Explanations please!
Why is DL one of the few remaining places on the interwebz that care about spelling and grammar?

Your post is missing a comma.

All of you claim to have some sort of education, and yet you have no pride in how you present yourself in your communications with other people. It's pathetic.
If I could get paid for correcting grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage errors here, I'd be rich.

Old queens and their control issues.

Because most of us are well over 50, and we were schooled in a bygone era of sentence-parsing, elocution, and public shaming over past-participle mistakes.

You see there are still faint glimmers of civilisation left in this barbaric slaughterhouse that was once known as humanity. Indeed that's what we provide in our own modest, humble, insignificant. Oh fuck it.

DLers have nothing to say but they demand it be said correctly.

Maybe we are a long way from beng made in God's image, but Stella - my sister - there has been some progress since then! Such things as art - as poetry and music - such kinds of new light have come into the world since then! In some kinds of people some tendered feelings have had some little beginning! That we have got to make grow! And cling to, and hold as our flag! In this dark march towards whatever it is we're approaching . . . Don't - don't hang back with the brutes!

[quote] Oh, dear.
Sounds awkward, but I think the subject-verb (places that care) agreement is okay. What are you oh-dearing about?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 12, 2025 12:11 AM |
I don’t care about spelling, grammar or typos but I do find it extremely annoying when OPs don’t post a link to what they are referring to (i.e. a study, article, photo) when germane to the topic of their post. It’s also super annoying when someone responds to a specific post without using the R number. It usually comes across as a complete nonsequitur.

OP your post has to be a parody post.

I think there are a fair number of DLers who went to Catholic schools in the days when nuns taught.

Is DL an English class?

[quote]Sounds awkward
[quote]What are you oh-dearing about?
It does sound awkward. DL is a collective of waifs and strays, but as 'DL' it is a singular entity, not a plural. 'Which cares' might have occasioned less scolding.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 18, 2025 7:00 PM |
If the average English speaker throughout history cared as much about grammar and spelling as our DL grammar queens do, we’d still be speaking Old English, but even that was a mish-mosh of bastardized German dialects. This damn language keeps morphing.

Picking at scabs is as satisfying as the erections they can't get any more. Pettiness is blood flow around here.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 18, 2025 8:15 PM |
It cares less about grammar than about that pathetic "mein fuhrer" schtick. Most of DL was that kid who always had her hand up in class.

It’s all because gay men do not have women or children to deal with so they tend to hyper focus on other things. One of you is bound to find a missing comma here. Does it heal your inner turmoil?

Maybe Gabe Henry, the author of the new book, "Enough is Enuf," reviewed in The Times's Book Review, is a DLer, OP.

The metaphors in this thread are incredible. I'm too dumb and lazy to compete.
I do truly love this uptight, grammar-obsessed place, though!

My gf is a book reviewer and editor. Good luck not having an opinion on the Oxford comma in this house. She has a galley of that book to review, R35, but hasn't started it yet.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 3, 2025 7:30 PM |
OP? We can also write in cursive.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 3, 2025 7:32 PM |
In today's social media world, your command of the English language is really all you have. Writing and speaking poorly renders you an idiot. That's it in a nutshell, OP.

It’s a good way to shame people on the cheap.

High correlation between grammar Nazis and prissy queens, for reasons r4 mentioned. Little to no power in real life, so they have to exert it over other anonymous nobodies online.

Recently, I ran into an old lesbian couple that just got married, the wife is a retired English teacher. I asked the bride, "How's married life? " she said that before they got out of bed she told her wife, "I could lay here all day with you." and the wife responded. "Lie! Unless you're a hen. "

"Why is DL one of the few remaining places on the interwebz that care about spelling and grammar?"
Diagramming that sentence would have helped you, OP. It would have shown you that the subject of your title sentence is DL. When you diagram a sentence you begin with the subject. Then you skip ahead to the verb. DL...........CARES. Other parts of speech, such as adjectives and adverbs, are added later. You would have also realized that "one of the few remaining places on the interwebz" is a descriptive phrase - descriptive because it further explains or describes the subject, DL.
I suspect you are not a product of a school where nuns kept you after school if you couldn't diagram a sentence properly. It should come as no surprise that many DLers had that sort of school background. We have the emotional scars to prove it, and correcting grammar on a public forum is just a small part of the emotional damage we will continue to carry to our graves.
"Once a Catholic schoolboy, always in recovery".

Pointless bitchery.

I've been here since late 1998, and that's the first time I've seen the words "DL" and "CARES" (sort of) together.

I paid no attention in school past the eighth grade, but as an elder, I read books and newspapers and learned spelling and grammar. The youngsters today have degrees up their asses and don’t understand these concepts. When I read “could of” instead do “could’ve” again…well…

Correct spelling and grammar are markers of level of education and social station. Naturally, the reliably classist DL pays attention to them...unless there's a hottie with verified sizemeat involved.

I have a classic bush and hairy taint. I don't need that old man spelling and grammar, too.
