Pacific Palisades burning Part 2
by Anonymous | reply 560 | January 9, 2025 5:47 PM |
I worry about people not getting their pets out. Here in Reno, there was a big fire south of town (Davis Fire) in October. The park ranger and family were in town shopping when it started, their house burned down, and they didn't make it back in time to get the pets out. đȘ

The person who asked me if the fires are 0% contained, David Acuña who is the spokesman for the California fires just stated the 4 main fires are at 0% contained as of 11:49 am PST.

11,000 acres burned in the Palisades fires. It's 17.1 square miles.

Maria Shriver posted a video of her neighborhood. Looks horrific.
[quote] Heartbreaking, devastating, beyond belief. Everything is gone. Our neighborhood, our restaurants. All our friends have lost everything. We have evacuated, but are safe. But people have lost everything. The firefighters have and are doing their best, but this fire is massive and out of control, and now there are multiple fires burning across Los Angeles. We in this city will put our arms around one another. We will rise, but right now these fire continues to burn. People need to stay safe, stay out of harms way, and allow firefighters do what they can to help those who need immediate assistance. The best place to get up to date information is from the @watchdutyapp or @calfire. Stay alert and stay safe! #lafires

âThere was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen."

I remember the Bel-Air -Brentwood fire back in 1961. Nearly 500 homes were destroyed. That was a camp fire compared to this event.
It truly is a nightmare - I live on the East Coast (central VA) and am devastated by all the fire burning nearly everything and destroying so much. I fear for those that aren't mobile (old, handicapped, etc.) and the animals/pets that may have perished due to this tragedy.
Watching this since last evening up until now really takes its toll even though I'm not affected by this horror.
Please send positive energy to those in California that they survive this nightmare and any further loss is minimal in regards to people/pets/family/friends.
God bless to all on the left coast.

"While trees and vegetation on the property have burned, Getty structures have been unaffected, and thankfully, both staff and the collections are safe," said Katherine E. Fleming, President and CEO of the Getty Trust.
"Fortunately, Getty had made extensive efforts to clear brush from the surrounding area as part of its fire mitigation efforts throughout the year," she said.
No artwork, galleries or archives were damaged from the fire and no staff members were hurt in the fire, she said.
"Irrigation was immediately deployed throughout the grounds" when the fire broke out Tuesday morning, Fleming said.

Just got word that my friend's home in Altadena has burned down. She and her husband just had their first kid. Devastating.
Anyone who has ever suffered through the complete loss of your home, what support from your friends did you find most helpful in helping to get through it?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 8, 2025 8:04 PM |
Cash, probably.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 8, 2025 8:05 PM |
Cash, gift cards, hugs, directly asking them what they need (making a few suggestions instead of a blank ask usually yields better results).
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 8, 2025 8:06 PM |
At a Wednesday morning news conference, L.A. County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said that an estimated 1,000 structures had been destroyed. He also said firefighters had been injured and reported a "high number of significant injuries" to residents who didn't evacuate. He implored people to leave when evacuation orders are issued.

The only silver lining here is that it happened before January 20th. I remember last time Trump had to be cajoled into giving federal money for California wildfires-they told him it was a red part of California that voted for him.

I give them 5% off my sneakers and NFT!
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 8, 2025 8:14 PM |
R16 - offer to help with tasks, be there to listen, sit there why they vent and breakdown, touch and hug them if theyâre the type. If they have kids or pets, offer to take them for a day so they can freak out in private and just be alone for a bit.
And keep asking regularly - even to the point of annoyance. A one time âLet me know if you need anythingâ wonât do. People are insecure and humble and donât want to be a bother. Plus theyâre devastated and scared. Few people will ask for anything that substantial, especially multiple times.
Being there for loved ones is work.

Katy Turd (the 'd' is silent) had a very touching segment speaking with a childhood friend she grew up with about the fire that destroyed her and his homes they grew up in. Hundreds of homes in the area were gone. There was even a clip of them as young kids - very sweet and Katy will be winging out to the coast tomorrow to meet with him and her other friend Jacob Soboroff.

At least they didnât lose EACH OTHER.

Whoa. Palisades Fire now listed at 11K+ acres, Eaton Fire now listed at 10K+ acres, and both are still listed as Zero % contained.
When the dust (or ash) settles there will be a sense of how bad this is relative to other past wildfires in that area, but this looks like a contender for the worst ever when you add the fires together.

In speaking with some people today it has become crystal clear to me the scope of this tragedy, and Iâm going to keep it a buck with you.
You are witnessing history right now. This is the most catastrophic disaster in US history. It will dwarf Katrina.
The insurance companies are not going to be able to afford payouts. The optimistic estimates right now are that 75 billion dollars worth of damage has been done. The US government is not going to subsidize private loss. This is going to change the city forever, especially in the Eaton fires. Families who have been here for generations will likely be leaving.
Unprecedented displacement lies ahead. Theyâll talk about this in the same breath as the Chicago fire.
I am so sorry to all of those who will be permanently impacted.

I knew LA was bad but I never thought it would get to this extent. Hopefully all of the Angelinos are safe. Hopefully your house is still instant somehow. Unfortunately certain parts of the city are fighting against nature to survive + climate change so itâs only going to get worse.
Which is why I always thought it was weird that celebs loved Malibu so much, itâs nice but the constant risk of wildfires has to ruin the great quiet vibe. Malibuâs constantly burning down and itâs only going to get worse. Personally if I was paying millions Iâd want to live in the less fire risk areas of LA county.

Tell you right now. If there is a remote chance you could be affected pack up two bags: One with immediate things like prescription meds, clothes, first aid and non perishable food. Flashlight battery operated radio. Then pack another bag into which you put mementos. keep sakes, photos, etc. Because that is your life history and the fire will destroy it. YOu should have bottled water, and peanut butter, snacks, canned tuna. crackers, bread. Make sure you take legal documents like documents for the bank and for the mortgage, and for insurance purposes. I know it sounds like a lot, but when they tell you to evacuate you'll be glad you have done it.

[quote]How much you want to bet those insurance companies aren't going to want to pay out on all of those multiple million dollar homes.
Insurance companies have already been cutting back on their business in California in recent years as wildfires in the state have worsened.
State Farm said in 2023 that it would no longer accept new homeowners' insurance applications in California. Last year, the company said it would end coverage for 72,000 homes and apartments in the state.
Homes in the upscale Pacific Palisades neighborhood, one of the areas hardest hit by the fires so far, were among those affected when State Farm canceled the policies last year.

If you think you are in an area that could potentially be evacuated, very often, those orders will come sooner than you think. It is much better to start packing the vehicles, saving the things that you want to save and have it be a false alarm than it is to wait until they tell you to leave and be scrambling with everybody else to pack a couple of precious items and then wait in traffic to get away from the affected area
You can see that these evacuations are spreading. If it's coming in your direction, however slowly, time to go. Just leave. Go to a friend's house, go to an evacuation shelter, go to a community centre, just find somewhere it doesn't matter. Leave.

Honestly, will they even be allowed to rebuild beachfront Malibu? But, how would that work for insurance (assuming a homeowner's policy is going to pay). "Here's a huge check for the value of the property?" It has to have happened before somewhere where a home was destroyed but for whatever reason could not be rebuilt where it was located.

Climate change. We had unusually rainy seasons in 2023 and early 2024. Lots of growth and then these dry, hurricane-force Santa Ana winds, that usually come in the fall and should have ended by now, came howling through the LA basin. The wind alone did damage in areas that weren't impacted by the fire.

by Anonymous | reply 182 | January 9, 2025 12:12 AM |
By 3 a.m. Wednesday, all water storage tanks in the Palisades area âwent dry,â diminishing the flow of water from hydrants in higher elevations, said Janisse Quiñones, chief executive and chief engineer of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the cityâs utility. âWe had a tremendous demand on our system in the Palisades. We pushed the system to the extreme,â Quiñones said Wednesday morning. âFour times the normal demand was seen for 15 hours straight, which lowered our water pressure.â Before the fire, all 114 tanks that supply the city water infrastructure were completely filled. Quiñones said that the hydrants in the Palisades rely on three large water tanks with about 1 million gallons each. The first ran dry at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday; the second at 8:30 p.m.; and the third was dry at 3 a.m. Wednesday.
âThose tanks help with the pressure on the fire hydrants in the hills in the Palisades, and because we were pushing so much water in our trunk line, and so much water was being used. ... we were not able to fill the tanks fast enough,â she said. âSo the consumption of water was faster than we can provide water in a trunk line.â In other words, the demand for water at lower elevations was hampering the ability to refill the tanks located at higher elevations. Because of the ongoing fire, DWP crews also faced difficulty accessing its pump stations, which are used to move water up to the tanks. The utility on Wednesday was sending 20 tankers with water to support firefighters in the Palisades, and the tankers were having to reload at other distant locations. âWe are constantly moving that water to the fire department to get them as much water as we can,â Quiñones said.

Where did you read that, on Truth Social?
These are wildfires in urban areas, something no water systems were built to prepare for. Same thing happened in Maui.
"The 2023 fire that ripped through the historic town of Lahaina and claimed more than 100 lives burned so quickly in a dense area, that pipe bursts made it hard to maintain enough water pressure for fire fighting efforts.
In the 2021 Marshall Fire in Colorado, the city of Louisville's water department had workers manually open valves to let untreated water from the Colorado River and Boulder Creek into pipes to restore pressure. That helped firefighters but also led to water contamination.
LADWP is sending in mobile water tankers to help fight the fires, which can be refilled at hydrants that havenât lost pressure, Quiñones said. It takes about 30 minutes to refill about 4,000 gallons of water.
Municipal water systems are not designed to fight wildfires, said Mark Pestrella, director of Los Angeles County Department of Public Works."

[R 233] - This IS a big deal. Iâm stuck in the Midwest and I spent the morning weeping, as another DataLounger earlier mentioned that they had spent the morning weeping.
Most of my family live in various parts of New York. I lived in NYC for over 15 years .
9/11 : When the 2nd plane hit, I couldnât get any family on the phone. I was at home with a new baby and an old husband at work, I couldnât figure if this was devastating just to New Yorkers or did the rest of the country care?
I had to call Little Gym to say we wouldnât be in. The teenager that answered the phone was weeping. Sobbing.
It was then that I had my dumb epiphany: The whole country is watching. And, a bit later, the world.
So, yep, [R-233]. The whole country is watching. And I hope not - but maybe soon the world.

Speaking of, R356, I was just reading some context about why this set of fires is so devastating. The LA area had one of its wettest seasons ever, the first few months of 2024. Then an absolute drought from April to now. So an unusual amount of new plant growth surged to life Feb-March-April âŠ. then it all gradually died and turned into wildfire fuel.

I live in Perth which has a similar climate to LA, and they perform prescribed burns in any area where dead plant matter can accrue. They sometimes burn in patterns so there are fire breaks between areas.
I have never heard of a fire out of control during a controlled burn, they are very well organised.
They try to choose days when the wind is blowing away from populated areas, but sometimes smoke hits the city and for people with asthma it can be bad for a couple of days. There have been devastating fires over East where they don't burn as frequently so I am glad they still do it here.

[quote]Side note⊠what a bad day politically for LA Mayor Karen Bass.
No, Elmo and Murdoch's Sky News are bullying the fuck out of her when the fires started while she was on a planned official trip. She took military planes to get back ASAP. Here's her side of it:
Mayor Bass has just defended her absence when the wildfires broke out in the city on Tuesday - she was on a trip to Africa.
"I was on the phone almost every hour of the flight," Bass says.
"Although I was not physically here, I was in contact with many of the individuals standing here throughout the entire time," she said.
Bass left town on Saturday as part of a presidential delegation to Accra to celebrate the inauguration of Ghana President John Mahama.
She returned on Wednesday to find her city in flames.
The mayor has also been facing criticism amid reports she cut more than $17m from the fire departmentâs budget last summer.

The thing most people don't think about is that no matter where a disaster happens, whether it is Asheville N.C. or Florida, or Wildfires in California, tornadoes in Oklahoma, etc. everyone's insurance rates go up. All of us pay. it doesn't only happen to those affected. it's like if I get in a car accident my rates will go up. But if I live in a state with a really high accident rate, everyone pays a higher rate. and with storm damage, insurance companies have now capped the amount they're willing to give for a damaged roof for example. Insurance companies are the biggest cam around. We need much better regulation. There's also a lot of bullshit insurance companies that promote low premiums and convenient online apps, etc. and they never pay out claims.

What about the Ronald Reagan Library, it seems like a sane, unique library with an airplane -- they invited Liz Chaney to speak there.
BTW, I read "years ago!" that Malibu was a perfect example of a place that should not be rebuilt and rebuilt and rebuilt. A waste of valuable resources. Because it would periodically be destroyed by fire.

One or the other. And sometimes Flee, but then Perish....because they get hit by a car, OR they go back into the burn areas to avoid human interaction -- I'm thinking of mountain lions, specifically. There was a lion in the National Park Service study that died shortly after the Woolsey Fire because it went back into the burn-scar upon encountering a housing development & its paws became badly burned.

Repugs love bashing Democrats especially California Democrats. Blaming Newsom, Bass, Harris, Biden, anyone with a D that lives in CA.
They are trying to tar and feather her with this fire. Claiming it's all her fault because she signed a billion dollar budget which had some minor admin cuts of about 17 million to the fire department. Meanwhile, they always bitch about how Democrats tax and spend. Talking out of both sides of their mouths as usual.
To be honest, they could use a haircut. An acquaintance I know has a son who is 29 years old working as a fireman in LA he's making over $200,000 with over time. I mean, that's a bit excessive when most of the time they are sitting around doing nothing.

The fires in LA right now feel absolutely apocalyptic. The sky is an eerie, burnt orange, ash is falling like snow, and the air is so thick itâs like trying to breathe through a pillow. I canât stop crying. I grew up here. This city is everything to me and watching it burn feels like a nightmare I canât wake up from.
Everywhere I look, thereâs devastation. The news is nonstop, the footage is unbearable, and the scent of smoke is seeping into my clothes, my hair, my soul. Is this really happening? Is this how it all ends? People are evacuating, homes are being lost, and it feels like the very heart of LA is being ripped out.

r494 They don't send people en masse to one specific location in such cases. They scatter them out at smaller sites which are more or less nearby but considered safe. For instance, Hollywood High School has been mentioned as an evacuation center.

For the residents who managed to salvage their homes - do you think any of them would want to move back in and live there again ? The stench will be around for years (I think). Then to look around what was your neighborhood and see pure devastation ? I think many people who still have their property just may tear it all down and start elsewhere.
I can't imagine being in their shoes. As one guy said on CNN this morning - it's like having this nightmare you can't wake up from.
by Anonymous | reply 498 | January 9, 2025 12:49 PM |
One thing they have mentioned a few times is the power cords running above ground in the neighborhoods - these have spread the fires faster (along with the winds). My city on the east coast has been asking for 'buried power lines' in our residential neighborhoods for decades (just like we have in the commercial districts downtown) but the electric company has been fighting this for years - they claim it will put 'many repair men' out of work. Ridiculous! (We have a lot of power outages with heavy winds in rainstorms and snowstorms with downed power lines).
by Anonymous | reply 499 | January 9, 2025 12:53 PM |
[quote]The stench will be around for years (I think).
I thought the same, but it actually goes faster than one would think, especially after the debris is cleared out and some new vegetation has some time to grow. I had a friend lose a place in the fires in NorCal a few years ago, and I was surprised that it didn't have that smell lingering.
by Anonymous | reply 500 | January 9, 2025 1:01 PM |
Gary powerlines are prohibitively expensive. In our neighborhood we looked at doing that maybe 20 years ago and I believe the cost was something like $50,000 per telephone pole. We live in a rural area so burying the poles for the entire town would probably be in the high eight figures, And it would generate minimal additional tax revenue to offset it.
by Anonymous | reply 501 | January 9, 2025 1:01 PM |
R499, so typical. if thatâs the utility companyâs opposition - keeping the lines up on poles as a job-protecting charity function - then they have no credible opposition.

We are all up right now. We walked outside & I cannot begin to describe the sordid type of smoke and the smell that is filling the air, settling on to the city.
It smells like smoke, ash, melted plastic, burnt wood, burnt paint, and charred animal flesh, or that smell that permeates the air when one is driving past or into areas east of DTLA, and can smell the carcasses of swine being rendered in that Vernon slaughter house. You all who have lived in Los Angeles for many years know the one Iâm referring to. We can also smell it in the second floor of the home. The third floor is all mine & thankfully, it hasnât permeated itself in there yet.
Iâve had a non stop headache for the last 24 hours due to all of smoke wafting into our area.
Weâre between the Eaton and the Sylmar/San Fernando Valley fires. Weâre all OK but were on standby yesterday due to all of the Emergency Alerts for possible Evacuation Orders.
Watching the news and oh my god. What an absolutely devastating loss to so many. I hope everyone on here affected by this are safe. Iâm so, so sorry this happened. I cannot even begin to understand how something like this feels, other than to be stuck on survival mode, which is another whole bag of trauma that has to be resolved once the dust literally settles.

A friend and her husband live(d) in Pacific Palisades and we kept getting fist hand updates even as things were happening (chaos on Sunset Bvd, among other things.) They are safe now and in a friend's house but she said there's pretty much nothing left in Pacific Palisades. They haven't checked on their rental house but are almost 100% certain it's gone.

r504, I would love it if it was HO LAND.
Anyway, stuck my head outside (in West Hollywood) and it no longer smells like a bonfire.. ABC is not doing local coverage, it's showing Jimmy Carter's funeral. All the living ex, present, and future president are there, and it's interesting to watch the dynamic. Obama is the only one chatting up Trump, but it might be because he's forced to sit next to him.

Iâm amazed how many people believe every celebrity is wealthy!
These folks have zero idea and cannot grasp that most, in fact, are not running around on yachts and private jets.
Unless an actor is booked 24/7, itâs oftentimes money in, money out. It takes years to get to a point where one has, letâs say⊠5 to 8, 10 million in net worth. Assets are almost always homes and/or apartment buildings as rental units. Getting 1-3 of these takes MANY years so that theyâre profitable, but property ownership/management is an expensive endeavor. Plenty of them own properties mainly outside of California that theyâre rent out to regular people. You may or not may know who your landlord actually is with Property Management companies running the show. MANY more celebrities live in VERY normal, average neighborhoods and homes than people understand. Woodland Hills, Sherman Oaks, Van Nuys, Glendale, etc.
Plenty leave Los Angeles after acquiring a rental property & move to New Mexico, Arizona, Texas and of course Georgia, to save money and build equity.
Then thereâs the kids, school expenses, clothing, vehicles, food, gas, medical insurance for the entire family, medical emergencies with parents or the parent with dementia in 24/7 assisted living.
AND within all of this, there are salaries to be paid to those who help them run the shop, so to speak, in house or contracted or retainers.
After MANY, MANY years of this, with the assumption that all has gone smoothly so far, a celebrity who is now on their late 40s to mid 60s MIGHT be able to say, âOK. The kids are off to college, and if I work on a set or gig every 2-4 years, me and the wife/husband will be solid.â
FUCK any and all of you who come on here to tell us about how you donât give a fuck about celebs losing everything because youâve never left your fucking house in all of your lives, or have never traveled or experienced the responsibilities of managing a career and a household. Being a celebrity is a FUCKING BUSINESS. ITâS A JOB. Youâre running a fever or barfing? 2 more hours on the set. Youâre on tour and broke your ankle? Hereâs a chair and a guitar, now get back to work because tonight youâre playing that show no matter what.
R290? What can be said of you or to you? You havenât really lived, so itâs understandable that you just donât get, âit.â

Melissa Rivers, whose home was destroyed by the fires, says she grabbed the necessities and âmy mom's Emmy, a photo of my dad and a drawing my mother had done of me and my son...I went for a drawing of my mother's rather than a photo, because I know I can find the photos.â

R511, thanks for describing, it's hard for the rest of us to imagine. The description of the smell really brought it home. Close friends lived near the WTC here in 2001 and they couldn't get over the unique and horrible cluster of smells and ash/dust coming from the site.
Separately, politically, Trump's been barking like a brain-diseased chihuahua over on Truth Social, using the fire to try to hurt the libs: bashing the Dems, bashing Newsom, bashing the LA mayor, all during a time of horrible crisis and tragedy... and the mainstream press is giving it next to zero attention. He seems small and ugly and on the margins, in all of this. Good.

I am trying to understand this Santa Ana phenomenon. Seeing those winds carrying flames smash into the Malibu coastline is not something I have seen before. Is it usually this dry into early winter? And even though the local temperatures are still mild are the Santa Ana winds actually hot, or are the ambient air temperatures still low?
by Anonymous | reply 524 | January 9, 2025 3:41 PM |
Usually, there's rain to keep the Santa Ana winds from doing what it's doing right now. The LA metro hasn't had rain since May.
by Anonymous | reply 525 | January 9, 2025 3:43 PM |
It makes me sad to think about all the art and books that got lost in these fires.
by Anonymous | reply 526 | January 9, 2025 3:46 PM |
Santa Ana driven fires have burned Malibu and the surrounding area (such as the Palisades) since before any large scale development in the area. Of course climate change exacerbates it in a number of ways.
Here's a good historical article.
by Anonymous | reply 527 | January 9, 2025 3:49 PM |
The Santa Anas blow from the Santa Anas to the ocean, and it goes with very low humidity, usually 10% or less. Sometimes they're hot, but this year, not so much- it got into the very low '70's during the days this week.
by Anonymous | reply 528 | January 9, 2025 3:50 PM |
R524, apparently no, this is very unusual to have a total drought through Oct Nov Dec into January. This is normally a wetter season for LA with at least some rainfall.
I believe the wind temps coming down from the mountains are only in the 60s or so, but at those extreme wind speeds and all the bone-dry vegetation everywhere, even a cool wind can spread a fire very rapidly.
by Anonymous | reply 529 | January 9, 2025 3:52 PM |
Do the Santa Ana winds usually stop as quickly as they start? Even though there is no rain forecast, I hope some of that cool moist air from the north can make its way down.

R523, the smell has officially permeated the third floor! đ
Iâm more concerned about our pets and our very beloved senior who owns the home we live in. He built this home. Started in the early 1980s. Iâve known him since I was a teen. He was/is 20 plus years my senior. I used to hang out with his ex girlfriend in our wild, Los Angeles heyday. Many years later, after not being in contact for years, we ran into each other at an A.A. Meeting here in L.A. Thankfully, we had both gotten sober, and in a VERY unexpected twist of fate, here we are, sharing a home, along with our also very loved roommate who is the unofficial head of household & keeps us all calm.
Itâs just so gross right now. Very hard to breathe in nothing but smoke, even with a face mask.
I havenât slept. I am so fucking anxious for everyone right now. Iâve never been in a fire, but I know what huge loss and displacement feels like & feeling safe again was very difficult for me, so of course, Iâm projecting & just want everyone to know that eventually, you feel safe again & everything will be alright.
by Anonymous | reply 531 | January 9, 2025 3:55 PM |
There's not much they can do until the winds die down. Looking at this video, you can see why the fires are spreading everywhere and why it's nearly impossible to stop them.

r520 echoes what I heard from a guy I met who had retired to a condo in Wisconsin after working for decades as a union crew member in for the big Hollywood studios.
"After seeing it up close, trust me, you wouldn't want to be famous star. Staff, homes, security, it all costs big money."
Oh, and he also said that Angelina Jolie was very nice to members of the crew, down-to-earth and friendly.

It's not just the drought and the winds:
âClimate change is leading to more erratic and extreme precipitation patterns,â he said. âThat effect on precipitation is very important, because weâre having wetter wet periods and drier dry periods, and overall, we're seeing this very erratic timing of precipitation.
That means a region like Southern California could be hammered by severe flooding at one point, as it was in March, and then months later descend into drought. Lurching between those extremes puts people and their communities at heightened risk, Moritz said.
âThatâs the climate signal in all of this â that weâve opened this window where we can get these big, devastating extreme events now,â he said.

R499 -- the issue about putting linemen out of work with underground lines is, well, you have to assume they're actually doing their jobs, if the positions exist to begin with. A private company with no competition will still seek to maximize profit which means a slim workforce.
Up north, I don't know if PG&E has ever had to answer for their poor line maintenance that contributed to the Napa fires several years back. Their excuse was they could not access lines on private property for maintenance due to overgrown vegetation. Residents never got a notice or order about clearing brush. So they let their infrastructure sit and rot?
PG&E can be so slipshot that they've had gas explosions that have leveled a neighborhood (after multiple complaints from residents about a gas leak) and part of a city. Maintaining the lines? Well fuck that, too. So grateful my city has its own municipal power company.

R548 Here in neighboring Nevada, NV Energy is almost as bad as PG & E. Power outages 3-4 times a year here (sometimes due to high winds, but most of the time not) and random rate increases.

his really had Home for me. I wrote some of this yesterday in the first thread, but my sister-in-law lost everything yesterday. I would say brother I would say my brother and sister-in-law but he died just two years ago, 10 days after being diagnosed with brain cancer. So she has been through a lot already. She, and my four nieces one of them was still living at the house on Monument Street which is one of the streets that borders the now leveled Pali Village. A five minute walk from their place from where they live.
I live in NYC now but they built that they did it but they did a teardown and built that house for the ground up in 1992 when I still lived in West Hollywood. I have been there numerous times holidays birthday is everything in between and I know that area very well from that connection.
Pacific Palisades was not an incorporated city I don't know the term but I believe it's a community. There was one fire department and no police department. If something happened with police were needed they relate on the Santa Monica Police Department.
and yes, my brother did very well for himself. He was an excellent provider for his family who were not wanting for anything. Like him, I estimate that 98% of the residence of Pacific Palisades really have their shit together. They were living their best lives. And he did it ALL on his own. It wasn't about nepotism, family status, wealth or relatives with connections.
Add in my opinion, it doesn't matter your income bracket, your place at life's table, whatever. Anyone who goes through that level of devastating and sudden loss gets a huge, HUGE pass.

So lucky to have SMUD in Sacramento. I've only had power go out four times in 16 years. A blown transformer, car hitting a utility pole, and a flaming, smoking pole (literally -- electrocuted rat) in my back yard that was replaced. I had power back within an hour in the first two, and within four for the pole incident. The fourth was during the awful atmospheric river two years ago this month. Power back within 24 hours. If a non-profit can do this for a city of 530K...
