[QUOTE] Attorney General Pam Bondi is directing federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione if he is convicted of the December murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, she announced in a statement Tuesday.
I guess she wants to make it harder for the jury to convict him.
Another OJ situation and he’ll walk?

I'm certainly not looking to see him killed. There is no question that he did kill the guy so "walking" is highly unlikely.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 1, 2025 4:35 PM |
R6 It really isn't. It was one crackpot with a gun, thinking he'd make some broader point about healthcare costs by killing that man.
If that's terrorism, then what about all the examples of misogynists who murder their wives and say "All women deserve it?" What about all the bank robbers who commit a violent robbery to take resources from the rich? What about the rapist who simply needed to express his sexual urges?
Every criminal has an excuse, a motive, a rationalization. If we start labeling it all as terrorism, then eventually, everything will be.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 1, 2025 4:36 PM |
Explain this to me since I'm legally obtuse - is this a possibility since it's a Federal case? Doesn't the fact that it's being tried in New York, a state that's abolished the death penalty, mean anything?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 1, 2025 4:39 PM |
R13 Federal courts still have the death penalty. It's only very rarely applied - Timothy McVeigh, the Boston Marathon bomber, the kid who shot up that Black church in Charleston, etc. - and usually only for grievous acts of political or religious terrorism and mass murder.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 1, 2025 4:46 PM |
There are state and federal charges, R13. When it comes to the federal charges, it doesn’t matter where you’re tried. The long arm of the federal death penalty can reach you in all 50 states.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 1, 2025 4:48 PM |
For context: Four American Presidents have been assassinated in office. Two of the four assassins were killed before they could be tried for the crime, and the other two were convicted and executed by the court of the state in which the killing occurred (Guiteau in Washington, DC, and Czolgosz in New York State). Lee Harvey Oswald was set to be tried for murder by a Texas court. John Wilkes Booth probably would've been tried under Army rules, given the active Civil War at the time.
If a man who kills the president can be tried by a state court, then why not a man who kills a business executive? The federal offenses are thin - he stalked the victim and crossed state lines to kill him. But Trump wants this case to go federal BECAUSE New York has no death penalty. He and Bondi want this kid to fry.

KFA's statement:
[quote] “By seeking to murder Luigi Mangione, the Justice Department has moved from the dysfunctional to the barbaric. Their decision to execute Luigi is political and goes against the recommendation of the local federal prosecutors, the law, and historical precedent. While claiming to protect against murder, the federal government moves to commit the pre-meditated, state-sponsored murder of Luigi. By doing this, they are defending the broken, immoral, and murderous healthcare industry that continues to terrorize the American people. We are prepared to fight these federal charges, brought by a lawless Justice Department, as well as the New York State charges, and the Pennsylvania charges, and anything else they want to pile on Luigi. This is a corrupt web of government dysfunction and one-upmanship. Luigi is caught in a high-stakes game of tug-of-war between state and federal prosecutors, except the trophy is a young man’s life.”

There’s a mystery for the ages.

I think Biden wanted to leave as few prisoners on death row as possible so Trump couldn't go on another spree like he did before leaving office in January 2021. IIRC, most of the executions occurred between election day and Biden's inauguration.
[QUOTE]In July 2020, the first federal execution under the presidency of Donald Trump was carried out, the first after a 17-year hiatus. He may well go to trial, but if even one juror holds out, he will not get the death penalty. The current DOJ could nullify that verdict, but appeals would go on for years, and Trump is not likely to be around long enough to pursue this to the end (since he is the one aggressively pressing this, both to ‘protect’ capitalism and to fuck over New York, which has no death penalty). And his horrible minions will abruptly find themselves out of jobs once he goes, via election or death.
I doubt any presidential successor, especially a Democrat, would go along with execution, it would be safer to allow for life in prison, with or without parole..

It was estimated that 30,000 to 50,000 people in the US die each year from health insurance companies denying and delaying procedures and medicine that is that is vital to people's health and even their lives. Being sad that a CEO who's setting these policies was gunned down is like being sad that a cartel boss was killed. The difference is the cartel boss is responsible for less than 1% of deaths compared to what this CEO was responsible for. No, shooting a person vigilante style should not be tolerated, but neither should the killing tens of thousands each year to further maximize your company profits and get yourself a few million dollars in annual bonuses.

All I want for Xmas is Luigi to "get a deal" where he gets out long enough to "dispatch" that Strumpet. Luigi has to be a better shot than those two so-called 'assassins". The problem with hot Luigi walking is that he can go kill someone else later.
That man who was killed left behind a wife and two sons who most likely love and miss him deeply.
Don't get me wrong. I hate the medical system in this country but has this resulted in other CEO's saying 'hey we have to do better!'
by Anonymous | reply 151 | April 22, 2025 6:12 PM |
R151 Annually there are tens of thousands of people covered by health insurance that are repeatedly and unjustly delayed and denied approval to cover procedures, doctor visits and pharmaceuticals that result in their condition worsening and dying. This is due to insurance company policies set by CEO to maximize their profits, which of course result in large million dollar bonuses for them every year.
Excuse me if I prefer to shed a few tears to the thousands that do not need to die each year over a CEO who is the catalyst for their deaths.

by Anonymous | reply 154 | April 22, 2025 6:59 PM |
The coverage is stated in each insurance company terms and conditions. Almost all the claims they delay and deny are in fact covered. But they violate it anyway under the guise of internal policy of making sure the claims are legitimate. In the meantime people get worse and die.

For the record, ever since the arrest of Luigi there have been rumors and reports that he at the very least had an accomplice due to a series of inexplicable moments leading up to the shooting. Inconsistent eyewitness statements about actions of the shooter. The fact that the gunman arrived outside the New York Hilton hotel about five minutes before Thompson walked down the street. How did the gunman know Brian Thompson was going to be walking down the street in that exact moment?
Thompson's wife said that he told her that he had been receiving multiple threats against his life in the weeks before his murder. These stories have been around since December when Mangione was first arrested.

[quote] Do posters on DL talk about people that they actually know?
Well, they certainly talk a lot about topics they know nothing about. Without doing any further research, either. It's weird how people think they have this case all figured out before it even goes to trial. There are many loose ends so far, and if they manage to get a conviction, it won't be because all the evidence was looked at.
I'm not saying Luigi is innocent. I'm saying that I don't think he acted completely on his own, nor do I think this agenda is all his own. He wasn't even a member of United Healthcare, which raises more questions about his real motive. His mother filed a missing persons report about a month before the Thompson shooting because she hadn't seen or heard from her son in several months. His friends didn't know where he was either, and he was inactive on social media. Where was he all that time? How long had he been planning this? How did he know Thompson's schedule and the exact moment he would be walking down the street?
There's more to this story that probably won't be revealed until the trial. The healthcare industry in this country is very powerful. There's a reason why they want to kill this young man. Surface level cunts want to call people names when they refuse to go deeper. That's a moron.

R208 any stats? Maybe we should start killing doctors
Researchers from Johns Hopkins Hospital published the results of a comprehensive study on medical errors. This study estimated that medical errors result in 250,000 deaths each year.
This estimate ranks medical malpractice as the third leading cause of death in the United States, behind heart disease and cancer. A prior study done in 2009 estimated the number of medical error fatalities per year at 200,000.
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has offered a more antiquated statistic of 98,000 deaths yearly due to medical negligence. That number was so shocking when it came out ten years ago. Now the statistics show we have twice the number of malpractice deaths than we thought. Yet no one really blinks an eye. The story goes on page 5 of your local newspaper. And then it is gone.

You’re comparing medical negligence to outright murder, R211? Before Obamacare, health insurance companies were committing outright executions. R241 It may be a classic defense but, in this case, it's not going to work. Besides Luigi's defense is very weak. This man wasn't threatening him in any way and mental-case Mangione had no connection whatsoever either to the man he assassinated or to the company that the CEO worked for
What facts R242 the video speaks for itself
by Anonymous | reply 243 | September 25, 2025 11:38 PM |
A notebook authorities said they recovered from Mangione allegedly described his intent to “wack” an insurance executive. The writings will be used to argue a motive, Galperin says.
The second-degree murder prosecution can move forward, Carro ruled, because the DA had "presented sufficient evidence that Mangione 'murdered Brian Thompson in a premeditated and calculated execution.'"
"The Manhattan DA's office had, I think, a good-faith basis to think in terms of acts of terrorism, and indeed, they got a grand jury to vote the acts of terrorism," Galperin says. "However, I think the judge's dismissal is well reasoned and well founded."
A spokesperson for Bragg’s office said in a written statement Tuesday, "We respect the Court’s decision and will proceed on the remaining nine counts, including murder in the second degree." For that charge alone, Mangione faces a sentence of 25 years to life if convicted.
"I prosecuted many murder cases, and this is very much an uphill battle," Galperin says. "What would be a viable defense for him?"
by Anonymous | reply 244 | September 25, 2025 11:43 PM |

[quote]Besides Luigi's defense is very weak.
Irrelevant, Luigi will win some sort of freedom on technicalities or jury nullification because of violations of law which it appears the prosecution has already committed openly and the judge is starting to take notice.
Had they treated him like every other murder in the city of NYC which happens every single day of the year there, it probably would have been a slam dunk. Instead they trippled down, made a show of it like he was some kind of mass murderer and bungled and lied at every step. [Quote] Irrelevant, Luigi will win some sort of freedom on technicalities or jury nullification because of violations of law which it appears the prosecution has already committed openly and the judge is starting to take notice.
[Quite] Had they treated him like every other murder in the city of NYC which happens every single day of the year there, it probably would have been a slam dunk. Instead they trippled down, made a show of it like he was some kind of mass murderer and bungled and lied at every step. It's just like the mass deportations without due process they did to that guy they sent to El Salvador.
Tell me you're on METH without telling me.
PS Love the lack of specificity in the non sequiturs and the nonsensical rants.

Judge Margaret Garnett Instructed Prosecutors to any further violation could result in punishment or contempt of court.
Trump said on Fox that Luigi "shot someone in the back as clears as you are looking at me." "POTUS is absolutely right" said the spokesman for the prosecution.
Trump's comments can taint the jury pool because like it or not, he's the President of the United states and everything a sitting president says carries a lot of weight. Getting it confirmed by his spokes person who deleted his comment after it was posted just adds to the tainting of the jury pool making impossible to have a fair trial. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt calling Mangione a "left-wing assassin" also tainting the jury.
Keep in mind these are not just random people with an opinion, they are all official government employees. As government officials involved in the case, it's against the law to do what they are doing.

I understand why do many people support Luigi as the anti-hero main character.
Pam Bondi, along with Trump, need to STFU regarding this case, however, it is HIGHLY DOUBTFUL Luigi will ever step out of prison as a free man, & if he does? He’ll be an old man.
I was a pretty young when John Lennon got shot outside of the Dakota, by a man who was a total stranger to him. His murderer is still behind bars, because Lennon’s widow, along with others, counter-petition any possibility of his release every single time he comes up for a parole hearing.
Same thing will happen with Luigi. Brian Thompson’s children will block it every single time.
What Luigi did is premeditated, cold blooded murder. The insurance industry is evil personified, but you’re a PROFOUNDLY emotionally/mentally/psychologically unwell person, if you make a deliberate and concerted effort to blow a stranger’s brains out, just because they work for an industry that is corrupt.
That’s not how it works here in America. And while I understand that our current administration is rife with corruption, corruption in and of itself does not justify choosing a target to assassinate in the middle of Manhattan, in order to make some sort of statement.
Luigi is not OK. He’s absolutely fucked up in the head and is a danger to others.
He will live his life behind bars, which sucks, because he had EVERYTHING going for him, until this.
He’s either a sociopath/psychopath, and/or there is an undiagnosed, idiopathic anomaly in the structure/function of his physical brain. Hopefully he will have an opportunity to receive proper treatment in a facility that is equipped to help him.

Good thing the patriots who started the American Revolutionary War didn't think that!

NOT THE SAME AT ALL. John Lennon was an internationally loved musical artist with millions of fans. Brian Thompson CEO? Who the Fk is he? No one knew his name before he got shot. Just one of millions of rich CEO's. No one gives a rats ass about his family, which he was divorced from by the way and the kids lived with the ex-wife.
You can pretend the all that matters is the law and the facts, but in the real world cases are won and lost based on how well the lawyers sell the story to the jury. The facts were all there but the jury didnt want to send him find him guilty because up until that point, he was loved by the black community. Watch some of the interviews of the jurors after the decision, I have and it quite obvious nothing would sway them.
Luigi has something stronger than fame, he has millions of people who can relate to being jerked around by greedy health care companies, denied coverage to something they paid into expecting it would be there when they needed it. All you need is one juror who won't convict and he gets a hung jury. The tricky part is he needs to do this twice or get the fed or state to drop out.

I don't know why some people persist in thinking that United Healthcare is on trial for murder
by Anonymous | reply 265 | September 27, 2025 6:02 PM |
Yeah, Thomas Jefferson, the pedophile who was young enough to serve in Washington's Continental Army but refused, wants to water the tree of Liberty with the blood of patriots...just not his. my favorite Founding Fathers were Washington, John Adams, Hamilton, Hancock and Samuel Adams and a few others. I never did like Jefferson even before I heard how he messed over James Hemmings, and had a bunch of babies with his sister Sally, who was 14 when he first had sex with her. Jefferson was a prima donna and a hypocrite. He gets credit for the Declaration of Independence but he was a "Co-Author." not THE author. When he was Vice President he simply left and went home to Monticello to sulk when he disagreed with the President. And never returned. He also smeared Hamilton and tried to destroy his reputation. Jefferson laid the foundation for States Rights. He was against a strong federal government. I love History. Sorry to digress.

One of Brian Thompson’s direct reports who worked under him for five years made public statements about how ruthless and craven he was, that he ordered staff to blatantly block customers from not only approvals, but even things like life-saving information. She called him evil, and there are many other whistleblowers who said the same thing. His company is in hot water for oodles of fraud. They targeted seniors among other groups. Thompson was also the architect of their new AI claim processing system which under him saw a *90%* rejection rate. Most of these were for extremely sick people, and the numbers were far higher, more like 100k murdered patients annually.
And Thompson knew all this and celebrated the increased net profits and his huge bonuses. He was a true sociopath and an actual predator who got off on killing as many people as possible by denying claims while he made UHC more and more and more. The government has known this for decades, and yet we are watching them dismantle healthcare, and you preach about Luigi not doing it “the right way”? “That’s not how it’s done in America”? You pretend that people haven’t been fighting for healthcare as a human right for decades. You pretend that we have a system that is equitable, where citizens can beat corporations at their own game. We don’t see the same America.
Whether we like it or not, when a system is oppression, it is inherently violent. And the only way to stop violence is with counter-violence. I’ll never ever commit violence. But can I see why someone finally popped off over this? Yes! And there’s people on here defending capitalism and corporations — you’re the reason America is in this mess fyi. You are enabling a completely broken and oppressive system that has caused immeasurable suffering, and violates human rights. I don’t know what’s in it for you to defend a system that wants to kneel on your throat.
Go watch videos of families who were victims of this company and just listen to how they were treated, some of the worst deaths I’ve heard, no exaggeration. If you don’t want more Luigi’s, then get corporations OUT of the lobbying game, and charge these CEO’s with capital crimes. If they were actually treated like the criminals they are (and yeah, I’m looking at the tech bros too!), we would actually be a decent country. But America is two systems of justice. That’s why we’ve lost the climate change battle too — the wealthy are taking our country if its resources, including our own people!
