Pacific Palisades burning Part 2

Continue discussion here.

by Anonymousreply 560January 9, 2025 5:47 PM

I worry about people not getting their pets out. Here in Reno, there was a big fire south of town (Davis Fire) in October. The park ranger and family were in town shopping when it started, their house burned down, and they didn't make it back in time to get the pets out. đŸ˜Ș

by Anonymousreply 1January 8, 2025 7:48 PM

The person who asked me if the fires are 0% contained, David Acuña who is the spokesman for the California fires just stated the 4 main fires are at 0% contained as of 11:49 am PST.

by Anonymousreply 2January 8, 2025 7:50 PM

11,000 acres burned in the Palisades fires. It's 17.1 square miles.

by Anonymousreply 3January 8, 2025 7:52 PM

Maria Shriver posted a video of her neighborhood. Looks horrific.

[quote] Heartbreaking, devastating, beyond belief. Everything is gone. Our neighborhood, our restaurants. All our friends have lost everything. We have evacuated, but are safe. But people have lost everything. The firefighters have and are doing their best, but this fire is massive and out of control, and now there are multiple fires burning across Los Angeles. We in this city will put our arms around one another. We will rise, but right now these fire continues to burn. People need to stay safe, stay out of harms way, and allow firefighters do what they can to help those who need immediate assistance. The best place to get up to date information is from the @watchdutyapp or @calfire. Stay alert and stay safe! #lafires

While Caltech seems safe lots of faculty live in Altadena where most houses burned down.

“There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen."

by Anonymousreply 13January 8, 2025 8:03 PM

I remember the Bel-Air -Brentwood fire back in 1961. Nearly 500 homes were destroyed. That was a camp fire compared to this event.

It truly is a nightmare - I live on the East Coast (central VA) and am devastated by all the fire burning nearly everything and destroying so much. I fear for those that aren't mobile (old, handicapped, etc.) and the animals/pets that may have perished due to this tragedy.

Watching this since last evening up until now really takes its toll even though I'm not affected by this horror.

Please send positive energy to those in California that they survive this nightmare and any further loss is minimal in regards to people/pets/family/friends.

God bless to all on the left coast.

"While trees and vegetation on the property have burned, Getty structures have been unaffected, and thankfully, both staff and the collections are safe," said Katherine E. Fleming, President and CEO of the Getty Trust.

"Fortunately, Getty had made extensive efforts to clear brush from the surrounding area as part of its fire mitigation efforts throughout the year," she said.

No artwork, galleries or archives were damaged from the fire and no staff members were hurt in the fire, she said.

"Irrigation was immediately deployed throughout the grounds" when the fire broke out Tuesday morning, Fleming said.

by Anonymousreply 15January 8, 2025 8:04 PM

Just got word that my friend's home in Altadena has burned down. She and her husband just had their first kid. Devastating.

Anyone who has ever suffered through the complete loss of your home, what support from your friends did you find most helpful in helping to get through it?

by Anonymousreply 16January 8, 2025 8:04 PM

Cash, probably.

by Anonymousreply 17January 8, 2025 8:05 PM

Cash, gift cards, hugs, directly asking them what they need (making a few suggestions instead of a blank ask usually yields better results).

by Anonymousreply 18January 8, 2025 8:06 PM

At a Wednesday morning news conference, L.A. County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said that an estimated 1,000 structures had been destroyed. He also said firefighters had been injured and reported a "high number of significant injuries" to residents who didn't evacuate. He implored people to leave when evacuation orders are issued.

by Anonymousreply 19January 8, 2025 8:07 PM

Okay, cash it is. Makes sense. Thanks.

by Anonymousreply 20January 8, 2025 8:07 PM

R16 Keep in contact with them. It helped me feel less unmoored and at sea and lost after my own personal disaster.

by Anonymousreply 21January 8, 2025 8:09 PM

The only silver lining here is that it happened before January 20th. I remember last time Trump had to be cajoled into giving federal money for California wildfires-they told him it was a red part of California that voted for him.

by Anonymousreply 22January 8, 2025 8:11 PM

I give them 5% off my sneakers and NFT!

by Anonymousreply 23January 8, 2025 8:14 PM

R16 - offer to help with tasks, be there to listen, sit there why they vent and breakdown, touch and hug them if they’re the type. If they have kids or pets, offer to take them for a day so they can freak out in private and just be alone for a bit.

And keep asking regularly - even to the point of annoyance. A one time “Let me know if you need anything” won’t do. People are insecure and humble and don’t want to be a bother. Plus they’re devastated and scared. Few people will ask for anything that substantial, especially multiple times.

Being there for loved ones is work.

by Anonymousreply 24January 8, 2025 8:18 PM

Friends in LA say there’s an hour wait when you call 911. God forbid you have a (non-fire related) emergency. Mary.

by Anonymousreply 25January 8, 2025 8:20 PM

Could someone please explain why this happens every fucing year in CA?

by Anonymousreply 26January 8, 2025 8:24 PM

warn, dry weather + no freezing = plenty of fuel for fires

by Anonymousreply 27January 8, 2025 8:26 PM

+ less than half an inch of rainfall in 6 months

by Anonymousreply 28January 8, 2025 8:27 PM

Gas station in Altadena, bad news, they weren’t able to secure the gas storage and sheriffs are setting up 1/2 mile perimeter, hazmat requested according to fire scanner. Scary stuff.

Turn Palisades into a nature reserve. It’s too dangerous and risky for rich folks to live.

by Anonymousreply 35January 8, 2025 8:37 PM

Katy Turd (the 'd' is silent) had a very touching segment speaking with a childhood friend she grew up with about the fire that destroyed her and his homes they grew up in. Hundreds of homes in the area were gone. There was even a clip of them as young kids - very sweet and Katy will be winging out to the coast tomorrow to meet with him and her other friend Jacob Soboroff.

by Anonymousreply 36January 8, 2025 8:38 PM

Isn't Katy Tur the one whose daddy is now a mommy?

"Outside the Pasadena Convention Center, a man told his wife that their home had been destroyed and they had lost everything. The woman fell to her knees, sobbing, as her husband embraced her. They briefly sat on the ground, crying. Strangers asked if the woman needed help. “We lost everything,” the man shouted."

At least they didn’t lose EACH OTHER.

by Anonymousreply 38January 8, 2025 8:43 PM

Her Dad transitioned. What of it, r37? Hmmmmm?

by Anonymousreply 39January 8, 2025 8:43 PM

Whoa. Palisades Fire now listed at 11K+ acres, Eaton Fire now listed at 10K+ acres, and both are still listed as Zero % contained.

When the dust (or ash) settles there will be a sense of how bad this is relative to other past wildfires in that area, but this looks like a contender for the worst ever when you add the fires together.

by Anonymousreply 47January 8, 2025 8:53 PM

In speaking with some people today it has become crystal clear to me the scope of this tragedy, and I’m going to keep it a buck with you.

You are witnessing history right now. This is the most catastrophic disaster in US history. It will dwarf Katrina.

The insurance companies are not going to be able to afford payouts. The optimistic estimates right now are that 75 billion dollars worth of damage has been done. The US government is not going to subsidize private loss. This is going to change the city forever, especially in the Eaton fires. Families who have been here for generations will likely be leaving.

Unprecedented displacement lies ahead. They’ll talk about this in the same breath as the Chicago fire.

I am so sorry to all of those who will be permanently impacted.

by Anonymousreply 50January 8, 2025 8:58 PM

The only reason death toll is low currently is because there are no resources available to look for victims right now while fires are still actively burning and new ones are igniting.

by Anonymousreply 55January 8, 2025 9:04 PM

I fear you're right, R48.

by Anonymousreply 56January 8, 2025 9:06 PM

I knew LA was bad but I never thought it would get to this extent. Hopefully all of the Angelinos are safe. Hopefully your house is still instant somehow. Unfortunately certain parts of the city are fighting against nature to survive + climate change so it’s only going to get worse.

Which is why I always thought it was weird that celebs loved Malibu so much, it’s nice but the constant risk of wildfires has to ruin the great quiet vibe. Malibu’s constantly burning down and it’s only going to get worse. Personally if I was paying millions I’d want to live in the less fire risk areas of LA county.

Tell you right now. If there is a remote chance you could be affected pack up two bags: One with immediate things like prescription meds, clothes, first aid and non perishable food. Flashlight battery operated radio. Then pack another bag into which you put mementos. keep sakes, photos, etc. Because that is your life history and the fire will destroy it. YOu should have bottled water, and peanut butter, snacks, canned tuna. crackers, bread. Make sure you take legal documents like documents for the bank and for the mortgage, and for insurance purposes. I know it sounds like a lot, but when they tell you to evacuate you'll be glad you have done it.

by Anonymousreply 75January 8, 2025 9:38 PM

How much you want to bet those insurance companies aren't going to want to pay out on all of those multiple million dollar homes.

I don't think you can buy a place in PP for less than $4 million - and that's for a regular home.

by Anonymousreply 76January 8, 2025 9:38 PM

It will be interesting to see if Federal government and public interest will be to help many really, really rich people. Class warfare ahead!

by Anonymousreply 77January 8, 2025 9:39 PM

People need to have cash and a full tank of gas, too. ATMs may not work.

by Anonymousreply 78January 8, 2025 9:39 PM

And if you drive a car that doesn’t take gas, better find a place to charge up

by Anonymousreply 79January 8, 2025 9:40 PM

R75 good advice. I live in a borderline flash flood zone and I keep a list of the "top 15 to 20" mementos to pack up and where they are, in case something bad ever happens. It can be difficult to think clearly under extreme stress so it's good to do that thinking well in advance.

by Anonymousreply 80January 8, 2025 9:41 PM

[quote]It will be interesting to see if Federal government and public interest will be to help many really, really rich people. Class warfare ahead!

Considering America votes like they're temporarily embarrassed millionaires, this is going to get interesting.

by Anonymousreply 81January 8, 2025 9:41 PM

I'm worried that the insurance industry could collapse after this. California and Florida are basically uninsurable states at this point. How is this going to affect the markets in other areas of the country?

by Anonymousreply 86January 8, 2025 9:47 PM

[quote]How much you want to bet those insurance companies aren't going to want to pay out on all of those multiple million dollar homes.

Insurance companies have already been cutting back on their business in California in recent years as wildfires in the state have worsened.

State Farm said in 2023 that it would no longer accept new homeowners' insurance applications in California. Last year, the company said it would end coverage for 72,000 homes and apartments in the state.

Homes in the upscale Pacific Palisades neighborhood, one of the areas hardest hit by the fires so far, were among those affected when State Farm canceled the policies last year.

R92 that’s due to embers starting individual structure fires where the actual wall of flames hasn’t reached a neighborhood or development.

by Anonymousreply 99January 8, 2025 9:59 PM

I’m trying to understand the scope of this. I mean we’ve obviously seen plenty of CA wildfires before. But this much close to this many people? And the winds and lack of early containment.

by Anonymousreply 100January 8, 2025 10:01 PM

seems pointless to spray things with water so they don't burn. i guess embers could be doused, but actual flames don't care about a damp roof.

by Anonymousreply 111January 8, 2025 10:34 PM

If you think you are in an area that could potentially be evacuated, very often, those orders will come sooner than you think. It is much better to start packing the vehicles, saving the things that you want to save and have it be a false alarm than it is to wait until they tell you to leave and be scrambling with everybody else to pack a couple of precious items and then wait in traffic to get away from the affected area

You can see that these evacuations are spreading. If it's coming in your direction, however slowly, time to go. Just leave. Go to a friend's house, go to an evacuation shelter, go to a community centre, just find somewhere it doesn't matter. Leave.

[quote] Could someone please explain why this happens every fucing year in CA?

Climate change. We had unusually rainy seasons in 2023 and early 2024. Lots of growth and then these dry, hurricane-force Santa Ana winds, that usually come in the fall and should have ended by now, came howling through the LA basin. The wind alone did damage in areas that weren't impacted by the fire.

by Anonymousreply 182January 9, 2025 12:12 AM

By 3 a.m. Wednesday, all water storage tanks in the Palisades area “went dry,” diminishing the flow of water from hydrants in higher elevations, said Janisse Quiñones, chief executive and chief engineer of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the city’s utility. “We had a tremendous demand on our system in the Palisades. We pushed the system to the extreme,” Quiñones said Wednesday morning. “Four times the normal demand was seen for 15 hours straight, which lowered our water pressure.” Before the fire, all 114 tanks that supply the city water infrastructure were completely filled. Quiñones said that the hydrants in the Palisades rely on three large water tanks with about 1 million gallons each. The first ran dry at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday; the second at 8:30 p.m.; and the third was dry at 3 a.m. Wednesday.

“Those tanks help with the pressure on the fire hydrants in the hills in the Palisades, and because we were pushing so much water in our trunk line, and so much water was being used. ... we were not able to fill the tanks fast enough,” she said. “So the consumption of water was faster than we can provide water in a trunk line.” In other words, the demand for water at lower elevations was hampering the ability to refill the tanks located at higher elevations. Because of the ongoing fire, DWP crews also faced difficulty accessing its pump stations, which are used to move water up to the tanks. The utility on Wednesday was sending 20 tankers with water to support firefighters in the Palisades, and the tankers were having to reload at other distant locations. “We are constantly moving that water to the fire department to get them as much water as we can,” Quiñones said.

[quote] I read that the fire hydrants are out of water because the county refused to fill the reservoirs...is this true?

Where did you read that, on Truth Social?

These are wildfires in urban areas, something no water systems were built to prepare for. Same thing happened in Maui.

"The 2023 fire that ripped through the historic town of Lahaina and claimed more than 100 lives burned so quickly in a dense area, that pipe bursts made it hard to maintain enough water pressure for fire fighting efforts.

In the 2021 Marshall Fire in Colorado, the city of Louisville's water department had workers manually open valves to let untreated water from the Colorado River and Boulder Creek into pipes to restore pressure. That helped firefighters but also led to water contamination.

LADWP is sending in mobile water tankers to help fight the fires, which can be refilled at hydrants that haven’t lost pressure, Quiñones said. It takes about 30 minutes to refill about 4,000 gallons of water.

Municipal water systems are not designed to fight wildfires, said Mark Pestrella, director of Los Angeles County Department of Public Works."

Hollywood Hills fire is now called the "Sunset Fire." Said to be driven uphill by 20 mph winds and they suspect 5 to 10 minutes before it reaches structures.

R253 Who cares. This is so insignificant compared to everything else, but of course the media has to breathlessly report on “looters.”

We've got a Fox News cunt in the henhouse.

by Anonymousreply 261January 9, 2025 1:57 AM

"We're ready to start filling the reservoirs. As you know, Madame Mayor, they're not filled by rain, but by us — "

"I said NO! Let those reservoirs run DRY!"

by Anonymousreply 292January 9, 2025 2:25 AM

[R 233] - This IS a big deal. I’m stuck in the Midwest and I spent the morning weeping, as another DataLounger earlier mentioned that they had spent the morning weeping.

Most of my family live in various parts of New York. I lived in NYC for over 15 years .

9/11 : When the 2nd plane hit, I couldn’t get any family on the phone. I was at home with a new baby and an old husband at work, I couldn’t figure if this was devastating just to New Yorkers or did the rest of the country care?

I had to call Little Gym to say we wouldn’t be in. The teenager that answered the phone was weeping. Sobbing.

It was then that I had my dumb epiphany: The whole country is watching. And, a bit later, the world.

So, yep, [R-233]. The whole country is watching. And I hope not - but maybe soon the world.

Just post, if you don’t mind, that you’re safe.

All these commercial buildings, retail stores, restaurants, that have burnt to the ground, aren't they required by law to have sprinkler systems? Are sprinklers just useless in this sort of fire?

by Anonymousreply 298January 9, 2025 2:28 AM

R290. You do realize that "celebrities" make up a tiny percentage of ALL of these areas currently being decimated?! The local media is only reporting on the famous to try and get national attention. For those of us non famous who were born and live in these areas, I respectfully ask you to shut your fucking mouth. No one, famous or not, needs or wants your sympathy, especially since you make yourself out to be heartless anyway.

by Anonymousreply 303January 9, 2025 2:31 AM

sprinklers tend to only put out fires that start inside a building, R298, not fires that burst through the wall from the outside.

I'm experiencing the same thing now watching my TV.

This is unbelievable.

Some correspondent named Haley on Fox 11 LA who was covering the Acton fire almost lost it on air, saying there were "so many looters" around her and stammering through a story about a truck with eight men who stopped and asked her for a mask: "I started screaming for a policeman," she said with a shaky voice.

The studio cut her off and went back to the desk.

If by chance they catch and arrest and convict any of the looters, there should be a sentencing enhancement. Basically robbery, burglary, or theft during a declared emergency will be punished more severely than during other times. Make it part of the criminal code.

by Anonymousreply 335January 9, 2025 2:55 AM

Thought I saw something about the winds finally calming down tomorrow evening into Friday and through the weekend. Sending hopes and prayers that the fire loses its power soon after that, and the crews can contain it.

R331, reportedly (and astoundingly) they got some evacuation assistance and all 3 including the pooch are alive.

by Anonymousreply 336January 9, 2025 2:55 AM

by Anonymousreply 337January 9, 2025 2:56 AM

R313 Same. I had to ask my co-worker “is the building collapsing?” because my eyes weren’t connecting with my brain. Same feeling here. Just hard to even absorb the images.

There are many riding schools and stables in the burn areas. I hope they were able to evacuate as many of the horses as possible.

by Anonymousreply 338January 9, 2025 2:56 AM

When I lived in Woodland Hills about 40 years ago, in the area where Mulholland becomes dirt road, there were a couple of controlled burns. I remember being being scared shitless once because I saw huge flames, not aware that it was a controlled burn.

by Anonymousreply 360January 9, 2025 3:17 AM

Speaking of, R356, I was just reading some context about why this set of fires is so devastating. The LA area had one of its wettest seasons ever, the first few months of 2024. Then an absolute drought from April to now. So an unusual amount of new plant growth surged to life Feb-March-April
. then it all gradually died and turned into wildfire fuel.

by Anonymousreply 361January 9, 2025 3:17 AM

I live in Perth which has a similar climate to LA, and they perform prescribed burns in any area where dead plant matter can accrue. They sometimes burn in patterns so there are fire breaks between areas.

I have never heard of a fire out of control during a controlled burn, they are very well organised.

They try to choose days when the wind is blowing away from populated areas, but sometimes smoke hits the city and for people with asthma it can be bad for a couple of days. There have been devastating fires over East where they don't burn as frequently so I am glad they still do it here.

She has one of the coolest houses I've ever seen, and I hope that it doesn't burn down.

[quote]Side note
what a bad day politically for LA Mayor Karen Bass.

No, Elmo and Murdoch's Sky News are bullying the fuck out of her when the fires started while she was on a planned official trip. She took military planes to get back ASAP. Here's her side of it:

Mayor Bass has just defended her absence when the wildfires broke out in the city on Tuesday - she was on a trip to Africa.

"I was on the phone almost every hour of the flight," Bass says.

"Although I was not physically here, I was in contact with many of the individuals standing here throughout the entire time," she said.

Bass left town on Saturday as part of a presidential delegation to Accra to celebrate the inauguration of Ghana President John Mahama.

She returned on Wednesday to find her city in flames.

The mayor has also been facing criticism amid reports she cut more than $17m from the fire department’s budget last summer.

The thing most people don't think about is that no matter where a disaster happens, whether it is Asheville N.C. or Florida, or Wildfires in California, tornadoes in Oklahoma, etc. everyone's insurance rates go up. All of us pay. it doesn't only happen to those affected. it's like if I get in a car accident my rates will go up. But if I live in a state with a really high accident rate, everyone pays a higher rate. and with storm damage, insurance companies have now capped the amount they're willing to give for a damaged roof for example. Insurance companies are the biggest cam around. We need much better regulation. There's also a lot of bullshit insurance companies that promote low premiums and convenient online apps, etc. and they never pay out claims.

What about the Ronald Reagan Library, it seems like a sane, unique library with an airplane -- they invited Liz Chaney to speak there.

BTW, I read "years ago!" that Malibu was a perfect example of a place that should not be rebuilt and rebuilt and rebuilt. A waste of valuable resources. Because it would periodically be destroyed by fire.

One or the other. And sometimes Flee, but then Perish....because they get hit by a car, OR they go back into the burn areas to avoid human interaction -- I'm thinking of mountain lions, specifically. There was a lion in the National Park Service study that died shortly after the Woolsey Fire because it went back into the burn-scar upon encountering a housing development & its paws became badly burned.

They are trying to tar and feather her with this fire. I looked up Eugene Levy’s home in Pacific Palisades— it’s very modest for someone who has been in the biz for so long. Hollywood is now Burningwood.

by Anonymousreply 471January 9, 2025 7:30 AM

The fires in LA right now feel absolutely apocalyptic. The sky is an eerie, burnt orange, ash is falling like snow, and the air is so thick it’s like trying to breathe through a pillow. I can’t stop crying. I grew up here. This city is everything to me and watching it burn feels like a nightmare I can’t wake up from.

Everywhere I look, there’s devastation. The news is nonstop, the footage is unbearable, and the scent of smoke is seeping into my clothes, my hair, my soul. Is this really happening? Is this how it all ends? People are evacuating, homes are being lost, and it feels like the very heart of LA is being ripped out.

Am I being dramatic? Maybe. But this feels like the most catastrophic event to hit LA in modern history. I’m shattered. Tell me I’m not alone in this.

by Anonymousreply 472January 9, 2025 7:37 AM

I’ve officially hit my limit. My nerves are completely fried. I just popped an extra large Ativan because I simply cannot do this anymore. Either I’ll wake up in the morning with my house still standing, or I won’t wake up at all. At this point, I’m fine with either outcome.

Goodnight, LA. If I don’t see you tomorrow, it’s been real. If I do, someone please remind me to never live through an end-of-days scenario again. It SUCKS!!!

by Anonymousreply 473January 9, 2025 7:40 AM

Mayor Bass, Fire Chief Crowley, and all the LA first responders and city officials still managed to save lives and save Hollywood last night despite the MASSIVE distraction caused by the Orange Menace, Elmo, Murdoch's Fox News and their many, many flying monkeys on the media on down to shittty chaos agents all over the Internet.

Makes you wonder who really cares about America — let alone their fellow Americans— and who cares about themselves doesn't it? Nothing that those assholes brought up couldn't wait until things were under control.

by Anonymousreply 479January 9, 2025 9:54 AM

R233 I am an LA native. It's so heartbreaking and gut wrenching it's hard to even put into words.

I worked in the Palisades for years. My nephews went to Pali High. My in laws live in the Highlands. The fact it's all but gone now is just bizarre and really hard to fathom. I have a really stupid question. Where do the people being evacuated go? I've been watching news coverage but haven't seen any info on that.

BBC is saying 130,000 people have been ordered to evacuate but I can't imagine all of them have found nice hotels.

by Anonymousreply 494January 9, 2025 12:12 PM

r494 They don't send people en masse to one specific location in such cases. They scatter them out at smaller sites which are more or less nearby but considered safe. For instance, Hollywood High School has been mentioned as an evacuation center.

by Anonymousreply 495January 9, 2025 12:28 PM

I think the Hollywood sign should be the least of anyone's worries.

by Anonymousreply 496January 9, 2025 12:39 PM

It is, but there's some optics involved, which I think is stupid too. Sadly, that's how the world works.

by Anonymousreply 497January 9, 2025 12:43 PM

For the residents who managed to salvage their homes - do you think any of them would want to move back in and live there again ? The stench will be around for years (I think). Then to look around what was your neighborhood and see pure devastation ? I think many people who still have their property just may tear it all down and start elsewhere.

I can't imagine being in their shoes. As one guy said on CNN this morning - it's like having this nightmare you can't wake up from.

by Anonymousreply 498January 9, 2025 12:49 PM

One thing they have mentioned a few times is the power cords running above ground in the neighborhoods - these have spread the fires faster (along with the winds). My city on the east coast has been asking for 'buried power lines' in our residential neighborhoods for decades (just like we have in the commercial districts downtown) but the electric company has been fighting this for years - they claim it will put 'many repair men' out of work. Ridiculous! (We have a lot of power outages with heavy winds in rainstorms and snowstorms with downed power lines).

by Anonymousreply 499January 9, 2025 12:53 PM

[quote]The stench will be around for years (I think).

I thought the same, but it actually goes faster than one would think, especially after the debris is cleared out and some new vegetation has some time to grow. I had a friend lose a place in the fires in NorCal a few years ago, and I was surprised that it didn't have that smell lingering.

by Anonymousreply 500January 9, 2025 1:01 PM

Gary powerlines are prohibitively expensive. In our neighborhood we looked at doing that maybe 20 years ago and I believe the cost was something like $50,000 per telephone pole. We live in a rural area so burying the poles for the entire town would probably be in the high eight figures, And it would generate minimal additional tax revenue to offset it.

by Anonymousreply 501January 9, 2025 1:01 PM

R499, so typical. if that’s the utility company’s opposition - keeping the lines up on poles as a job-protecting charity function - then they have no credible opposition.

by Anonymousreply 502January 9, 2025 1:02 PM

Can’t the pole climbers just become hole diggers instead? Surely stuff still goes wrong that needs to be fixed

by Anonymousreply 503January 9, 2025 1:19 PM

The Hollywood sign used to say HOLLYWOODLAND. Maybe they can just save HO if the sign is threatened by fire. Forget the other letters and go with the succinct upgrade.

by Anonymousreply 510January 9, 2025 2:37 PM

We are all up right now. We walked outside & I cannot begin to describe the sordid type of smoke and the smell that is filling the air, settling on to the city.

It smells like smoke, ash, melted plastic, burnt wood, burnt paint, and charred animal flesh, or that smell that permeates the air when one is driving past or into areas east of DTLA, and can smell the carcasses of swine being rendered in that Vernon slaughter house. You all who have lived in Los Angeles for many years know the one I’m referring to. We can also smell it in the second floor of the home. The third floor is all mine & thankfully, it hasn’t permeated itself in there yet.

I’ve had a non stop headache for the last 24 hours due to all of smoke wafting into our area.

We’re between the Eaton and the Sylmar/San Fernando Valley fires. We’re all OK but were on standby yesterday due to all of the Emergency Alerts for possible Evacuation Orders.

Watching the news and oh my god. What an absolutely devastating loss to so many. I hope everyone on here affected by this are safe. I’m so, so sorry this happened. I cannot even begin to understand how something like this feels, other than to be stuck on survival mode, which is another whole bag of trauma that has to be resolved once the dust literally settles.

They are safe now and in a friend's house but she said there's pretty much nothing left in Pacific Palisades. They haven't checked on their rental house but are almost 100% certain it's gone.

r504, I would love it if it was HO LAND.

Anyway, stuck my head outside (in West Hollywood) and it no longer smells like a bonfire.. ABC is not doing local coverage, it's showing Jimmy Carter's funeral. All the living ex, present, and future president are there, and it's interesting to watch the dynamic. Obama is the only one chatting up Trump, but it might be because he's forced to sit next to him.

by Anonymousreply 516January 9, 2025 3:07 PM

Really good to see nearly no wind in all the live news reporting I'm watching.

by Anonymousreply 517January 9, 2025 3:08 PM

You should wear a mask if you have one, lots of chemicals and plastics and crap being burned....

The Palisades fire keeps getting closer to the Eames House (203 Chautauqua Blvd). I’m so hoping that magnificent place is spared.

I’m amazed how many people believe every celebrity is wealthy!

These folks have zero idea and cannot grasp that most, in fact, are not running around on yachts and private jets.

Unless an actor is booked 24/7, it’s oftentimes money in, money out. It takes years to get to a point where one has, let’s say
5 to 8, 10 million in net worth. Assets are almost always homes and/or apartment buildings as rental units. Getting 1-3 of these takes MANY years so that they’re profitable, but property ownership/management is an expensive endeavor. Plenty of them own properties mainly outside of California that they’re rent out to regular people. You may or not may know who your landlord actually is with Property Management companies running the show. MANY more celebrities live in VERY normal, average neighborhoods and homes than people understand. Woodland Hills, Sherman Oaks, Van Nuys, Glendale, etc.

Plenty leave Los Angeles after acquiring a rental property & move to New Mexico, Arizona, Texas and of course Georgia, to save money and build equity.

Then there’s the kids, school expenses, clothing, vehicles, food, gas, medical insurance for the entire family, medical emergencies with parents or the parent with dementia in 24/7 assisted living.

AND within all of this, there are salaries to be paid to those who help them run the shop, so to speak, in house or contracted or retainers.

After MANY, MANY years of this, with the assumption that all has gone smoothly so far, a celebrity who is now on their late 40s to mid 60s MIGHT be able to say, “OK. The kids are off to college, and if I work on a set or gig every 2-4 years, me and the wife/husband will be solid.”

FUCK any and all of you who come on here to tell us about how you don’t give a fuck about celebs losing everything because you’ve never left your fucking house in all of your lives, or have never traveled or experienced the responsibilities of managing a career and a household. Being a celebrity is a FUCKING BUSINESS. IT’S A JOB. You’re running a fever or barfing? 2 more hours on the set. You’re on tour and broke your ankle? Here’s a chair and a guitar, now get back to work because tonight you’re playing that show no matter what.

R290? What can be said of you or to you? You haven’t really lived, so it’s understandable that you just don’t get, “it.”

by Anonymousreply 520January 9, 2025 3:26 PM

Thank you for this, r520. I'm grounded enough in reality to wonder how celebs do it, and you've demystified it a bit.

Melissa Rivers, whose home was destroyed by the fires, says she grabbed the necessities and “my mom's Emmy, a photo of my dad and a drawing my mother had done of me and my son...I went for a drawing of my mother's rather than a photo, because I know I can find the photos.”

R511, thanks for describing, it's hard for the rest of us to imagine. The description of the smell really brought it home. Close friends lived near the WTC here in 2001 and they couldn't get over the unique and horrible cluster of smells and ash/dust coming from the site.

Separately, politically, Trump's been barking like a brain-diseased chihuahua over on Truth Social, using the fire to try to hurt the libs: bashing the Dems, bashing Newsom, bashing the LA mayor, all during a time of horrible crisis and tragedy... and the mainstream press is giving it next to zero attention. He seems small and ugly and on the margins, in all of this. Good.

I am trying to understand this Santa Ana phenomenon. Seeing those winds carrying flames smash into the Malibu coastline is not something I have seen before. Is it usually this dry into early winter? And even though the local temperatures are still mild are the Santa Ana winds actually hot, or are the ambient air temperatures still low?

by Anonymousreply 524January 9, 2025 3:41 PM

Usually, there's rain to keep the Santa Ana winds from doing what it's doing right now. The LA metro hasn't had rain since May.

by Anonymousreply 525January 9, 2025 3:43 PM

It makes me sad to think about all the art and books that got lost in these fires.

by Anonymousreply 526January 9, 2025 3:46 PM

Santa Ana driven fires have burned Malibu and the surrounding area (such as the Palisades) since before any large scale development in the area. Of course climate change exacerbates it in a number of ways.

Here's a good historical article.

The Santa Anas blow from the Santa Anas to the ocean, and it goes with very low humidity, usually 10% or less. Sometimes they're hot, but this year, not so much- it got into the very low '70's during the days this week.

by Anonymousreply 528January 9, 2025 3:50 PM

R524, apparently no, this is very unusual to have a total drought through Oct Nov Dec into January. This is normally a wetter season for LA with at least some rainfall.

I believe the wind temps coming down from the mountains are only in the 60s or so, but at those extreme wind speeds and all the bone-dry vegetation everywhere, even a cool wind can spread a fire very rapidly.

by Anonymousreply 529January 9, 2025 3:52 PM

Do the Santa Ana winds usually stop as quickly as they start? Even though there is no rain forecast, I hope some of that cool moist air from the north can make its way down.

by Anonymousreply 530January 9, 2025 3:53 PM

R523, the smell has officially permeated the third floor! 😟

I’m more concerned about our pets and our very beloved senior who owns the home we live in. He built this home. Started in the early 1980s. I’ve known him since I was a teen. He was/is 20 plus years my senior. I used to hang out with his ex girlfriend in our wild, Los Angeles heyday. Many years later, after not being in contact for years, we ran into each other at an A.A. Meeting here in L.A. Thankfully, we had both gotten sober, and in a VERY unexpected twist of fate, here we are, sharing a home, along with our also very loved roommate who is the unofficial head of household & keeps us all calm.

It’s just so gross right now. Very hard to breathe in nothing but smoke, even with a face mask.

I haven’t slept. I am so fucking anxious for everyone right now. I’ve never been in a fire, but I know what huge loss and displacement feels like & feeling safe again was very difficult for me, so of course, I’m projecting & just want everyone to know that eventually, you feel safe again & everything will be alright.

by Anonymousreply 531January 9, 2025 3:55 PM

There's not much they can do until the winds die down. Looking at this video, you can see why the fires are spreading everywhere and why it's nearly impossible to stop them.

NO, R496.

They'd replace it with a Vegas-Times Square light-show sign spelling out each letter, flashing rapidly, and ending every 30 seconds with color changes.

County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath wants her Emmy.

by Anonymousreply 536January 9, 2025 4:20 PM

I've written this before, but I'll do it again.

r520 echoes what I heard from a guy I met who had retired to a condo in Wisconsin after working for decades as a union crew member in for the big Hollywood studios.

"After seeing it up close, trust me, you wouldn't want to be famous star. Staff, homes, security, it all costs big money."

Oh, and he also said that Angelina Jolie was very nice to members of the crew, down-to-earth and friendly.

by Anonymousreply 537January 9, 2025 4:21 PM

It's not just the drought and the winds:

“Climate change is leading to more erratic and extreme precipitation patterns,” he said. “That effect on precipitation is very important, because we’re having wetter wet periods and drier dry periods, and overall, we're seeing this very erratic timing of precipitation.

That means a region like Southern California could be hammered by severe flooding at one point, as it was in March, and then months later descend into drought. Lurching between those extremes puts people and their communities at heightened risk, Moritz said.

“That’s the climate signal in all of this — that we’ve opened this window where we can get these big, devastating extreme events now,” he said.

by Anonymousreply 538January 9, 2025 4:27 PM

What R520 describes sounds like a giant hamster wheel of money and stress. I'd rather live more simply and just work. But I'm sure some of it has to do with their egos and narcissism.

R539, what I described is how most of us in America live.

We work to pay bills & support ourselves and our families.

Some do it in the office while others do it on a set or a stage.

by Anonymousreply 543January 9, 2025 4:41 PM

Celebrities-they're just like you!

by Anonymousreply 544January 9, 2025 4:43 PM

R191 Funny how the part that's shows that the funding for the police went up almost as much as what the fire department loss is not shown should tell the rest of you that this is just a right wing diarrhea.

by Anonymousreply 545January 9, 2025 4:45 PM

Note to the PCH beachfront homeowners.

We don't think you will be rebuilding.

by Anonymousreply 546January 9, 2025 4:55 PM

Oof. That's going to be a "fun" one.

by Anonymousreply 547January 9, 2025 4:56 PM

And then come the mud slides and washed out roads... When should these be expected?

R499 -- the issue about putting linemen out of work with underground lines is, well, you have to assume they're actually doing their jobs, if the positions exist to begin with. A private company with no competition will still seek to maximize profit which means a slim workforce.

Up north, I don't know if PG&E has ever had to answer for their poor line maintenance that contributed to the Napa fires several years back. Their excuse was they could not access lines on private property for maintenance due to overgrown vegetation. Residents never got a notice or order about clearing brush. So they let their infrastructure sit and rot?

PG&E can be so slipshot that they've had gas explosions that have leveled a neighborhood (after multiple complaints from residents about a gas leak) and part of a city. Maintaining the lines? Well fuck that, too. So grateful my city has its own municipal power company.

by Anonymousreply 548January 9, 2025 5:03 PM

R548 Here in neighboring Nevada, NV Energy is almost as bad as PG & E. Power outages 3-4 times a year here (sometimes due to high winds, but most of the time not) and random rate increases.

by Anonymousreply 551January 9, 2025 5:19 PM

his really had Home for me. I wrote some of this yesterday in the first thread, but my sister-in-law lost everything yesterday. I would say brother I would say my brother and sister-in-law but he died just two years ago, 10 days after being diagnosed with brain cancer. So she has been through a lot already. She, and my four nieces one of them was still living at the house on Monument Street which is one of the streets that borders the now leveled Pali Village. A five minute walk from their place from where they live.

I live in NYC now but they built that they did it but they did a teardown and built that house for the ground up in 1992 when I still lived in West Hollywood. I have been there numerous times holidays birthday is everything in between and I know that area very well from that connection.

Pacific Palisades was not an incorporated city I don't know the term but I believe it's a community. There was one fire department and no police department. If something happened with police were needed they relate on the Santa Monica Police Department.

and yes, my brother did very well for himself. He was an excellent provider for his family who were not wanting for anything. Like him, I estimate that 98% of the residence of Pacific Palisades really have their shit together. They were living their best lives. And he did it ALL on his own. It wasn't about nepotism, family status, wealth or relatives with connections.

Add in my opinion, it doesn't matter your income bracket, your place at life's table, whatever. Anyone who goes through that level of devastating and sudden loss gets a huge, HUGE pass.

In my opinion it doesn't matter your income bracket, your place at life's table Life's Table

Have the QAnon conspiracies started yet about FEMA militias stealing peoples land?

by Anonymousreply 553January 9, 2025 5:23 PM

NOTE re the above: I did not fine tune it or proofread it because I tried doing that twice and each time I lost all the text for some reason. Then I'd have to start over or cut and paste what I had saved and it just got too overwhelming.

by Anonymousreply 554January 9, 2025 5:23 PM

Pacific Palisades is a section/neighborhood of LA that functions to a large degree as it's own enclave, as many such areas do.

by Anonymousreply 555January 9, 2025 5:24 PM

r554, when I want to add a couple of paragraphs, I type it in a Word document, edit it, then paste it into the DL window.

by Anonymousreply 556January 9, 2025 5:27 PM

Wow, that's pretty terrible, r549. That used to happen in Chicago with Com Ed. (On the coldest winter mornings getting ready for work it seemed)

So lucky to have SMUD in Sacramento. I've only had power go out four times in 16 years. A blown transformer, car hitting a utility pole, and a flaming, smoking pole (literally -- electrocuted rat) in my back yard that was replaced. I had power back within an hour in the first two, and within four for the pole incident. The fourth was during the awful atmospheric river two years ago this month. Power back within 24 hours. If a non-profit can do this for a city of 530K...

by Anonymousreply 557January 9, 2025 5:29 PM

r552, sorry about your brother

by Anonymousreply 558January 9, 2025 5:31 PM

I'm watching the KABC footage over Pacific Palisades right now. It's all gone. It's ALL gone. Jesus Christ in Heaven.

Sending you love and hugs, dear R511. DL hugs, but hugs nevertheless.

Ironically, last year Southern California received a record total rainfall. Where were the dams and reservoirs to store all of that water?
