Pete Hegseth says US military bases should restore names of Confederate generals

Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of defense, has voiced strong opposition to removing the names of Confederate generals from US military bases, repeatedly saying the names should be changed back.

Hegseth, a National Guard veteran and longtime Fox News host, has described the renaming efforts as “a sham,” “garbage,” and “crap” in various media appearances between 2021 and 2024 reviewed by CNN. Hegseth said the moves eroded military tradition and were part of what he characterized as a politically motivated progressive agenda infiltrating American institutions.

And so it begins.

The White Christian Nationalization of the United States.

Just one more week before it starts to take effect in full force.

The Nazis are in charge.

THEY

LOST

THE

WAR!!!!

I thought Trump and his cronies hated losers? Why do they idolize Confederates???

by Anonymousreply 2January 13, 2025 3:33 PM
Why do they idolize Confederates???

Because the Confederacy stood for white supremacy and black subjugation and slavery.

That's the one and only reason.

Make no mistake about this. Pete Hegseth is a white supremacist.

His "white power" tattoos are no accident.

This right-wing white supremacist is almost guaranteed to be confirmed as Defense Secretary.

And once he is in charge of the military, watch out.

They will do Trump's bidding.

Hegseth will deploy them and use the US military to enforce Trump's dictatorship.

Just like other autocrats all over the world use their military against their own people.

Rural, southern MAGA supporters will be so enthusiastic about this particular sop that they'll never see what the real plan for them is.

by Anonymousreply 5January 13, 2025 3:50 PM

Why should military bases be named after people who led a rebellion? This is literally the only country on earth where this is even a question.

by Anonymousreply 6January 13, 2025 3:52 PM

I prefer Generals from the winning side of a war, personally.

by Anonymousreply 7January 13, 2025 3:58 PM
This is literally the only country on earth

You can say this about so many different topics; it's not limited to naming military bases after the losing side (although I think we can all agree now that the Confederacy didn't lose the war; it just changed its name several times over the century and three-quarters since officially "losing" and is now called "MAGA"). We are the wealthiest nation on Earth, but with the highest rates of homelessness., child poverty, and lowest attending and performing students. We have among the lowest violent crime rates of all industrialized nations, and the highest incarceration rates among all nations, even higher than even the most oppressive regimes.

It's sad, really. We could be the best, most productive, happiest country on Earth, and instead we have billionaires.

by Anonymousreply 8January 13, 2025 4:06 PM

Trump can’t allow this because the Confederates are “suckers and losers”. Right?

by Anonymousreply 9January 13, 2025 4:09 PM

Clever. Now they can paint opposition to him as out-of-control wokeness.

by Anonymousreply 10January 13, 2025 4:10 PM
should be concerning to Republicans.

Have you been in a coma, r15?

by Anonymousreply 16January 13, 2025 4:39 PM

No, r16. I am referring to their long-term prospects. Not the wackos in office now but the ones who will come later, after Republicans have eroded public trust. The party is being very shortsighted in trying to appease Dump. The military already has a recruitment issue, after this guy the whole institution will be left in tatters.

They've been doing it for eight years, r17.

by Anonymousreply 18January 13, 2025 4:58 PM

They want the military to be a Christian Nationalist militia that can be used domestically and for purposes of imperialism in our hemisphere, not for defending Democracy in Europe and Taiwan. They don’t care about recruitment in terms of numbers. They are hoping for ideological purity.
GOP plows ahead with Hegseth hearing as Democrats fume

Senate Armed Services Committee Democrats are fuming as Pete Hegseth, President-elect Trump’s controversial pick to lead the Pentagon, is set to head back to Capitol Hill on Tuesday for his confirmation hearing before the panel.

Hegseth, a former Fox News host, has met with numerous Republican senators in the weeks since Trump on Nov. 12 first announced his intended pick to lead the more than 2 million troops and 800,000 civilian workers that make up the U.S. military apparatus.

But Democrats say Hegseth has refused to make himself available to them in the same way, and has failed to provide key vetting information as they look into a series of scandals and scathing media reports on the Army veteran.
‘Not Hearing an Answer’: Hegseth Refuses to Commit to Resigning if He Drinks on the Job

Pete Hegseth refused to commit to resigning if he drinks on the job while running the Pentagon.

The Fox & Friends Weekend host dodged questions from Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono at his confirmation hearing Tuesday about whether he’d “resign as Secretary of Defense if you drink on the job, which is a 24-7 position.”

“I have made this commitment on behalf of the men and women I am serving,” Hegseth began to say, referring to his promise that he would not drink if he was confirmed.

“Will you resign as Secretary of Defense if you drink on the job?” the Democrat senator again asked.

“I’ve made this commitment on behalf of the men and women I’m serving because it’s the most important deployment of my life,” Hegseth repeated.

“I’m not hearing an answer to my questions,” Hirono said. “While you have made that commitment, you will not commit to resigning if you drink on the job.”

Hirono referenced reports from The New Yorker and NBC News that Hegseth had a history of drinking heavily at work while the president of a veteran’s advocacy group and that his drinking habits affected his job as a Fox News morning host.

"Pete Hegseth’s fiery confirmation hearing ends with GOP signaling approval"

Ex-Fox News host Pete Hegseth called for the return of “American warriors” in his opening statement as he is grilled by the Senate ahead of his likely confirmation as Defense Secretary.

The 44-year-old veteran faced questions about his lack of management experience, his alleged heavy drinking, as well as his previous opposition to women serving in combat roles in the military.

When asked about accusations that he sexually assaulted a woman in a California hotel room in 2017 — something he has denied — he blamed a “smear campaign” propagated by “left-wing” media and based on anonymous sources.

“We are not Republicans or Democrats — we are American warriors. Our standards will be high, and they will be equal,” he told the bipartisan panel of senators in his opening statement.

His wife's boob job is awful

by Anonymousreply 215January 17, 2025 4:23 PM

Hegseth's current wife Jennifer has a bit of mannish face. She probably got the boob job to overcompensate for having a face that isn't all that attractive. Hegseth's first and second wives are brunettes. The first wife Meredith Schwarz was quite pretty in the wedding pics that are online. She had a very cutesy feminine face. The second wife Samantha Deering has a mannish jaw.

I read that Vanity Fair article on Hegseth's first marriage. He and the first wife Meredith were high school sweetheart. They didn't have kids together. Meredith is probably glad she didn't have kids with Pete. No custody bullshit or having to deal with step-moms.

The second wife Samantha probably loathes Jennifer aka Wife 3. She has to see all the social media pics of her sons with Pete, Jennifer, Jennifer's kids, and the daughter that resulted from Pete and Jennifer's affair. Then again Samantha can't talk much since she had an affair with Pete when he was married to Meredith. In my bitchy fantasy mind, Meredith is probably reading all the articles and drama related to Pete is probably laughing her ass at Samantha and Jennifer.

Hegseth's second wife sought refuge in a closet after Hegseth threatened her.

She was so concerned about her safety that she shared a code word with her sister-in-law to alert her when Hegseth threatened her. She texted the code word to the sister-in-law in 2015 or 2016.

The complainant witnessed Hegseth drunk on several occasions, including one Christmas when he vomited and passed out. In another instance, at a bar in 2013 in Minneapolis, Hegseth danced with drinks in both hands, broke glasses and was dragged out. On the walk home he made comments that implied he condoned non-consensual sex.

On another occasion in 2009, Hegseth was found drunk at a strip club in downtown Minneapolis in his military uniform, drunk and getting lap dances. He had to be dragged out of the club.

He disparaged Hispanic people and said Christian people needed to have more babies than Muslims to avoid being overtaken.

by Anonymousreply 256January 22, 2025 5:01 AM

I heard one pundit opine that some of these nominees are intentionally offensive & unqualified as a means of Trump lording over the Republicans. Knowing their fear, politically & otherwise, of rejecting them/him, he telegraphs his complete control over them.

by Anonymousreply 257January 22, 2025 12:14 PM

Republicans in the House and Senate fear Trump. The Democrats need to be less timid in speaking out, as a whole, against Trump and his outrageous rhetoric and controversial decisions.

Congress is a mess.

by Anonymousreply 258January 22, 2025 2:31 PM

R258 Well, Congress has been a mess in the last decade or so when the Republicans are in charge. The first two years of Biden's Admin when Dems controlled both houses a lot was done.. more productive problem-solving than any session since LBJ in the 60s. I don't think Republicans really want to govern, they want to attack, control, disrupt... even before MAGA. Remember when Grover Norquist said that the goal for Republicans when they were in power was to "take government, throw it in the bathtub and strangle it", building on Ronald Reagan's "government doesn't solve problems, it IS the problem"

Americans resent and are skeptical about government and so too often elect people to run the country who hate all the mechanisms and norms of governing.

[bold]Susan Collins: ‘Troubling’ that Hegseth FBI report omitted key information[/bold]

HA!

There she goes again, this stupid bitch!!! "I'm concerned."

[italic]Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) told reporters Wednesday that [bold]she was concerned[/bold] that the FBI’s background investigation report about secretary of Defense nominee Pete Hegseth is said to have omitted relevant information, such as an interview with the nominee’s former sister-in-law alleging physical intimidation and drunken behavior.

“I’ve heard from others that pertinent information has not been included, and that is troubling,” Collins said. “When you’re making a decision about a nominee, you want to have as complete a picture as possible.”

Collins was referring to complaints from Senate colleagues that relevant interviews were not included in the FBI report on Hegseth’s background, including an interview with Hegseth’s former sister-in-law, who alleged a variety of misconduct in an affidavit later submitted to the Senate Armed Services Committee.[/italic]

I've also heard that non-Committee members Collins & McConnell are no votes on Hegseth. The anti-Hegseth forces will need one more vote (assuming, that is, Fetterman is a no vote, too).

by Anonymousreply 266January 23, 2025 7:30 PM

he's not fit nor is he qualified for the post!

by Anonymousreply 267January 23, 2025 7:31 PM

This is going to blow up. The man is obviously an active alcoholic. He will be taking on responsibilities that are both beyond him and exponentially more demanding than anything he has done. Talk about DEI hires.

by Anonymousreply 268January 23, 2025 7:35 PM

Fox is now reporting that McConnell is a yes vote.

by Anonymousreply 269January 23, 2025 8:15 PM

McConnell is coward asswipe.

Hegseth met privately with Lindsey. The Senator is now smitten.
Hegseth met privately with Lindsey. The Senator is now smitten.

The Senator is now full of milky loads.

by Anonymousreply 275January 23, 2025 11:13 PM

According to this "source who has had a decades-long career in the U.S. military and the intelligence community, serving both in and out of government," Hegseth won't "last in this job more than a year."
Here’s the thing: the secretary of defense is a killer job. The pressure, the stress, and the workload are crushing. Take a person with a history of heavy drinking. Put him in one of the most physically and mentally demanding jobs in the world. What chance is there that he’s not going to go back to the bottle?

It’ll be exciting to watch. The country is like the best reality show ever now. So many dimensions and layers. It’s like it’s airing over seven different channels and you can just click back in forth. Hegseth hasn’t hit the bottle yet? Let’s click over to see if Elon has been spotted goose stepping

by Anonymousreply 277January 24, 2025 2:15 PM

R277 This is what is wrong with our country, Part II. We don't care about fascism, oligarchy, pain and suffering of the middle and working classes, environmental destruction... we just want to be entertained.

by Anonymousreply 278January 24, 2025 2:53 PM

I’ve got a bad feeling about this guy. I see him stumbling into war, perhaps a nuclear Armageddon

by Anonymousreply 279January 24, 2025 2:56 PM

R279 We may well have "oops, now it's a war"... but it won't be because of Hegseth... it will be Trump and his coven of Nosferatu America Firsters... Hegseth is there just to get rid of any military that might possibly push back against The Leader.

by Anonymousreply 280January 24, 2025 3:04 PM

MAGA is all anti-war at the moment. They blame Democrats and RINOS for forever wars, Gaza, and Ukraine. This will all change if Trump needs it to.

by Anonymousreply 281January 24, 2025 3:26 PM

R281 MAGA is all over the map. Yes, "stop forever wars, we are NOT the world's policeman!"... and the first international noises that Trump makes: invade Greenland, take back the Panama Canal, make invasion of Mexico legal (look it up).... We will not inflict military power around the world to support democratic ideals (at least that's been our rationale in public), but we will send military all over the world to dominate, control countries for 1) our own economic interests to leverage more wealth to the oligarchy and 2) satisfy Trump's ego.

by Anonymousreply 282January 24, 2025 3:32 PM

At least Pete won't have to worry about Ukraine much longer. Trump and OPEC have got that covered.
Donald Trump says that OPEC dropping the price of oil will end the war in Ukraine. This man is an utter dunce.

Video bonus: The Melania stand-in/Frau Farbissina character in Biden Aviators standing behind Donald is a hoot.

R283, "bullets whacking and killing men, mostly men..." Trump must be a descendant of Lord Byron himself.

by Anonymousreply 285January 24, 2025 6:02 PM

The Senate is deadlocked 50-50 on his nomination so Miss JD Vance will cast the tie-breaking vote for this bozo

by Anonymousreply 286January 25, 2025 1:52 AM

So McConnell DID vote against Hegseth. I suspect this won’t be the last vote he casts against Trump.

by Anonymousreply 287January 25, 2025 2:08 AM

^ I guess now that he's too old and sick to run again he's out of fucks to give

by Anonymousreply 288January 25, 2025 2:09 AM

And he loathes Trump.

by Anonymousreply 289January 25, 2025 2:10 AM

Maybe he’ll pull it together. But if he embarrasses himself, it will be especially bad for Vance, Ernst, and Tillis.

by Anonymousreply 290January 25, 2025 2:14 AM

So kids, it's happening, we're fucked. You know US Troops will be used against American citizens anytime Trump wants. It's so critical that Dems take back the House in 2026 (the Senate map still doesn't look good for Dems).

This is so surreal. Overblown histrionic reactions.... are kind of just a normal, rational response.

by Anonymousreply 291January 25, 2025 2:17 AM

But they're not. They're just kinda pathetic

by Anonymousreply 292January 25, 2025 2:21 AM

One more Senator with guts is all we need,

by Anonymousreply 293January 25, 2025 2:30 AM

This doesn’t bode well for Patel, Gabbard & Kennedy. Unless, that is, the size of the opposition is only in each instance is just big enough to keep from winning.

by Anonymousreply 294January 25, 2025 2:34 AM

Joni Ernst was the one who could've stopped it, and she will have to live with that. Hope she's punching herself in the twat right now, and for the next four years.

Musk's "engineers" who are taking over the federal data systems have been outed, and some of their online history demonstrates extremist views. Not surprising.

One of them posted on his substack about how great and necessary Hegseth is in order to disrupt and unplug the military. I wonder how long before we have terrorist attacks. Astonishing.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if terrorist attacks happen. Hegseth is unqualified and DOD and the country are now vulnerable.

I was a junior in high school when 9/11 happened. I remember a teacher saying to us, "Hopefully none of you will have to see another terrorist attack in your lifetime in this country". There was a girl in the class who was very anti-GWB and she said something along the lines of "Well hopefully, the US will have never another moron as president and put us in danger". I still wonder what her views are now because Trump is much worse than GWB.
