Revisiting the La La Land, Moonlight fiasco

I forgot how long it took them to correct the mistake and inform the producers of La La. They let them give long impassioned speeches. How soul crushing. Woah.

I feel like if you want to drive Dorothy Faye to permanent insanity through torture, play a recording that consists of her announcing “La la land” and the “No Wire Hangers!” Scream on repeat for an hour .

That’s interesting OP I was thinking about this the other day

I think La La Land was originally a much darker story that was neutered to make it more marketable. The song “Someone in the Crowd” is transparently about aspiring actresses prostituting themselves to gain a foothold in the business. On the surface it’s a frothy song but if you listen to the lyrics it’s about hopelessness and powerlessness.

If you saw Woody Allen’s Cafe Society (no one did), it has a triangle between the plucky hero (Eisenberg), the object of his desire (Kristen Stewart), and a ruthless talent agent (Steve Carrell). La La Land needed something like this. It needed an antagonist. “Someone in the Crowd” appears to set up an antagonist - someone who would make all Mia’s dreams come true, for a price - but the movie never follows through on it. That’s why it felt so inconsequential, and lost enough votes to lose Best Picture.

I care.

Spoiler Alert: But, best ending scene I can recall in a long time at link... Cinematic artistry!

Years ago the Hollywood Reporter printed an oral history about it.

Before this incident, I had always wondered what would happen if the wrong name was announced. Watching it happen live was pretty shocking.

I remember Shirley Maclaine looked like she'd just seem someone get shot.

I didn’t know things between Faye and Warren had soured that bad. I could’ve sworn I read an article a few years back where Faye talks about meeting up with Warren occasionally for lunch.
