Gavin Newsom podcast - why is he doing this?
First he has on Charlie Kirk - who his 13-year-old just loves! What kind of parent, let alone an allegedly liberal top politician, is encouraging an impressionable kid of that age to follow Charlie fucking Kirk?
[quote] Perhaps most bizarrely, Newsom repeatedly mentioned how his 13-year-old son is a fan of Kirk. He said the teen had tried to skip school and stick around the Newsom house, where the episode was taped, in hopes of meeting the conservative influencer. With young people, “you’re making a damn dent,” Newsom told Kirk admiringly.
Ok, you might say, but it's important to have a conversation to understand why Kirk is so appealing to Gen Z, in order to win them back.
Then he drags 82-year-old "shock jock" Michael Savage, of all people, out of the mothballs for episode 2...for what exactly? For whom is that old prick even remotely relevant now?
The latest episode is with Nazi dirtbag Steve Bannon. Again I ask...why is this necessary? Who thinks this is good optics, especially at a time when people already are suffering thanks to these fucking fascist enablers? He is doing all this while still governor of California. He couldn't wait to launch another shitty bro podcast until his term was up?

Damn, Gavin not only fucks Republicans but raises them. Wouldn't it be crazy if Gavin was actually a conservative that cosplays as a Democrat because he happens to be born from CA stock?
But to OPs point, podcasts are an important medium. You'd think the party that loves to talk, talk, talk about 10,000 plans for saving the nation would excel at podcasts. Look at the guests he's been able to snag. This is basically along political ad to remove Newsome's liberal California edge to voters in the run up to 2028.

R20 Let’s be honest, the loudest far leftist organizers (I hate to say “progressive” bc the mainstream Dem party platform is progressive, I prefer “far left” for those with unrealistic demands) don’t vote anyway, and they encourage others to stay home or vote third party, so the more we can ignore them the better. Bernie will be far too old to run next time and there isn’t anyone else they’re coalescing around. AOC was their great hope but has become too centrist for them.
In terms of primaries they were, until now, more destructive to Shapiro’s 2028 prospects than Newsom’s but Gavin may have reversed that now. I don’t see the far left in 2028 having much effect in selecting the candidate, only eliminating ones, those two included.

Bluntly, Gavin Newsom has figured out ( ahead of most Dems) that in order to win back the presidency/house and Senate, we have to understand and take advantage of a rhetorical style that appeals to and attracts low information and or low intelligence voters.
We need to understand what gets their attention and gets them motivated and finesse our agenda into rhetoric that meets these goals.

I don't know that trying to cater to MAGA douchebros will accomplish much. They'll still vote for the Republican no matter what. I think his time would be better spent trying to reach the 9 million people that voted for Biden in 2020 and that didn't show up in 2024. Or the Hispanics/Black men that voted for Trump. Maybe those people we could win back over, but I just don't see these bro boys coming back to voting for Dems ever. Plus Gavin's got the whole California stink attached to him--I know it's all BS but that matters out in Flyover country. They hate CA with a passion--I think someone from the midwest or south would be much more electable--JB Pritzker is one name that comes to mind.

[quote]I don't know that trying to cater to MAGA douchebros will accomplish much.
I was not talking about catering to them but understanding the way to message an agenda so they hear and identify with it. The right wing is expert at it and it's entirely fact free. They have found ways to emotionally engage low information/low intelligence voters and make them believe that the Republican agenda cares about them and is good for them. It is neither.
Democrats need to understand how they think and what they respond to on a rhetorical level. They aren't voting for Republicans because of facts, they are voting because of feelings.

R42 that plus frankly July is way too late to switch candidates, for better or worse. History has proven that before and it did again last year. There is a reason “did Joe Biden drop out” was the top Google search the day of the election. The American people don’t recognize a game change when it bites them in the ass.
Unless your previously chosen candidate is literally not breathing in July, you need to staple a steel rod to their spine, put a ventriloquist on the voicebox and carry them through November by any means necessary. New data on the reaction to Gavin Newsom’s new podcast:
- Favorability amongst Liberals has declined from 46% to 30%.
- While some Republicans agreed with his stances, they overwhelmingly viewed him as insincere, calling him “fake” and “pandering”
- His net favorability dropped from +4 to -6, a 10-point swing in the wrong direction.
- Only 13% of voters had an improved perception of him, and only 1 in 5 said the podcast made them want to tune in for more.

If that number is accurate, it tells you why he's doing this. 13% voter perception improvement is pretty good in such a short amount of time. He's looking at the long game obviously and betting on the idea that if he can get enough support from white men, he will be on his way to the WH.

OUTMIGRATION COST CALIFORNIA $24B IN DEPARTED INCOMES AS POORER PEOPLE MOVE IN
R84 Newsom’s move came as a flood of companies have left California to conduct operations in other states, particularly Texas. Elon Musk moved three of his multibillion-dollar companies, including Tesla, X, and Space X, out of the state, while other corporations, including Oracle, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, and Realtor.com, are among others that left California in recent months. A 2021 report by the California Policy Center found that 304 companies have left the Golden State since January 2019.
An analysis by the Santa Clara Business Law Chronicle concluded that the state’s tax laws and stringent regulations were one reason why some corporations chose to relocate to more business-friendly states such as Texas.

Newsom is positioning himself as the front runner to head the democratic ticket for 2028. Looks to me like he may run away with it at least early. Nothing beats having a great challenge and then being seen as a strong man standing up to a tyrant,
If I read it correctly Trump is sending in the Marines. 700 of them. I went thru this before. Detroit 1967 as a civilian. It can get a lot worse.
Good Luck to all
