Whatever will become of us?!?

Do we forsee people in our social circles peeling off and going to the dark side in the next months? "Progressives for Trumpism". I won't lie: our chances are slim.

We are just so afraid that we will be left hollow, alone and exposed, when the dust settles and the chickens come home to roost.

I don’t really care. I live in a red state so I’m used to Republican friends that are gay friendly or gay themselves. I don’t care what they say behind my back and I doubt they care what I say behind their back if I say anything.

He’s an asshole, he has fascist tendencies, he attracts the absolute worst people, but he isn’t Hitler or Stalin. Can he do a lot of damage? Of course. Do I think he will be what sink us as a nation? No. The West in general is declining. The smarter ones out there already know this. It’s just something we have to get through so stop bitching and start helping.

And stop kvetching about every single stupid thing he says. I know (some of) you guys want to act like Rome is burning, but that’s just because a sizable population here are drama queens or costal idiots.

More of you really should have taken Nate Silver seriously before the election. You didn’t want to because what he had to say wasn’t what you wanted to hear, but he was right and we have to deal with that. Kamala plateaued at 45% in October and I voted for her in a red state knowing this!

Be best!

It's frightening and confusing. My family is full of them and they believe he won't actually do any of the horrible things in 2025. It still doesn't explain to me why anyone would vote for him given the overwhelming reasons not to, regardless of party affiliation - who would vote for someone who says all the bat shit crazy things he does - they're eating the dogs, I want to be a dictator, we should invade Greenland.....? WTF. It's Biden's fault we have to wash our clothes longer? anyway, no idea what is going to happen. I see the media and those around me already bowing to kiss the ring.....gay flags disappearing, companies embracing LGBT discrimination again.....even an "accepting" church near me took in their flag......I canceled cable and Sirius XM, all social media - gone - not watching the news - just living my life as best I can and do what I can to be happy and that's about all I can do.

by Anonymousreply 3January 8, 2025 12:58 AM

I understand that, being as how you're a lesbian, R1, you may not know this, but gay men's distaste for Nate Silver has zilch to do with politics and everything to do with him being perceived as a bossy bottom who ruins the party. It is on a subliminal wavelength.

by Anonymousreply 4January 8, 2025 12:59 AM

The uncomfortable reality is that our political landscape is now upended. We are holding on to old battles.

George W. Bush has little in common with today’s Republicans, but many liberal institutions were built because of him. They have evolved, but are likely to be replaced. We need new Obamas and Clintons and Maddows and Reids and Pelosis who are built for the present.

The good news is that we know we have to rebuild. Republicans are banking it all on a 78 year old.

by Anonymousreply 5January 8, 2025 1:08 AM

Why, exactly, would progressives form a group in favor of Trump? MAYBE if he'd stuck to all that isolationist/anti-war talk he would've got a chunk of progressives, but all the take over Greenland, Panama, Canada, etc. talk is the very opposite of what that group wants. He's being so openly imperialist it isn't funny. (It really isn't funny as it's scaring our allies even if he doesn't intend to follow through.)

His madness will move him to nuke a major blue US city.

OP/ “I won't lie: our chances are slim.“

But our waist lines aren’t. So let us go fat and happy into that good slaughter!

by Anonymousreply 8January 8, 2025 1:29 AM

I just don’t give a fuck anymore.

R1, just remember -- when you point a finger at someone else, there are three pointing back at you.

It all seems quite catastrophic. The disappointing thing is how the U.S. is just a laboratory for fascism now. The corporate media successfully forces Biden off the ticket and now we see Trudeau being forced to resign and ridiculous efforts in the UK to get Starmer to call a GE just 6 months after he won the election - the PM doesn’t have to call an election for 5 years. Everybody knows this. Let him do his job. There’s just no respect for norms anymore. The UK is probably the biggest casualty of Trump, since he entered politics in 2015. He’s done more damage to our country than he has the U.S. - just by lowering the standard of what’s acceptable. The corporate media will hound and hound Starmer until he can’t do his job anymore. And for what? The Tories were in power for 14 years and wrecked this country - they had 3 different PMs in the last election cycle alone, their government was completely out to sea and they want to replace Starmer after 6 months?

Enough with the billionaires already. They are killing democracy.

In 2016, Susan Sarandon was criticised for wanting to “burn it all down”. But that’s what’s happening. And it now seems not only inevitable but necessary. The only thing that is going to bring about change, a shift towards democratic and progressive principles, is acute pain. I will have to keep reminding myself to just look away.

Maybe you will care when there is increased hostility toward you, your partner, your gay friends and colleagues. It will happen. "Gay-friendly" will be out of fashion soon. When legislators vote to abrogate protections from discrimination, your "gay-friendly" friends will not speak up. When conservative social media recasts the image of LGBTQ people as depraved, licentious groomers who want special rights to make our perversion equal to Christian marriage, your "gay-friendly" friends will probably stop calling you or inviting you around. Come back to DL then and tell us how you feel.

I don’t know. I’m vulnerable. I can’t make plans really, just have to see what happens…

One day at a time and less news.

What in troll hell is the OP?

by Anonymousreply 16January 8, 2025 7:21 AM

So many good points on this thread. Helpful.

I’m curious if r13 prices right, even in blue states. After the election, I was talking with straight friend over whether I should marry my partner after 15 years. It wasn’t possible when we first dated, so moving together was essentially it. She was shocked when I pointed out that permanent record of being married to the same sex might not be great in the future. Actually, I was shocked that I said it. But it’s not inconceivable, given this country’s history.

LA has been literally firebombed. We are in the End Times for sure now.

by Anonymousreply 19January 8, 2025 2:12 PM

He's not Hitler or Stalin r13 He gave Operation Warp Speed and he and his elite DEMOCRAT/REPUBLICAN friends made people get a clot vaccine or else. He's a Shitler.

by Anonymousreply 20January 8, 2025 3:40 PM

[QUOTE] He's a Shitler.

Yass, because name calling has proven so effective in fighting him.
