Pete Hegseth says US military bases should restore names of Confederate generals
Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of defense, has voiced strong opposition to removing the names of Confederate generals from US military bases, repeatedly saying the names should be changed back.
Hegseth, a National Guard veteran and longtime Fox News host, has described the renaming efforts as “a sham,” “garbage,” and “crap” in various media appearances between 2021 and 2024 reviewed by CNN. Hegseth said the moves eroded military tradition and were part of what he characterized as a politically motivated progressive agenda infiltrating American institutions.

[quote] Why do they idolize Confederates???
Because the Confederacy stood for white supremacy and black subjugation and slavery.
That's the one and only reason.
Make no mistake about this. Pete Hegseth is a white supremacist.
His "white power" tattoos are no accident.

This right-wing white supremacist is almost guaranteed to be confirmed as Defense Secretary.
And once he is in charge of the military, watch out.
They will do Trump's bidding.
Hegseth will deploy them and use the US military to enforce Trump's dictatorship.
Just like other autocrats all over the world use their military against their own people.

[quote]This is literally the only country on earth
You can say this about so many different topics; it's not limited to naming military bases after the losing side (although I think we can all agree now that the Confederacy didn't lose the war; it just changed its name several times over the century and three-quarters since officially "losing" and is now called "MAGA"). We are the wealthiest nation on Earth, but with the highest rates of homelessness., child poverty, and lowest attending and performing students. We have among the lowest violent crime rates of all industrialized nations, and the highest incarceration rates among all nations, even higher than even the most oppressive regimes.
It's sad, really. We could be the best, most productive, happiest country on Earth, and instead we have billionaires.

[quote] GOP plows ahead with Hegseth hearing as Democrats fume
Senate Armed Services Committee Democrats are fuming as Pete Hegseth, President-elect Trump’s controversial pick to lead the Pentagon, is set to head back to Capitol Hill on Tuesday for his confirmation hearing before the panel.
Hegseth, a former Fox News host, has met with numerous Republican senators in the weeks since Trump on Nov. 12 first announced his intended pick to lead the more than 2 million troops and 800,000 civilian workers that make up the U.S. military apparatus.
But Democrats say Hegseth has refused to make himself available to them in the same way, and has failed to provide key vetting information as they look into a series of scandals and scathing media reports on the Army veteran.

[quote] ‘Not Hearing an Answer’: Hegseth Refuses to Commit to Resigning if He Drinks on the Job
Pete Hegseth refused to commit to resigning if he drinks on the job while running the Pentagon.
The Fox & Friends Weekend host dodged questions from Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono at his confirmation hearing Tuesday about whether he’d “resign as Secretary of Defense if you drink on the job, which is a 24-7 position.”
“I have made this commitment on behalf of the men and women I am serving,” Hegseth began to say, referring to his promise that he would not drink if he was confirmed.
“Will you resign as Secretary of Defense if you drink on the job?” the Democrat senator again asked.
“I’ve made this commitment on behalf of the men and women I’m serving because it’s the most important deployment of my life,” Hegseth repeated.
“I’m not hearing an answer to my questions,” Hirono said. “While you have made that commitment, you will not commit to resigning if you drink on the job.”
Hirono referenced reports from The New Yorker and NBC News that Hegseth had a history of drinking heavily at work while the president of a veteran’s advocacy group and that his drinking habits affected his job as a Fox News morning host.

Then in the next breath you say the Confederate deserves to be honored.
You say the Republicans are the party of Abraham Lincoln and then you turn around and recommend Confederate officers be honored..

"Pete Hegseth’s fiery confirmation hearing ends with GOP signaling approval"
Ex-Fox News host Pete Hegseth called for the return of “American warriors” in his opening statement as he is grilled by the Senate ahead of his likely confirmation as Defense Secretary.
The 44-year-old veteran faced questions about his lack of management experience, his alleged heavy drinking, as well as his previous opposition to women serving in combat roles in the military.
When asked about accusations that he sexually assaulted a woman in a California hotel room in 2017 — something he has denied — he blamed a “smear campaign” propagated by “left-wing” media and based on anonymous sources.
“We are not Republicans or Democrats — we are American warriors. Our standards will be high, and they will be equal,” he told the bipartisan panel of senators in his opening statement.

Hegseth's current wife Jennifer has a bit of mannish face. She probably got the boob job to overcompensate for having a face that isn't all that attractive. Hegseth's first and second wives are brunettes. The first wife Meredith Schwarz was quite pretty in the wedding pics that are online. She had a very cutesy feminine face. The second wife Samantha Deering has a mannish jaw.
I read that Vanity Fair article on Hegseth's first marriage. He and the first wife Meredith were high school sweetheart. They didn't have kids together. Meredith is probably glad she didn't have kids with Pete. No custody bullshit or having to deal with step-moms.
The second wife Samantha probably loathes Jennifer aka Wife 3. She has to see all the social media pics of her sons with Pete, Jennifer, Jennifer's kids, and the daughter that resulted from Pete and Jennifer's affair. Then again Samantha can't talk much since she had an affair with Pete when he was married to Meredith. In my bitchy fantasy mind, Meredith is probably reading all the articles and drama related to Pete is probably laughing her ass at Samantha and Jennifer.

Hegseth's second wife sought refuge in a closet after Hegseth threatened her.
She was so concerned about her safety that she shared a code word with her sister-in-law to alert her when Hegseth threatened her. She texted the code word to the sister-in-law in 2015 or 2016.
The complainant witnessed Hegseth drunk on several occasions, including one Christmas when he vomited and passed out. In another instance, at a bar in 2013 in Minneapolis, Hegseth danced with drinks in both hands, broke glasses and was dragged out. On the walk home he made comments that implied he condoned non-consensual sex.
On another occasion in 2009, Hegseth was found drunk at a strip club in downtown Minneapolis in his military uniform, drunk and getting lap dances. He had to be dragged out of the club.
He disparaged Hispanic people and said Christian people needed to have more babies than Muslims to avoid being overtaken.

I heard one pundit opine that some of these nominees are intentionally offensive & unqualified as a means of Trump lording over the Republicans. Knowing their fear, politically & otherwise, of rejecting them/him, he telegraphs his complete control over them.

Republicans in the House and Senate fear Trump. The Democrats need to be less timid in speaking out, as a whole, against Trump and his outrageous rhetoric and controversial decisions.
Congress is a mess.

R258 Well, Congress has been a mess in the last decade or so when the Republicans are in charge. The first two years of Biden's Admin when Dems controlled both houses a lot was done.. more productive problem-solving than any session since LBJ in the 60s. I don't think Republicans really want to govern, they want to attack, control, disrupt... even before MAGA. Remember when Grover Norquist said that the goal for Republicans when they were in power was to "take government, throw it in the bathtub and strangle it", building on Ronald Reagan's "government doesn't solve problems, it IS the problem"
Americans resent and are skeptical about government and so too often elect people to run the country who hate all the mechanisms and norms of governing.

[bold]Susan Collins: ‘Troubling’ that Hegseth FBI report omitted key information[/bold]
HA!
There she goes again, this stupid bitch!!! "I'm concerned."
[italic]Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) told reporters Wednesday that [bold]she was concerned[/bold] that the FBI’s background investigation report about secretary of Defense nominee Pete Hegseth is said to have omitted relevant information, such as an interview with the nominee’s former sister-in-law alleging physical intimidation and drunken behavior.
“I’ve heard from others that pertinent information has not been included, and that is troubling,” Collins said. “When you’re making a decision about a nominee, you want to have as complete a picture as possible.”
Collins was referring to complaints from Senate colleagues that relevant interviews were not included in the FBI report on Hegseth’s background, including an interview with Hegseth’s former sister-in-law, who alleged a variety of misconduct in an affidavit later submitted to the Senate Armed Services Committee.[/italic]

According to this "source who has had a decades-long career in the U.S. military and the intelligence community, serving both in and out of government," Hegseth won't "last in this job more than a year."
[quote] Here’s the thing: the secretary of defense is a killer job. The pressure, the stress, and the workload are crushing. Take a person with a history of heavy drinking. R281 MAGA is all over the map. Yes, "stop forever wars, we are NOT the world's policeman!"... and the first international noises that Trump makes: invade Greenland, take back the Panama Canal, make invasion of Mexico legal (look it up).... We will not inflict military power around the world to support democratic ideals (at least that's been our rationale in public), but we will send military all over the world to dominate, control countries for 1) our own economic interests to leverage more wealth to the oligarchy and 2) satisfy Trump's ego.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if terrorist attacks happen. Hegseth is unqualified and DOD and the country are now vulnerable.
I was a junior in high school when 9/11 happened. I remember a teacher saying to us, "Hopefully none of you will have to see another terrorist attack in your lifetime in this country". There was a girl in the class who was very anti-GWB and she said something along the lines of "Well hopefully, the US will have never another moron as president and put us in danger". I still wonder what her views are now because Trump is much worse than GWB.
