Zero Day on Netflix…will anybody watch this?

Six episodes starring Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Angela Bassett, Connie Britton Joan Allen, Lizzie Caplan, Dan Stevens and Matthew Modine. All episodes are being dropped globally on February 20th.

Advance buzz describes it as “twisty,” “juicy,” “a powderkeg” and mentioned it will “rattle a lot of cages.”

I assume MAGA will boycott it since De Niro’s in it. I’ll give it a shot, though. De Niro’s a great actor and I like all the other ones in the cast. Going by the trailer Jesse Plemons looks like he’s lost a ton of weight. Good for him.

Robert De Niro is the coolest 80+ yr old I've ever seen. He hung out watching McCartney play a gig in NNYC at some ballroom, last week before the SNL Anniversary special. He's got a lot of energy, he is alert, and he seems to enjoy working. Years ago he was more reserved, but now he goes on talk shows and actually has conversations and explains stuff and offers opinions. I love the man!

by Anonymousreply 1February 20, 2025 3:40 AM

I', glad Joan's lost that prednisone look.

by Anonymousreply 2February 20, 2025 5:57 AM

Who’s watching for Angela Bassett?

by Anonymousreply 3February 20, 2025 5:58 AM

It must be a comedy: Angela Bassett is "President Evelyn Mitchell."

by Anonymousreply 4February 20, 2025 10:52 AM

Maybeeeee. I avoid projects with like1000 Oscar-nominated actors, but I might look at this.

by Anonymousreply 5February 20, 2025 12:35 PM

Anyone here watch it yet? Critics have panned it.

by Anonymousreply 6February 20, 2025 11:14 PM

I just finished watching the first two episodes and so far, so good. Robert De Niro is well cast IMO, and Jessie Plemens is a standout. I get that Angela Bassett as President Mitchell has to be stoic, but she comes off a bit wooden. She looks great though. Connie Britton was briefly introduced, but she’s not part of the action yet.

by Anonymousreply 7February 21, 2025 12:14 AM

I have read the script for episode one, it is fascinating.

I was hoping to be in it, but alas.

by Anonymousreply 8February 21, 2025 12:56 AM

Love DeNiro & Basset, but this sucked.

OK to skip. Trust me.

by Anonymousreply 9February 21, 2025 1:00 AM

I started it last night. I'm enjoying it. Dan Stevens plays a Tucker Carlson type TV asshole. He's had a very interesting career after DA.

by Anonymousreply 10February 21, 2025 2:05 PM

SPOILER:

Crew friend worked it and told me the creators totally neutered the show politically in post production. It was apparently made very clear during the shoot schedule that Mullen was a former Republican president and the baddies, including the daughter, were all Republicans.

by Anonymousreply 11February 21, 2025 5:09 PM

OK. I have two episodes left and SPOILER ALERT: I want to like Jesse Plemmons so bad because he is really a very good actor. But I find his looks kind of repulsive, in general. So I really enjoyed tonight's episode.

Angela Bassett is annoying. She is always the same. The same personality all the time. So far my favorite character is Connie Britton. And De Niro of course. I love him. Tone it down all they want I just assumed all the bad guys a re Republicans.

by Anonymousreply 12February 22, 2025 4:06 AM

I was under the impression that Angela Basset was a respected actress, a competent professional. My jaw dropped watching her. She is high school drama club bad. Not HS drama club average, she’s the completely untalented kid.

Does anyone remember the Queen Latifah character on 30 Rock? She’s playing it exactly the same way.

I’m not an actor or a theater buff. For me to notice that acting is bad, it has to be BAD.

She looks good, though. She wore a Stanford sweatshirt (so R11 is probably right, she’s Rice, not Harris) in one scene and looked about 40.

by Anonymousreply 13February 23, 2025 12:44 PM

I assumed they were democrats because of the dead son and the ex-president’s mental impairment. Additionally, the first episode had Mullen saying something to his wife along the lines of, “It’s your turn to be the high profile politician now, like we always agreed”, the black female president who was formerly Mullen’s VP, the former chief of staff named Valerie, like Jarrett (that might be a stretch). So a Biden/Clinton/Obama amalgamation. But the more I watched it (and I’m only 3 episodes in), the less I could tell. Maybe they created superficial democratic parallels in order to do what R11 is saying - obscure the republican bad guys sentiment. So the President seems like Harris because she’s the former VP, but the Stanford sweatshirt reveals that she’s really modeled on Rice?

by Anonymousreply 14February 23, 2025 12:55 PM

I saw the first episode. It felt hokey and pedestrian, like an ABC show. It's no Homeland.

by Anonymousreply 15February 23, 2025 1:09 PM

I really wanted to like it, but gave up midway through the second episode.

by Anonymousreply 16February 23, 2025 1:37 PM
now he goes on talk shows and actually has conversations

I dunno, R1. Colbert was pushing shit uphill like Sisyphus, trying to get anything useful out of him last week.

by Anonymousreply 17February 23, 2025 1:38 PM

R17 I seriously don't know why anyone has him on anymore. I bet Stern would be the only person capable of getting something out of him.

by Anonymousreply 18February 23, 2025 3:12 PM

Losing weight has not made Jesse Plemons more attractive.

by Anonymousreply 19February 24, 2025 2:47 AM

R13 Does anyone remember the Queen Latifah character on 30 Rock? She’s playing it exactly the same way.

Lawd. 😂

by Anonymousreply 20February 24, 2025 3:02 AM

I liked it. Well-acted and truly suspenseful through the first 5 installments. However, the wrap-up was very messy.

by Anonymousreply 21February 24, 2025 3:09 AM

That's a great cast, wow

by Anonymousreply 22February 24, 2025 3:10 AM

Well at least you were honest at the get go and started it as a Trump thread.

by Anonymousreply 23February 24, 2025 3:12 AM

Yes, I plan to watch it. DeNiro hates Trump and has been quite outspoken about his feelings.

by Anonymousreply 24February 24, 2025 3:31 AM

I just finished it. It was entertaining but not memorable and it certainly didn't warrant a cast of this caliber. I agree about Angela Basset though. She's turned into a bit of a parody of herself, always delivering her lines as if she's playing Lady MacBeth no matter what the scene is.

by Anonymousreply 25February 24, 2025 6:12 PM
It must be a comedy: Angela Bassett is "President

In our country? I’d call this more a fantasy than a comedy.

by Anonymousreply 26February 24, 2025 6:16 PM

Jesse is very good, but agreed, very odd looking. I remember him from Breaking Bad

by Anonymousreply 27February 24, 2025 8:19 PM

An Elon musk type character? Some of this is a little too close.

by Anonymousreply 28February 27, 2025 6:34 PM

Good cast, weak script. Jesse Plemons and Joan Allen, as usual, delivered the goods. Lizzy Caplan (as the ex-president's daughter) delivered a Lifetime movie performance, especially in contrast to the others.

by Anonymousreply 29February 27, 2025 6:57 PM

I found it borderline dreadful, saved only by the brilliance that is Robert DeNiro.

The "incident" was treated as though it was a major national disaster, but despite the high body count, the severity and horror of the catastrophe was never made apparent.

A "Homeland" marathon is what we needed pre-, during and post-election to raise awareness of what the various initialed agencies actually do and how they interact with the Executive, Legislative and Judicial.

I dunno, maybe I just need to rewatch "Zero Day" ... or take a nap.

by Anonymousreply 30February 27, 2025 10:13 PM

We really liked it. It was a lot of fun and kept up guessing. Don't overthink it, just enjoy

by Anonymousreply 31February 27, 2025 10:16 PM

Thanks, R31; I'll try it again.

by Anonymousreply 32February 27, 2025 11:32 PM

Halfway through. I guess I'll stick it out.

But it really made me want to watch Testament again. Now, [bold]that[/bold] was a catastrophe.

Man, R33 - great movie but it's so hard to watch.

by Anonymousreply 34February 28, 2025 12:48 AM

I agree on "Testament" being a difficult movie, but a necessary one which today's viewers need to experience.

Wow! All these many years later, and "Testament" is still remembered for delivering the ultimate, guts-wrenching antiwar message.

by Anonymousreply 35February 28, 2025 1:12 AM

Oh R34, I get it. But I wonder if we need to prepare.

Asshole has pissed off so many people in so many different countries, I just feel like it's only a matter of time before payback hits us, in whatever form it may come.

I was also looking for Playing for Time, but I couldn't find it. BTW, that movie was filmed in a decrepit Army base in my hometown area that should have been shut down many years ago.

Not terrible, but far from great. DeNiro is great and Joan Allen very good. Lizzy Kaplan, poor. As others have mentioned, Angela Bassett is rather awful. A parody of herself. Worth watching if you have lots of time and there’s nothing else worth watching.

by Anonymousreply 37February 28, 2025 2:39 AM

Y'all are better than me. Looks awful so I'll take the L by sitting this one out.

by Anonymousreply 38February 28, 2025 2:44 AM

Will Angie expect an award for it?

by Anonymousreply 39February 28, 2025 2:51 AM

I binged watched it and found it enjoyable but didn't live up to it's potential. Which character was supposed to be Musk, because I didn't get that vibe from any of them.

by Anonymousreply 40February 28, 2025 2:57 AM

The best performance was Dan Stevens. He had Tucker Carlson’s speech pattern and douchiness down cold.

by Anonymousreply 41February 28, 2025 3:33 AM

An absolute, predictable POS. The story is a rehash of a million other political thriller stories adding absolutely nothing to the pile. De Niro is watchable of course but the story meanders on and on and on so it can fill 6 episodes for no reason at all. I'm sick of Netflix series, most of them are cut with the same scissors. Oh, and DL fave Bassett is cringe worthy, overpronouncing every fucking words and twisting her face in all directions to make sure you watch her. Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 42February 28, 2025 8:31 PM

Fuck no

by Anonymousreply 43February 28, 2025 8:34 PM

I finished it. I was entertained by it, but there was an element of hate-watching. The house was the best part, even though the exterior front elevation was only 9/10 for me. I thought the front elevation was a little too impress the neighbors. Too easy to date it as 1950’s vs. more classic pre-war homes.

by Anonymousreply 44March 1, 2025 4:55 PM

I have it on my To Watch list, but will probably start this weekend.

by Anonymousreply 45March 1, 2025 6:35 PM

I've been watching The Boys and just started Season 3 but goddamn, I need a break from it. Is there any kind of redemption arc for anyone?

by Anonymousreply 46March 3, 2025 12:31 AM

Somewhere Adele is SCREAMING at her TV.

Who told that bitch she could sing?

by Anonymousreply 47March 3, 2025 12:32 AM

R37 here. I agree R41, Dan Stephens, whom I did not at first recognize , was terrific.

by Anonymousreply 48March 3, 2025 2:35 AM

Had potential, but when the whole plot comes together it’s a giant implausible meh. Plus, the Prometheus weapon, the most interesting part, is just left hanging as a giant nothing burger.

by Anonymousreply 49March 10, 2025 5:01 PM

No thanks. I'm done with Netflix and its laundering operations.

by Anonymousreply 50March 10, 2025 5:26 PM

Loved it.

by Anonymousreply 51March 10, 2025 5:32 PM

Actually, the most delicious part of the whole series is watching DeNiro sit there while Dan Stevens is “interrogated”. One can only imagine Tucker Carlson or Ben Shapiro or Hannity in that spot. It felt cleansing watching him go through that.

by Anonymousreply 52March 10, 2025 6:05 PM

Jesse Plemons, Connie Britton, and Dan Stevens were good. Plemons especially.

Lizzy Caplan combines elements of the hurt, angry, and constantly aggrieved woman with the wide-eyed innocent for a character who is boring and annoying. Angela Bassett announces things while looking moderately concerned and very serious.

The plot is nothing. Things are teased for too long so they have no emotional impact and then they go nowhere. The “inspiring” speeches are basically, “Come on! We’re Americans. Don’t let them turn you against each other.”

by Anonymousreply 53March 10, 2025 11:39 PM

I just subscribed to watch the Creep” movies. I love those.

by Anonymousreply 54March 10, 2025 11:53 PM

Does Joan Allen still look like she's on prednisone?

by Anonymousreply 55March 14, 2025 9:55 PM

I didn’t make it through episode 1. Clunky plotting.

Why is it so hard for these streaming services to make decent shows with all their money? Too much interference?

by Anonymousreply 56March 14, 2025 10:15 PM

I liked it well enough. Di Nero and Plemons were enjoyable in their roles. It was a nice distraction from our real world troubles, though its tropes and types kept bumping up against those issues too often to truly take my mind off of them. Wish things were as easily resolved IRL.

by Anonymousreply 57March 14, 2025 11:08 PM

I watched it all the way through. It started, it ended, there wasn't a lot in between. Very unmemorable. Jesse Plemmons is truly hideous to look at.

by Anonymousreply 58March 17, 2025 11:17 PM

Jesse Plemmons looked 100% better before he lost weight.

I barely recognized Joan Allen as the elderly mumsy wife.

Angela Basset also plays the president in Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning to the same uninspiring end.
