Peter Yarrow died today, and even as a child i found "Puff the Magic Dragon" really depressing despite how twee it is.
What are other songs that just depress you? "Eleanor Rigby," of course.
Ring Around The Rosie. It's about the Bubonic Plague.
The origin of the song is unknown, and there is no evidence supporting the popular 20th-century interpretation linking it to the Great Plague or earlier outbreaks of bubonic plague in England.

Everything in the 70s that wasn’t disco sounded like “rainy day crying by the window” songs to me as a kid. McArthur Park definitely made my lip quiver. I don’t know why because I was too young to really understand it. Its sound is just mournful. Plus I was a little fattie and the idea of a perfectly good cake ruined by rain depressed the hell out of me. I quite literally remember thinking as a kid - surly there must be one piece left.

Another 70s song for your ass. I can’t believe almost 50 responses and no Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chaplin? Who isn’t depressed by generational neglect?

[italic]Goodbye to you my trusted friend
We've known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we've climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and ABC's
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.
Goodbye my friend it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky...[/italic]
