Tim Gunn "devastated, then kind of humiliated" after being left out of upcoming Project Runway revival

[quote] Gunn told People he and Klum had been exchanging text messages about the show’s revival, which he expressed interest in returning to co-host. However, when Klum asked Gunn about his contract, he told her he hadn’t received one yet.

[quote] “So I called my agent and he knew things were going on, but he contacted the executive producers of this new show, and they said, ‘We don’t want him.’ And [my agent] said, ‘Well, he’s done 19 seasons of Runway, 16 with Heidi. The two of them won an Emmy together as hosts, and now you’re going to separate them?’ And they said yes,” Gunn said.

[quote] Gunn mentioned that his agent was contacted about having the fashion consultant make “a small cameo in one episode,” adding, “What do I do? Wave from a bus? As the designers are going into Mood [Fabrics]? Heidi comes to see me at the retirement home and we play croquet? So no thank you. And as Heidi would say, you’re either in or you’re out. And I’m out. So I wasn’t asked to join.”

[quote] Gunn noted that he was initially “devastated, then kind of humiliated” about not being asked back, adding, “I thought, how lucky am I to have had the experiences that I’ve had over the last 20 years? This is phenomenal. I stopped the boohooing. I thought, it’s really throwing hubris in the face of an angry God to mourn not being on this new show. So I’ve come to terms with it.”

You would think Heidi would back him up and refuse to come back too. But then again, she does love the limelight and this will mean the spotlight is all hers.

by Anonymousreply 7February 15, 2025 8:11 AM

R7 What makes you think Heidi had anything to do with this?

by Anonymousreply 8February 15, 2025 8:17 AM

So, who do we hate?

by Anonymousreply 9February 15, 2025 9:04 AM

This isn’t about Tim.

They would have to pay him the same as Heidi, and his approach and demeanor though prized long ago, may rub newer viewers the wrong way. They could find an up and coming host with a much higher Q Score at a lower price.

It also would set the tone of the show on past expectations, and producers may want to take it a completely different direction, and Tim would either get in the way or have to give permission or participate- which they do not want.

Him taking this public likely meant they had quite a bit of negotiation that went sour, if it was quick as he alludes, he would’ve been better off saying nothing and he’s hoping the public rescues him with their outrage.

I hope he paid off all his real estate and has enough set aside for retirement because it’s not gonna happen.

by Anonymousreply 10February 15, 2025 9:36 AM

Is he still celibate?

by Anonymousreply 11February 15, 2025 9:47 AM

In defense of Heidi, she was openly communicating with Tim and had anticipated him returning to the show. She wasn’t being dodgy and she wasn’t dispatched to let him down easy. She merely asked what the status of his contract was, figuring once they both worked out the details they would be co-hosting together.

And maybe now she has an opportunity to sell the producers on bringing Tim back.

by Anonymousreply 16February 15, 2025 11:17 AM

The original (full) article at People has some other information in it. There are more quotes, and as far as Tim is concerned Heidi is blameless. The new network doing this reboot is Disney.

I like his approach of moving on & making it work. I think he'll be just fine. Something better will come his way.

by Anonymousreply 38February 15, 2025 4:25 PM

by Anonymousreply 39February 15, 2025 4:39 PM

Re Zac Posen. I’ve always imagined that a lot of designers (the ones who don’t have stores and massive accessory lines) have a business partner who is looking for a tax write off.

by Anonymousreply 42February 15, 2025 5:01 PM

I wonder if Disney didn’t want a HOMOSEXUAL helming the show?

After all, this is the new Amerikkka. Vance said he strongly opposed laws that treat gays as a protected class.

Meta has removed fact checking because serial liar Trump is back in charge. How hard is it to believe that Disney is also kissing the ring?

by Anonymousreply 43February 15, 2025 5:02 PM

I feel like it was ageism, plain and simple. I like Tim.

by Anonymousreply 44February 15, 2025 5:02 PM

He's 71. They have to think of demographics. Klum is 51, also quite long in tooth. They need 20 or 30 somethings involved, if they are keeping Klum.

by Anonymousreply 45February 15, 2025 5:06 PM

I’m over the whole damned show. I enjoyed it when it was in various cable channels but I have zero desire to keep up with it especially if it means subscribing to fucking Disney+ or Hulu.

by Anonymousreply 46February 15, 2025 5:11 PM

You can't have a fashion-related show without homosexuals. Never going to happen.

But yes, it makes sense that a 71-year-old wouldn't be considered for the mentor role again after they already had Siriano (not sure if he's going to be involved). This isn't the US government where you can have one foot in the grave and keep your job until you croak.

by Anonymousreply 47February 15, 2025 5:16 PM

Tim does take everything public, roasting the judges for their winner decisions and calling Zac Posen and Isaac Mizrahi two of the most obnoxious people he’s ever met. I appreciate his candor, but he doesn’t seem like he would be easy to manage.

I wouldn’t mourn missing out on this new season, though. The show ruined its own credibility ages ago.

by Anonymousreply 48February 15, 2025 5:24 PM

[Quote] You can't have a fashion-related show without homosexuals. Never going to happen.

You’re completely right of course r47, but there’s a difference between gays being involved, and gays being the host, the face of the show.

Now is not the time to think about Gunn regulation, now is the time for thoughts and prayers. Tim Gunn has our full support.

by Anonymousreply 52February 15, 2025 5:56 PM

In our household, we still chuckle over that iconic Tim Gunn moment that occurred during some contestant scandal… maybe that time someone got caught with design books.

It’s where Tim makes a grand statement about PR being first and foremost about integrity and sense of purpose, or some such thing. (Partner can recite it.) His ability to deliver those lines with total sincerity was outstanding.

by Anonymousreply 53February 15, 2025 6:21 PM

Tim was hard on the contestants but he was never malicious or mean and he seemed like he genuinely cared. Siriano is just snarky, cold and doesn't give a shit. Tim gave the show heart and it hasn't been the same since he left.

by Anonymousreply 54February 15, 2025 7:31 PM

I like Siriano. Tim's advice was always vague ("It's a little busy ... well, make it work") while Christian, a veteran stitch queen, was blunt but not unkind ("That material is not going to drape the way you think it is").

I mentioned it before when it happened, but I was traveling in Pennsylvania a few years after Dom won and was startled to find her behind the counter of a Starbucks taking my coffee order (in a nametag that said DOM). So the show, like most reality shows, isn't a lifetime sinecure.

by Anonymousreply 55February 15, 2025 7:39 PM

Siriano is the DL of mentors

by Anonymousreply 56February 15, 2025 7:43 PM

Michael Kors was the DL of judges.

He does so after the show aired.

by Anonymousreply 58February 16, 2025 5:46 PM

With a reboot, you need to make it different and fresh. However, most reboots never work as it's hard to get back the magic from when it was new and popular. What reboots have ever worked for any show?

That being said, I would love to see a Project Runway type of show just for men's fashions. NO men in dresses and high heels claiming it's brave and fierce.

Men's clothing only - we need to push more boundaries. So much of men's clothing is boring and so few options. Yes, I know it's a niche show with smaller audience appeal - but that's fine.

And no more of this shit - loose flowing fabric cinched together. God we see that all the time. No woman is going to wear this shit in real life.

R46 The original press release announcing the reboot indicated:

[quote] Freeform announced it closed a deal with Spyglass Media group to bring the popular reality competition show back for a 10-episode run. It will air on the network and then stream on Disney+ and Hulu shortly after.

So if your cable provider carries the Freeform channel, you'll probably be able to watch it on there. .. And if you have Spectrum cable, they no longer carry Freeform, but a lot of Spectrum customers have free access to Disney+ Basic through an agreement the companies made. One simply has to sign up through their Spectrum account.

Victorya Hong sends along this letter in response to Tim Gunn's interview from yesterday's Chicago Tribune:

I have to say that to respond to Tim's comments at all was a big dilemma for me. But your invitation to get my version out there was just too tempting, and I feel like I've been placed squarely in a position where I have no option but to do so. And let me tell you, it's hard to step into the ring with someone whose public persona is so liked, even when he's holding open those ropes. But it seems as if Tim initiates these verbal sparring battles with designers from past seasons, when it should all be over for us and we'retrying to make the best of the show. For all that he has said, that he wishes us well, that he really cares about us...hey, I've always thought that your deeds and work speak for themselves, beyond any words.

It's no secret that it's been extremely hard for me to take any of Tim's advice to heart, chiefly because I don't think he is qualified to give it. Tim was, for many years, the dean of Parsons, which is a fancy word for administrator. Does that automatically give him the credentials to assume the role of an arbiter of fashion? I can see how he might be capable of teaching say, fashion history, but design?

I do not mean to assert that he's completely unqualified. He seems to be exploring now what he is good at doing. I think he's very suited to educating women on how they should dress based on body proportions--because it's an almost formulaic approach. This dress will flatter your body because of x, y, and z. But again, that doesn't speak to design.

I am the type of person who, professionally, would prefer to work with someone who may not be the most likable, but really knows their stuff. I'm sure everyone has had a horror story about having to work with someone who is extremely nice, but completely incompetent. It's the absolute worst!

So this is where I think I went wrong. My assessment of Tim has always been strictly professional and it was never intended to be personal at all.

But seeing his response now, I was a little startled by how caustic his words were, and how personally he's taken it. When you get riled up, of course your emotions will cloud your assessment. That's the only way that I can make sense of so many factual inaccuracies in what Tim has said.

I guess I shouldn't be so surprised that he's getting things wrong. But the ill-will in his words are so evident, I can only take it that he does not mean me well, and that can alarm anyone...even an ice princess!

The most lamentable thing of it all though, is that Tim feels as if he can speak about what I went through when Jack left the show. I've always thought that if anyone should speak about that whole experience, it's Jack. No one should have been more upset. It shouldn't be about me, about the show, about anything else. It should be about Jack.

Even now I ask myself, how do I want to remember this? How will I look back in 10 years time? Right now, I'm extremely grateful for all the things that have been happening since I've been on the show. But when things like this come up, it's hard not to let it sully the whole experience. It makes me want to just go live on another planet. Elisa's planet, right now, seems like a pretty darned great place to be!

by Anonymousreply 102February 17, 2025 7:41 PM

It’s fairly simple right? There’s a job vacancy for host so Heidi’s back, but there isn’t a vacancy for mentor because Christian is there. I much prefer Christian as mentor, as others have said, his suggestions are much less vague than Tim’s, and he’s very funny. Agree with R77 and others, Tim could do a great aftershow, or a fashion police reboot would suit him.

by Anonymousreply 119March 29, 2025 4:51 PM

Most gays of his generation DID survive the plague. If you lived in an epicenter ( SF, NYC) you might not have thought so.

by Anonymousreply 120March 29, 2025 7:25 PM

I was wondering if there was a Tim Gunn appreciation thread and Ta-Dah!

by Anonymousreply 121May 5, 2025 6:11 PM

The show is nothing without Tim. It will flop.

by Anonymousreply 122May 5, 2025 6:16 PM

Tim WAS the show. I won't watch it now that I know he's not involved.

by Anonymousreply 123May 5, 2025 6:19 PM

r118 Believe it or not, but condoms, monogamy, and people just plain not having sex were all a thing during the AIDS epidemic, just as they are today. Which is the reason most gay men survived that period. But some wanted Reagan to nanny them and personally roll the condom down their shaft each time they had sex. Zero personal responsibility.

Russell T Davies during his It's A Sin promo tour also often talked about how much it bothers him when someone says that "a whole generation of gay men" was wiped out when that simply isn't true.

by Anonymousreply 124May 5, 2025 6:19 PM

r123 He was never a designer and his feedback was nearly always useless and limited to "make it work". He's also way too old, he should be enjoying retirement instead.

by Anonymousreply 125May 5, 2025 6:21 PM

I can't stand Law's public persona (I've worked with him on a commercial with Zendaya, and he was surprisingly low key and naturally gray haired), but he is a fantastic STYLIST.

by Anonymousreply 126May 5, 2025 8:43 PM

Tim made it work! Ciriano may be successful but he has zero personality.

by Anonymousreply 127May 6, 2025 11:16 AM

Tim’s talent is that he is a teacher who seeks to understand and encourages contestants to develop THEIR OWN design aesthetic. I’m not sure Christian or Law have that talent, and I don’t know why the producers think anyone can do what Tim does. It’s not the case! If it were then any other network could have easily replicated this show.

by Anonymousreply 128May 6, 2025 12:25 PM

I really liked Tim on PR but I think the whole “make it work” thing ran its course.

And hey, he and Heidi jumped ship for Netflix and he went around saying how much more he enjoyed the new Netflix format compared to PR.

It was a bridge burning of sorts. So yeah, they didn’t offer him to join the reboot. What did he expect?

by Anonymousreply 129May 6, 2025 2:06 PM

Naturally, Tim Gunn gets replaced by DEI project

Plus, Age discrimination-Sue the fuck outta them Tim.

The Discovery process will destroy them.

by Anonymousreply 130May 6, 2025 2:37 PM

Am I the only one who thinks Tim is hot? He’s probably got a saddle in his closet.

by Anonymousreply 131May 6, 2025 2:46 PM

R124 is too stupid for words. Next!

by Anonymousreply 132May 6, 2025 2:47 PM

R124 isn’t American per her posting history. Why am I not surprised?

by Anonymousreply 133May 6, 2025 2:50 PM

R127,

Siriano has no personality?

What the what?

Not sure how you can say that. He has a very BIG personality. Did as a contestant, and continues to do so as a mentor.

One may not like his personality, but no, he's not dull. And he's very different from Tim.

I love them both, actually. And am sad Tim isn't returning.

by Anonymousreply 134May 6, 2025 3:09 PM

Tim Gunn should do a "Talking Dead-Fashion Police" 30-minute gabfest-podcast after the "New Project Runway"show.

Get Melissa Rivers involved have a blast- Fashion needs a good kick in the ass!!

by Anonymousreply 135May 6, 2025 3:28 PM

^Good idea, but can we have Michael Kors instead of Melissa Rivers?

by Anonymousreply 136May 6, 2025 3:32 PM

^^Did Joan Rivers own "Fashion police" or part of the show with "E" entertainment?^^^

Joan had to have a piece of the action, she had really good attorneys, especially after Edgar killed himself& her working style.

Michael Kors-Tim Gunn would be perfect together on my reboot show

by Anonymousreply 137May 6, 2025 3:43 PM

Good lord, the underboob cut-out on Heidi’s dress, in OP’s photo, is unnecessary. The bottom tenth of squashed boobs never looks good.

by Anonymousreply 138May 6, 2025 4:27 PM

Team Tim.

by Anonymousreply 139May 6, 2025 4:49 PM

r124, There are so many things I'd like to respond to but this is a Tim Gunn thread. Your Reagan reference is demented, it's something Roy Cohn would have said. The reason most of us are alive is because of PREP.

Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop began erasing that stigma in 1987 when he declared that condoms offered the best protection from AIDS for those who “will not practice abstinence or monogamy.” He riled conservatives by calling for condom advertising on television. Condom ads on TV??? Outrageous

1987, when Elton John had finally settled down with a nice girl. Ellen didn't come out until 1997. The 80's were rife with homophobia, fear, loathing and misinformation and condoms were not readily available. You had to go to a pharmacy and they were expensive as was healthcare, clinics were rare. They weren't handing condoms out on street corners at that time except in the Village and the Castro.

Personal responsibility? Sure, and a lot of us were just lucky and many men weren't. Like covid, a lot of healthy people just died or became infected before they knew any better.
