Fortunate to spend yesterday at the Madrid Open, with incredible eye candy matches. Tommy's mustache is a mistake, but he has lovely thighs. Khachanov does indeed look like a Helmsworth, albeit with less muscle. Musetti is lovely -- he's the only one who doesn't wear a baseball cap or a headband, presumably because it would mess up his perfect hair -- he's also tiny compared to the other blokes, although it doesn't seem to matter. The Dmitrov-Fearnley match comprised one game (leftover from yesterday's blackout); Dmitrov is, indeed, lovely, but Fearnley is a doll. Draper and Berretini are both as beautiful closeup as you'd imagine -- I don't understand why the latter retired after a set (no evidence of injury into the tiebreaker).
It's a great place to watch tennis -- no bad seats in the main stadium (unlike the Grand Slams), and Court 3 (main stadium tkts get access) is about as close to the players as you can get.
On the tennis front, I haven't been to live tennis in 6 years, and the game has changes, I think for the better -- the power, the focus, the accuracy, the shots that have no margins of error. No tedium of Nadal's OCD every serve and Djokovic's annoyance (I am already writing him off as yesterday's news). The men are much hotter, as well.
Madrid is the nicest city in the world.

Going out in Madrid in the late 90s and 00s was a blast. Out for a dinner at 10pm - hit a first bar about midnight. Get chatting to someone at the bar - they introduce you to their friends. Leave with them en masse at 2am, and off to the next bar. Get talking to someone else at the new bar - meet their friends - leave with the new people to go to a club - rinse and repeat until you finally run out of juice/sanity at some afterparty at someone's apartment in Chueca in the middle of the next afternoon.
Unlike Barcelona, no-one cares where you're from - if you're up for an adventure you're 'new family'. Think of a European version of the 70s 'Tales Of The City' San Francisco.
Grand architecture, a beautiful park (The Retiro), a brilliant Metro system. and great food and drink. Seriously, what's not to love?

r13, The primary complaint seemed to be they never knew where to go to eat (and that the Spanish dining hours were a bad fit for a player's schedule). But it also seemed like they couldn't figure out where they were supposed to go for fun/tourism.
I will add that I don't have a clear sense of Madrid as a tourist destination, either. It seems to lack the iconic must-see attraction and/or neighborhood.

R15 I understand what you mean, R15. Madrid lacks the grand statement landmarks of a Paris, Rome, London, or even Seville, but... I know this sounds 'wanky'... it's more of a vibe city. You hang out, observe, and get drawn in to what's going on. It doesn't really lend itself to the experience of visiting tennis players who are looking for things to easily do and see in the few hours they have to spare during a tournament.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 30, 2025 2:18 PM |
It doesn’t sound wanky. It sounds ill-informed and moronic.
If you had only one morning and afternoon to spare you could see three of the world’s greatest art museums within a 15 minute walk, with time to stroll through one of Europe’s greatest public parks.

Another fun day at the Madrid Open -- I can't imagine a tournament that gives you better value for your money -- no bad seats, and you can visit the other main courts if you're not feeling the match on the main court.
Draper v. Paul: They both play the same sort of game -- stand at the baseline and wait for the other handsome guy to make an error. But Jack is much bigger, much stronger (Paul would clearly be the bottom) and was not missing at all yesterday. Tommy just totally outgunned (think 8x6 vs. 5x4). After the match, Big Jack took off his baseball cap so that his perfectly coiffed here (still perfect after the match) would be just so for the interviews...
Maddy v. Iga: First set, Maddy didn't miss a thing. Iga Bageled! But somehow we knew that Iga would win. Iga looks...scrawny. But focused. The final set was tense.
The funnest match of the day was on Court 3, for dessert: Ro Bopanna, looking grandfatherly at 45, playing doubles with Ben Shelton (less than half Bopanna's age) against two veteran Argentinian fellows. I'd love to know how this pairing came about. Ben is handsomer and much smaller in person! Looks barely 5'8". But more power than the other three put together -- plays very exciting tennis, and when it works, it's amazing, but it often doesn't work...All charisma, little control. Bopanna has quite the cheering section. Doubles here they play sudden death games (no deuce/ad) and no third set -- the third set is simply a ten point tie break, which the Argentinians won 11-9. Men's doubles on a tiny court > Women's singles on a stadium court.
Those above who don't get Madrid...Really? True, it doesn't have an Eiffel Tower or a Sagrada Familiar or a gay beach, but fantastic museums, great neighborhoods, amazing parks, fantastic food, and the street vibe is just wonderful (even during the blackout on Monday). In nice weather (which can be a problem, admittedly), my favorite city in the world.

R28 You nailed it. I don't get why Madrid gets a bad rep. Sure, it doesn't have the Eiffel Tower or the Colosseum or Sagrada familia. And it's in the middle of the country, so not exactly close to a beach (just a few hours away by train though!) On the other hand Madrid is amazing in many other ways, it has an amazing park (Parque Retiro), great museums (Thyssen, Prado etc), a great gay neighborhood (Chueca), great food, good public transportation (the metro), a good vibe and the weather is really nice (in summer, even though it gets really hot it is never unbearable thanks to the altitude, it's a dry heat). The best part is that it isn't overtly touristy. Barcelona has become horrible. Madrid is a very underrated city imo. It's very fun and can be recommended. The people are friendly and fun too.

A French tennis player has claimed that he was given a death threat at the net by his opponent in a Challenger tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
Corentin Moutet was taking part in the Open Aix Provence Credit Agricole in Aix-en-Provence this week, playing his first-round tie against Pavel Kotov.
A place in the second-round remains in play for both players, with bad light having suspended their tussle at 7-5, 3-6 to Moutet, and with the third set at 5-5.
But the 26-year-old could yet be unwilling to return to face off with his Russian opponent, having alleged that Kotov said that he would 'kill him' if he returned to face off with him at the net.
In a post on social media which was later deleted by the player, Moutet claimed that Kotov had told him: 'Next time you come to the net, I'll kill you.
'One day, someone will kill you.'
Directing the remainder of the post at his followers, and the ATP, Moutet added: 'There wasn't even a warning. Apparently, those words are allowed on court.
'How do you (the ATP) expect me not to get involved if you don't do your job?'
After deleting the social media message, Moutet later returned to the platform to reshare a report of the events, adding: 'I'm going to have trouble sleeping...'
World No121 Kotov has not responded to the allegations publicly.
The pair were forced to continue their clash on Thursday, with Moutet taking the match 6-5. 3-6, 7-5. The pair refused to shake hands at the net.
Moutet has often courted controversy on the tennis tour, most recently embroiling himself in a showdown with world No75 Alexander Bublik during which the Kazakh star offered to 'meet (Moutet) in the car park'.
'You want to fight? The French kid is speaking and he doesn't want to fight.' Bublik said after both players had shaken hands with the umpire.
'Let's go. We meet in 10 minutes outside.'
Last year's Madrid Open also saw Moutet engage in a battle of words with the umpire after she denied him the opportunity to drink a coffee during his four-hour epic against Shang Jungcheng.
'It doesn't matter where we play, we don't provide coffee,' the umpire said in an attempt to placate the Frenchman. 'I cannot bring it to you.'
Moutet instead went into furious detail about the other refreshments on offer at the tournament, before adding sarcastically: 'Am I asking for caviar?'

Today at the Madrid Open...
Neither Ruud nor Coco crumbled. The latter was VERY impressive: Calm, collected, unrattled, the serve and forehand working beautifully. Totally dialed in. Even after the first set during the "toilet break," (I love it that they actually call it that), while Iga went potty, Coco practiced her serves. Beautiful. Ruud's game isn't flashy, but his shots hit the lines today just a few more times than Medvedev...
Wonderful doubles match with Americans Harrison (yum if you like Abercrombie boys with abs) and King (yum if you like handsome African American men) firing on all cylinders and making the semis. Again, open access to smaller courts makes this a fantastic tournament for spectators. Couldn't be easier to get to the Caja Magica by metro (which is immaculately clean, calm, polite)...A lovely place, this.

Yeah, you're so right R152, Sweden has 1.85 X the population and not twice the population *eye-roll*

Meanwhile, the contenders' field to take the men's singles title this year looks more open than for a long while: rusty Sinner, Carlitos physically ailing, doddering Djokovic, wobbly RFC. Top contenders in terms of results so far, making a dent in more than one clay 1000/500 event: Alcaraz-Monte Carlo title & Barcelona finalist, Ruud-Madrid title & Barcelona QF, Musetti-Monte Carlo finalist & Madrid SF, Cerundolo-Madrid & Munich SF, Fils-Barcelona SF & Monte Carlo QF, Demon-Monte Carlo SF & Barcelona QF, ADF-Monte Carlo SF & Barcelona QF, Tsitsipas-Monte Carlo & Barcelona QF. Plus Draper's Madrid final leading the freak runs of RFC to the Hamburg title over Mopsy, and Rune taking Barcelona. We need Rome to give us a better idea of what's what and who's where.
FIrst round Rome matches likely worth a watch: Diallo-Giron, Navone-Cina, Marzipan-Fonseca, Cobolli-Nardi, Hijikata-Moutet, Comesana-Altmaier, Djere-Etcheverry, GMP-Thompson; and potential second round clashes: Carabelli-RFC, Navone-Sinner, Berrettini-Fognini, Fonseca-Rublev, Arnaldi-Paul, FAA-Borges, Demon-Cobolli, Comesana-Rune, Alcaraz-Struff, Musetti-Medjedovic.

I have a question whose answer I should know, but don't.
Watching the Madrid Open last week, it occurs to me: Why do the players wear the exact same outfits every day? I mean, they wash the shirts between days, of course (I suspect...). But Jack D wore the exact same blue and white (not particularly flashy or flattering) shirt every day. When he (thankfully, it was lovely) changed shirts several times during a sweaty match, the replacements were exactly the same model of blue and white shirt.
I understand that they shill for various corporations, but you could still have your corporate logo on different colored shirts -- say, blue and white one day, green and white the next, etc....Is this a tennis tournament rule? A strict contract with the corporate donors (Jack, you will only wear that blue and white model day in and day out)?

That’s too dumb to even answer—but, so you know, it’s not the same pieces of clothing…just the same kit. And they wear/rotate kits as they’ve arranged with their sponsor(s). Duh.

[R167] As I clearly wrote, "When he (thankfully, it was lovely) changed shirts several times during a sweaty match, the replacements were exactly the same model of blue and white shirt.]] Your polite response doesn't answer the question of why he can't wear a different color with the same logos, or a different style...

It did answer: And they wear/rotate kits as they’ve arranged with their sponsor(s).

…mean, they wash the shirts between days, of course (I suspect...).
You suspect? That they wear the same clothing day after day? It’s fast fashion —one and done. New out of the package for each match.
by Anonymous | reply 170 | May 6, 2025 6:26 AM |
R166 a player's "kit" remains the same during the each tournament. It's almost like wearing a "jersey". Most top ten players will then have a new kit for the next tournament.
It makes a statement. For players like Serena, it was meant to be fashion.
Rafa is probably the most famous male player known for his colorful kits. And him (or anyone) wearing the same kit over and over helps sell tennis outfits all over the world. It's all preplanned and the kits are revealed a week or two before the big tourneys. It's kinda a big deal for certain players.
Also, here's actually tennis fans who rate kits, obsess over kits, criticize kits, etc.

R268 you can always watch golf instead….
They have outfits for each round—with a focus on Sat & Sun for TV. Why do you think Tiger wore red on Sunday?

R168^
by Anonymous | reply 173 | May 6, 2025 6:49 AM |
So mightn't it attract even more attention -- for the player, for the designer, for the corporate sponsor -- if the player did as golfers do, and, e.g.. kept the same design and same logos but changed colors every day? Is there an actual rule against that?
by Anonymous | reply 175 | May 6, 2025 7:43 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 185 | May 6, 2025 6:27 PM |
R185 Porna's been winning or making finals in several Challengers so far this year, and has got his ranking back up to c. 80-ish. This should mean that he starts to get direct entry into 250s again. Dropping down to Challengers seems to be a good policy for a lot of players who have suffered a loss of form. The UGOAT did the same thing back in 2023 after falling to around 150: got his confidence and momentum back.
