Smithsonian Begins Removing Exhibits, Artifacts From African American History Museum

The majority voted for this. I don't know what to say beyond that, other than it might be time to stop getting upset over every single thing because we're not even 10% into this term yet.

One of the most popular and moving displays is the one devoted to Emmett Till's coffin; if Trump's minions attempt to shut it down, expect big protests.
Unless they try to claim that Till just accidentally fell into Tallahatchie River.

by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 27, 2025 7:37 PM |
I hope what is being removed is preserved somewhere, somehow. We cannot afford to lose our past -even if we have done a very poor job of learning from it.
Not black, but I am literally sick over this.

We don't know the future. Maybe we're more like 90 percent into his term and just don't know it yet.

I am NOT standing up for the idiots who voted for this administration, but I seriously don't think the majority were voting for THIS. They were foolish/stupid/ignorant enough to believe that egg prices would come down and things would improve for them. They weren't voting on culture wars as much as economic hardships. Sure, the rest of us saw this coming -because we listened and put the pieces together. We can play the blame game forever, but it won't help us to solve the problem. We need to get people united with the goal of ending this regime as quickly as possible.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 27, 2025 7:44 PM |
This is awful. Black and Native American history should be preserved and available to all.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 27, 2025 7:48 PM |
Economic issues were cited by many voters, R11, but we can't separate MAGA from racism and hatred of immigrants.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 27, 2025 8:21 PM |
"Economic issues were cited by many voters......"
So they voted for the asshole who caused their retirement savings to shrink exponentially in his first 100 days in office?
If ever a situation warranted that people truly get what they deserve, this is the one.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 27, 2025 8:31 PM |
I hope this is circulated all over black platforms so the 20% of black folk who voted for Trump can see what they've done.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 27, 2025 8:32 PM |
MAGAts are getting exactly what they deserve. Unfortunately, those of us with functioning brains are also getting screwed.

Maybe three months ago, I was standing in line at the Walmart to pay for my groceries behind (I think) a Puerto Rican woman. Because I'm practicing my Spanish whenever I get the chance, I struck up a conversation with her. I mentioned that they're putting in a new Tractor Supply store up the road from me, and now the small, local, and very helpful independent hardware store is almost out of business. And she said, with big eyes and in all earnestness, "Oh, I'm sure they'll be fine! Trump will help them! He knows we're the people who voted for him, and he's going to take care of us."
Lord love a duck.

As George Orwell once noted, conservatives are obsessed with re-writing the past. They return to it, over and over, trying to get the result they want.

A Spanish friend was staying at a Marriott for an extended trip around the time of the election. Being naturally curious, he spoke to a number of the hotel's Latino employees to get their opinions on Dump.
They overwhelmingly voted for Dump.

I found the African American History Museum always relatively restrained with respect to politics and ideology. Compared to certain arts museums at least. I can’t imagine that they touch the slavery and Civil Rights section.

They really are doing the most to get Black people riled up enough to protest en masse so they can turn the hoses and German Shepherds loose on them and hang them from live oak trees again.
I am so happy Black people haven't risen to the bait so far. When they (especially Black women) declared "We are fucking DONE with this" after 11/5/24, I was thrilled.
"Oh, Black people, please come protest march with us--we Latinos are getting disrespected and mistreated by Trump!" "Oh Black people, we need you to protest with us Muslims--we're being treated unfairly by Trump!" "Ooh, Black women, we really need your help--Trump is rolling the clock back on (White) women's rights!"
Nope.

How can longtime American institutions just crumble to these ridiculous “Executive Orders?” Arent these for important stuff like wartime powers? It also seems unconstitutional (MAGA territory).

r37 Uh, you're 100% wrong. We need to get out in the streets and protest. Bring it on. We can't be silent and let them roll over us.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 28, 2025 5:22 AM |
It's personal.
I was last in the US just before Covid, and I remember that the climax of the African American History museum's regular exhibition was Obama becoming President. We know how well that goes down with the present administration.
I can't remember--does the museum also cover the Central Park Five? Another exceedingly low point in Dump's snake-low career.

Defunding NPR and PBS has been a long time goal of Republicans. In much of America NPR is the only thing on the air that provides a modicum of intelligent information/entertainment. Take that away and you've got right wing talk show propaganda, right wing religious propaganda, and country music performed by and for right wingers.

What an accomplishment. Mankind is at the apex of worshiping money over all else. In the next few decades mankind will begin officially making fewer people in order to make more money. At a certain point, with enough starving, wealthy landowners will almost certainly make slaves out of those who still seek status and power in this world. All because we can't deal with the boredom of participating in a truly fair system, not even a partially fair one.

[quote] The Trump administration is proposing not to renew a $64 million payment to Howard University. The money, a one time payment made to build the Howard University Hospital, is no longer needed with construction complete, the administration said in its budget proposal released Friday.
[quote] Howard is the nation’s only federally chartered historically Black college or university (HBCU).
[quote] The budget proposal comes days after Trump signed an order establishing a White House initiative on HBCUs to “deliver high-quality education to a growing number of students.” Earlier this week, the president also told NewsNation that HBCUs should not be concerned about federal funding cuts to their budgets.

R40, you are correct that we need to be in the streets, but with one caveat. Those who are most targeted by police violence should *not* be, which is black people. I don’t know how steeped you are in black culture, but the overall mood I’ve observed (I am not black) is that the majority of black voters do not want to go into the streets because that truly is what Dump wants. They want to be violent with blacks and are just waiting for the right opportunity. If black people so much as set foot on the pavement, all hell will break loose.
All of these violations against black culture are meant to provoke them. But black people have seen this shit before, and are wisely telling their people, especially their younger adults, to not take the bait. 92% of black women voted for Harris, and though I can’t remember the numbers for black men, it was much much higher than white men and white women, so they’ve already done their job. Now it’s our turn to show our black brothers/sisters that we will indeed fight in the streets against all forms of oppression. If anyone should be getting violently attacked by police right now, it’s the white people who FAILED to control their own people.
Yes — I am white. I’ve fought my whole life for human rights, and yet I am ashamed that I didn’t do so much more. I did not understand just how huge our racism is, still to this day. It is shocking to me, even now. We failed our fellow Americans. White people need to get their fat asses into the streets, write/call/fax/message Congress, and boycott the fuck out if every single corporation supporting them. Use the power of your wallet to fight back, and do not comply in advance. Refuse to budge. Make every single move they try impossible to execute. I’ve seen citizens form human chains around vehicles to block ICE from entering properties — “do not comply in advance.”
FUCK them. If our country is going down in flames, I’m going to go down fighting.

As AOC said, the problem is that people don't take him seriously and that many that voted for him probably didn't believe that he'd actually do anything he has done.
You could see it in the media before he was a elected and you can still see it now.
Even, "they're eating the dogs, they're eating the cats," was made into a cute meme but no, he actually believes it and he wasn't "joking."
