Conclave to elect new pope to start on May 7

Roman Catholic cardinals will begin their secret conclave to elect the new leader of the global Church on May 7, the Vatican said on Monday, confirming what a source had previously told Reuters.

The date was decided during a closed-door meeting of cardinals at the Vatican, the first since the funeral of Pope Francis on Saturday.

Some 135 cardinals, all under the age of 80 and from all corners of the world, are eligible to take part in the vote for the next head of the 1.4-billion-member Church, which is beset by concerns over its finances and divisions over doctrine.

[quote] The 16th-century Sistine Chapel, where conclaves are held beneath the gaze of Michelangelo's masterpiece frescoes, was closed to tourists on Monday to ready the space for an election that mixes ancient ritual with modern, anti-spying technologies.

[quote] The previous two conclaves, held in 2005 and 2013, lasted just two days. But Swedish cardinal Anders Arborelius said on Monday that the coming ballot may take longer, as many of the cardinals appointed by Pope Francis have never met each other.

[quote] Francis made a priority of appointing the red-hatted "Princes of the Church" from countries that had never had them, such as Myanmar, Haiti, Rwanda and Arborelius' own Sweden.

[quote] "We don't know each other," said Arborelius.

[quote] The earliest the conclave could have begun was May 6, the Vatican said. Starting it a day later means cardinals will have slightly more time for their daily general discussions ahead of the momentous ballot.

[quote] Around 190 cardinals took part in Monday's meeting, including roughly 100 electors, the Vatican said.

Wow, so there could be a new Pope by mid-May.

I have a very, very strong feeling that the next Pope will be American.

Not necessarily. With so many electors around, there might be some leakage. And I'm sure there are group chats going on among their assistant twinks as well, as they use this opportunity to get off in Rome.

by Anonymousreply 14May 5, 2025 6:27 AM

I'm thinking it'll be a European pope....they had their first Latin American last time so they'll swing back to Europe.

American is definitely a no. It usually is but since the world hates us, there's no way they'd elect an American.

And, I doubt African is likely. They're all very conservative...with the irony that the WHITE conservative Catholics would freak out if they picked a black Pope.

Asian could slip through though.

by Anonymousreply 21May 5, 2025 10:59 AM

[quote]There have also been concerns raised about Tagle’s performance in administrative roles. “Tagle is considered intelligent, a good theologian, and a good communicator. But in many ways he has not been a very good administrator in some of the jobs he’s had in the Vatican. He has not proven himself in that role,” Charles Collins, managing editor of Crux, a publication that focuses on the Vatican and the Catholic Church, is quoted as telling NBC.

[quote]In 2022, Pope Francis removed Tagle along with the entire management team of Caritas Internationalis, appointing a commissioner to run it, following accusations of bullying and humiliation of employees.

He's gonna run the Vatican into the ground if elected, lol.

by Anonymousreply 27May 5, 2025 12:52 PM

Great article on the subject, with a really nice cover shot to boot. That's St Peter with his key in the foreground.

[quote]There is no limit as to how long a conclave can last when electing a new Pope. One vote will be held on the first day of voting. If this vote is not decisive, over the next two days, two votes will be held in the morning, and two more in the afternoon. If a decision still has not been made after three days, a break of up to one day is permitted, allowing for prayer and discussion amongst cardinals. But this process can continue indefinitely, until a majority is reached.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 28May 5, 2025 1:04 PM

So we're getting nine votes in three days, starting Wednesday. Busy beavers, those electors.

[quote]If a majority is not met, then the ballot papers will be added to a mixture of potassium perchlorate, anthracene and sulfur to create the black smoke. A different recipe of potassium chlorate, lactose and chloroform resin will be added to the papers and burned to create white smoke if a Pope has been elected.

A whole fucking science involved.

[quote]In 1274, Gregory X declared that for future elections on a new Pope, cardinals should be locked away in seclusion "cum clave," the Latin for "with a key."

So why isn't it called a cumclave?

[quote] Could an American pope be waiting in the wings?

With more than 61 million Catholics and the second-highest number of cardinals after Italy, the United States is primed for the question of whether an American pontiff is possible in the wake of Pope Francis' death.

Francis, a Jesuit from Argentina who died at age 88, after 12 years as leader of the Roman Catholic Church, was the first non-European pope in nearly 1,300 years.

The United States has 17 cardinals, 10 of whom are eligible to vote in the election of the next pope, according to the Vatican. The country with the most cardinals is Italy, which has 51, including 17 eligible to vote for the next pontiff, according to the Vatican.

The United States has 61.9 million Catholics, representing about 19% of the total population, according to the most recent U.S. Religion Census conducted in 2020 by the Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies.

Even though the U.S. has one of the largest Catholic populations in the world, some experts told ABC News that the likelihood of the next pontiff coming from America is a long shot.

"If the Catholic Church were also run by an American, the global dominance of the U.S. would be simply pervasive and overwhelming," said Barrett Doyle.

Technically, any man baptized in the Catholic Church can become pope, according to the Vatican. But popes are typically chosen from the College of Cardinals. Only cardinals under the age of 80 are allowed to participate in electing a pope.

Cristina Traina, a religious studies professor at Fordham University, told ABC News that several U.S. cardinals have been floated as possible successors to Francis.

"I think it’s unlikely because the American church is seen as contentious at this moment," Traina said of the prospect of an American being chosen as the next pope. "So, I think they are much more likely to go either for a European or someone from the global south or Asia."

Traina, however, said Cardinal Joseph Tobin, the archbishop of the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey since 2017, has emerged as a possible candidate.

The 73-year-old Tobin was named by Pope Francis to the College of Cardinals in 2016 to serve as the Archbishop of Indianapolis, after Pope Benedict XVI appointed him in 2012, according to his biography on the New Jersey Catholic Conference website.

Tobin previously served in several positions in the Catholic Church, including pastor of St. Alphonsus Parish in Chicago and General Consultor of the Community of Rome and Superior General of Redemptorists in Rome, according to his biography.

Another American cardinal who has been mentioned as a possible successor to Francis is Cardinal Robert Prevost. The 69-year-old Chicago-born Prevost was the only U.S. cardinal included on a shot list of front-runners for pope, also known as "papabiles," compiled in the aftermath of Francis' death by the Associated Press.

Since 2023, Prevost has held the position at the Vatican as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, in charge of vetting nominations for bishops around the world, according to his profile on the Vatican Press Office website. Francis brought Prevost to work at the Vatican after first appointing him in 2014 to serve as the bishop of Chiclayo, Peru. Prevost is also president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.

"There has traditionally been a lot of wariness about a pope from the Anglosphere," Pattenden said. "I shouldn’t think that the current circumstances change that, especially now with the tensions between the Vatican and the Trump administration."

Yeah, the Spanish did a number on the Filipinos. Their culture is so intertwined with Catholicism by now, it's a bit like in those super Muslim countries where national identity has been bulldozed by Islam and the people don't really know what they'd be without religion holding them together. Kinda sad to see.

Francis said in his memoir that he was informed at a lunch break on the second day that consensus was forming around him, and then he won in the first afternoon vote. So having that momentum is incredibly important, possibly more than the support going into the first vote.

by Anonymousreply 132May 7, 2025 7:56 PM

Nine votes in three days! As always, the Vatican wants to get a new pope in quickly, nothing good can come out of a power vacuum. But also, they can't be dealing with all these cardinals and the crowds for an extended period of time, they prefer business as usual.

by Anonymousreply 133May 7, 2025 7:59 PM

Does anyone know what Francis's prospects were before the last conclave?

by Anonymousreply 134May 7, 2025 8:03 PM

He was mentioned among potential candidates, but definitely not among the frontrunners. Hence the gasps when his name was read out loud, a reaction which briefly surprised even the cardinal reading the announcement.

Two-thirds of the voters are needed for election.

[quote] Why Papal Conclaves Have Drawn the Attention of Spies

Today, the papal conclave convened and it is going to captivate the attention of the world for however long it lasts.

The fascination stems from the rarity, mystique, drama, and importance of conclaves, as well as the secrecy that governs them. Each conclave is by its nature a mixture of rumors, intrigue, and disinformation.

Observers understand the basic mechanics of the conclave: Cardinals will have informal meetings in the corridors, during meals, and in the chambers. Their goal will be to form a large enough coalition to secure the requisite 75% of the votes necessary to elect a pope. In the event of one coalition failing, its members may move to support another candidate as a bloc, or they could splinter and back different choices. Seen from the outside, the duration of the conclave can provide hints as to the difficulty or the ease with which the cardinals reach an agreement to appoint the next head of the Church.

But no one really knows what’s going on inside the conclave—and everyone wants information. So much so that, in the past, spies have assessed the dynamics at play, both before and during conclaves. They’ve gained valuable information about the most likely candidates and their support, which gives their governments a sense of how the conclave might turn out. These efforts reflect how countries across the globe see the Vatican as an important world power.

This history suggests that intelligence operatives around the world might be scurrying to glean any information they can. The Vatican’s security service assuredly has worked to prevent leaks. Yet, no system is foolproof. Even so, the nature of the conclave means that intelligence agencies still face a steep challenge in trying to give their governments a leg up in knowing the identity of the next Pope.

In theory, a conclave is a secret election: the cardinals gather together in closed quarters, without any assistants or any way of communicating with the outside world. In fact, it’s so buttoned-up that, since 1800, the ballot papers used in voting, as well as any notes taken during the assembly are burnt.

Yet, many are desperate to get any crumb of information possible about who will be the next pope. Due to the extraordinary powers of the Supreme Pontiff, the stakes are high. Thanks to the very particular, unique status of the Vatican, the Pope runs a sovereign micro-state, while also leading one of the world’s largest religious communities with some 1.3 billion members. Fairly or unfairly, popes are often credited with an outsized influence over the way the world is managed.

This power has long drawn the interest of intelligence operatives across the globe, who have devoted considerable time and resources to spying on the microscopic Vatican—especially when it comes time to select a new Pope.

In the first half of the 20th Century, European powers commonly worked to influence the conclave ballots through their prelates and ambassadors. In return, the most political potential candidates made sure to curry favor with governments across the ideological spectrum.

During the 1939 conclave, for example, the cardinals easily elected Eugenio Pacelli despite the simmering tensions engulfing Europe as it headed toward World War II. Pacelli offered a little something to all factions: he was Italian, spoke German, and had negotiated concordats with Italy and Germany, abstaining from condemning either regime. Meanwhile, he was also a notorious anti-communist, which had endeared him to his anti-Nazi predecessor Pius XI, and also enabled him to successfully engender trust from the British and the French.

The next four conclaves took place during the Cold War, which, given the global nature of the struggle between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, the sky-high stakes, and the power of the Vatican, drew the attention of both superpowers. Their intelligence operatives scrambled to keep their governments appraised of what might happen, and what the new Pope’s diplomatic posture might be.

When Pope John XXIII died in June 1963, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) sent a memo to President John F. Kennedy outlining what might happen. It explained that it was even harder than usual to predict the conclave outcome, because the college of cardinals had grown from 55 members in 1958, the last time a conclave had taken place, to 82.

Many of the cardinals were new to their role, and it was much harder to identify their ideology than it had been in 1958 when, as the CIA explained, the cardinals fell into three major groups: “Liberal, Conservative, or Moderate.” The memo further noted that John XXIII had named 44 cardinals, some of whom were “far from being in the Liberal group.”

The memo concluded that Cardinal Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini, defined in the memo as “among the strongly committed Liberals” would enter the conclave “as the favorite of the masses.” And the CIA proved right; his fellow cardinals selected Montini as Pope Paul VI.

The memo judged it “unlikely” that the cardinals would select a non-Italian pope. And after ruling out candidates older than John, that left only 13 candidates. Of these, several seemed improbable candidates because, in the estimation of the CIA, “they are known as definite opponents of Pope John’s policies.”

Perhaps, because of intelligence agencies’ capacity to correctly assess the internal dynamics of the Vatican like this, when Paul VI died 15 years later, the Camerlengo—the Cardinal in charge of organizing the transition—was intent on protecting the conclave from any possible espionage. He asked the director of the Vigilanza (the Vatican’s internal security service), to ensure that there would be no microphones.

According to Gordon Thomas and Max Morgan-Witts' 1984 book Pontiff, the Vigilanza discovered that despite their caution, enterprising Radio Vatican journalists desirous of an international scoop engineered an audacious plan: they affixed a small transmitter in the shape of a shirt button on the clothes of a conclave staffer. It couldn’t capture voices directly, but it could send signals, like Morse code. The assistant was supposed to tap three times when the Pope was chosen.

After successfully thwarting this scheme, the Vatican security services were on the look out for radio transmitters or microphones during the subsequent four conclaves in August and October 1978, 2005, and 2013. Their efforts largely preserved the secrecy of the first three of these conclaves. But in 2013, like many other European states, the Vatican became a victim of the U.S. National Security Agency’s “big ears”.

That year, the Italian weekly, Panorama, stated that the cardinals and even Pope Benedict XVI had been the targets of bugging. The U.S. government formally denied all accusations of spying.

PAROLIN TAKES THE LEAD!!!

by Anonymousreply 140May 7, 2025 8:41 PM

An Italian cardinal once tainted by a secret deal with China over the appointment of Catholic bishops has emerged as the favourite to be elected pope.

Pietro Parolin, 70, is a seasoned diplomat who served under Pope Francis as secretary of state – effectively the prime minister of the Vatican City State.

The odds of him being elected as the successor to the late pope when 133 cardinals enter the Sistine Chapel on Wednesday at the start of the conclave are now at 9/4, according to British bookmaker William Hill.

Cardinal Parolin has moved ahead of the previous favourite, Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, despite some in the Catholic Church being highly critical of the confidential accord that he negotiated with China’s authoritarian regime.

Catholics in China are split into two camps – those who are members of an underground church that is loyal to Rome and the pope, and those who belong to a state-sanctioned church that refuses to accept the authority of the pontiff.

Under the deal, struck in 2018 and since renewed several times, Chinese officials were given some input into bishops who are appointed by the Vatican. Critics said the agreement sold out those Catholics who are loyal to Rome and represented a capitulation to Beijing.

But that has not stopped the cardinal from moving to the front of the pack as cardinals from around the world prepare to vote in the first round of the conclave on Wednesday afternoon.

“If I had to put all my money on red, it’s Parolin, Parolin, Parolin. I am pretty certain that he will win,” a Vatican insider told The Telegraph.

“He is attractive because everybody knows him. Everyone has encountered him as a gentle, friendly, balanced, agreeable diplomatic person who knows his way around the Vatican, who has handled things for 10 years. He is reliable and he is not too aggressively Right and not too aggressively Left.

“If he becomes pope there will be no trouble, no problems, no crisis. He is not going to be a charismatic pope, he will be very dry and diplomatic. But people are looking for safety – we had surprises and charisma for 12 years (under Francis). People want to see the Vatican repaired. They want order to be restored.”

A cardinal who is a member of the Curia, the Holy See’s governing body, said: “Parolin is looking like he has the best hand to play. He’s not a divisive candidate and he is picking up votes. The Americans have faith in him. And as a moderate, he can reassure the conservatives on preserving the traditions of the Church. He can also guarantee to the progressives that he won’t roll back Francis’s initiatives,” he told La Stampa newspaper. “He is seen as a ‘first among equals’ rather than someone who wants to be in command on his own.”

by Anonymousreply 144May 7, 2025 9:32 PM

Interestingly, Pietro Parolin's first name translates to Peter, in English.

Would he be Pope Peter II?

That would be interesting, because of St. Malachy's prophecy about the last Pope:

[quote] The St. Malachy's Prophecy claims to predict all future popes, and the last pope listed is said to be "Peter the Roman," who will supposedly reign during a time of great tribulation and end the world.

[quote] The Prophecy's Claim:

[quote] The prophecy claims to list all popes from the 12th century until the end of time.

[quote] The Last Pope:

[quote] The prophecy states that "Peter the Roman" will be the final pope, reigning during a period of intense persecution and the end of the world.

That kind of lines up, with Donald Trump as President.

Oooooh, scary!

by Anonymousreply 153May 8, 2025 5:29 AM

[quote] In doctrine, Parolin maintains the traditional dogmas of the Church regarding same-sex marriage and euthanasia, while retaining an openness in revising the Catholic Discipline that surround clerical celibacy.

by Anonymousreply 157May 8, 2025 8:18 AM

who’s wearing the magic ruby slippers?

by Anonymousreply 158May 8, 2025 8:43 AM

There was this one African cardinal yesterday whose red vestment wasn't the same shade of red as the other cardinals (ordered from Wish?) and he forgot to place his hand on the Book of the Gospels as he took the oath of secrecy. So a chaplain quickly reacted before he could walk away, grabbed his hand, and placed it on the book. In front of everyone, of course. Slightly embarrassing.

I just rewatched the relevant portions of Conclave and they kinda nailed the visuals. Except for the Book, which looks cheaper in real life. And there are more tables at the end than in the movie, though I understand why they couldn't get 100+ red costumes.

Meh. He looks like an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 287May 8, 2025 5:24 PM

[quote]In 2000, Prevost allowed Father James Ray, an Augustinian priest, to reside at St. John Stone Friary in Chicago. Ray had been suspended from public ministry since 1991 due to credible accusations of sexual abuse of minors. Although the priory was close to a Catholic elementary school, Prevost did not notify the school administration about Ray. The Augustinians noted that Ray was assigned a monitor while at St. John Stone. Ray was moved to a different residence in 2002 when the US Conference of Catholic Bishops adopted stricter rules for handling priests accused of abusing minors.[12][13][a]

[quote]Prevost has faced criticism from advocates for clergy abuse survivors regarding his handling of sexual abuse allegations during his leadership in the Augustinian order and in Peru. The advocacy group SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) has alleged that Prevost failed to act against abuse claims involving Richard McGrath, a former president of Providence Catholic High School, allowing him to remain in his position despite longstanding accusations.[28]

Leo is an interesting name to take. Pre Vatican II, but the last Leo was Leo XIII who was very iffy about capitalism and would not at all be a fan of this whole crazy ass financial world we've created all over the globe. I'm assuming that's intentional, but I guess we'll see as this whole thing gets analyzed to death.

by Anonymousreply 334May 8, 2025 5:42 PM

On Prevost's twitter he retweeted other Catholic officials who showed support for George Floyd's family. He had a recent retweet of another Catholic official slamming the Trump administration regarding deportation.

This is guy probably less liberal/progressive than Francis, but is probably a conservative or moderate type who finds Trump to be repulsive.

Non-Catholic politicians in countries will use religious support from the Catholic church for policies regarding abortion, gay marriage etc.

Like it or not, there are over 1 billion catholics in the world in positions of authority and power in politics, business, and all sorts of other roles.

The pope may not have direct power, but where he leads, the catholic church follows.

by Anonymousreply 376May 8, 2025 6:19 PM

by Anonymousreply 377May 8, 2025 6:21 PM

R377, it’s more likely that one of Pope Leo’s jobs will be to make sure the U.S. church is not an annex of Trumpworld.

[quote] Conservative Catholics in the US will go nuts. Good!

I was raised Catholic, but my parents (dad is deceased) are/were moderates who leaned left and have always voted Democrat in POTUS elections. I grew up with a mix of moderate, liberal, and conservative Catholics in my family and at the parish I attended with my family. Most conservative Catholics I know/knew are some of the worst people to ever be around. They are anti-choice when it comes to reproductive rights, but will bitch to no end if poor single mothers get resources like WIC or food stamps. They want babies to be born, but they don't want resources for those babies.

I follow Sean Duffy, Rachel Cuntos Duffy, and their brat daughter Evita on social media for laughs. They pride themselves on being Catholic and Rachel has pics on instagram of her kids dressed up the Virgin Mary, Joan of Arc, and deceased Popes. But, the Duffys hate poor people/helping the poor, and they don't like Catholics who promote climate change initiatives and are supportive of immigrant communities. Rachel Cuntos had a history of referring to Pope Francis as "Woke Francis" on social media. That's laughable because while Pope Francis was pretty liberal on many things, he didn't call for women to be ordained as priests and was still against abortion. Pope Francis wasn't woke like Cuntos claimed he was. . Little brat Evita Duff posted a "habemus papam" tweet when the white smoke came out. But, the brat is staying quiet after the reveal. Evita and her asswipe parents Sean and Rachel along with many conservative Catholics probably aren't happy at all with the first American pope. I'm glad for it because they didn't get what they want and if Pope Leo is very healthy, he could have a papacy of 20-30 years.

by Anonymousreply 382May 8, 2025 6:35 PM

So I’m thinking they chose him because of his connections to South America and Europe and his connection to Francis and less because he is an American.

He was born here, but has lived abroad the majority of his life.

At least that is the information I have so far. Please correct me if I’m wrong. ☺️

Plus the phrase “you could have knocked me over with a feather” applies here. I was genuinely shocked and disappointed, honestly.

We will hear more about him as the days go on and we will be able to see the reasonings behind his being chosen. 😇

by Anonymousreply 383May 8, 2025 6:40 PM

R402 That's too sensible of a post to have been written by Trump. The lack of "I"and "me" is a dead giveaway or someone else "edited" it to remove the rants.

by Anonymousreply 405May 8, 2025 7:43 PM

TBH, I'm surprised how tame and un self-referential it is. There is only one use of the first person.

by Anonymousreply 406May 8, 2025 7:47 PM

r405, I was thinking the exact, same thing.

by Anonymousreply 414May 8, 2025 7:57 PM

Everyone, including Trump, the governor, everyone who has ever had any connection with Leo, is going to do spin on how his selection reflects well on their realm, their entity. There’s nothing unusual or bad about that.

by Anonymousreply 415May 8, 2025 8:00 PM

He does look like a pope should look. I mean, if you had cast him as a bit player in “Conclave” he’d fit right in.

[quote] Do any of these rightwing Catholics go to church? The eulogies *should* be chock-a-block full of the importance of giving to the needy and poor. How do they miss that lesson?!

They probably go, but just don't listen to those messages/lessons. There are some Catholic priests who don't really spread the message of helping the needy or poor. There are MAGA priests, bishops, and cardinals like fucking Dolan who like Trump.

Catholicism and American politics are a complicated mix. Right wing Catholics are often very obsessed with subjects like abortion, but they are opposed to social safety net programs that aid single mothers or poor families. There are right wing Catholics who also heavily object to the church helping immigrant communities. Right wing/Republican Catholics are often pro death penalty which the Catholic Church is opposed to. Many Catholic Democrats who are liberal or moderates are often berated by the right wing crowd for being pro-choice or assisting people in other countries or immigrant communities. Some Catholic Democrats who are elected officials have been banned by archbishops from receiving communion in some areas due to pro-choice beliefs. But, Catholic Republicans like DeSantis and others are support the death penalty are never banned from getting communion. There are a small factions of Catholic Democrats who are opposed to abortion, and they usually involved with groups like Democrats for Life. Former Louisiana governor John Bel Edwards is involved with that organization. There are still some Catholic Democrats(most elderly people) who are homophobic as well.

Again, Catholicism and American politics don't mix well. It's also the same with Protestants and politics. Plenty of Protestant Democrats are pro-choice, but they are slammed by conservative Protestants when they speak out in support of reproductive rights. Raphael Warnock gets slammed because he's a pro-choice minister. A few years ago, when Michigan Congresswoman Hillary Scholten was running for Congress, she released an op ed piece where she talked about being pregnant and finding out the fetus she was carrying had turner's syndrome. She decided to go through with the pregnancy, but miscarried weeks later. Scholten is pro-choice and she felt that restrictive abortion bans would rip away rights from women with complicated pregnancies who want to terminate their pregnancies early on. Scholten talked about being Christian in her op ed piece and consulting with a pastor. She got slammed later on by anti-choice conservative Christians.

Right wing Catholics and Protestants are never going to fully win when it comes to American politics and policies. There are still states where abortion isn't banned, there are states that are likely going to remain without the death penalty, there are states that are still going to protect LGBT people. There are still going to be pro-choice and pro-LGBT people getting elected to political office.

Megyn Kelly already hates him so that's a plus. He's definitely anti-MAGA on a lot of issues it seems (perhaps one of the reasons he was selected). In 2012 he did speak out about so-called "gender ideology," so he's probably not going to be any more "positive" than Francis was on the queers and women. My guess is he'll be a pragmatic liberal in Church terms. Slightly more traditional than Francis but continuing a less showy papacy.

Europe doesn't really have a single leader, so he could work with all countries there and elsewhere as needed to advocate for peace and humane treatment. Makes you wonder how much the College of Cardinals knew about his background. He's ticking every box to piss off MAGAts: American, half black, Latino, named himself after a Pope who advocated for workers and had doubts about capitalism, sticky relationship with conservative Catholics in Peru, rebuked Vance on Twitter. I'm sure I'm missing stuff. But DAMN this looks awfully strategic on the part of the cardinals.

Even if you take out all the supernatural beliefs, which is completely reasonable, he has still suddenly become a world leader, head of a religion that roughly 1.4 billion people at least claim to be a part of. They will be looking to him, and really, a lot of other people will at least be curious what he says about some major world issues.

Yes, like every other world leader, he's just a man or woman, but still, there's suddenly a lot of power and influence there that can't just be waved away. Of course, he can't just assume anything silly like his word his law or anything like that. It's always a balancing act, pushing the world where it's somewhat ready to go, not pushing so hard that people just ignore him and get on with doing what they want. It's an interesting kind of power.

Laura Loomer, whose criticisms of Trump officials helped bring about their ouster, has a new target outside the administration: Pope Leo XIV.

The 9/11 conspiracy theorist was among those on the right who voiced their displeasure over the development of Robert Francis Prevost, an American, being elected 267th pope on Thursday, just the second day of conclave.

“He is anti-Trump, anti-MAGA, pro-open Borders, and a total Marxist like Pope Francis,” Loomer argued in a social media post. “Catholics don’t have anything good to look forward to. Just another Marxist puppet in the Vatican.”

Loomer was responding to an incident in which Prevost, in 2015, shared a Washington Post opinion piece by Cardinal Timothy Dolan titled, “Why Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric is so problematic.”

Another post by Prevost likely to generate criticism from Loomer and others is how he shared an article that called Vice President JD Vance—an adult Catholic convert—“wrong” for effectively promoting a ranking system for how to best show love for others.

And in 2017, after Trump had suspended the U.S. refugee program, Prevost reposted a tweet saying, “We’re banning all Syrian refugees? The men, women and children who *most* need help? What an immoral nation we are becoming. Jesus weeps.”

Loomer was joined in her criticism by far-right podcaster and Pizzagate promoter Jack Posobiec.

“What I’m seeing from his social media does not bode well for Trump supporters,” he said on Real America’s Voice, adding later: “God save the church.”

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, meanwhile, promoted a guest on his show who would explain why the new pope “is a continuation of the globalist takeover of the Catholic church & will be used to wage war against President Trump.”

One highly followed X user similarly responded to the news by slapping a pejorative label on the world’s Catholic leader.

“I can now officially diagnose the new Pope with a high level of ‘Trump & Vance Derangement Syndrome.’ The evidence suggests he’s a mass migration lover like Francis,” user BehizyTweets wrote.

When Robert Prevost was in the first grade, his neighbor told him he would be the first American pope, his brother told ABC News.

On Thursday, that prophecy came true, when Prevost, a 69-year-old cardinal, was elected to be the 267th pontiff -- and the first from the United States.

Before he was Pope Leo XIV, Prevost grew up the youngest of three brothers in the South Chicago suburb of Dolton.

He always wanted to be a priest, his older brother, John Prevost, told ABC News outside his home in Illinois on Thursday.

"He knew right away. I don't think he's ever questioned it. I don't think he's ever thought of anything else," John Prevost said.

As a child, Pope Leo XIV "played priest," John Prevost said. "The ironing board was the altar."

The pope is a White Sox fan, his brother confirmed. "He's a regular, run-of-the-mill person," he said.

Leo started to emerge as a front-runner for the papacy in the days before the conclave began, according to the Rev. James Martin, a papal contributor to ABC News.

John Prevost said he spoke to his brother on Tuesday, before the cardinals went into the secretive conclave, and told his younger brother that he also believed he could be the first American pope. At the time, his younger brother called it "nonsense" and "just talk," saying, "'They're not going to pick an American pope," John Prevost said.

"He just didn't believe it, or didn't want to believe it," John Prevost said.

John Prevost said he expects his brother will follow in the late Pope Francis' footsteps as a voice for the disenfranchised and poor.

"I think they were two of a kind," John Prevost said. "I think because they both were in South America at the same time -- in Peru and in Argentina -- they had the same experiences in working with missions and working with the downtrodden. So I think that's the experience that they're both coming from."

Louis Prevost, the eldest of the three Prevost brothers, was feeling under the weather and lying in bed at his home in Florida when the big moment came.

"My wife called to tell me there's white smoke from the chapel," he said.

Louis Prevost said he tuned in to the live broadcast of the Vatican announcement.

"They started reading his name, and when he went, 'blah, blah, blah, Roberto,' immediately I knew -- that's Rob," he said. "I was just thankful I was still in bed lying down, because I might have fallen down."

Louis Prevost said he got out of bed and started "dancing around like an idiot."

"It's just incredible," he said. "I'm suddenly wide awake and feeling wonderful."

He described his brother as "down to earth," someone who has a good sense of humor and is "smart as a whip." He loved his work as a missionary in Peru and being with the people, and through his work with the Vatican has traveled the world, Louis Prevost said.

"I thought I had done traveling in the Navy, but, my God, he blew me away," he said.

His brother surmised that global experience may have stood out to the other cardinals in electing him pope.

Louis Prevost said his brother seemed to always know his calling, and that as young as 4 or 5, the family knew he was destined for great things in the Catholic Church. When his brothers were playing cops and robbers, Leo would "play priest" and distribute Holy Communion with Necco wafers, Louis Prevost said.

“We used to tease him all the time -- you’re going to be the pope one day," he said. "Neighbors said the same thing. Sixty-some years later, here we are."

[quote]One of the brothers said that Pope Leo watched Conclave recently so that he’d know what the process is like.

Didn't everybody?

How soon before JD Vance kills the new pope? 🤔

[quote]Just another Marxist puppet in the Vatican.

I can only wonder who the master Marxist puppeteer is with total control of the Conclave. Loomer could make her reputation at this time by informing the world. Possibly she's holding back the name of Hunter Biden.

Capitalist hate people but find them a necessary evil.

Exactly, R508. One of us! One of us!

…according to the Italian press, it was after the third vote that Parolin called in his chits with the Italian cardinals to back Provost, who was closer to 2/3.

There’s an article, in Italian, at the Corriera della Sera site.

That article at r521 reads like a Dolan PR piece, but I can't be fair about him because I dislike him.

by Anonymousreply 523May 10, 2025 12:12 PM

Doubtless, Della, because Dolan was the source. He didn’t write it; he dictated it to the reporter.

by Anonymousreply 524May 10, 2025 12:23 PM

Dolan is a MAGA Trump ass licker.

It's been fun seeing MAGA Catholics having meltdowns regarding the new Pope.

I wonder if Loony Laura understands that Catholics believe that the Pope is chosen by God through the Holy Spirit working in the conclave. Not to defend or deny the theology, but let’s hope the faithful thus understand what an agent of Satan she actually is.

I consider myself quite the amateur tennis player,' Pope Leo told the Augustinian Order. 'Since leaving Peru I have had few occasions to practice so I am looking forward to getting back on the court [laughs]. Not that this new job has left me much free time for it so far.'

Before moving to Vatican City, Pope Leo was a Bishop in Peru for several years, having only moved away from the United States in 2014.

Who his favorite tennis players are are not known. However, two major tournaments take place not too far from the Sistine Chapel, as Wimbledon and the French Open would be short flights.

by Anonymousreply 528May 10, 2025 3:58 PM

Has anyone sent His Holiness a link to one of “The Gays and Tennis” threads?

He’d probably fit right in.

by Anonymousreply 529May 10, 2025 4:01 PM

Their orange god is Anti-Christ adjacent, r527, and they certainly don’t GAF about that.

Why the hell would those zombie cultists care what a Jigsaw looking cunt cunt has to say?

by Anonymousreply 535May 10, 2025 6:37 PM

Dolan pushed hard? He barely knew who he was.

There’s an interview Dolan gave where he says he had to be told who Prevost was. Dolan mentioned that in a previous interview Dolan did, he had been asked about the American cardinals who might be picked. He didn’t even name Prevost!

Fuck him.

by Anonymousreply 536May 10, 2025 7:16 PM

[quote]Dolan pushed hard? He barely knew who he was.

Yeah, it definitely feels like Dolan is trying to write himself into something that had very little to do with him at all.

by Anonymousreply 537May 10, 2025 7:44 PM

Hopefully, Leo tells Dolan to go eff himself.

It’s important to see who Leo is going to surround himself with.

I wonder about that rumor where they supposedly offered millions to certain cardinals to vote a certain way. Wasted money, again. 😂🤣

by Anonymousreply 538May 10, 2025 7:51 PM

Also, I think Dolan said that they didn’t really consider Robert Francis an American! Since he had been in Peru for so long.

I’ll say again, I’m glad he didn’t speak English in his opening statements.

by Anonymousreply 539May 10, 2025 7:53 PM

Dolan is part of the Catholic Fascista; he would know nothing about a Peruvian Cardinal born in Dolton IL.

Jesuits do not like Augustinians, Franciscans, Dominicans or those Benedictine simpletons.

by Anonymousreply 540May 10, 2025 8:14 PM

Is Dolan a Jesuit?

by Anonymousreply 541May 10, 2025 8:18 PM

Of course not. He’s a diocesan priest.

by Anonymousreply 542May 10, 2025 8:22 PM

R540 doesn’t know how the Catholic Church works.

by Anonymousreply 543May 10, 2025 8:24 PM

Does that mean Dolan never took a vow of poverty?

by Anonymousreply 544May 10, 2025 8:28 PM

He would not have been required to.

by Anonymousreply 545May 10, 2025 8:30 PM

[quote]Yeah, it definitely feels like Dolan is trying to write himself into something that had very little to do with him at all.

So Dolan can meet with Trump and let him think he's tight with the Pope. That makes him Trump's new best friend. Prevost was only made a cardinal in September of 2023. That's only 20 months ago. While Dolan may have known him, my bet is he didn't know him well

by Anonymousreply 546May 10, 2025 8:41 PM

While Dolan may have known him, my bet is he didn't know him well.

You lost that bet.

by Anonymousreply 547May 10, 2025 9:36 PM

How so, R547?

by Anonymousreply 548May 10, 2025 10:19 PM

He didn’t know him personally at all. He knew much of him. That’s how these things work.

by Anonymousreply 549May 10, 2025 10:25 PM

There was only one Christian, and he died on the cross.

by Anonymousreply 550May 10, 2025 10:34 PM

He was a Jew, but whatever.

by Anonymousreply 551May 10, 2025 10:35 PM

Pseudo-Christians r553? You mean those SouthernBaptistChurchofChristSnakeHandlers and Mormons?

by Anonymousreply 554May 11, 2025 2:49 PM

Dolan is a blowhard.

by Anonymousreply 555May 11, 2025 5:09 PM

You can infer that Dolan’s role was to solidify support of the US cardinals, along with the South American cardinals, that quickly morphed into wave of support.
