Elvis Presley would have been 90 today, but only lived to be 42

I wrote this piece awhile back about his passing and while most of his movies were junk, my favorite Elvis Presley movie is 1957's "Loving You." Elvis was 22 and this was a take-off on his rise to fame, when he was still rockabilly, with Lizabeth Scott, Wendell Corey, and Dolores Hart. Presley looks and dresses great, filled with energy. And the title song is one of my faves! My look here:

He looks hot in that photo.

I don’t get the continued fascination with him in 2024. I was born in the early 60s and even when I was a teenager we considered him to be a living fossil.

Gosh. It's weird to think he could rather easily still be alive.

by Anonymousreply 3January 8, 2025 7:37 PM

If only Elvis, hadn’t died, he’d still be alive!!!

r2, You can't deny his commercial impact. My dad, a ghetto youth in Brooklyn, loved his films growing up lol. You were at the age were someone like Elvis was deemed uncool before massive popstars could cleverly curate their image. He was still very much beloved by the general public.

My Dad was caught in an Elvis fan stampede in the 1950s.. He yanked the King to safety, thank you very much.

Here's the title song...

I remember his 40th birthday being a big deal. Fifty years ago.

But r5, as I initially said, why?

His music was of a time and place, but really got replaced with the rock music of the mid to late 60s.

He’s like a VHS VCR. Huge in its day, but then the world moved on. But not with some — they’re like people who still faithfully watch stuff on their vhs vcr.

He coulda been somebody

He could have evolved in the later decades if he had lived and hadn’t overeaten. He could have sang Believe instead of Cher.

His comeback in '68 was a big deal. And some of his best songs were from his last decade.

His mistake was that he didn't die soon enough.

He had deteriorated into a fat slob in a jumpsuit with a drug problem.

James Dean did it better and at least Marilyn was still pretty when she was found naked.

Better to go still pretty in a Porsche than obese on a toilet.

TCM is running 24 hours of Elvis today, including Jailhouse Rock at 8 pm/ET & Viva Las Vegas at 9:45 pm/ET. Here's my look at Elvis Presley & Ann-Margret at their youthful peak, & you'll also get a peek of Terri Garr as one of the backup dancers!

He had charisma. I saw him in one of his later concerts, I had no real desire to go, but there was a ticket that was going to waste otherwise. I was fascinated by the crowd, young and old, men and women...just mesmerized by him. He just has "it" tremendous charisma.

And today is the 112th anniversary of Nixon’s birth. I once never thought it possible I could hate another president more.

by Anonymousreply 17January 9, 2025 6:15 AM

He couldn’t have been very bright.

by Anonymousreply 18January 9, 2025 7:52 AM

He was a snack in GI Blues

I remember as a kid when he died & I'm kind of shocked that he was only 42. That guy had a lot of miles on him. Even though be became a shadow of himself in later days, he really created different music reaching all kinds of audiences. It's hard to imagine an artist doing that today/.

That 1968 comeback concert is one of the best, if not the best things Elvis did IMO. I just love the look of it. Everything about it works for me.

He had a huge likeability factor. I love the polite persona. He was an original. My dad, in his 70's is still a huge fan. I think you can dislike him, thats your personal taste, but you cannot say anything bad; he was very special.

I really think Baz Luhrman captured this in his Elvis movie in a way that young people can understand, r22. Or at least I hope he did,

by Anonymousreply 23January 9, 2025 12:08 PM

R17 Reagan???

by Anonymousreply 24January 9, 2025 12:14 PM

Fun fact: Elvis was actually a natural blond, and started dying his hair in the mid-50s.

God, he looked old and wasted when he died..
