Awards success of Emilia Pérez prompts outrage in Mexico and among trans activists
Mexicans responded to the idea that it represented their country with ridicule. One account quipped that Gascón must be “the first winner of a Golden Globe to have blocked half of Mexico.”
Activists have also questioned the film’s trans representation, noting its use of trans identity as an “inherently redemptive” tool for its criminal protagonist.
Glaad, an LGBTQ+ advocacy organisation, described the film as a “profoundly retrograde portrayal of a trans woman” and a “step backward for trans representation”.

I think "sparks outrage" is the proper terminology.

Rather ridiculous criticism. It was a great film and I think if you look at the story of someone who felt stuck in the wrong body, making the courageous decision to live their truth and proceed with gender reassignment surgery that would have been in this Narcos lifestyle, that had a family, there would have been issues and doubts all along the way. That's honest.
So what if the actresses aren't Mexican? It's not the first time that's happened in a Latin film. It just seems like an excuse to hate on Karla Sofia and the film without even watching it. I didn't think it portrayed an untrue version of Mexico, and my husband is Mexican and was born there.
It was fantastic. All of them were.

It was terrible. All of them were terrible except Zoe Saladana.

A bunch of overwrought TWADDLE. Every other minute someone bursts into a crappy song. Ya basta!

Why can't a film just be a film anymore. Im so sick of art having to hold politics on its shoulders. It's fucking trans woman who happens to be a drug dealer. Lawd, people are so touchy. I might go see this just for Zoe Saldana.

r11 is it one of those musicals where it seems awkward when people burst out in song and dance because those are the worst?

Whoever posted on social media that Gascon won a Golden Globe should be reminded that she didn't.

I miss escapism too, r13. Those movies are still out there of course, the summer is usually full of them.

ALL "trans" characters MUST BE heroic, valiant, and virtuous victims! The gifting of their "trans" identity MUST be the main dramatic conceit of the entire story, or else you are ALL MAGA EXTREME TRANSPHOBIC TERFS!

Did GLAAD write this apres-ski from a five-star resort in Gstaad?
Luigi Mangione, where are you when we need you?

That’s how Marxism works. Everything much support the state, support a narrative. It’s Stalin 101. Art has no value if it isn’t supporting a specific cause or goal.

Just looked at the Wiki page for the film. It’s opening has the criticism. Just before I checked the source I thought, “Let me guess, The Guardian.” Sure enough it was. lol

In Trump’s America, all art must support MAGA or it will be boycotted

Marxism is an economic theory. How you translate that into being artistically repressive makes no sense
