Remind me why I’m supposed to hate Texas again?
I’m from Boston. I did a three city, five day work trip down to Texas last week. Flew into Austin, took the Vonlane bus to Dallas, then flew to Houston, then back to Boston.
I came in hot and almost expecting to hate the place. But it’s hard to NOT notice how clean and orderly everything is. And the fucking infrastructure. My God, the roads and the infrastructure were just beautiful.
Their property taxes must be through the roof without an income tax. But regardless, I found myself feeling a little resentful because as great as Massachusetts is, our infrastructure is nowhere near as good as what they have in Texas. So where the fuck are my taxes going?

I lived in Texas and liked it a lot -- but in Boston's defense, it's a much older town with narrow old streets.
And if you had to drive in Austin on a regular basis, you might not think the infrastructure was so great. The traffic is hell and the city's still growing.

People, I had to visit THREE cities. I was only in Austin for a day. And frankly, Austin was the city that most reminded me of Boston (although they are not very similar at all).
My point is, this was largely a driving tour so I saw wide swaths of the state. I was just like, “I kind of like it here.”
But yes, the racism is an issue. I’m black and more than once, people wouldn’t enter an elevator with me alone, or else showed noticeable hesitation to do so. I thought that was kind of funny though.

R9, Texas has been growing at an explosive rate for going on 80 years now. Maintenance and improvement of the infrastructure has been pretty steady over that whole time. I don't know why you think 30 years from now it would be in shambles. If anything, it's a challenge to just keep the infrastructure adequate for the growth. As long as it continues to grow, the state will continue maintaining and growing the infrastructure. Now if that growth should stop, then yeah, maybe things would start to deteriorate. But that's not going to happen in the foreseeable future.
R12, living in Texas is not any different than living in any other place in the US. Every day, people go to work, drive in traffic, do their jobs, go to school, shop for things they need, come home, watch TV, go to bed, and then get up the next day and do it all over again. There's nothing inherent about Texas that would make living there much different than living in any other place in this country.
R23, that has happened exactly one time in my entire 60 years. And that was because the entire state, from the Panhandle to the Rio Grande Valley was suddenly plunged into sub-freezing temperatures. That is a very rare occurrence. It's not like we live in fear everytime a cold front blows through.
That being said, as a native Texan, there are times I hate being in this shit hole. The traffic sucks in the big metro areas. The weather, especially summers, can be unbearable. And the political climate is depressing.

I also had a dude in a cowboy hat get real flustered when he got on the elevator with me at the Westin in downtown Dallas, hit the button for the 18th floor, and then watched me hit the button for the 30th floor. He didn’t like that.

R30, here's a chart of the population growth of the DFW metro area since 1950. What I see is a steady year-over-year growth over a 75-year period. I don't see any unusual spikes indicating dramatic increases in the recent past.
The charts for Houston and Austin are similar, showing steady year-over-year growth. Austin's incredible growth, though, has been compacted into the last 40 years instead of 80.

Sorry -- I didn't read the thread, so please forgive me if someone already said this, but Boston (and Philly, etc.) became cities when people rode horses to get around. That's why the damned streets in Philly are so narrow and there's never anywhere to park.
Places like FL have wide roads, great asphalt (no snow!) and lots and lots of parking. I don't think I've parallel parked a car more than three times in the entire 22 years (with a break in the middle) I've lived here.
The south does have its compensations!

potential Texans are always excited about' no State income tax!' What they don't tell you; our property taxes are insane. Most likely 3-4 times what you pay in an 'income tax' State. Having grown up in upstate New York and been forced to attend my fair share of Civil War reenactments as a child nobody needs to be letting the North off on the racism front. Growing up in my small farm town I'd see more Confederate flags than I have visiting the South and yes, the logic of that always baffled me (WE ARE THE NORTH, YOU FECKLESS CUNTS) but then, I'm not racist. (At least I try not to be but having been raised in the middle of it I like anybody find those biases rearing their heads at times and have to work all the time to tear them out by the root.)
Anyway my boyfriend's from South Carolina and yes you do see lots of commingling between black and white people down there but it has its own shit going on (obviously) - take my boyfriend's niece, who is trying very hard to be a good liberal for her gay uncle but was recently called upon to give a speech at her black nanny's wake and went full ebonics "You is smart, you is kind, you is important." with that shit. I almost crawled out of my skin when I pictured this white princess making this elderly black woman's death entirely about herself, right to the faces of the woman's grieving family.

It’s not just property taxes. I can’t speak to TX, but I lived in Nashville (same game as TX) and CA. So much stuff in TN was more expensive than CA. Get into things like water, car license registrations, contractors, even booze… way more expensive.
As for infrastructure, I used to say “yeah, we have taxes in CA. You know what else we have? Sidewalks. Street lights. Traffic lights that don’t dangle from a string over intersections. Etc etc.”. Infrastructure in Nashville is downright atrocious as they keep building skyscraper after skyscraper without doing a single improvement to the roads.

Texas’ cities are liberal enclaves. The problem is the politics is dominated by rural area because of voter suppression and gerrymandering. Those rural folks detest gays.
A friend moved to a suburb and all his neighbors were church-going people who, though nice, disapproved of his being gay. the Whites don’t like Latinos and Blacks either but tolerate them because they need the labor. Oh, FFS. The wind blows in Texas — not even that hard — and the power goes out. Or when you have rolling blackouts and the electric company can charge you whatever they want, so running that heater/AC when it is most needed is going to mean you won't be able to pay the rent. And yes, the streets in Austin, Dallas and Houston are gorgeous... a few miles out of town, not so much. And by the way, don't get sick in Texas because unless you're in one of the three major cities, you'll have to drive hours to get to a hospital and then wait hours because the one doctor on staff is busy. And if you're female... well, don't get sick.
Woot! There's no income taxes! Because the hourly laborer should bear the same burden to maintain the roads, bridges and tunnels as the wealthy conglomerate even though the hourly laborer drives an econobox fewer than 20 miles a day and the conglomerate maintains a fleet of trucks each weighing more than a hundred econoboxes and which get driven hundreds of miles per day. I mean, a road's a road, amiright?
Mmmm, barbecue. Delicious. What's the meat? Was it processed through an inspected processing plant? Who knows, it's Texas, where we employ undocumented immigrants (who are stealing our jobs!) and ignore routine health and safety protocols because freedom. And if you're poor and hungry, that's on you; God blesses the wealthy for a reason.

Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the country and has a great food scene because of that. How is that based on racism? But as a Texas (fifth generation), I have to say I am embarrassed by my state at this point. It's run by fascists.

The main divide has always been urban vs. rural. A lot of demographics people try to explain differences with (like race) are minuscule when you compare them to urban vs. rural.
I spent three weeks in Austin twenty years ago (some woman I was sleeping with lived there) and I really loved it, other than the weird main road where you can see the place you want to go, but you have to drive by it, do a ridiculous U-turn, get off again, and do another U-turn to actually get to the place you're trying to go. JFC!!
My Austin story is, I went to a restaurant called Texas Land and Cattle, because the steaks were supposed to be incredible (which mine certainly was). I was by myself because I was driving from place to place in the area looking for work (not as weird as it sounds -- really!). I sat down at a booth, and the wait staff (mostly college students) was so nice to me!! The place was pretty empty, so they took turns sitting with me while I waited and ate so I wouldn't be sitting alone.
Needless to say, they got great tips and I bent over backwards gushing to the manager about what wonderful kids they were.
Those were the days...

If y'all want to understand Boston racism - as well as Boston's perpetual reckoning with and self-flagellation about its racism - this documentary does a pretty good job of explaining it.
But sure, if this is about your taxes, you go girl and head on down to Texas. I'm sure that power grid doesn't need any tax money.
I personally would have an issue about living in a gun-happy state hellbent on destroying basic health care for women (among other things). But I do love chicken shit bingo ....

I've never been to Texas and I probably wouldn't hate it but every time I think about how people hate Texas it reminds me of this song when the two Dixie Chicks did their little side project the courtyard hounds. There's a song where they do it with Jacob Dylan about how they respective city's weather is preventing them from taking the next step in the relationship. Her because it's too damn cold in Chicago and him because Texas is too f****** hot. I always think when I hear that song that I probably follow Jacob in his hot cock anywhere.

When my ex and I drove across west Texas it was endless nothing for miles. I was terrified the truck would break down. If you saw two cars in an hour that was a lot.
We stopped for the night in a wide-spot-in-the-road shithole called Fort Stockton. There was a no-name motel off the highway. The clerk was a mean-mouthed frau wearing a TURQUOISE CROSS NECKLACE who knew the score and practically threw the keys at us.
Finally we saw a local and asked where we could get a beer or two to cool down. "IT'S SUNDAY!" he said. We walked to a Pizza Hut that looked like it hadn't been cleaned in 10 years (seriously, pizza crusts on the floor, in the aisles) and sullen teenagers brought us tepid Coors Light tap in those red plastic Pizza Hut cups.
We backed the rear of the truck flush against the wall before bed, got up with the sun, and didn't even have coffee before peeling out of there.
And there's more Fort Stocktons in Texas than there are Austins or Marvas.

I used to go to Texas a couple times a year and got to Dallas, Houston, Ft Worth & El Paso. Always happy to leave. You can see glimpses Austin's past quirkiness, but mostly it seems drowned in traffic. I'm not sure where OP's "clean" part comes from--the cities are sprawlburgs with lots of strip malls and there's plenty of litter on the road and with rapid growth you have 1st and second rings of suburbs that greatly faded..

R88 Black people do better in red states than blue states. Massachusetts is a liberal blue state but black people would fare better in Texas or southern states with home ownership, business ownership, and a better school system in the neighborhoods.
That’s not cause red states are better, black people root mostly from red states and have built a better system over the decades. There’s no equivalent of a Houston or Atlanta in the Northeast.

R105 Yes, Massachusetts is racist. Massachusetts is a sad insight into what black people living in a blue Democratic liberal state looks like.
So when Democrats want to say Democrats are so progressive and make everyone thrive, just look at the black population of Massachusetts and see how thriving they are.
I think it’s common knowledge now at this point how black people who have to move to Boston for work or college are usually horrified and experience a culture shock.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | May 2, 2025 4:47 AM

R129 They’re just gaslighting you, must be from Massachusetts. White Democrats don’t realize they’re as bad as White Republicans when you look at outcomes for black people.
More overt white racists are way easier to deal with than the whites who don’t know they’re racist. That has been the general rhetoric of black transplants who come from the south and had to live in Northeast places like Boston.
Better ideology does not equal better outcomes.

Also, the thing about Boston and racism is the effects of the melting pot.
In the south the poverty is more racially segregated. I used to visit my family in the south in Arkansas and Tennessee and I never saw one white person while I was there.
In Boston - poor whites, poor Latinos, poor blacks, poor Asians all live in the same neighborhood, same buildings. But a lot of these whites have a bitterness and resentment that they have to share the same space as people of color and their whiteness is the only thing that they have that makes them feel superior.
Mark Wahlberg is a textbook example of this. He grew up in Dorchester which is a rough neighborhood and as a teenager got arrested for blinding an Asian man and throwing rocks at a little black girl.

Hasn’t been my experience. Have always found a great deal of neighborliness in working class areas and underserved areas, although in the latter, the hostility usually comes from the castes of recent arrivals who own the little bodegas people rely on, like Asian, South Asian & Middle Eastern

Of course the contrarians are going to use Massachusetts — the most racist Northern/liberal (although I'd argue it's libertarian, not liberal) state — as "evidence" that Texas is or is not.... whatever. I lived in MA for over a decade, hated it, and promptly left when I'd made a bunch of money and opportunities elsewhere beckoned. What I realized after living there a few years is that there are two Massachusetts: the liberal elite version and the reality that it is a poor working class state. It really depends on the circles in which you travel.
It doesn't take a Harvard or MIT professor to see OP's orbit.

*MY 24-YEAR OLD NEIGHBOR IS DEAD TO ME!*
[quote]He was just a kid.
[quote]Last night I noticed that his balcony door was wide open, with his dog roaming in and out. I assumed he went on a road trip or something and had just left his dog to his own devices. But the dog has indeed been barking since Saturday night, and in that plaintive yelp that dogs use when they are in distress. This morning when I saw that his balcony was still wide open, I considered notifying the concierge, but I didn't do it. I just thought he was an irresponsible dog owner.
[quote]Fast forward to this afternoon and two of his friends are pounding on his door. So I go outside and tell them that his balcony door has been wide open for a day. They insisted that nothing was wrong, even as they continued banging. About thirty minutes later, the two friends were outside the apartment bawling. One of them took the poor dog away. Now the police are here.
