I don't get it

What's weird is this really is a thing. When judges sentence people they look at their 'rap sheet' and decide the sentence partially based on who they think is the most likely to reoffend. Sometimes they face the individual in person. When judges do NOT meet the person their estimates on the likelihood of recidivism is MORE accurate than when they have a personal interaction.
It's counterintuitive--we think meeting a person is necessary to judge their character when that more often leads you astray. Winston Churchill saw this happening and vowed never to meet the Fuher under any circumstance.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 21, 2025 4:43 PM |
Brilliant.
Hitler, who is only shown in states of agitation and hysteria for good reasons could apparently be quite charming as a person. Wonder if Maher is aware of that.

R9 is too dumb to appreciate historical information.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 22, 2025 1:06 AM |
R8, that may be the only recoding of Hitler's normal speaking voice. The shouting, the wild gestures, the hair flying, everything we see in his filmed speeches were rehearsed effects.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 22, 2025 1:27 AM |
r9 really is a moron.

Seeing Vince Vaughn as MAGA the other day reminded me of Larry. Vaughn can join Cheryl on the "not invited back" list of characters should Curb come back (heard that there's a slim possibility it might). Fuck Cheryl and fuck Freddie Funkhouser.

R14 Vince Vaughn is MAGA? First I hear of that. Any receipts?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 22, 2025 6:13 AM |
R11 You are correct. It is the only such recording. Hitler’s thick Bavarian accent is conspicuous, as is of course his mendacity when explaining his reasoning for going to war, etc.

Plus, a vegetarian = kind to ALL animals!
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 22, 2025 8:30 AM |
R11, they were many rehearsed effects and the films are often sped up a bit to make him look even more frantic (for Allied propaganda reasons). There is very little of the "normal Hitler" preserved or accessible, for good reasons. For once, he did not want to be seen as "normal", was never photographed with his glasses on, for instance. But it is well documented that he could be charming and personable in small social settings, such as dinners, which makes the Maher Monolog all the more frightening.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 22, 2025 2:48 PM |
R11, its a much modified Austrian accent, he sometimes sounds like an older man in a Viennese Kaffehaus. Definitely not Bavarian.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 22, 2025 2:49 PM |
Well, this isn't really about that dinner. It's about the next one. Because this is the modern left. It's an attempt always to intimidate people into not ever doing it again.
It’s to silence yourselves or we'll do it for you. That's the purpose of this op ed, so that the next comedian or the next person on the American left chooses not to speak to Donald Trump.
This is all an effort to get people not to do what Maher did, which is to talk to each other and our political leaders. This is how the modern left enforces obedience: torch one person in public—so no one else dares step out of line.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 22, 2025 3:03 PM |
Kindly fuck the hell off, you idiot at R20.
Trump and the MAGAts would rather shit on your face than speak to you. The only reason Trump deigned to speak with Maher is because Maher has a national TV show.
Good luck in your quest for "dialogue" with Trump and MAGAts. I can assure you it will be a short conversation, with Trump and the MAGAts doing the talking and you doing the listening.

It always surprises me that people expect dictators and heads of Mafia and major criminal heads to be these cartoon characters of evil 100% of the time.
You do not get into that position by being hateful, mean and evil - it's not a winning strategy, ever. You have to be able to manipulate, control and inspire people as well in order to get your way.
People watch cartoons or movies of these supervillans that are so one-dimensional. But dictators and criminals and others have families, friends, parents, etc.
When you meet someone and interact with them, you want to give them the benefit of the doubt if they are reciprocal. I think that's human nature - but it's a trap that narcissists and psychopaths prey upon.

Now that Larry David has made a jack ass out of Maher, will Maher finally go the fuck away and stay away?
Only Maher's huge ego knows for sure.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 22, 2025 3:19 PM |
Right, R24, it's not that Hitler was biting into the carpet all the time or had a "Downfall" moment every day. He was a master manipulator and knew how to project "warmth" and "human touch" to those he wanted to fool. Just look at the show the Nazis put on for the Olympics in 1936.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 22, 2025 8:18 PM |
R23, Hitler killed 6 million Jews. Trump may have killed 6 million Big Mac’s, but it’s not the same thing. Get it?
If Trump is literally Hitler, why did Larry David participate in an SNL skit with Trump himself,, poking fun at all the people who insist he’s the most racist person on Earth? Surely that’s worse than having dinner for 2 hours with the man.
Democrats have no platform, a serious messaging problem, disastrous approval rating, no real leader, and continue to dig their heels into unpopular issues. Instead of calling everyone a Nazi that disagrees with you, you’ve got to come up with a better plan. You will only continue to lose, but you’re not getting the hint.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 22, 2025 8:49 PM |
R20, what an idiotic post. Dump isn’t interested in any dialogue, or reason, or compromise. He doesn’t give a shit what anyone says, especially Dems. Dems could be kissing his ass (like despicable Repukes) and Dump could not care less. Where have you been the last 10 years?

Trump is responsible for hundreds of thousands of covid deaths, the foreign death toll from his dismantling of USAID rises every day, and the long-term effects of his policies will kill many Americans in the years to come.

“the foreign death toll from his dismantling of USAID rises every day, and the long-term effects of his policies will kill many Americans in the years to come.”

by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 22, 2025 9:10 PM |
R28, where have I been the last 10 years? Unfortunately, it’s been listening to insufferable people like you proclaiming that Trump is Hitler, and that now a democratically elected president is a fascist dictator. People like you have made me feel like we already suffered 8 years of Trump, and we still have 4 to go. If you think it’s a thought crime for Bill Maher to sit down with someone who is politically opposed to him and have a civilized conversation, that’s on you. You’re only helping that side win, so keep it up.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 22, 2025 9:18 PM |
I would agree he's more Mussolini than Hitler. He has no big plan, just really loves the attention and the crowds and even now all the mentions of himself. You'd think it would get boring after awhile, but it never will for him.
Even on immigration, his big, big cause, he's content to fuck around with deporting a few thousand accused, or really assumed, criminals, with no evidence presented just cause it's fun for him and gets a ton of attention. There is no big plan to actually deport millions of illegal immigrants, which would disrupt things and cause problems for rich people in agribusiness, and even worse his mobster buddies in construction. Can't have that, so we get these big dramatic shows where Trump gets to look like an asshole and morons praise him for his toughness and asshole tendencies.
And like Mussolini, there will be no shortage of fools and dingbats trying to find a real person who cares about things underneath all the bullshit. There isn't. The bullshit is the entire point of the regime.

I don't think Bill Maher will ever fully recover from this. And he shouldn't. He flipped out, again, when it was brought up on Fridays episode.

[quote] Well, this isn't really about that dinner. It's about the next one. Because this is the modern left. It's an attempt always to intimidate people into not ever doing it again.
I really hope we don't FF this poster because this is a classic case of the reversal strategy we need to highlight.
Trump is suing the media for billions because he didn't like a segment---the media caves. Trump is withholding billions to Universities because protests, unless they break into the Capitol, scare him. Major universities cave. Yet this poster calls out Larry David, a comedian--a man with no authority to financially cripple institutions and media outlets--of intimidation.
This is how autocrats obscure their agenda. Trump's not the bully, Larry David and the left are. Never mind that neither one has any power to intimidate anyone except jittery, defensive, water-carriers for a man who encourages violence, extremism while making sinister threats of military retaliation everywhere. And do not forget, as far as comparing Trump to a mad dictator and how bad that makes you feel, Trump is serious about running for a third term. Oh, and Hitler was also democratically-elected.
This is not a man you dine with and marvel that he doesn't eat with his fingers. As Maher figured, this is a man you have dinner with because if you don't, you're on the menu.

Reading comprehension is usually completed by the third grade, R27. I am sorry you missed that important developmental marker, but it is unsurprising given your solipsistic behaviors here. I called YOU a Nazi, not Felonious Fatty. I do believe you are a Nazi, as are many in the GQP these days. Their presence and outrageous demonstrations are well documented. Your mewling repetition of Russian disinformation and fascist talking points are meaningless here, and only document your colossal ignorance about our disappearing Rule of Law, self imposed economic crisis, and fading democracy. Calling you a name wasn’t the point, labeling your extreme views was the point. Dialogue with Nazis (or sociopaths) is pointless and impossible. I am not sure how you found us here, but I suggest you drive your government funded hoveround back over to the Daily Stormer where your pimply Quisling ass will be welcomed with open arms. We are already full up on crazy here.

R42 Maher might not be telling the whole story, as to the real reason he met Trump.
What Bill didn't mention: possible pressure from his boss, HBO owner David Zaslav. Maybe there were threats of cancellation. Also, Maher could be deprived of his regular stand-up specials, which bring him lots of cash!

PEPFAR Impact Tracker, estimated deaths due to USAID cuts, January 24 to today: 38,515 adults and 4,100 children.
NYT, April 11: At least five children and three adults with cholera died as they went in search of treatment in South Sudan after aid cuts by the Trump administration shuttered local health clinics during the country's worst cholera outbreak in decade.

R48 Only that we now know Elon is a direct descendant of Nazis who fled Germany for South Africa when Hitler's downfall was in motion.

I'm open to "speak to the other side" arguments and don't think political foes should demonize each other. But I don't think that applies to having a chummy dinner with Trump and his cast of clowns at this point in the shit show.
Bill Maher's biggest mistake was his "book report" on the visit in which he marvelled at how nice Trump was, that he listened, that he laughed at himself. Total dope. Good on Larry David for skewering him.
