unsubstantiated opinion?

by Anonymousreply 52May 5, 2025 9:56 PM

My husband is a bway queen. He’s team Audra & Floyd Collins actor.

by Anonymousreply 53May 5, 2025 10:48 PM

Mia is bitch!
