Cooking blogger plagiarism drama!
[quote] The founder of food website RecipeTin Eats has accused an influencer of plagiarising her recipes in a bestselling Australian cookbook.
[quote]On Tuesday Nagi Maehashi, who started RecipeTin Eats in 2014, accused Brooke Bellamy – also known as Brooki Bakehouse – of plagiarising two of her recipes in Bellamy’s popular cookbook, Bake with Brooki.
[quote] Posting the recipes side by side for readers to compare, Maehashi said two of her recipes, for caramel slice and baklava, were copied in Bellamy’s book. She said she realised after she was contacted by a reader last year who noticed “remarkable similarities” with one of the recipes.
[quote]“To see them plagiarised (in my view) and used in a book for profit, without permission, and without credit, doesn’t just feel unfair. It feels like a blatant exploitation of my work,” she said.
[quote]“And because the income from my website helps fund my food bank, RecipeTin Meals, this isn’t just legally questionable – I find it ethically indefensible.”

But wait... there's more! Sally's Baking Addiction also alleges that Brooke Bellamy copied her Best Vanilla Cake recipe.

I'd have to see the details. There's not a massive variety in classic vanilla cake recipes or baklava recipes; in the hundreds of cookbooks, some recipes are going to have 'remarkable similarities.'

This sounds believe. Not sure if other DLers have seen Nagi’s videos but she’s been putting out cooking content since before covid. She just released the actual cookbook in the last year or so.

R6 - indeed! It's an online bake-sale hairpulling drag down fight! I'm here for it!
I hate these basic bitches like Brooke Bellamy (Brooki Bakehouse? C'mon now).
I bet ALL of the recipes are stolen - just look at her. She's here for the 'gram. She wanted to create a niche to get her social media going and it worked - because so many women just buy into this young girl boss bull.
This reminds me of that Aussie young women who supposedly had cancer and was promoting all of the health and wellness things - she even got a deal with Apple. Turns out, she never had cancer or any health issues. All faked.

Here is Nagi's statement on her website with the recipes side by side for comparison.
I've been using her recipes for years and she is a real gem.

R8 - look at Nagi, then look at Brooke. Who do you think is the real experienced baking professional? Seriously.
Nagi looks like all of the famous cooks and bakers we know. Not this scammer.

Brooke's book sold $4 million in Australia alone? The fuck? That's what 125,000 to 150,000 copies? So 1 out of every 200 Australians bought this shitty dessert baking book?

This drama was a storyline in a Midsomer Murders episode I recently re-watched. I prefer the Midsomer version unless a murder turns up in this "real life" brouhaha.

I love Nagi’s recipes and those recipes side by side are pretty damning. The accused only reworded the sentences but the paragraphing, ingredient list, and temp/times are identical.

Her husband:
"Mr Bellamy grew up on the family farm where infant formula company Bellamy's Organic was founded by his parents, David Bellamy and Dooley Crighton-Bellamy, before it was acquired by a Chinese dairy giant for $1.5billion."
So she married into money and posted her oh-so-glamorous life on social media and started a baking company where she stole the recipes. Reminds me of Seinfeld's wife who created a cooking book for kids, that stole recipes and ideas from a lot of other places.
Fuck her and this 'self-taught Baker - I learned everything in my parent's kitchen'. No bitch you did not.
I just hate the fake shit on social media and these people who get lofted above by unsuspecting women on Instagram who want her life of beautiful home, expensive clothes, luxury travel - all supposedly through her baking. But it's not - it's her husband's family money.
Insta and the Kardashians have people believing ANYTHING.

Ok game over, it’s total plagiarism. Clear as day when you compare the two recipes side by side.

R17 - but did you read one of Brooke's replies? She said she's willing to take the 2 recipes off of her website. Jeesh - why is everyone making such a big deal over this?
Seriously - that's essentially what Brooki wrote. Soft admitting she stole them and will just remove those 2, like that's all there is to it.

Jesus, they've got some plagiarize-happy bullshiters down there in Oz.
Same bullshit happened with that bitch who was inspiration for "Apple Cider Vinegar" (Belle Gibson).

Plagiarism is rampant. I write historical pieces, and my stuff gets stolen word for word by some historical writers. Lazy ass fuckers.
Some folks at least ask for permission, or offer a credit/citation for my work, at least there's that.

R21 - yep - that's who I was thinking of - Belle Gibson. There's a documentary on Netflix about her scam.
Question for Aussies - I know you abbreviate a lot of things, like breakie (brekie sp?) for breakfast, brolly for umbrella, arvo, etc.
Is Brooki some play on words for some term used in Australia? Because otherwise it looks and sounds stupid and try-hard.

As long as the concept isn't clearly stolen, like that sneak your kids vegetables thing with Mrs. Seinfeld, I'm skeptical. There's only so many ways to make a chicken pot pie.

The only ‘brookie’recetence I have is back from Master Chef Season ‘?’ Where Nigella Lawson was a surprise guest judge and she went into the contestant residence late at night, woke the em all up and made them cook her a midnight snack.
The guy who won the challenge made ‘brookies’ which were supposedly a brownie/ cookie combo. He probably stole that recipe from online anyway himself. Nigel’s lost her mind over them.

R26 - are you Australian? Yes, I have heard of brookies (brownie/cookie) before - but she says Brooki?
Oh dumb me - I finally went to her website. They sell cookies and brownies. Duh.
Ok - that's what it is. Curiously - no brownies on this website and just 2 cookie boxes available for sale. The rest is just merch? Weird.

I'm a Brooki fan, having watched numerous videos. You can tell she works her ass off, and her bakeries have been wildly successful. I don't believe she knowingly plagiarized anything. I'm Team Brooki.
